When asked about a favorite or popular vineyard recommendation I was given a sticky note with an area where vineyards are located. I'm long overdue to write a glowing review of Yelping Dog. It's a reliable choice for good food that has something for all the tastes in our family, and the portions are the right size instead of making us feel bad about eating too much, needing to take it home, or wasting. The beer and wine selection is second to none and there's mocktails and NA beer that are actually really good. The decor and atmosphere are very nice. Actually my one complaint is that lighting is pretty dim; harder to read a menu with my aging eyes. But that's pretty minor. read more

Popped into this establishment and it felt right. There were two soft chair just inside, but there is a beautiful bar, several bar tables, and a whole wall of wines. Yes, beers on tap and bottle at the bar as well. The menu is great. The ambience is enhanced by the charcuterie boards, and the selection of cheeses is fabulous. My husband and I had a beer and glass of their wine, pinot gris. Wonderful, and so much that we brought our friends with us to nosh and drink before the Blackfriars play that evening. The service was wonderful, and they are a busy place, but nothing was left to want. The chef is accomplished and joy to talk with while waiting for our take home selection of cheese. We were passing through Staunton at lunch time and found TD on Yelp. It's situated in a charming downtown area with all local restaurants and shops. There's a municipal parking lot only a block away so parking was easy. The menu offers eclectic lunch fare, and for me, any restaurant with eight kinds of grilled cheese is a repeater. I had a glass of rosé and a grilled gruyere and it was as good as I'd hoped. The service was friendly and unhurried. Next time we're in Staunton we'll definitely be back. read more

definitely recommend coming here! i came for my 21st birthday as a nice short celebration, and i was able to try their colli moscato, which tasted amazing. like most moscatos, it was very sweet and had hints of apple. we ordered a charcuterie board, and they are definitely not stingy with the cheese! i absolutely loved it here. the servers were so kind once they knew it was my birthday they surprised me and my girlfriend with two macarons-- which was the perfect sweet treat! i appreciated how quiet it was in there, but we did go there for lunch time. overall, i had a lovely experience and hope to return here soon! read more

Yelping Dog is one of my "dream about" restaurants. Whenever I am craving cheese, their Lady Bird grilled cheese is what I think of! While they are primarily known for their epic wine and cheese board selections their grilled cheese sandwiches can't be missed. Staunton is exactly halfway between our home in DC and my family in NC and knowing that Yelping Dog is our road trip stop makes the drive more exciting than unbearable. Visited YDW Saturday, December 21st @ 12:30pm for the first time with my wife and in-laws. Sadly the service was absolutely horrible, which ruined the experience. The server was rude, intentionally slow, couldn't make any recommendations on a cheese selection plate (I mean none), etc. On a positive note, the grilled cheese was awesome! My in-laws said the hot dog was "OK". The craziest thing about the whole meal was the Tomato Soup....or better yet, the lack of being able to order the soup. They only have 1 soup on the menu - Tomato Soup. When we tried to order it at 12:30 pm on a cold Saturday, the rude server said it 'wasn't ready yet & don't know if it will be available. If it is, it'll be 30-45 minutes". Besides the fact we couldn't believe they didn't have the 1 soup they offer ready, when we asked her a second time if she could confirm its availability, she blew us off. Good Luck, if you decide to go. Hopefully the server will be fired by then and the soup will be available to go with their awesome grilled cheese. read more

The bottles for sale in the shop appear to be fairly priced (most between 20 and 30) and the atmosphere is both friendly and sophisticated. She hopped on the phone with her wine rep and spent about 15 minutes talking with them about what I was looking for. THEN she spent another 10 minutes sharing what she learned. We stopped in for a light lunch and a drink. The server was great when we stopped in with getting each of us a glass of water, then our drink along with our food order. Then she stayed at the bar talking to the other server, looking at the laptop and small talk with someone at the bar. The chef made some small talk with us, brought over the triple M sandwich (grilled mozzarella, meatball, maria sandwich) which was amazing and asked how it was once we finished. The server never checked on us and asked only if we were ready for the check. I highly recommend for the food and wine, as far as service, maybe if they are busy, they would concentrate on the paying customers. They also have a great store aside of them with some neat clothing and jackets. Only downside was the store clerk ignored us as he was too busy looking at his phone. It has been a while since we visited this, a favorite place, and we were happy to see it busy (not bustling) ...bit a fair amount of customers for a small town, early Friday night. We were lucky to get a few seats at the bar. The restaurant staff were bustling around. Waters were promptly placed before us. We perused the menu and waited for the bar staff to inquire as to our order. We waited. Waited. Waited. I started to get a little perplexed, then annoyed and then, frankly, incredulous. The staff was plentiful but no one came our way. Keep in mind: we're sitting AT the bar! I finally flagged someone down by hand gestures. It was impossible to actually make eye contact as no one would acknowledge our presence. Finally managed to get a second pour (another prolonged endeavor) and my husband and I remarked upon returning home that it was, hands down, the worst service we could recall.
