Great traditonal South China (Canton) style rice congee spot that also does rice rolls and noodles. Not really a Hong Kong style congee spot as ingredients and flavor is a bit different. This congee is more savory as seems they use quite a salted congee. Had the preserved egg and pork, as well as pork kidney congee. Enjoyed it thoroughly as it came nice and hot. Also had the rice roll with fried dough, which was nice, but didn't come with sesame sauce or sweet sauce (which you would find with HK Style rice rolls. Service was quick and efficient. We decided to give Yi Ji Chang Fen a go tonight. My group was feeling varying degrees of hunger, so this was a good place to share some small plates. I've heard of Yi Ji Chang Fen but only tried it today. I've eaten so much dim sum in my lifetime, so my standard for dim sum may be higher. We came around 5PM on a Saturday and there wasn't anyone really there. It could be because dim sum feels more like a morning or lunch thing, or it could just be because we were there for a very early dinner. Between our party, we shared: - Marinated Chicken and Mushroom Rice Roll - Stuffed Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf - Steamed Chicken Feet w/ Black Bean Sauce - Black Gold Egg Custard Buns - Chicken Feet with Herbs - Dry Style Beef Chow Fun And one Honey Lemon Tea for me. The honey lemon tea was a comfort for the cold day. Maybe a bit too much honey, but still good for the throat during the dry season. The chow fun came first and surprisingly it was not bad. There was a bit of 'wok hey' there and it stands out as one of the better dishes we had. As for the rice roll - I wanted to try something less conventional and I've never seen chicken in rice rolls, so I thought it would be interesting to try. It was quite disappointing though. Their rice roll was bigger than normal in width so with rice rolls being a struggle to pick up already, the bigger size made it an even bigger struggle. Everything just slipped out of the rice roll and it wasn't evenly wrapped. There were some bunched up layers on the edges. I think the chicken just didn't pair that well either and it was lacking in ingredients. Maybe the more conventional rice rolls would be better. For the two types of chicken feet, I normally like the one in herbal soup. If made well, the chicken feet has a nice flavor to it. For Yi Fen's herbal chicken feet, their portion was pretty good, but flavor was less prominent. I enjoyed the chicken feet in black bean sauce more because the flavor was better. Lastly, for the stuffed sticky rice and black gold egg custard buns, I suspect that these are not made in-house, but rather store-bought. The sticky rice lacked ingredients and the rice was a little harder than if made fresh. And the perfectly shaped black buns with a golden brush stroke on top (which I've seen all over the internet) seemed too elevated-looking compared to everything else. I'm not the biggest fan of molten lava buns, but they came out nicely. I didn't have any, but the molten lava custard was pretty runny. All in all, an okay experience. Service was a bit lacking. I don't recommend the dim sum dishes, but if I happen to want congee, I may give this place another go. Apart from the dim sum and rice rolls, the noodles I glimpsed from other customers looked not bad. I wonder if other locations are better. read more

This relatively new place mostly offers dim sum and porridge. I like that the menu is enlarged on their walls displayed outside so you know what they have to offer before you go in. We have only done take out and it's pretty fast - 10 minutes or so with chairs in front for you to sit and wait. You can look at the tv screens while you are waiting and we were watching how dim sum was made in China. We tried the chicken porridge, fish porridge and the chinese donut that is usually eaten with the jook. All were good and tasty and the jook was less than $10. We recently just ordered a tub of regular jook and it was good. This will likely be my go to place for jook as it's reasonable and I don't want to drive to Oakland or SF Chinatown. There were quite a few people dining in at the time. Parking is not an issue as this is located in the outdoor strip mall and there is plenty of parking behind the building. There are other eating places nearby as well as 85 degree bakery. You need to ask for utensils if needed. It is not always given. read more

Been to multiple Yin Ji's and I love the food here! My friend and I stopped by Saturday night for dinner. We were the first ones seated around 6:30, but a couple groups came after us. This space is large and spacious with plenty of parking in the plaza. It's probably my favorite location so far in the bay area (over Berkeley and Dublin) in terms of ambience. In terms of the menu, they specialize in rice noodle rolls (chang fen) and congee, but they also offer some noodle soups and dimsum items as well. I was starving, so I ordered two rice noodle rolls for myself: the pork and beef roll ($9) and the shrimp roll ($8.25). Both rolls came out quickly and were delicious! The skin was silky smooth and there was a good amount of filling in each roll. I literally inhaled both rolls; they were gone in minutes! My friend got the fried tofu appetizer ($6.25) to snack on as he wasn't that hungry. I tried a piece of it and while it was fried well, it was very bland. I am happy we have a "Chang Fen" and congee spot in East Bay as they are quite niche within Cantonese cuisine, let along Chinese food. Yin Ji offers a strong selection of both and they are tasty! Arrived here around noon on a Sunday - surprised that it wasn't crowded. We ordered a variety of dim sum and congee and rice rolls. The congee was perfectly hot and soupy - really hit the spot on a chilly rainy day. Fried dough was fluffy and crispy! Dim sum was less impressive. My kids loved the steam buns (so much so we didn't get to try them!) but we were underwhelmed by the BBQ pork bun. We did try to order a variety of rice rolls but I guess the orders were left off, so we didn't get to try them. Service was quick and polite. This location is situated on the south end of the Park N Shop, right behind the 85C Bakery. I took my buddy and fellow Elite David A. here for lunch on 02/05/2024. It wasn't too busy when we walked in at around 1:45pm. We were quickly greeted and seated by one of the servers. The interior was clean and bright. The walls were decked with many award plaques. There were a couple TVs showing different Chinese programs. The menu featured a wide array of appetizers, rice noodle rolls, congee, noodle dishes, etc. We ordered four items to share - Fried Eggrolls, Beef Congee, Wonton Noodle Soup, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll. Everything came all at once in about 10 minutes. Taste wise, they ranged from average to good. Below is the breakdown of what we got: Fried Eggrolls - Hot and good. They were fried to order. Filling was vegetarian. Beef Congee - The congee base was smooth and silky. Beef was tender and a generous amount was given. Wonton Noodle Soup - Pretty average IMHO. While the wontons were okay, the broth lacked that umami taste. My guess was that they didn't put any dried flounder powder in it. Also, I thought the noodles could have been chewier. I've tried the one in Plessanton/ Livermore before and that one is no good, so was hesitant to try this one... but this one is good. it's a brand new restaurant in the Concord Park n Shop strip mall and everything is brand new; nice clean and modern decor, with spacious seating. Between the 2 of us, we ordered: (1.) Vegetarian rice noodles - very good, and the noodles are good with a chew to it ... thumbs up! (2.) Pork Liver Jook - medium to good. Flavors and texture are on point though the liver was overcooked a bit, so very tough. The liver should be smooth in the jook for the perfect texture and flavor (3.) Beef chow fun - very good. I especially appreciate the noodles ... you can tell it's freshly made given that *chew*. Nice dish though the chow fun could use a bit more soy sauce for coloring and more wok hay. (4.) Continuing the complete tour of the former Fry's Electronics shopping center lands me at this Cantonese breakfast spot. Ok, the name on the sign may very well be Yin Ji Chang Fen. Chang Fen, as you very well know, is a type of dumpling. It's not my favorite type of dumpling. I felt as though I had to endure them, rather than enjoy them when an ex-gf of mine would insist on ordering them at dim sum. You can find a clip on YouTube of Gordon Ramsay failing to prepare them in the kitchen of a London Cantonese restaurant. I debated with myself whether or not to order them. To gain a comprehensive idea of a restaurant, it behooves one to try out the very dish in the restaurant's title. So why the debate? Well, I was only in town for a short time and I had plenty yet to eat. I figured, I've had plenty of dim sum, and thus decided to forgo the chang fen. What was ordered in its stead? What is the quintessential breakfast dish of Guangzhou, China? The bowl of porridge called congee. It is short grained rice that is soaked and cooked until it breaks completely down. They have different selections of congee. You can get one with pork and boiled tea egg. Another with beef and raw egg. Yet another with fish. And still another with almost everything. Depending on the dish you select; it will be garnished with either scallions and cilantro; or scallions and cilantro and ginger. No modifications. I ordered the pork and tea egg congee at the recommendation from one of my fellow diners. I requested ginger to be added, despite it not being listed on the menu. My waitress denied my request. She then proceeded to deny all of the reasoning and cajoling I made for having ginger added. Which, in the end, the policy makes sense. The ginger would likely have shrouded the flavor of the preserved egg. A white pepper shaker is available on the table. You will want to avail yourself of it. A few shakes will do. You can request a house made hot chili paste and it will be granted, no matter the congee ordered. It is not as plain as it may seem. It is surprisingly savory. You crave it. It is soothing. So much so that I returned the next day for a seafood congee. That time, ginger was allowed. read more

This place is known for their rice rolls. Compared to other rice rolls, the ones here are delicate, thinner, and have a much softer texture. The sweet soy sauce on top is delicious and addictive. The fillings are also authentic (liver, kidney, dried shrimp and scallops, etc), in addition to the usual char siu and fresh shrimps. We ordered 3 rolls- all three were perfect. I've been to their other location in Pleasanton but it's good to have a new location closer to my parents. We came on a Tuesday afternoon and there was no wait. It's located in a medium size shopping plaza so there is no shortage of parking spots. My parents each order a rice roll and I got the marinated beef rice roll. We ordered the Laiwan style assorted congee to be shared between the 3 of us. There was enough food even though we didn't go crazy with the ordering. My parents both liked their rice roll. The skin is thin and the meat was marinated well. My only complaint would be it's not hot enough as my rice roll was just lukewarm. They serve us complimentary tea. The Laiwan style porridge was just ok. The peanuts were a bit hard and the bbq pork didn't look very appealing; however, the texture of the porridge is perfect. Service was average. After ordering, it didn't take too long for food to come out but we had to flag the wait staff to get our check at the end. Clean and simple decor which makes it a good spot to have breakfast or brunch or a late lunch with family and friends. This is probably not a proper spot to take a date though. Yin Ji Chang Fen Concord is opened in a busy area filled with eating spots all over. Though, they are on the quieter side of the shopping center, as it's facing where Fry's used to be, and in the back of the building where 85c is. There's really nothing there anymore, so plenty of parking in the back for those who have a hard time finding any spots in the front. The kind of food they serve here isn't just chang fen, but also noodles, porridge, and other usual dishes at drop in shops in place like Chinatown where you just want to drop by for a quick bite. The menu isn't extensive, but it does cover a little bit of everything here. The service here is just, okay. They all just kind of stare at you, don't really speak much, or just never smile and have an annoyed look on their face. Given this was the first time I've been here, and it had only been about a couple of weeks after they opened, but still, felt really unfriendly and unwelcoming on this first visit. The prices here are a bit expensive considering what they're selling. Just to note, even though chang fen is a dim sum item, this is not really a dim sum spot, so don't drop in here looking for dim sum. Again, they're much more like a noodles and porridge place if anything. But when taking that into account, you're kind of paying a lot of just porridge and noodles. Let's talk a bit about the food. We ordered a few dishes to try them out. The porridge was alright. The flavors were pretty good, but there wasn't quite enough ingredients in there, particularly the meat, that made it feel that worthwhile. It also wasn't a very good portion, as the bowl it comes in just looks big, but it has that narrow bottom, so just a wide upper bowl, but a slim bottom bowl. The wonton noodles were a bit disappointing. The soup has absolutely no flavor to it, and this was after I already added other stuff to flavor, so you can tell how flavorless it was to begin with. The noodles were fine, basic egg noodles soup. The most disappointing part were the wontons though, and the filling was just not very good. Portions again with this was not great. The only thing that was somewhat decent were the chicken wings, but the wings are very small, so you really won't get any fill of them if you have multiple people with you. All in all, Yin Ji Chang Fen was a bit of a disappointment. I had been excited awhile back when I first saw their coming soon images on the store, but after actually trying them out it's not what I had thought it would be. Overpriced for the amount of food you actually get here, and the food wasn't even all flavored that well across the board of what we had. Who knows, maybe the only good thing is their chang fen, but all the other stuff we had today were meh. And hopefully the service will improve, because to pay that price, and get mediocre food with bad service is not a thing anybody wants. read more

Our food got to us rather quickly after being ordered. Shu Mai: A staple in most dim sum places. There is pork and it was just ok to me. Nothing really special compared to other dim sum places I had. Decent at best. BBQ Pork Rice Roll: It might look deceiving but it was a bit on the bland side even when sitting in the sauce. The rice roll itself couldn't absorb much of the sauce. The pork was cooked fine, but the vegetables inside was leaning towards raw over cooked. Still, it was just alright. Beef Congee: Honestly my favorite item. For a cold night, it was warm and filling. They give a lot for just one bowl, and I was able to eat half and save the other half tomorrow. For beef, it gave it more flavor than what rice porridge would normally have, hence the darker color.
