    Classic Hot and Sour Soup
    Roy A.

I was craving SIchuan Chinese food as it was not readily available in VA. My wife discovered this near our favorite movie theater so we dropped in for lunch and I thrilled we did. We started with the hot and sour soup which was great and then the main dishes of salt and pepper prawns and Kung pow chicken. We enjoyed the meal and the tasty tea. Service was excellent and I'm thrilled we found a great spot for lunch or dinner.

We were celebrating my friend's birthday and she decided she wanted to give this place a try. I honestly never noticed this restaurant before, since it is off the Main Street, but I am always down to try our new places. There is ample seating inside, and we were sat towards the back in a secluded area. The waitress that day looked to be an older lady and she was running the entire store in terms of waiting. Vegetable Fried Rice: Pretty simple and straightforward. Ample amount to share between 5 of us. The vegetables and rice were cooked nicely. Cumin Lamb: This has such an overwhelming aroma of the cumin spice. This was not subtle at all, and if you like cumin, this is the dish for you. The lamb meat was cooked thoroughly and I enjoyed the flavors overall, but I found it a bit too strong and aromatic for me. Shredded pork in garlic sauce: My favorite dish that we ordered. The pork was cooked well and the sauce was delicious. I always enjoy this dish when I go out to eat and this place did it justice. Shredded Potato Spicy: This was a rather interesting dish. Just shredded potatoes. We asked for spicy, and I honestly couldn't tell you if it was spicy or not. It was subtle. I honestly wished we tried the sour and spicy version now, since I honestly didn't find anything too special about it. Overall, I had a great time with my friends trying this place out. Would I try it again? Probably

Moist and sweet and tasty numbing pork shoulder. Picture taken after first taste

Went out for lunch with 3/10/24 Sichuan is located in a quiet area. Outside, no wannabe macho men making vehicular racket. Inside, no misbehaving parents training their children to be noisy neighbors. My not so clean daughter had Some Nerve to complain about smudge in her teacup. The waiter explained that "the cups are clay and the tea stain is impossible to remove". I'm thinking of calling it tea patina maybe? The service and presentation was Fine, Almost Everything tasted delicious. That interesting Szechuan spice yummy umm. Moist pork shoulder with crunchy and chewy skin oh yes.. Lip numbing tofu squares pressing sweetly on my tongue! Save me! Take me back for more! Ok I'm getting carried away but it was a very good meal and worth 60 miles on the odometer. Almost all the dishes were perfect. The only complaints? The potsticker wrapper was a bit chewy. Also the Walnut Prawns were conspicuously short on walnuts and one son wanted more sweet sauce on them. I found them refreshingly not too sweet. Check out the pics. And visit my new gem in Pleasant Hill.

Speaking as a Sichuan local, I can vouch for how authentic the Sichuan food here is. Their Northeastern dishes are great too, prices are fair, and the service is excellent. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try!

I love SzeChuan style. Recently there are couple different similar ones open in Concord/Pleasant Hill area. After searching Yelp, I noticed that there is another one in Pleasant Hill that I have never tried before. This is the one. I pick the time when they just opened for the business. You can tell this is not a new establishment (later learn that they have been in business for 20? Years) but they keep it pretty clean, which I prefer to be a clean environment. All the different dishes that we order are awesome, I like everything. The price and the portion they provide is just right I think. Staff is willing to give us room to think and leave us alone. For a small business like this, they earn 5 starts in my opinion and I will definitely try it again.

The only "disappointing" thing was that they did not have the appetizer sampler available anymore and the calamari was not available at the time that we ordered. But not a super big deal. When I went in to pick up, they were just direct and straight to the point, which I think is what some people confused with being "rude" in some of the other reviews I read. But in reality, its just straight up. They did seem very grateful that I came in and ordered, so I will be back when that craving strikes again.

The whole dinner, In our opinion we felt as if we were being yelled at, the hospitality here is well below average and definitely not inviting at all. Short high toned responses. Here, they really try to work around your schedule, and that small detail says a lot. One small note, just to be fair... when ordering for pickup, and even once during pickup, my wife felt the person at the door was a little brisk with her. She jokingly compared it to dealing with a car dealership, in regards to their "attitude" with her. I've never personally had that experience, so apparently I'm the designated pickup person now. This place means a lot to my family and I. We have been coming here before I was born. I have many fond memories of eating here with my grandparents and the delicious food they offered. And finally, I will give it one last hooray before they close the doors. It was packed today, with waiting for lunch taking about 20 minutes before my name was called. I am happy for their business they are getting in the last few days but I would recommend coming here earlier than your anticipated eating time. Family Style Tofu: My all time favorite dish. It is fried tofu in a brown sauce with mixed vegetables. For their lunch special, it came with a bowl of hot & sour soup, fried rice, a crispy spring roll and a fried wonton. All of it was delicious. The tofu was fried perfectly for me and there was ample amount of vegetables. The spring rolls was filling for being vegetarian and the fried wonton was crispy as well. The soup was extra sour, which I personally liked. Although, my one issue was the brown sauce was a bit on the salty side. Still, I throughly enjoyed my meal and had enough leftover for a second one. Ahh, Chef Choy. Been on this planet for almost 35 years and it is tough to see them go. I hope they will open again soon but if not, thanks for the memories and wishing the best for the staff.

You can see the generations and the dudes family has celebrated birthdays, graduations, promotions, and random Tuesday cravings for decades. As a vegetarian, I didn't get to try the meat dishes everyone else at the table ordered, but let me tell you something... the tofu string beans and fried rice were probably some of the best vegetarian Chinese dishes I've ever had. And I do not say that lightly because vegetarian options sometimes get treated like sad side salads The string beans and tofu were flavorful, savory, perfectly cooked, and honestly the star of the table for me. The fried rice was pure comfort food energy. Simple, nostalgic, satisfying. The hot and sour soup personally wasn't my favorite because it leaned a little too tart for my taste, but everyone else seemed to love it. The Fried banana bites with vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle, chocolate drizzle, whipped cream... absolutely unnecessary in the best possible way. Tiny crispy dopamine orbs. What made this experience special was seeing families gathered together in a place that clearly means something to the community. Restaurants like this become woven into people's lives. That matters. Congratulations to the Chef Choy team on retirement. Pleasant Hill is losing a longtime staple and so many families are walking away with memories tied to this place.
