A group of Asian American ladies met here for lunch, and it was such a fun experience! We decided to share our individual choices family-style--much like eating dim sum--which allowed us to get a taste of every dish. We all left knowing we'd definitely be back with our families and friends. The ultimate highlight for me was a surprisingly unique Salt and Pepper Squid. I am not usually a squid lover, but this beautiful dish instantly enticed me. The squid was presented almost like cauliflower and cooked to crisp perfection, complemented by vibrant red and green peppers. What is often a tasteless ingredient was bursting with rich umami flavor! The Changsha Chicken Clay Pot was packed with flavor and tender chicken. Similarly, the Seafood Tofu Clay Pot--a Cantonese classic--was exceptionally well prepared. The Cumin Lamb was incredibly tender; while I don't eat lamb myself, the rest of our table absolutely loved it. Even the Orange Peel Chicken (or General Tso's)--a classic Americanized Chinese dish with fried chicken in a sweet and sour sauce--was a big hit with those who ordered it. Lunch was also served with their signature pickled vegetables, fried peanuts, and a choice of hot and sour or corn soup--all of which were delicious. Located in a quiet corner of the Countrywood Shopping Center, Sichuan House is a spinoff of the highly popular Sichuan Fortune House in Pleasant Hill. I consistently go here for lunch and if I'm in a pinch can get in and out in 15 minutes, which is astounding... also, the prices and portion size reflect great quality and affordability. Quite good Chinese food with pretty big portions for a reasonable price. The green onion pancake was super chewy and nice but had very little green onion in it sadly. The General Tao's chicken was sweet and tangy with big chunks of chicken and very good. The beef/steak in the Mongolian beef and beef chow fun was not great quality (though the noodles and flavor in the chow fun was very nice). The smoked shredded pork was super tasty and flavorful and unique. Definitely going to try more of the menu in the future! read more

The best Chinese "Sichuan" experience around. Tonight another perfect meal, every dish gloriously delicious. The spicy cucumber, dry green beans, eggplant with Shrimp, and charred cabbage are all amazing. Equally fabulously tasty are Bejing pork, Mongolian Lamb, fish with precious wine sauce, spicy boiled fish, chongqing chicken (amazing) and we love their fried combo rice and garlic combo noodles. We used to live in Walnut Creek many years ago and this was one of our to go restaurants because food were authentic and good. We came back yesterday and was disappointed that the standard has dropped so much. The food taste very Americanized.. just brown sauce and sweet. Spicy chicken was not spicy at all. House Special Garlic Noodles -- I initially was skeptical about other Yelpers saying they tasted like real authentic (Vietnamese style) garlic noodles, but they were correct! The noodles were Shanghai noodles style so they were thick egg noodles, and the garlic flavor really came through. I also enjoyed the house combo of chicken, shrimp, etc. Delicious, and I would definitely get this again. Cumin Beef -- the beef was flavorful and the cumin flavor came through, but there seemed to be too many distracting vegetables in this dish that took me away from the beef itself. First and foremost, I'm a typical Chinese (Canto) food kinda guy since that's what my grandmother use to make as a kid and that's typically the type of food you find here in the states. I usually don't go for Sichuan food. I just moved to the area not too long ago and I've been everywhere in the Countrywood plaza except this place. My family and I ended here by chance when the pizza joint was taking too long to seat people. We sat down and order some dishes and it was surprisingly full of people. On top of the typically Sichuan dishes we had, they also had your typical chow mein and chow fun dishes etc etc. My family and I ordered a bit of both and it was pretty dang good! I didn't think a random spot here in Walnut Creek would be good, but they've been open for a while, so that should be a tell tale sign that they are good! The service was pretty good, all the staff was attentive and really nice. The crowds there are pretty mixed with different folks so, down to try this spot again. Came in on a Saturday night, about 6pm and the restaurant was very busy. We were seated as we walked in, but it took quite some time before we got any service. They were short staffed, but doing the best they could. Everything we ordered was absolutely outstanding! This is our family's new favorite Chinese restaurant! We ordered: Beef with Bitter Melon, Crispy Beef, Salt & Pepper Fish, Honey Walnut Prawns, Combination Hong Kong Style Noodles, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, and Dry Cooked Green Beans. Five of us dropped in for lunch. They gave us a nice window table. The place was crowded, so we did feel a little ignored till the servers caught up with the other customers but once they got to us, everything moved quickly and smoothly! As soon we were seated, they brought out a plate of peanuts and cabbage in chili oil. The peanuts were fresh and crunchy. Our first bite of the cabbage sees smoke coming out of our ears. The chili oil was super spicy. We ordered a family meal for the three of us - Shanghai Style Prawns, Dry Chili Lamb and Chow Fun with extra combo. The food is OK, a little bit on the greasy side. My biggest problem is the pricing. the prices I'm charged are never the prices listed on the menu. For example, Mongolian beef is supposed to be 16.50 but the receipt says 16.95. Many of the items on the yellow paper menu they have do not match what you'll be charged as the final price. Each dish is only about $.50 of difference, but it adds up when ordering multiple dishes. This is dirty business practice. read more

Located in the Countrywood Shopping Center in Walnut Creek, right off of Treat, it had long taken over another Chinese spot years back, but I had yet to come by to try them out. Originally this place had the same owner as Sichuan Fortune House off of Contra Costa, who used to work at one of the oldest known restaurants in Walnut Creek which is now Creekhouse Dim Sum. I had eaten at Sichuan Fortune House a lot back in the day, but had not been for awhile now. Sorry, got a bit off track with the history lesson. The place isn't huge, as it's mostly still the same as it looked when the previous Chinese restaurant was opened in this location. They did change the layout of everything a bit, but that's about it. It does feel a bit old when you get inside, but again, I feel like they more or less just recycled the old restaurant way back, so it hasn't changed much. Not really a fancy place to eat, but could be worse. Came here today because I was in the area, and trying out the lunch special menu today. Looking through the menu, the prices actually aren't bad, especially considering where we were. Lunch specials have a pretty decent amount of selections, and they include rice and soup, with the option to have fried rice instead of just regular white rice. They come with the same free starter dishes as they always did back in the day, spicy cabbage and roasted peanuts. Not a bad thing to snack on while you wait for your meal, and it's free, so more power to them. The soup you have an option of, which is nice. I got the hot and sour soup. It's good. Not spicy at all, which is kind of strange, but the sour was just right, so tasted good overall. The garlic chicken here was good. It's much different than what I used to remember from Sichuan Fortune House, but this version was still good anyways so no complaints. If you like garlic, you will like this dish, as the sauce just has so much of it in there. The broccoli I sort of wish wasn't just an added side but also stir-fried with that sauce, but I think all dishes include this broccoli. Not much I can do about that. Does come with celery though, which I don't like usually, but in this sauce it wasn't an issue. The sichuan gongbao (for those unaware, it's just kung pow) shrimp was pretty good. The flavors were all there. The ingredients were nice. Fair amount of shrimp in there too. Not too spicy, flavored well. Sichuan House is a nice spot for Chinese food if you're in the area and wanted options. Particularly for this area, there's really not a whole lot of other Chinese spots immediately nearby, unless you head down to the Whole Food Ygnacio Valley area, or up Treat onto Clayton for New Lim's Garden. The prices here are decent. For the amount of food you get here, it's actually a pretty good bang for your buck, at least with the lunch special too. Glad I don't have to drive far to enjoy a great Chinese dinner. Not only was the dinner amazing, but so was the service. They have the best classic wonto soup ever. Other places I've been to, I would have to add soy sauce to enhance the flavor! Not here! Also had the garlic spicy eggplant. Sorry we didnt understand at all why this restaurant seemed popular amongst caucasians and asians (and phone kept ringing). Im Chinese, love Chinese food and love and know sichuan food. We ordered the fish fillet she recommended (boiled fish in red soup), shrimp fried rice, scallion pancake and green beans. The fish was 1/10. No flavor, weird thick sauce. I make better fried rice, had no flavor, clumpy, not fried enough. Scallion pancake was solid. Green beans were average. Not the best ive had, not the worst. Go to Tasty Sichuan in Hayward or Ping's bistro in Fremont. Or maybe its better at Chinese American food?!? Didnt order any fried food. read more

We've been going to Sichuan House since we moved here around twelve years ago, and it is our go to place whenever we crave spicy Chinese food but don't want to cook it ourselves. Most of the food is milder than the bold spicy and salty flavors iconic to Sichuan cuisine, but it still retains the core authentic flavors of the dishes without destroying your tongue and stomach in the process! Though, sometimes we do request to lower the saltiness of the dishes depending on who the main cook is that day. They often give an appetizer of roasted peanuts paired with Sichuan pickled veggies, and on occasion they give a dessert such as sweet red bean soup. Some of the dishes that our family likes to order are the Fu Ji Fei Pien (thinly sliced beef in chili oil), Spicy Stir Fry Shredded Potato, Seafood Deluxe Soup, Spicy Eggplant, Chongqing Fried Chicken (with bone), Stir Fry Pea Sprout, Mung Bean Jelly in Chili Oil, Spicy Sichuan Wontons, and Stir Fry Shredded Pork with Bamboo. These dishes are all very delicious, and even the simple ones taste very good. Food used to be good since they changed hands from previous owners. Been there several times, but had a takeout very recently, and it was pretty bad - none of the dishes was edible. The Wonton's in Wonton soup were boiled in the soup broth, and the broth was cloudy and didn't taste good. The shredded pork with Bamboo shoots and Taiwanese sauce must have been fried in a wok previously used for fish, and not washed, and the fish odor was offensive, sickening... the Bamboo shoots didn't look anything like Bamboo shoots, and the whole dish was 'floating' in oil. The Hunan smoked pork with Green beans tasted bad - The pork belly was sliced very thin, wasn't smoked, and tasted old. Green beans were wilted (noticed as soon as I got home). The only edible item in the order were the vegetables rolls. Most likely won't set foot there again. read more

I used to love this place, but just got take out dinner tonight that was a completely wrong order and not good. My dad ordered the Seafood Clay Pot, but got some type of chicken dish. I ordered the Spicy Eggplant with Shrimp and instead got the Garlic Spicy Eggplant Cake. To say that we were disappointed is an understatement. My dad refused to go back because he had waited 40 minutes for the meal and said "that's the last time I go there". Super frustrating because we paid $40 for mediocre food that we didn't order.
