The reason I'm finally writing a review is 'cause I ordered tempura here the other day and it was straight up disgusting. It was soggy and the rice was sticky and nasty. BUT THIS IS WHAT PISSES ME OFF. THEY FRIED A PICKLE SLICE AND CALLED IT TEMPURA. what the hell. okay really? they probs ran out of vegetables, looked in the fridge and just threw in a pickle slice. EW. never in my life have I had a pickle slice in a tempura mix. good bye. nope. never again I honestly don't understand why this place has reviews with other two stars!? I've been here a few times and thought it was okay. Like seriously a last resort place if you don't wanna pay much for sushi/japanese food. You get what you pay for really. but now I know I never wanna come here again. I've had their so called chicken katsu which is gonna be the driest cardboard you ever eat. read more

This is place is very different from traditional sushi restaurants. With that said, I would agree with other reviewers that the person who gave this place one star probably works with that bland average sushi restaurant down the street. I live about two exits away from this place and go to home depot all the time with my husband, so I was excited when I saw this place opening. You walk up to the window when you order and take a seat. The customer service was excellent-- there was a young lady there named Mayra who I thought was the manager or the owner but she introduced me to the owner in the back. Seems like a very friendly guy. The other girl that was working was very nice too but she wasnt wearing a name badge so I didnt get her name. They also gave me free miso soup, which was delicious. At least, as delicious as miso soup can be. ^_~ Unfortunately they were out of the "monkey banana" which they said actually tastes pretty good despite the surprising combination of ingredients. I had the deluxe sushi special which came with some spicy tuna and nigiri, and the hawaiian poki appetizer. Poki is not quite like that I used to find in Hawaii, but it was still very good. The food here is fresh, the place is clean (including the bathrooms), the customer service is right on. The only negative I can think of is that it's pretty small, and I think once people start discovering this place its going to get pretty packed in there. My roommates and I were SUPER excited when we saw that there was going to be a Yo's opening up just down the street from our apartment. We're fans of the establishments in both Fairfield and Vallejo, and couldn't wait for this one to open. The place is extremely small, but we usually just order to go and bring our food home. The sushi in my opinion is even better than the Yo's in Vallejo. Fresh, really tasty, and the best part is they don't load on TONS of rice and cut their rolls into ridiculous portions like the Yo's in Vallejo does. On top of that, what you get for your money is DEFINITELY worth it. I usually get two rolls (Air Force and Lemon Salmon, both are must try's!!) and a sashimi appetizer, and I'm out the door under $25. Good luck getting that much food at another sushi place for the same price. read more

Not really a delightful place to go to, but I don't think that's what this place is know for. It is a simple quick place to eat sushi which is mediocre in quality but balanced by a very competitive pricing curve. The sushi is cheap basically, but still good enough to eat. The kid that works there isn't exactly customer service friendly. He seems a bit lazy and doesn't like to help with questions. My girlfriend asked about getting a styrofoam cup for her drink and he tried to explain that they don't have them. Keep in mind that we go to this restaurant every now and then, and have never had a problem getting a styrofoam cup. This kid's coworker overheard and brought out a styrofoam cup. Why didn't this guy jus ask his coworkers where the cups were instead of insinuating that they never had them in the first place? This is just one incident of poor customer service. read more

This place has an extensive menu and the rolls start at $5.50 to $9. average. It is a great place to get your fix to eat fresh sushi and other Japanese dishes. It is located in a strip mall with Home Depot, Walmart, Wing Stop, L&L Hawaiian eatery, a beauty supply and haircut store, and some other stores. It is a small place and there is about 6 tables. They do have a TV monitor on the wall showing Asian pop music videos. We tried their 2 item bento box for $7.95 and ordered the chicken terriyaki and tempura. The chicken was okay and the sauce mild, the tempura was hot and crispy with 1each of shrimp, green pepper, squash, carrot, yam, carrot. Tempura is a definite winner for me, and the potato salad was delicious too (only a spoonful). A great value and worth ordering if you want a nice hot meal. The sushi special $7.95 is a 5 piece California roll and 5 pieces of nigiri. Everything was fresh and I would order this again. Other places would charge $10. or more. The Super CA $5.50 is a California roll with crab meat and topped with unagi (eel), and was a winner for me also. I love California rolls and unagi, so this combination roll is perfect. The portion of crab meat in the California roll was more then most other sushi places. Sure there are higher grade sushi at the more expensive Japanese restaurants, but if you want affordable and fresh sushi. This places offers a huge variety of choices of sushi rolls, an extensive menu of appetizers, bento boxes, udon, donburi, boba drinks, and more. I haven't tried their boba drinks, but may give them a try next time. The staff is nice and if you eat there, they bring out the food to you as soon as it's cooked and made. You do have to bus your own dishes in a tray located at the garbage can. This is not a date place, and it's mainly take out. I'll be back to try their other menu items. read more

When you first dive up there is an inviting sign. The good ends there.Its a walk up window that reminds me of a fast food restaurant but they couldn't afford enough space for more than 2 people.I had a lion king roll - no flavor and not cooked as it should be. Two pieces of miguro tuna that were large but old and tasted like they were sitting around for weeks. The pricing is the same as a full service restaurant only its no service at all. Large portions and decent quality fish for a bargain price. While not a destination restaurant, if I'm in the area I would consider coming here. I would skip the tempura. It looked to be par-cooked and finished off when there was an order. It came to the table suspiciously quick. The batter was hard. The outside of my piece of squash was just warm but the interior was cool. The chicken shoyu ramen soup was average at best but perfect for an everyday meal. The noodles were just a tad past al dente so they had some tooth but weren't mushy. The soup had too much filler including bean sprouts, cabbage and carrots. The chicken had a nice char. The broth wasn't too salty. The serving size was huge and I took half of it home. The sushi wasn't the best I eaten. The rice in the nigiri and rolls were a little too wet. They were also really loosely formed and most easily fell apart when we tried to pick them up with chopsticks. Best deals are the combos. However, with raw fish I would never gamble. Price is secondary to quality. Fortunately, the fish tasted pretty fresh. We also shared a taro slushy with tapioca pearls. The purple stuff was tasty enough but the tapioca was cold and too hard. read more

This is my "go to" sushi spot! I'm so faithful to Yo's I don't go anywhere else (unless my family wants Sushi House but I have a love/hate relationship with that place and also have a review there!). Now, let me just verify that this isn't a "wait to be seated" type of restaurant. You go up to order and find a table yourself. The restaurant is small. They probably only have like 8 tables so it isn't gonna be good for a large party. You also DONT leave your plates & garbage on the table!! The have a bucket on top of the trash can by the door where you leave everything. I live in hercules and I will DRIVE out to martinez for good sushi! Pro-tip to anyone eating sushi: ginger is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-parasitic. During or after your meal I highly recommend you eat as many slices as you can, especially if you have a weakened immune system, to defend against food poisoning. Another reviewer said this place has "no ambiance"... huh? There is fish wallpaper... there is a whole wall of sushi roll photos to stare at... there is K-Pop constantly playing on the TV... there is a nice collection of bobble-heads and super-lucky cats everywhere... there is a My Friend Totoro (the anime) poster... with the tiny amount of space they have, how much more ambiance can you pack in? The 4-star rating is what I would call a "What You Make Of It" rating. It's based off of my expectations and what I personally get there consistently, taking price into account. If I were to rate the entire menu, it would get a 3 at best. Service/Friendliness probably 4 or 5. Since I avoid what I know is bad and only pay for what's good, I can turn this overall 2 or 3-star place into a 4-star. My first time here I had no unrealistic expectations, for example, expecting the quality of the sashimi in an inexpensive sushi-chain to somehow blow my mind and be anywhere close to, say, the quality of Miso Phat Sushi in Maui - where the fish is so fresh it was literally caught that morning on the restaurant's own boat. I also got the feeling that the Teriyaki boxes and non-sushi items were going to be passable but not great, since the name is "Yo Sushi" not "Yo Sushi and Teriyaki" I'm expecting it to be all about fast cheap decent sushi. On to my recommendations: #1 thing that I get here is the Combo Sashimi w/ all Salmon. I've tried all their sashimi and as expected it was all "meh" EXCEPT FOR THE SALMON - for some reason it's much fresher, as fresh as the best sushi I've had, and has an amazing melt-in-your-mouth texture. So the dish is 16 pieces if you upgrade to all-salmon, which is definitely worth it, (comes to just under $20 out the door) and comes with rice and Miso soup. Sometimes they add lemon slices so if you want those be sure to ask. With the rolls, again capitalize on anything with salmon in it and know it's going to be solid, other than that the Lion King and Lion Prince rolls are delicious and probably super-unhealthy, but I knew that when I saw the photo of them deep-fried and covered in thick orange sauce. I probably will venture out and try a few more items but for now this is all I recommend if you're looking to get at least a 4-star experience out of this place. read more

I'm pregnant and have been hesitant about eating sushi because of the food restrictions but Carolina was absolutely amazing at helping me find the perfect meal the worked with what I could and couldn't have! Delicious, good prices, nice girl works the register, plus the K-pop videos they play are fun to watch whilst you wait :) The lack of star number 5 is that they charge for substitutions on the combos and there's no option for a sashimi meal with out rice and soup. I have found the sushi spot! Superb attentive helpful staff (even though they are behind the counter), huge assortment of rolls to pick from (majority of them are below $10) and clean poppy adorable decor deserves a 5 star rating. We had 5 rolls and all of them was devoured and enjoyed. I know there are more sushi places for me to try but for now, I claim this as the spot to fulfill all my sushi needs. I love Yo Sushi, but today, it's not working for me in the Martinez Ca restaurant. They got my order wrong, and even the part they got, they didn't set up right (forgot the soup, which usually comes with and even came with my 2nd order of the same thing). Once upon a time, Yo Sushi wad only in Fairfield Ca. Then the spread to Vallejo Ca cuz they were making business, because they're great. Then came Martinez after. Martinez branch has been very different than the other 2. It seems I'm not the only one to feel this way. Though the prices and selection are the same, expect not as good quality, and double-check to-go orders. read more

I am not sure why I am so judgmental, just because a sushi joint is in the same parking lot as Wal-Mart. After a couple of visits my expectations have been reset. It is decent. The good is that there is ample parking and the food is on par with other places in the area. (I will say that I had the sake nigiri and it was spit-it-out not good). The downside is that for a mostly take away location, there is no table service, the prices are high. There is nothing about it Manpuku Berkeley inexpensive. It can also get busy on top of the slow service to begin with. If you are craving a roll, this is a great place. If you are looking for a sit down sushi there are better options for the same cost. However, none of them will be found in Martinez. What did I learn today? At least you can watch Japanese boy bands while you wait. read more

Somehow, I think I like this location better than the original one in Fairfield. I know this is not top-quality sushi but this is fast casual eats at a good price point, and the fish just tastes better here, the rolls are better prepared, the service is friendlier, they are wayyy less crowded and have tables to eat at, and enjoyable K-pop videos on loop. Also, the fact that this is on the other side of the bridge and I don't have to pay toll makes this my favorite location of all the Yo Sushi spots. read more

Definitely fast food style sushi as it shows in their lack of presentation, thinner slices of fish on nigiri pieces and not being able to connect nori from end to end with their rolls. Tastes like Safeway bought sushi - maybe not even that good. Chicken teriyaki was nothing spectacular - cooked chicken smothered in sweet teriyaki sauce. My guess for the overall four star rating is due to customer's low expectations. The only saving grace is not getting food poisoning. read more

I really enjoyed the reasonable priced lunches although they don't really come with much. I got the 5-Piece Sushi and California Roll lunch special for about $9 and my friend got the Tonkatsu Ramen for just under $9. My lunch came with Nigiri (Ahi/Tuna, Sake/Salmon, Ebi/Shrimp, Tomago/Egg and one other piece which I can't remember. All were quite big as well as 6 good sized pieces of California Roll. I would have preferred one bowl of Miso soup or a salad but still a good price and the sushi was all good except for one. The Tamago was too sweet and too hard. My friend's Tonkatsu Ramen broth had good flavor but I think of Pork Tonkatsu as breaded with Panko crumbs and fried then placed on top of the Ramen Noodles. This Ramen noodle soup had ;a few pieces of pork inside the soup so we were a bit surprised and disappointed by that. One thing I really liked was that when I asked if I could have a side of Japanese Potato Salad, they gave me 3 small scoops for free. Rarely do you get something like that for free but I have them an extra star for that and for a lunch meal for two at $20. I would definitely go back. read more

We would switch up our sushi rolls on most days but we almost always stuck with ordering the 'Crunchy roll'. Last time we ordered it, we were only able to take one bite before we had to spit it out and throw the rest away. The 'crunchy' part of the roll tasted old, and stale. We love this place! It's a super easy option when we don't feel like cooking. For less than forty bucks, we get a meal for almost four people. We always get the small party platter! Full of yummy goodness! It's affordable and fresh. We tried requesting to not have the wasabi and ginger a couple times but they keep putting it in the platter anyway. LOL! Tried the deep-fried oysters one time too but there was nothing special about it though, it wasn't bad but it wasn't that good either. However, the sushi rolls are the bomb! Had a not-so-good take out experience this weekend. Tried the Chicken Katsu to see if it was edible compared to the Chicken Teriyaki, and unfortunately it wasn't. The breadcrumb coating isn't the problem, it's the chicken- rubbery and smells funny. The Tempura came with really yucky green peppers and bitter tasting squash. The rest was great, but tempura covered green peppers? Who would like this, really?? Still, the salad and sushi is very yummy, so you just have to pick and choose the rest of your items carefully.
