Yo Sushi is a big deal in the East Bay. They have three locations - Fairfield, Vallejo, and now Martinez. For years I've been going to Yo's. Almost consistently delicious in Fairfield for the years that I've been there (and Vallejo also), it has been slightly disappointing to see that the location in Martinez is, from my experiences, slightly sub-par to the other locations. I always get the Sushi and Sashimi, or a Deluxe Sushi Special. It has Nigiri, a basic roll (ca or spicy tuna), and the sashimi (you guessed it, on the sushi and sashimi meal). The roll and fish doesn't seem fresh. The slices have skimped down, the prices up. The presentation (compared to years ago), uninspired. Now granted, I'm no connoisseur on fish. And yes, this is also a small take out style (they don't take your order at the table). But let's compare it to the other locations and combine that with being a customer for a long time.. you get a disappointment, unfortunately. I want to like this and I want to keep going here, is what I'm saying. On a trip to Fairfield it has become a big deal because I'm excited to get the fish from the original Yo's. Anyway, I tried a lot of rolls here. Some of my favorites are Martinez and North Texas. They are good, but sometimes not consistent. The roll is sometimes smaller than before, and not as well made from the looks of it. Not something you want to see when you spend your money on your favorites. Would I recommend this place? This used to be our go-to japanese place since they opened. Final and biggest disappointment was our takeout tonight. They no longer include miso soup with the combination dinners. My husband's tempura was all vegetables with no shrimp in it. Our tonkatsu was pounded paper thin and overcooked. NOTHING like it used to be, smaller portions and the cost was no less even with the small bento containers they come in. Will not be returning again nor recommending it to anyone else. Update: Been back out of desperation for sushi. Perhaps the competition of a new Thai/Chinese restaurant next door has made them up their game. Pretty cheap and affordable. They pretty fast on making your food too. I would avoid dining in during lunch cause seating is limited. For parties if get the sushi try. The food is awesome. The website is AWFUL. We placed an order for Martinez and it went to Vallejo. Apparently this is the 3rd time today that this has happened. The customer service when told about the issue is for lousy. Guy behind the counter could have cared less. Tried this place because my dad loved the one in Fairfield and let me know there was another location in Martinez. Placed an order last week for pick up as I was leaving work and it was ready by the time I got there 10-15 mins later. I got the lemon salmon roll, my all time favorite type of roll, and I tried the tempura rainbow roll as well. The menu didn't state that they use fake crab as a topping for the rainbow roll so I was pretty disappointed with that one, it ruined what would have been a good roll. The lemon salmon roll was great though. It's a good place to pick up a quick bite of sushi, I would try it again and avoid rolls with fake crab meat. read more

Pretty good quick Japanese chow at a reasonable price. No it's not Miraku in Walnut Creek, or other high end Japanese restaurant around Dublin, but neither is the price. Usually tastes better around lunch when the day crew runs the show. In response to Katy M. I've eaten in Asian night markets goring myself without issue, where Japanese tourists are afraid to eat, and stray dogs eat anything dropped on the ground. Only place I've had issue, was an American mid range chain restaurant in Walnut Creek. Over the past 30 years since, I've learned how to tell when food is spoiled. Heard about this place and finally went to try it out. Its the best decision for me that day. Everything we ordered was just perfect. My daughter ordered the lunch special and it was plenty. I had the Sushi Combo (Tuna and Salmon) that was so fresh and were big portions. I was really satisfied not just the big portions but the price itself. My husband had the Hamachi Sashimi. He devoured that quick and was happy! I will definitely come here again and again. Its a small place so it might get crowded at times but worth the wait. Everyone at the counter were friendly and waiting is just minutes for the food. The only comment I can make is really not even a big deal but you have to pay for tea. I live in Martinez and want to support all new businesses...but I will not go to this place again. First - This place is walk up window Sushi. So one would expect it to be cheaper....Not!!! This place is expensive and the service is not great. Its a bunch of kids in the kitchen making Sushi. Really! Do you want your sushi made by a bunch of high school kids? If so, it better be cheap. Rolls are $4.50 cheapest to $12. Sashimi is $10 to $15. The place is super small and very loud. Next, and most importantly...the sushi is not good. I love sushi and know what I am talking about. My tuna was a weird color. It looked like it had been colored with pink food coloring. It did not taste like tuna either. Same with the Salmon....I am sure both were colored and were not even what they said they were. Next my rolls...they were falling apart and really wet. My spicy tuna rolls were dripping when I picked them up. Later that night my stomach hurt and it was making horrible noises!!! Yikes! Sorry Yo Sushi...if you want to offer and serve "fast food sushi" you need to lower your prices and serve fresh fish that is not food colored. I think I will stay with going to Hanabi Sushi down the street in the Lucky plaza. Hanabi has the same prices, real fresh fish, and a REAL SUSHI Chef making the sushi. This is not at all a reflection of the owners or other staff members. This review is solely for Colin (or at least I think that's his name as it was listed on our receipt). We arrived here for a quick bite at 8:25pm. After waiting around for about 5 minutes, a new teenage face standing in the hallway pokes his head out and asks if we're ready to order. I said yes. Still in the hallway, he said, "What do you want?" We ordered ramen and two basic rolls. He said, "Okay but you have to take it to go." (Keep in mind, this is a fast food joint) said "Aw really? I'm sure we'll be out of here before 9pm." He contemplated then said "but it takes 15 minutes to prepare", proceeded to the cash register, sighed and said we could just eat here. When we sat down, we all agreed he must be new as the owners and staff are typically over-accommodating. My sister ordered tea to later take to go, so she asked Colin for a styrofoam cup. Mr. Bossman Colin said, "We don't have styrofoam cups. They're banned." My sister and I looked at each other surprised and asked when this took place. Colin then said "uhhh I'll go check..". Minutes later the "banned" styrofoam reappeared. My sister said thank you and asked if she can have sugar. Colin comes back with probably the closest thing his arm could reach and hands her a Splenda. My sister said, "Oh, not Splenda. White sugar." Bossman Colin said (lol yet again), "We don't carry white sugar because we don't use it." My sister, certain that they do, asked, "Are you sure its not in the back?" and points to where it's usually stored. He reluctantly heads to the back and comes out with sugar AND the owner who recognizes my sister and asks how our mom is doing. Colin proceeds to eating in the corner of the kitchen, while the rest of the staff scrub and clean. We joked and said maybe he was just hangry this whole time. I don't know if Colin is plain lazy or if he thinks he's runnin' things or if was just in a hurry to get off work. The food here is great! I would have to give it a 5 out 5. I recently went to the restaurant, and seeing their large menu with so many choices was so overwhelming, but this isn't a bad thing! I chose a couple of rolls, one that started with crazy and their deluxe ca, and a couple of others that I don't know at the top of my head. So as for food, 5/5! For customer service, I'll say 5/5. They are extremely friendly there, and they greet you upon arriving. You feel so welcomed, and the girls are absolute sweet hearts. You too guys. The environment is friendly, and that's great. Been going here pretty consistently the last two years since it's close to my house and fairly inexpensive but lately the quality of fish and rice seems to be lacking. The fish is cut too thick and the rice is a little dry. At time the island roll is delicious but recently, it's had no flavor. Their food is always fresh & made to order. They have a HUGE selection of rolls, I'm talking like practically over a hundred. & other cool stuff on the menu that they made up themselves, like yo nachos, jalapeño shooters. I was told this place was amazing because the sushi was good. However, after judging compared to the quality of traditional sushi spots I would give this place a D. I love sushi and I expect hi quality fish. First lets look at the color of the tuna and salmon. It was dull with a brownish tinge. This is a very bad sign. Second it had a different distinct smell. The service was great and food was cheap.Their Katsu was good but the tempura was extremely oily. I believe they cater to the rolling loving or non-sashime eating individuals. I like traditional Japanese food. Good nigiri and sashime so I expect great quality, fresh fish. A lot of individuals talk about value but the reality is they are paying for crap. Newly opened in Martinez (where I work) a co-worker suggested it and I was skeptical as I have a favorite sushi place in Pl Hill I stop at on my way to work. I was very pleased with my meal from Yo Sushi. I got the 2 item meal; chicken teriyaki and tempura. Very good! The tempura is very crunchy and to me not very greasy at all which I like. Chicken is fresh, not gristly and plenty of sauce. Watch out , the Miso soup is wicked hot, burned my mouth but still yummy when it cools down. So far, the staff have been friendly and my food is always ready on time. I have not eaten inside as I usually get it to go, but have had it a few more times now. Talk about coming-up on a whim~ in the middle of busting a mission, on a busy day, w/limited time... the fiancé wanted a "snack", I had business @Walmart, and we had the rest of my to-do list pending... I guess he owns a watch too?! :( because he shared with me that it's not between 11AM-3PM and the lunch special can be ordered as a '2 item special' for an increased price. I wanted the chicken teriyaki, the fiancé wanted the California rolls, so I ordered them as such.. Erin was awesome enough to suggest the 2 item special, now at a discounted price when compared to the items individually--THANKS ERIN! I was really impressed with this place! We are always excited to see now places open up locally, and Yo Sushi is a winner. We tried to Martinez roll, Spicy Rainbow, the Titanic & the Catalina Summer, as well as some miso soup and salads. The rolls were all great - huge and fresh and delish. The soup was very tasty, and overall it was a great experience. We got 4 fancy rolls, soups and salads for $35 with a $5 off coupon, would have been well over $50 anywhere else. I guess I should lower my expectations, since it is a fast food sushi joint...but the rolls weren't even connected and fell apart which makes trying to use chopsticks very difficult. The angry lion king roll was good, and the lemon salmon was good, but it wasn't great. It was cheap, and i guess you get what you pay for. I do like that they have Boba. Don't come in here expecting a regular old sushi place because it's not...it's built for take out although I would like to see them take a little bit more care when rolling the sushi so it doesn't fall apart. read more

as a sushi lover, finding the right place to get my sushi fix has been somewhat of a challenge. however, I am happy to say that yo sushi has captured my full attention and I will definitely become a regular customer. the first time I was in yo sushi, the girl behind the counter, Juliana I believe her name was, provided excellent customer service and helped me choose what to order. her knowledge of the items on the menu was a great help and I was fully satisfied with what she helped me pick. the vibes in yo sushi are great, and all the workers were very nice and polite, props to them. the prices are reasonable and the quality rivals the one that you would expect at a super expensive sushi restaurant. Its a small place so I took my food to go. The selection of food here is huge!! So I ordered for the whole family and got a lot of rolls. The lady behind the counter was very nice and attentive.
