I was having one of those moments when I had the wind knocked out of me. A sad encounter with an ex, blah blah.... Anyway, all the plans I had for tonight have been completely derailed; and then I looked up and saw from the corner of my eye the "Yogurtland" store front. I thought to myself a thought a stereotypical white woman would do...: "drown the pain in frozen delicacies!" So for the first time in ages, I entirely fill up the smallest size cup that I they had. Have you ever had your favorite flavor and not enjoyed it? I have. Been coming here for at least 10 years with no complaints other than chocolate ice cream sometimes supplanting chocolate yogurt. After checking the online flavor finder, I knew they had it in stock, and I was excited about getting some chocolate yogurt. And just got the rudest young women behind the counter who would not let me use the bathroom because they said it was for customers. I said I was here to be a customer. Then they changed the story to saying it was broken. I just wanted to wash my dirty hands & use the bathroom before I got my yogurt. Is that too much to ask? Clearly yes. They told me to try another store down the street. After trying a few places, I went back and asked again to use the bathroom. They again refused, saying it was broken. I said, that initially I was told it was for customers and that I just wanted to wash my hands and use the bathroom before getting my yogurt. I was told that they would let me use it if they could, but it was broken and there was nothing they could do about it. I asked for hand sanitizer, they said they didn't have any. I asked for them to wet some napkins for me so I could wipe my hands off at the very least. After telling me it was broken, the cashier gave the door code out to someone else - in Spanish. Well, I speak Spanish perfectly well. I asked why she did that. She said it was because she is a customer. Wow, really? I got the code from the customer and the other customer was apologizing to me and saying I shouldn't let this ruin my day and how sorry she was. She didn't even use the bathroom; I think she was asking for me. I bought my yogurt, and they were literally hustling me out the door because I gave them a piece of my mind about how they should not treat customer like that. I can't believe they were so incredibly rude. I was dressed nicely. I asked nicely at first. It was a slow day in Santa Barbara, maybe I was dressed too touristy? Do they hate leopard shirts? Visors? Did they want to see me suffer for some reason. I just can't figure it out. This has literally never happened at any Yogurtland. read more

Busy, busy. busy. They get lots of business and should probably have more people staffed to work the floor as it gets MESSY. There was a line to get to the toppings bar, and some of the topping spoons were "double dipped" into other topping containers (my pet peeve). I wish someone was actively responsible for maintaining this area and also refilling! I don't want to top my yogurt with goodies I had to SCRAPE out from the bottom of the container. Also, I noticed some of the flavors here at this location had a bit of a watery texture.. so I avoided those ones. I'm not a huge fan of frozen yogurt, but I must say that Yogurtland really delivers where it counts (at least what is most important to me). Good selection of flavors. Good taste. Texture is not too soft. Good variety of toppings. Decent syrups. And very reasonably priced ($0.30 per ounce). This Yogurtland, located on State Street in Santa Barbara, is not much different than other Yogurtlands out there. I tried their pistachio flavor, which was good. I also tried their lychee flavor--I definitely could taste the lychee; decent but maybe not for me. They have a lot of toppings and I went with some Fruity Pebbles, Cap'n Crunch and bananas. They had a lot of other stuff you would come to expect such as other kinds of fresh fruit, candy bars, cheesecake bites, chocolate chips, and so on. They had nice big Ghirardelli syrup dispensers. I tried the caramel and it was good. I went a little bigger than I usually do and my total was in the $3 range. Usually, I'm in the $2.50 range at Yogurtland. Service was pretty quick. There was a little bit of a line, which is often the case at Yogurtland shops. It can be a little frustrating because I worry that my frozen yogurt is going to melt. Of the self-serve frozen yogurt places I've tried, I would have to put Yogurtland at the top (though I could not really tell you what makes one frozen yogurt better than another one so the affordability of Yogurtland is weighing heavily here). Cherry On Top has a lot of toppings, but their frozen yogurt is too soft. Menchies has a lot of toppings too and their frozen yogurt has a nice texture, but they are too expensive. There are other frozen yogurt places out there, but for me at least they don't seem to provide a significant advantage over Yogurtland. Parking is available on the street (though hard to find); parking is also available at a nearby lot that is free for the first 75 minutes. read more

As someone who doesn't much like sweets outside of the more obscure ones like bananas foster, I was surprised to LOVE Yogurtland as much as I did. Not all of the flavors were good. I tried about 30-40% of their offerings in my one tiny cup (don't do that, by the way, it melts funny), and enjoyed the basic staples the most but the stellar one for me was the lemon. A friend took me to Yogurtland on my last foray into Santa Barbara, in part an attempt to soothe me from my flight cancellation, and also so that he could share with me my virgin voyage on the Yogurtland ship. In Portland we have a Goodwill store called The Bins where giant bins are filled with random goodies and you can stock up your cart with whatever looks good and then pay by the pound. Yogurtland is The Bins of soft-serve frozen yogurt. But better. And Portland needs one. BADLY. Being new to the concept, we wandered in off State Street for some frozen goodness and did a quick recon of the situation. We got in line, grabbed a cup and waited patiently before we could actually get to the wall of yogurt spigots . Deciding was the hardest part. Each self-serve unit offered two flavors each, one on the left, one on the right, and a sexy little flavor twist of both in the middle. I didn't count, but I'd say there must have been about 16-20 flavors in all. I chose the newest flavors - Nutter Butter and S'mores, as well as the classic toasted coconut and Oreo cookie. That's right people - 4 flavors!! In one cup!! And I could have gone for more because it's SELF SERVE which means YOU have the control! A little bit of this, a lot of that, whatever your little heart desires. And THEN there is the toppings bar. OMG. Everything you can imagine from fresh fruits to nuts to cookies to candy. I put some crumbled Oreos on the Oreo cookie yogurt, some coconut on the toasted coconut yogurt, crumbled peanut butter cups on the Nutter Butter yogurt, and then threw in a couple Nilla wafers for good measure. As if all this yummy goodness wasn't enough, I reached the end of the line, and set my cup on the scale by the register. At $.30 an ounce it's hard to go wrong. I got a huge cup of delicious for $3.00, made to order by the only person who knows exactly how I like it - ME. In a way I am glad we don't have one because I might be there all the time. The wall of self-serve yogurt (16 flavors to be exact) was a welcomed sight after a long walk down State street on a sunny afternoon. The cheery interior combined with friendly staff made for a pleasant experience. I especially enjoyed the seasonal flavors (blood orange, pumpkin pie) that were made from real fruit. Some of these other froyo establishments don't offer the wonderous topping I discovered at Yogurtland 2) Price, by weight, you really get your monies worth. I only paid like $3.50 for what would be like $7.00 at a Cold Stone, and my bowl was filled with berries and fruit and froyo!!!! That's all I'm really asking for in a froyo place. What I love about Yogurtland is that there are SO many combinations YOU can choose. Talk about have it your way! Toppings, yogurt, sauces and more. You've got your traditional flavors then a whole slew of other ones to try. Make sure to ask for sample cups at the front before you get a heaping amount in your own bowl. If you don't know where to go for dessert or to satisfy a sweet tooth then Yogurtland is your place. The only caveat is what goes into the yogurt. We think we like this place, but to be frank, we were about 7 drinks into the night. The yogurt was, of course, delicious, but Drunken Evil was thrown off by Yogurtland. The self-serve wall of yogurt was loads of fun, but the problem is they give you only 1 size cup...and then they weigh it and charge accordingly. Drunken Evil did not know about the weighing process, so we filled that cup up to the top with more yogurt than 3 people could reasonably eat. $7 later and we were back on the Pub Tour. read more

Wow, I was really impressed. I expected it to be a mess like the Yogurtland I went to in San Diego. It was cheap just like my America's Cup in Costa Mesa, only $0.30 an ounce. And their plain tart and pomegranate raspberry tasted just as good as Pinkberry if not better. I can't say I really liked the other flavors but it was great for tart. I am a fro-yo fiend and I was excited for a self-serve place to open up downtown. I love the concept, but unfortunately I was really disappointed with the yogurt itself. It wasn't horrible, but it tasted really artificial. I ate about half of it and threw the rest away. This is unheard of when it comes to me and frozen yogurt. If you like the self-serve idea, I would recommend Sweet Alley in Isla Vista. They have really really good flavors that taste delicious (Root Beer is my absolute favorite), and tons of toppings (even more than Yogurtland I think). They're also locally owned. read more

5 stars for the yogurt: the coconut is the best frozen coconut dessert--including ice cream--I've ever eaten. Mind-blowing if you like coconut and the texture is perfect. Kona coffee outstanding as well. I liked the vanilla bean and NY cheesecake too. The raspberry is icy but if you like that texture, it's good. Tons of toppings plus whipped cream. MUCH cheaper than Pinkberry. So why 4 stars? THE most obnoxious music and the Disney tie-ins feel very whorish to me, but perhaps Disney and Looney Tunes are subsidizing the yogurt and keeping the price low so it's a trade-off. Also this is NOT a great location. Pinkberry is great because you can park in a 15 minute spot in De La Guerra Plaza. The parking here is just mall parking and that sucks so I can't begin to comprehend IB's "great location" remark. I had a huge yogurt after small breakfast and no lunch on a beastly hot day in SB, which invariably offends me more than a hot humid day in Manhattan because if you go to the city in the summer, you have no business griping about the meteorological misery. Yogurtland is hands down the best frozen yogurt in the country. I have been to this location probably 50 times so it gets my review, but really, every Yogurtland is amazing. The self-serve fro-yo craze has been around for a few years now, and while the enthusiasm for it is beginning to die down, I don't think that means all fro-yo places are doomed, just the ones that aren't completely on top of their game. I think we really have reached peak fro-yo status, and the lesser places will begin to start dying off as a new craze takes hold. My money is on do-it-yourself oatmeal bars. However, Yogurtland leads the pack, and I think it truly is here to stay. Having to deal with the nonsense of FrozenYo and other imitators in DC, not only is the yogurt here far more delicious, it is also much much MUCH cheaper. Free samples don't hurt either. I was pleasantly surprised on a trip to Santa Barbara to discover (through my god son) this place. They have a fun atmosphere, lots of toppings (though no marshmallows :( and a very good selection of yogurts to choose from. I decided to go the fattening route since after all, it was his belated birthday celebration. When I got to the counter after piling up m & m's, oreo's, gummy bears, chocolate chips and animal cookies I expected my wallet to be busted open and to have to live off my piggy bank for a while. The cashier told me $2.60 and I almost dropped to the floor. I couldn't believe it. Now I am an ice cream fan but this is a good way to eat a little healthier (next time I am getting a more fruit based yogurt and healthy fruit toppings) at a very reasonable price. I personally prefer self-serve style. With larger cups, it is convenient for you to pour whatever size that your in the mood for with plenty of room to store your toppings. This will allow you to scoop your perfect bite each and every time. Isn't it prefect? :) So I've been here once, and I am already obsessed with their plentiful amount of toppings and flavors. I sometimes throw in some circus animals if I'm feeling kinda adventurous. :P The taro flavor is always my go to one, as is the strawberry and mango. I recently got obsessed with the berry flavor, and I also like to sample almost every flavor that I would love to try.
