Came in for lunch and there was hardly anyone there. Sushi took 30 minutes for it to get to our party (a couple sitting behind us waited an hour and decided to leave). They tried to compensate it by giving free miso soup which we thought was pretty nice. Got our order and the rolls were falling apart and soggy. Too much avocado cannot compensate for "freshness". The setting is much as described in the earlier reviews. The strip mall setting and a wonderful entertaining sushi chef the locals called Charlie. A good sushi bar has at least a few "free" extras, as this one did, such as serving a portion of edamame on arrival and a cut orange at the end of the meal. We had altogether a Spicy Hawaiian Roll, a Mexican Roll, a Rainbow Roll, the baked Dynamite appetizer, and the assorted Tempura appetizer. Of course, a large Sapporo for each of us complemented the meal. To be very serious about the meal, i should have deducted a star for a slightly (sigh) fishy taste of the ahi/tuna on the Hawaiian Roll. But, the feeling is that was an exception rather than the rule at this place that has friendly attentive service. Everything else was tasty and enjoyable. read more

I was introduced to yokozuna recently through a friend who just randomly dropped in. I'm happy to say it is simply amazing. I'm a college student with a part time job but I always find a way to cover lunch or dinner a few times a week. Jun is a great chef and funny guy. When you go, i highly recommend sitting at the bar to get to know him. If you ask him to surprise you with something else off of the menu his creativity shines. Great food, quality fish. Every time we visit my friend Vivian in Oxnard, we usually end up here, the Bentos are good and so is the sushi, when we usually go its always empty so service is quick, the green tea fried ice cream never disappoints, the owner is so nice, she gives my baby rice and miso soup on the house! Was once our #1 sushi bar to go to in Oxnard. But unfortunately for my wife and I we experienced the worst possible situation at a restaurant in our opinion. They had cockroaches crawling around, on cams close enough to my wife's purse that she let out a small yell. I sorta laughed because I know that she fears bugs in general, but in a restaurant? I just had a great lunch here. I got the 'Lunch only' combo, which comes with 4 pieces of assorted sushi and any choice of a special roll. The sushi pieces have HUGE pieces of fish on them. First and foremost...I'm allergic to seafood....so Sushi...not my thing. However, I love the fact that for those of us who can't have the fishy stuff they have a couple of faux rolls. When my partner and I are in Oxnard to visit family we always make it a habit to visit Yokozuna. She enjoys the super crunch roll with a side salad which has a nice sesame dressing. I like the Baja roll, it is slathered with a rich and creamy sauce so I'm always sure to order a side of rice with it. We always leave satisfied. read more

They get 5 stars because they have a roll called The Mas Chingón roll! Hahahaha! Actually, it's pretty good! I've only been to this place twice but it has very fresh sushi. Price and serving size is average, and that's not a bad thing at all. This place features courteous and prompt service, although the waitress was a tad bit scatter-brain. Very nice & sweet lady though. Visually, it's a nice spot, worthy of considering it to take a date to. Too bad they don't have any type of all-you-can-eat specials, that's my only knock on the place. Until yesterday, I had never had a bad meal at Yokozuna. Sadly, yesterday changed my mind. There was a sushi chef that I didn't recognize on duty. He seemed very angry about something because he had a scowl on his face. When we got the rolls we ordered the avocado in the rolls was very clearly bad. It was not only brown, it had black spots. Of course we pointed it out to the waiter who took it back to be remade. He showed the sushi chef and told him it was bad and looked brown and the sushi chef argued with him and started glaring at our table. He remade our rolls, but when they came out, one of them had no avocado at all, the other was not made correctly and looked like he had poured either ranch dressing or creamy Italian dressing on it. Shortly after leaving we both felt sick. Very very disappointing because this was my go to sushi place. I won't be returning though because it seems like the quality is no longer there. read more

That 1 star is inflated. On a 1 to 10 scale, a 2 is being generous. I sat at the bar and ordered simple things first. The customer next to me asked (in Spanish) for another roll and got it in two minutes. Customer came in and asked (in Spanish)for a togo order and received it in a few minutes. My simple sushi eventually came 5 minutes later. RIGHT! GOT IT!!! Looked fresh; however, I was not impressed with the taste. I'm only giving 2 stars since the food was decent. Overall experience was awful the waitresses we had was rude and walked away from our table while someone in our party was deciding on a drink, when she returned she only brought 1 of the 3 drinks that were ordered. After switching waitresses we ordered and waited about 45 minutes for our food to arrive. They need a wait staff that wants to be there and they should have at least 2 people making sushi during a dinner rush! read more

Yokozuna has a very loyal customer base--the service and the food have always been excellent. The staff knows its return customers and delighted in serving favorite dishes before you could ask for them, not to mention coming up with all sorts of clever inventive combinations. Recently, Charlie, the head sushi chef, left as the restaurant was sold. The new chef started out like a house on fire--the combinations were as good as one gets in Japan or at the really pricey joints in New York and Beverly Hills. But the loyal customers loyal to Charlie and the way things WERE done started badmouthing the restaurant--which is a real problem. Because word of mouth may be more important when one is eating raw fish than for nearly any other kind of restaurant. Charlie and the rest of the staff were wonderful. I was prepared to have to find a new place. But this new version of Yokozuna serves the best sushi around. Hope more people give it a chance. They do need a better person at the front desk, but certainly everyone behind the sushi counter is GREAT. When they get the service as good as the food, I can easily give the fifth star. read more

Give this place a 5 star. Food is by far the best ive tried in any sushi restaurant. First time here, got invited by a group of friends on a Thursday night and by far best experience ever. We let our waitress korinna? Pick our appetizers and rolls and I couldn't be any happier with her choices!! To begin with, she brought us rainbow oysters? accompanied with some garlic and spicy edamame. Placed in order through DoorDash today and I called to confirm they received my order correctly. (Reminder to not leave sauces out) Upon my call I spoke to a lady with an accent who was very rude and should not be working in customer service or she should go back to training. She seemed stressed and frustrated I felt like I had bothered her for asking to confirm my order,she was having trouble understanding my request. However, she clearly had no patience and passed the phone to a gentleman who seemed to be in a rush and once again I felt like I had bothered him for asking to confirm my order. Ordered a Philadelphia roll(had very little cream cheese), Rainbow roll(salmon was definitely old),and Jalapeño poppers(tasted like old tuna) they ALL had NO flavor!!
