I only come here for the burger. It is juicy, flavorful and excellent. I always get the double cheese one. Good eating. I always come here for lunch on Saturday when it is not crowded. Service is good and they have a nice drink and beer selection. In the heart of Hinsdale (well, to me, it is located in Hinsdale. I don't care what you say!). Also, it is located by Graue Mill and Museum. (Nice area to take a walk after downing that burger and beer!). If you are lucky, you may see a former (what a shame) coach of one of Chicago's professional sport teams there, enjoying a cold one. read more

Came in at 10:15 pm for my first visit with husband and 2 adult children after the Bulls game. Was greeted coldly by female bartender who said we had 15 minutes, when the posted hours said open until 11. Then proceeded to ask one of us for 2 forms of id. Bartenders have bad attitudes and don't take care of customers at the bar in a expeditious manner. My experience has shown that they ignore you unless you're with a group of people. Worse than you think. These places usually rate 3 stars, that is the norm, and in some instance they attain to a 4. No chance here, the wait staff seem entitled and there is sniff of absolute indifference. The ice tea had foam, just like a root beer would, and so that makes you super nervous. The chicken wings were pretty decent, and the grilled cheese as not done very good, but the fries were decent. There are lots of choices in pubfoodland, go somewhere else because this place is a disappointment. For a man of your age and of your lack of wisdom ,,, if your customer did not enjoy their martini because the olive juice was heavy handed and the server stated they would remove from the bill ... then be the better person and value service. I rounded down to two stars. First, the parking lot was slammed with no spaces yet there were still open seats indoors. The food was wonderful but the service was poor. There was also 15 minute gap where no one was able to order drinks while we ate because our waitress disappeared. We were handed an unfolded pizza box and left to assemble ourselves. Just left the tavern. Ordered a cheeseburger with bacon medium rare. It came out with cold cheese, overdone, and no bacon. My husband ordered the egg and pepper with a sausage link on it. They charged him for the whole egg and pepper and extra for the sausage but there two measly slices of pepper and very little egg. The cook was obviously not at his best so maybe it's best not to eat there on a Friday night or when they are busy. The server never checked with us until it was time to give us the bill. We used to eat there quite often and I also took my out of town guests there frequently. It will not be on our list of places to eat anymore. That and it's sister restaurant Roberto's in Elmhurst. Look...you go to York Tavern to suck down beers, BS with your friends and watch some sports on TV. Food is offered to keep you from passing out from all the beers you sucked down while BS'ing with your friends and watching sports on TV. You can't actually hear sports because its always packed with people who have sucked down a lot of beer and are talking loudly. When everyone yells enthusiastically, just follow suit and high five the dude next to you and you'll be fine. York Tavern is an iconic "cabin" destination next to Graue Mill with beautiful, smart, professional bartenderesses. All are welcome. Hinsdale investment bankers mix it up with average Joes, CEO's and local bozo's. You can walk in smelling like a hippo from the golf course and be welcome, served and fed. Adequate beer selection. If you are ever out in the Hinsdale/Oak Brook area- and you are looking for a simple place (really simple!) to grab a burger and a beer-this is it. Located on York Road by the historic Graue Mill (cir 1852)- this place is an institution as it is one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Illinois. Historians will tell you it opened in 1843 and I'd have to say that up until its recent renovation- it looked, felt and smelled like it inside!!! But that was part of its quirky charm. With only hamburgers and cheeseburgers on the menu, you didn't go there for haute cuisine. You went to congratulate a co-worker, or commiserate a firing or just to get away for a couple of minutes. You can't say you are going to the York Tavern without laughing apologetically and shrugging your shoulders. There just aren't other bars like this in this neighborhood of million dollar plus homes and trendy bars. That's the beauty of the York Tavern. Recently the York Tavern underwent a renovation with a complete rebuild to bring its kitchens and bathrooms up to code. It still looks the same from the outside- although on the inside- some of that quirky charm is gone. The burgers have also gotten a little fancier the prices a little higher, but it's still your basic beer and burger bar- although they have added a few more items to the menu. Stop by and have a cold one. And when you are done- wander over the creek to the Graue Mill to see one of the few functioning grist mills still left in the country. I sat in a chair by door without anyone asking me if I needed something. There were about 4 waitresses w working the room that day. The second time it was less busy- about 7 tables total with people but we still waited 15 min or so for someone to come. Nice local bar. Good place to grab a beer after work. Their salad was okay: large chunks of lettuce with tomato, cucumber, and olives with bottles dressing options. Onion rings were good. Chili was okay, nothing special. Now the pizza....delicious. I'm from NJ and this is the only thin crust in IL that is worth eating! Everywhere else is like a buttery cracker crust but this place has real dough. We had margarita pizza- 16 inch large is enough for four hangries. Really like this place for what it is , food is as expected and a good standard. Only real complaint is if a bar charges up to $15 for good sandwiches and fries and solid prices for pizza and many other salads and entrees , it feels wrong to be eating most things from plastic baskets with a plastic knife and fork and often have to ask for them too. Yes I know a lot can be eaten with your hands but typically at this price with coleslaw and other sides people get silverware . After a walk around the nearby pond at Graue Mill, a friend and I stopped in to York Tavern for a quick dinner. The room was full and bustling with golfers and families. The service was quick and helpful but not overly personable. I was surprised at the extent of the full menu. I had soup and salad and my friend had a burger. Both were very tasty. I also saw a pizza delivered to a nearby table that looked amazing. The renovations made the room look great. There is ample parking, close proximity to the walking trail and an easy pick up area for to go orders. I enjoyed my visit and would recommend York Tavern for a bite to eat or just a cocktail. The rest of the menu is typical, deep fried bar food for the most part - it has it's place. Try the chili. On the weekend, get a blue cheeze burger, a selection of appetizers, a cold Blue Moon...watch a ball game on TV, and, well... does it really get any better? A little (and I mean little) bar that's great for a very casual jeans and tee night out (make up optional). I came here with some friends after reading about this place and its historic 163 year old presence. My friends and I weren't dressed up, but we defo looked spiffy and the other bar patrons (all regulars) and staff certainly took note. Like we were fresh from Mars, we got an infinite number of stares, whispers, and hesitation from the bartender. Yes, we really do want a drink. I went with a little Shiner Bock in an ice cold mug. The bartender was was friendly once we were able to order but my beer tasted like a penny. Perhaps the beer lines were in need of a little cleaning, or maybe it was the mug... either way, the one beer was enough for my taste buds and I chose not to finish it. The place serves your typical bar grub and smells like the Friday nights of my youth when my parents would, without fail, take us to an all you can eat fish fry. I could tell this is a place my Ps would LOVE. The food is all nominally priced and even though I just ate, and am a vegetarian, their pulled pork looked and smelled pretty greasy good. I went here with my BF and my parents for dinner one night.We heard they had good food so decided to give it a try. A forbidden little secret that the whole damned world knows about. York Tavern tries to be this quaint little tavern in the woods serving fried food, burgers and beers on tap. But being so close to Hinsdale, the clientele try to act like they're slumming it by eating a greasy burger and washing it down with cold beer. Bar has a reasonably nice atmosphere, it tries to be small, dark and cozy. Problem is that it's too loud and crowded so it kind of ruins the effect. Plus they recently remodeled the place thus sanitizing the original "neighborhood bar" effect. The food itself isn't bad. Burgers are done well, salad is straight from the package so wasn't anything to go out of the way for. The calimari is done pretty well, no minor feat as it does take a bit of skill to do calimari right. Number of beers on tap and bottles, I had a Blue Moon which was fine. Waitress seemed a little brittle and impersonal. Not rude but not particularly personable either. Kind of a "eat your fucking food and get out" kind of attitude. The place does have it's good points, reasonably good food and cold beer. But there is something about the place that lacks ambiance. read more

York Tavern is a little hidey-hole of a place, tucked in off York Road, not far from downtown Hinsdale, but if you weren't looking for it you might not even notice it. It's a historic farmhouse, in business over 150 years and really cute inside. It's also small and the dining room is a bit cramped. The tables are close together and I had to ask the "Brasky buddy" type guy sitting behind me to scoot in so I could sit down. It's also sports-heavy -- makes sense, Coach Q (Joel Quenneville, the Blackhawks coach) lives nearby and I know that the Stanley Cup has made a few appearances here. The menu covers pizza, pasta, burgers, a few sandwiches and salads, and specials. It is mostly fried or carb-heavy stuff, but it's a bar, so hey. We started with mozzarella sticks, which were served in a basket with styrofoam plates - they were good, but pretty standard issue frozen stuff, nothing fancy. Husband had chicken fingers, I had fish and chips. The fries were also the standard frozen-to-fried stuff, not bad, but not fancy. He said his chicken fingers were very good, and my fish was tasty and hot although not quite as crispy as I might have liked. I love the history of the place and the cozy feel. And it's inexpensive, especially given the area you're in, million-dollar Oak Brook houses nearby and all. But I will say I was hoping for a bit fresher and more interesting food - hand-cut fries? Fancy mozzarella sticks? Real plates? I think I need to try the pizza; that seems to be their specialty. I'm guessing this is primarily a bar that just happens to serve dinner. So in that vein it serves its purpose well. But hey, maybe charge 25 or 50 cents more and get some better fries. This is Oak Brook/Hinsdale, I'm sure the locals can afford it. read more

Bar food, very simple, the service could have definitely been better BUT I must say the place was crowded. The little tavern that could....make a good pizza. Included in the pizza/beer package is a much needed oasis of grime; something natural for a bar, yet foreign in the prissy town of Oak Brook/Hinsdale. Honestly, I'm surprised this tavern hasn't undergone a face lift as collateral for setting up shop. I am familiar with the York Tavern as only a safe refuge for pizza. My options for pizza are limited on this side of town, and I know better than to sacrifice my good sense on mediocrity just to get some. Even if it weren't just steps away from my eight hour daily imprisonment, I'd still consider this my preferred choice for midday nourishment. My order of a small thin crust pizza with tomatoes and green peppers amounts to a manageable $14. While I cannot rave about the service, I also cannot rant. It's a bar, and I'm able to order a pizza that exceeds the tasty level of most others. Not much else is required. When picking up the pizza, I can put a face to the voice I'd heard on the phone, and they are just as pleasant and thankful for another customer to pack into the always crowded dining section. Let me wipe a tear away as I reminisce about the original York Tavern. It was smokey, they only offered hamburgers and cheeseburgers and they shut the grill down at 9:00 p.m. Crappy tables and wobbly chairs added to the charm of this place. They also had a kick ass juke box and old time cigarette machine. This is the place I learned how to drink. :-) Now it's not smokey, all spiffed up and they have an actual menu.
