Perhaps the most authentic Japanese restaurant that we have experienced since our trip to Japan. It's hard to explain what "authentic Japanese" is consider we only toured Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima regions of Japan. But the meals from this restaurant hit the palates of my wife and I in the right way to trigger the nostalgia of our Japan trips. We have been hitting various Japanese restaurants in Vegas, Reno and Sacramento. This place felt the most authentic. The restaurant appears to be ran by a Japanese couple. Very friendly service and timely served with our food. Very pleasant and we would not hestitate to revisit.

Fantastic, authentic Japanese cuisine in the Sacramento area. The cook takes serious pride in his work and it shows. The serving host was also very welcoming. The fish was excellent: large cuts that were fresh and very filling. Beautifully laid out on the plate in perfect proportions. The karage chicken was fried to perfection using nice cuts of the chicken. The food is excellent. I am glad I finally found a restaurant in the Sacramento area that has amazing Japanese food. Thank you!

We came to this place on a weekday for dinner. There were a few other tables. We reserved the Nabeyaki ahead of time. It was first to arrive. The sushi slowly came afterwards. The presentation was superb. Everything was delicious. They do have some disney plates and decorations. Service was a bit slow but we were already expecting this. The staff was nice and packaged our leftovers very neatly.

Fried Oysters

Food was excellent! The service was slow as many mom and pop restaurants are when there is a limited staff of cook, server and cashiers. Worth the wait as we were comped a few dishes. Rather small place so to get a table of 8 was difficult. Owner is Okinawan and friendly.

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Sac It's a mom and pop restaurant, so it's reservations only, unless you're lucky to drop in while there are enough empty tables. Call and leave a message for reservations but definitely don't drop in unless it's after 7 PM as they have many loyal customers who have found this hidden gem. The restaurant feels like you're in a comfy Japanese dining room and sushi bar at the same time. We are starting with some hot house sake - they let you pick out your own sake cups!! We were so hungry

Special Chirashi

I ordered the Special Chirashi and it was delicious! The presentation was unique for chirashi, however it was plated perfectly. There were many different types of sashimi with sushi rice and it was all arranged on a plate in a very decorative manner. Salad and Miso Soup were also included. Service was good. Reservations are recommended since there is limited seating and the food is good. This is one of the only few "real" Japanese restaurants in the Sacramento area.

As always, the food and service were great! It's good to make a reservation since it's a pretty small restaurant.

Best Chirashi bowl ever!!

Absolutely a surprise. We wanted to try out a new sushi place rather than the same old one that was recently purchased by Pan Pacific. Glad we did. Masa and Cami (please excuse my spelling) were wonderful. The food was exceptional. I think the picture says it all. And yes it tastes as good as it looks. Thank you for the fabulous experience we will be coming back. Oh and it kicks booty on that corporate place.

Chef special (right) and a roll I can't remember...

What a wonderful, family-owned business! The vibe is cozy and homey, with lots of wood and only a few dining tables (so reservations are appreciated!) We started with mixed tempura - soooo light and crisp and fresh! We then had the chef special roll and another roll I can't remember the name of but that had a super thin slice of lemon on it, which was absolutely delicious. We topped it off with chicken udon noodle soup and a chicken soba noodle soup, both of which had an umami, satisfying broth. Service was reasonably paced and very friendly. We even got some complimentary chocolates with our check! I'd definitely come back if in the area.

My co-worker recommended this restaurant a while back and I finally had a chance to check this place out. Like others have mentioned, this is a mom-and-pop place. It's not a big restaurant with a lot of seating, so I recommend calling for reservations ahead of time. My friend and I ordered the beef sukiyaki, which is basically a pot of hot broth with various ingredients such as tofu, carrots, noodles, etc. The meal also came with a side of rice. The food was tasty. The next time I'm back, I'd like to try the tempura (fried vegetable/shrimp) and tonkatsu (fried pork). The lady that took our orders and served us was really nice. Based on her facial expression and body language, I believe she was trying to figure out if we were Japanese. At the end of dinner, I switched from English to Japanese to surprise her. Overall: If you're looking for some good Japanese food, be sure to check this restaurant out. この店は美味しい日本食があるので、お勧めしますよ。入っている前に、予約したほうがいいと思います。是非、行ってみてください。

Although this is a small restaurant that does not focus on Ambience the Food and Service is amazing. When it comes to Sushi and Sashimi quality I don't think there is anything better in the local area.

I would have never thought a Japanese restaurant was here. The inside was another story! The inside is decorated with all kinds of Japanese pictures and decor. You definitely felt like you were in a Japanese restaurant. The menu was impressive! Everything had pictures which is so amazing! It was just easier having an idea of what to pick based on looking at the pictures. There were all kinds of sushi rolls, bento boxes, noodles, appetizers and plates. We decided to get the ramen, salmon katsu, and tempura bowl. Food came our really quick. Portions were good and everything we tasted wonderful. It definitely satisfied our craving. The tempura was crispy. The ramen broth was rich and noodles nice and chewy. The bento box came with gyoza, salad, tempura, oranges, miso soup and rice. Service was great. They were attentive, and friendly. Eating with our littles ones is never easy and we appreciated how patient they were with us. We loved the food and hope to come back and try their sushi next!

This is exactly what I had experienced when I paid a visit to "Akira Sushi" Located directly on Greenback Lane and adjacent to Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights, this place opened its doors for business back in mid-2024. Since then, they have seen a very respectable amount of positive reviews. As I had previously mentioned, the exterior isn't much to look at as this is a fairly dated strip mall that hasn't received any updates in decades. And to those that remember, this is the same building that "Pho 54" occupied from 2013-2023. During my visit which was the afternoon of Sunday 8/3/2025 at around 5:15pm, I parked directly outside as there were no other cars here. Upon entry, there was one other customer finishing dinner. After being greeted and seated, I was given a menu complete with a cold glass of iced water. I will say that the interior of this place is quite impressive, cozy, and inviting. The distressed wooden tables paired up with the tan-colored walls and unique murals add an upscale look to the overall interior. On a packed evening, this place can comfortably seat around 50 guests. I will say that their menu is fully loaded with pure deliciousness. They offer a huge variety of traditional sushi rolls, custom rolls, Bento boxes, seafood tacos (available in tuna or salmon), Poke bowls, and even ramen for the colder days/evenings. And even a nice variety of beverages including soda, beer, wine, and sake. Since I was dining solo, I decided on the "Sunomomo Salad" which was a cucumber salad w/Ponzu sauce and Bonito flakes. My main dish was their "Napa Valley" roll which uses shrimp tempura, cucumbers, avocado, spicy aioli, unagi sauce, and topped with sesame seeds. My salad was brought out in less than 3 minutes while my sushi arrived just a few minutes later. I will say that everything was very fresh and delicious. The avocado had perfect consistency while the shrimp was made to perfection. In my humble opinion, this was an absolute gem of a roll. All in all, "Akira Sushi" is about as good as it gets for quality sushi in Citrus Heights. They have very respectable hours of operation being open 6 days a week; Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm / 4:00-8:30pm with extended hours on Fri/Sat while being closed for business on Monday. Service was great as the young lady that waited on me was polite, courteous, and respectful. With a great atmosphere, delicious food, and reasonable prices, I am giving Akira Sushi a unanimous five-star rating.

Our server, Jaden, came over to the table right away to introduce himself, provide water, and ask if I wanted to get started with any drinks. I decided to wait for my friends to arrive, and while waiting, I took a look at the food and drink menu. Upon arrival of the two friends, we ordered cocktails first and then decided on food. I ordered the Pink Pony and later the cosmopolitan, and eggs benedict for breakfast. My meal was quite delicious and I finished every morsel on my plate. The poached eggs were done perfectly and I really enjoyed the potatos. We were seated in the interior dining room to the left of the entry and I did not check out the other interior areas of the restaurant, but I loved the Mid Century Modern / Palm Springs vibe. I especially loved the "fly fan" on each table to use because the bar behind where we were sitting was open to the outside. We did not have an issue with flies but the fans are a nice and considerate touch. Jaden provided excellent customer service, checking back as our drinks got low, and checking back on the food, which we all very much enjoyed. When we left there was some live music outside, but we did not stay as it was a pretty warm Sunday on 6/14/26, but I will most definitely return. I'm especially looking forward to returning in the evening when the weather gets a little cooler toward the end of summer. This is a really fun place, with great food and great service!

I had made a reservation for 2 people probably a little over a week prior to the date, for my birthday which was that evening-- upon arriving on time, & waiting a few minutes for the hostess (perfectly fine, I noticed there was an entire event taking place), myself and my guest were asked to take a seat at the picnic tables to wait to be seated, again, perfectly fine. That is until I watched the people behind us, and at least three other parties walk up and be seated immediately. I was very shocked to say the least, especially since nobody was checking in, asking us if we wanted drinks, letting us know updates. This was a reservation for a special event which I specified when making the reservation. We obviously left after waiting 20 minutes into my 7pm reservation, with no questions asked as we were :/ even with the event going on, the fact that I had made a reservation weeks prior & was never spoken to besides being told to "sit and wait", it wasn't busy enough to get that bad of service. I shouldn't be anymore, but I'm actually shocked by how unprofessional this entire experience has been handled. This town is entirely TOO tiny to be acting like an LA restaurant. Do better.

We came in on a Tuesday night and there was still a crowd, but we were seated within about 15 minutes. The prices have definitely gone up in the 10ish years I've been coming, so it's probably more a rare treat than an occasional visit. Everything was super fresh and came out quick enough. The serving size for some of the dishes have diminished, for example, the Musolino Pasta. Considering the base is upon noodles, I'm surprised they're putting less into that rather than their fish. The sushi rolls and sashimi dishes we picked still had a lot of fish pieces and very very fresh. Just that one big ding on a non-sushi based dish and of course the prices. Aside from that, I still love coming here and the Fair Oaks location is still near and dear to my heart.
