I do not usually post on Yelp. But I had to share a wonderful experience at Yui Marlu restaurant. My client took me to this restaurant last night. I ordered a chirashi--what a beautiful presentation. I wish I had taken a picture, but I did not plan to post on Yelp so, you must go there to see it. Chirashi is assorted sashimi with sushi rice. It very often comes with a lot of sushi rice. But, at Yui Marla, it was just enough sushi rice to enjoy assorted sashimi. It was delicious! I am from Japan, and I know Japanese food. I highly recommend this restaurant. A friend was in town and we decided on Japanese food. I yelped by rating and yui marlu was #1 and we now know why. Unassuming in Madison Village, the restaurant is modestly decorated. The food was great. We liked it all. We had a tempura mixed appetizer. It was good. We also had bbq albacore.....ah yum. Rolls: California Roll was great. The waitress said part of the secret is in the sushi rice. Best ever. Little Italy: my husband said was delicious with lots of fish. I had the teriyaki chicken. It was average. It has a runny sauce. I like it a bit thicker. Miso soup was above average and my friend said the wasabi "was the good kind". My husband had a Japanese beer, Orion. He is a fan of Japanese beer and he is already looking forward to his Orion. The waitress was friendly and tentative. Yiu marlou is in my way home.....oh no. I will be back for sure. read more

The best in all of Sacramento! I am fond of just sitting at the bar and asking the owner who is also the sushi chef to "just feed me" His fish is the freshest, the presentation creative and beautiful, and more gracious service can't be found. His adorable wife runs the beverage and table service. This is mom and pop sushi place that puts places like Mikuni at the bottom of my list since I found them. In a kinda funky location. My family and I were craving sushi and thought we'd call ahead to see the wait. The person I spoke to let us know there wasn't a wait currently, but a large party preordered food and the wait might be long to get the food. We got there and it was as they said the wait was a bit long, but they were super courteous and we knew what we were getting ourselves into. The sushi was SO fresh and good and honestly the service was amazing and they were so sweet and wonderful. I'm glad we stopped in and it was 100% worth the wait. I'm super excited I checked Yelp for a new nearby sushi spot. We are thrilled with Yui Marlu and will def be back! We did take out this time, but my husband said the restaurant is small and family-own/run. We'll definitely eat in sometime. The sushi was excellent. We loved the BBQ Albacore, which came with a great sauce. The salmon sashimi was arranged in rose and was delicious. All the fish was very fresh. Our favorite roll was probably the Cashew. This is THE hidden sushi lovers gem. I lived in Japan and this is how it should be done. The freshest fish and ingredients only . They have amazing presentations and the taste is off the charts. This is where a Nigiri lover should come to. If you like the taste of real sushi come here. I cannot stress enough you won't be disappointed. This place is more towards the traditional so you won't find tons of different rolls doused in different sauces here. I do not understand the high ratings. This was our second try, even though the first time the food was very disappointing. We had the same experience today. We ordered and my food arrived first. Garlic steak--a fatty round steak with gloppy sweet sauce on it. Then we waited and waited and had to finally ask where my husband's food was. Even the miso soup was ultra salty and not tasty. She took my drink orders and it took 10 mins to get 1 beer.. the place was not even full and there was another waiter there too, so there's no excuse. Nobody came around to fill up our water. She didn't come up to our table once to ask how everything was going, WE HAD TO WALK UP TO THE REGISTER TO PAY FOR OUR BILL AND EVEN THEN THAT TOOK a couple of minutes because they ran out of receipt paper. Food: 2/5 we where looking forward to the food because of the reviews and I was DISAPPOINTED. The food is okay but the fish was not fresh, maybe because it's Saturday??? We got 4 rolls and for the price they weren't worth it. Express sushi and teriyaki is way better! Pricing: $74 for our bill was not worth it. Our waitress asked us if we wanted a box because we left so much food behind. I HATE to waste good but we where scared we would get sick. Will NOT return. read more

This place has been recommended to me several times by coworkers and friends. It's been in my bookmarks for a while. Finally made the trek out here for a random middle of the week date with the hubs. I'm not sure how many people they have working here normally, but it seemed it was only the husband and wife duo and maybe a 3rd person in the kitchen? Service was really slow that day but I didn't mind as much. It gave me time to chat with my hubs. So for my first visit, I thought it would go big or go home. I ordered the Special Chirashi! Hubs got their ramen. I was totally blown away by this masterpiece!! Everything was so thoughtfully placed. Fresh cuts of sashimi and perfectly flavored sushi rice. Yum yum! It was definitely a treat for me. Hubs enjoyed his ramen too. The broth had good flavor and the noodles were good. Now if I want some good chirashi I know where to go! Yui Marlu serves da best sushi/sashimi in Sacramento. Yeah there are many sushi places that serve California/American rolled sushi with creams and sauces, but Yui Marlu pretty much sticks with the basics of varied fresh sashimi and nigiri sushi. The sashimi is tremendous. It is carefully selected so that it is the freshest and best quality pieces. It is carefully sliced and presented. Maguro, Chutoro, Toro, Hamachi, Hirame, mirugai, salmon, uni, ikura, and scallop are just a portion of what's available. With six of us, we started with some appetizers and then had omakase sashimi and nigiri sushi. Oooh wow, that was incredible. For omakase, ya pay a little more but ya get the sushi chef's (Masa's) selection of da best. We left it completely up to Masa but if you like you can specify some of your own favorites. I wasn't thinking cause I especially like uni and ikura and forgot to ask. But not to worry, Masa's choice of items was wonderful. We had lots of variety and it was all great. I highly recommend giving Yui Marlu a go and be sure to make reservations. read more

So last Friday, my wife had suggested going out to dinner and a massage for our evening outing. Considering the hectic work week we've both had, it didn't take much convincing to twist my arm. I immediately suggested Yui Marlu (been craving it!) and with no hesitation, we both trekked off and started our evening of R&R. I don't think I've ever been so excited to return to a restaurant as much as I was looking forward to this one. :D We got there a little before 8pm last Friday (massage appt. was at 9pm) and the place seemed a bit busy. I started getting a little nervous that we may not make it to our 9pm appt. in time. We were saddened to see that the Sushi bar was full and had to settle for a table which was actually fine with me since I really wanted to try other things off their menu. I was also surprised to see another Japanese lady working there but at the same time, glad that Kami is getting some kind of help. :) We ordered the broiled salmon kama again (YUMMY!) for starters. I think this dish is a definite keeper and this will probably be part of our usual order when we come here. I ordered one of their dinner combinations which consisted of the gyoza, saba shioyaki (broiled mackerel) and tempura (my choices). Everything was just delicious down to the Miso soup and salad. The tempura was very light and crispy and I absolutely loved the Saba. My wife ordered the Chirashi sashimi plate and the Orangevale (salmon, scallops, tobiko) roll. The Chirashi plate came out beautiful (uploading a pic btw)! Chef Masa's knife and presentation skills are amazing and more than anything, the freshness of the fish is unbelievable. Needles to say, It was another divine dining experience! MMMMmMMMmM SUSHIGASM! :::insert Homer Simpson gargling noises here::: This will probably be my last review of Yui Marlu for now since it's quite obvious how much I LOVE THIS PLACE but let me conclude you with this..... Coming from S.F./Bay Area, I've been spoiled w/ some really good Japanese food and Yui Marlu can go toe-to-toe with anyone of them when it comes to taste and freshness. Forget any of the negative reviews you read about this place about service being slow, etc. etc..... go eat fast food if you want quick fast service. THIS IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're planning on coming here, make sure you come with a little time and a little patience especially on the weekends. If you're a first-timer, I would probably recommend trying this out for the 1st time on a weekday when it's not quite as busy. Savor the delicious food and take a minute to get to know the staff. Yui Marlu is about as authentic as Japanese as you can get. We fell in love with this place, the food, the staff, and I guarantee that you will too. PS - Chef Masa came out from the bar and personally delivered our sushi order to our table and yes.....we made it with time to spare to our massage appointment. :) Thank you Masa and Kami for great service and AWESOME food! Delicious! Everything is delicious! Service is extraordinary!!! My friend saw this place on Yelp and had to try it, as we have tried a bunch of Japanese food in the Davis/Sac area (zentoro, mikuni, shoki, taro, raku, etc) My friend and I ordered the karaage, gyoza, eggplant, friend salmon skin hand rolls, california rolls, inari rolls, tekka maki, and more! I would definitely recommend trying the eggplant, as the flavors were so bold and delicious! The rolls were wrapped so well, and the sushi rice and everything about it tasted PERFECT. I love love love this place!! If it is your first time here, you must try the chirashi. Go all out and be completely blown away by how fresh and masterfully cut the sashimi is. I also enjoy having an attractive plate of sashimi to take picture of and show off with my friends haha. The garnish is pretty and the plating in general is definitely a work of art. Be warned: it does take a while for the chirashi to be made. The longest I've waited is approximately 20-25 minutes for dinner. Both my friend and I ordered chirashi and they brought it out together so I did not mind. It is just slightly more expensive than other locations but the taste and the service combined are too phenomenal to miss out on. The many times I come here, I consistently get chirashi because I crave it too much. However, recently, I ordered the deep fried trio (salmon, oyster, and shrimp) and Orangevale roll (scallop, salmon, and masago). I recommend both dishes, especially the roll! Most places are usually very generous with the sauce, which can overwhelm the flavor of the fish but this place douses the roll with just the right amount so you can still enjoy the raw fish in the roll. My friend got a salmon teriyaki and he let me try some of his food....damn that salmon though. Perfectly cooked to a tender and juicy taste. Salmon skin is crispy, not flaky and having no strong fishy smell. Teriyaki is given as a side so you can dip in however much you want. Shoutout to the generous and nice okasan for giving me miso soup and salad even though my order didn't have it! I'm so glad I was able to try this place before I move back to the Bay Area! This place was something else! It was refreshing to eat at an authentic Japanese sushi place compared to the many Korean-owned "Japanese" sushi restaurants popping up all around. I came in on a Tuesday night and it was packed! With only a few employees (2 servers & the sushi chef), the food took longer than most would prefer but the wait was so worth it! The fish was super fresh and melts in your mouth!! So, the sheen is gone. This place has finally quieted down enough that I don't have to call in beforehand to make sure the wait isn't too horrible and now it is what it should be, a hidden gem. I grew up in Carmichael when I was little and there's like this pocket population of Japanese people in the area that might surprise people but if you think about the original names of all the nurseries in the area it makes total sense. Yui Marlu reminds me of those little hole in the walls in Osaka near the outdoor marketplace (even though the owner and his wife are from Okinawa). The fare is great, and the owners actually care. This was supposed to be a neighborhood place and it's back to it's original form and I love it. The feeling I get from Yui is that Chef Masa was pretty good in Japan.... and in America where most of the kids cutting fish learned from non-Japanese roll makers, this place stands head and shoulders above the rest. Literally everything is good here. I come for the Ramen often esp during lunch because they make a super simple donkotsu ramen (pork bone soup stock) that tastes like something you'd get at home, if your family knew how to make it. Otherwise, you should go for their nigiri/sashimi plates if you're on a budget (20~$) or a omakase if you have 50$+ to spend. read more

Hole in the wall, small strip mall restaurant.. There's a sushi bar with a TV and several tables. I walked in and everybody was so welcoming.. Even the group of old Japanese ladies eating there were gesturing for me to have a seat at a table. I cringed a little to pay full price for sushi here but after eating.. It was so perfect that I couldn't be mad. The Tonkatsu lunch entree came with soup and salad ($9.25). The pork was moist on the inside and with a nice crisp outside with a squeeze bottle of Katsu sauce and rice on the side. Perfect. I tried the Orangevale roll ($10). Perfect size, not too much sauce, fresh ingredients.. Complimentary hot tea. It's such a small and busy place but, it's part of it's charm.. They're open for lunch, close, and reopen for dinner. read more

Nice small sized, not overcrowded, Japanese owned and operated, Japanese restaurant. We wanted a good Japanese authentic meal and we didn't have loads of time to wait - so we were worried about eating at a highly rated place on a Saturday night. Despite the high ratings on Yelp - luckily enough - Yui Marlu wasn't overcrowded at 7pm Saturday - so we went in without a reservation, greeted by waitresses from somewhere west of Tokyo (I forgot where exactly), and took our seat in this restaraunt that's laid out in a nice low-key atmosphere. As for the food... -Salad was nice and fresh -Miso soup was good - maybe could have had a bit more nori -Yakitori was EXCELLENT - chicken, negi, and nicely flavored tare sauce -Tempura was very nice - very crispy/cruncy and flaky- looked beautiful. -Sushi was good -Ramen was good as expected (kinda like "the usual"). All in all - this meal just hit the spot, the service was good, no waits and no problems - I'd certainly go back. read more

Delicious, tiny, blink-and-you-miss-it Japanese restaurant in a strip mall buried within likes of Jasper's Burgers, Godfather's pizza, and Adalberto's....but don't let that fool you. This place is fantastic! My fiancé and I went for dinner tonight and had the chirashi, tuna steak, and vegetable gyoza and they were all amazing. The fish was really melt-in-your-mouth fresh and tasty. I also really dug the vegetable (looked like edamame, ?taro, onion) gyoza as there are hardly ever any meatless gyoza options at restaurants and these were so good. There's much to be said about authentic sushi and Chef Masa and his wife can speak volumes. Tucked away in a small strip mall in Fair Oaks, I had to try the sushi for myself after seeing the rave reviews...not to mention that I was staying just a few miles away. Before even getting to the fish, the gigantic halved eggplant glazed with sweet miso came out piping hot and cross-hatched for easy scooping. A weighty appetizer and a great deal at ~$4. Next, the Mixed Nigiri was beautifully presented and conveyed so much more effort and passion than the vast majority of competitors. I was curious about the origins of the fish and the chef noted that he goes to the local market around 5:30 am every day to hand pick the freshest ones available. Dedication at its finest. I was particularly impressed by the sake and maguro and the dish as a whole was fantastic. My one small delta would be that the sushi rice was slightly dry and could've used a touch more flavor. The prices are very fair as well given the quality and the husband and wife team is one of the most hospitable I've had the pleasure to come across yet. I moved here from San Francisco 6 weeks ago and have been enormously disappointed with Sacramento's culinary scene until I tried this place. Wow! It is on par with San Francisco's best sushi bars. I have tried other sushi places around here because they received good reviews on Yelp, but they simply do not come anywhere close to this place. I love the ambiance, freshness and the presentation. It is a mom and pop owned and operated restaurant, and as soon as I stepped in it felt like I am in Japan. The freshness and the natural taste of the fish are self evident from the first bite. The atmosphere is relaxing to the point of being almost meditative, which allowed me to soak in the experience and my taste buds to have a field day. The server and the sushi chef were very friendly, courteous and attentive. Please be aware that there is only 1 sushi chef and if you come at a busy time, you may experience a slight delay - not much. There is even a sign that mentions that, which I thought was very thoughtful. It was not very busy when I arrived, and I got served very fast. By the time I left, I noticed that it started to pack up. I guess word got out that this is the best sushi place in Sacramento. read more

The best sushi place to go to in Sacramento and hands down the best I've ever had in California and I've been to a lot of places. Most sushi restaurants aren't even owned by Japanese people or have r Japanese chefs. This one does. It's authentic, consistent, and worth the time, wait, and money. They have a smaller menu which I love. There really is no need to have 30 different kinds of rolls. Their rolls are not overly sauced, which I appreciate. It's such an American thing to put gross sauce over everything to the max. Definitely try to go here as much as we can to support them. read more
