As far as Asian buffet food goes, Yukai is as good as you can find in the Hampton Roads area and they have earned 5-stars. I can't say that if they were a traditional sit-down Japanese restaurant that I would rate it the same, but for what one would expect and what you're paying for, the value is fantastic. To start, they always have plenty of seating and plenty of staffing. We have been to Yukai during both slow and busy times, and they are great at keeping drinks full and making sure you have everything you need! We really appreciate that even though it is a buffet, they still have a great level of table service. They are kind and quick and attentive. Regarding the food, they have a little of everything and it's a great place to bring the family. While it is leveled a Japanese buffet, they have a range of asian dishes, a Hibachi (aka Mongolian grill), and several American favorites. They do not charge extra for the crab legs, but if you overlap from lunch into dinner (where the price goes up slightly), it's on an honor system that you don't eat the "dinner fare". Dessert is included and there is a wide selection of which you can get many or few. As far as their Sushi goes, it's really great, especially for a buffet. They keep the fish cool, rotated, and fresh. I appreciate that they have rolls, nigiri, and sashimi (no rice) to choose from in addition to a few classic side dishes you'll find at Japanese restaurants (seaweed salad, cucumber salad, squid, miso soup). Let me first say the food was pretty decent. The Hibachi experience was great! Sushi bar was second and hot food bar last. (Some photos attached). One thing I noticed which was very upsetting was the treatment of some of the employees as well as lack of necessary tools and equipment for cooks at the grill and hibachi bar. Some of the cooks appeared to have bright red raw hands (from heat) as well as some workers with bandages on their hands (while working on the hot grills). It just didn't seem right. I mentioned it to one lady working at the cash register but she seemed to brush it off like that was a normal thing. Very upsetting to see the chain of hostess and servers versus the hard working cooks. They should treat the workers better and better equip them. Came here with a pretty large group of family and friends during our trip to VA Beach based on personal recommendations. The sushi, fish, dim sum, fruit, and desserts are of a higher quality and more flavorful than they have any right to be based on their affordable prices. Both adults and kids were happy with the offerings. The service was friendly, helpful, and also a notch or two better than other buffets tend to be. The place also looks quite nice inside. If you are here close to closing be prepared to not get your moneys worth at all. The staff will refuse to make more food, the habachi will refuse to cook, Also if you're a military family, if you want your discount then you need to have EVERYONE, including your 5 year old to have a military ID for you to get the discount. Some things got settled by talking with the manager, however you shouldn't have to ask for a manager over something as simple as getting what you paid for. TLDR: The food was good, despite being a heavy assortment with no light options. The staff felt unwelcoming, and annoyed to be there. The selection here is amazing. There is a ton of sushi, which my boyfriend enjoyed and I tried...not my thing. He said they were low quality, but good regardless. The actual buffet was full of really good food. I'd go down the line and grab nearly everything. My biggest issue was everything felt very...heavy. There wasn't really a good assortment of veggies, or sides to break it up. The dessert were the same, a lot of heavy cakes. I wish there was some ice cream, or fruit variety, again to break up the heaviness, but it was extra. My biggest disappointment is they are advertising their Boba Tea, which I was excited about, and it was prepackaged (which I didn't even know was a thing). It tasted awful and I drank maybe a third of it. I said I really didn't like, so they took it away. We we're still charged for it, $4. The waiter also seemed to have an attitude about it. Finally brought my five year old to try a buffet for the first time and we had a great experience. Don't let the outside appearance deceive you. This area of Hilltop is sketchy looking at best. The parking lot is full of janky busted cars and a few panhandlers. Definitely not giving very welcoming vibes at all. Walking in was quite a sight to behold for my kids with a little fish pond and lots of twinkly lights. My daughter said "oooh fancy!". And the best part of taking young kids out to dinner to a buffet of course is the food is already ready. Just walk in and eat it. My five year old was delighted at the cheese pizza and French fries along with some tried and true Chinese food staples like steamed rice, chicken on a stick, and sweet and sour chicken. She even tried the teriyaki salmon and said excitedly that it tasted like "home salmon". She loved every dessert she tried too. My husband found plenty to eat as well and I enjoyed the sushi. Is it the best Chinese food in town? The best sushi? No of course not but for $20 to walk right in and eat it was pretty great. Some items are overcooked and under seasoned for my preferences but that's what a buffet is to appeal to a wide range of people. It was a Monday night in summer and the place was busy enough that they ran out of forks. No complaints here because the food was fresh and chopsticks are more fun. The only nitpick I have is that the soda was terribly flat but water was fine for our group anyway. The place was clean and the service was friendly and attentive. And my kids were happy. I have found when they are very busy, the food is constantly being made so it's at it's freshest and the servers are a lot more attentive. Whereas when it's not as busy, the food has been sitting for longer and the servers spend more time hanging out on the side instead of making constant rounds. The price is good for the range of food: hibachi, seafood, sushi, dessert, to other Chinese food. If you are going to try it, I suggest going on a weekend when the restaurant has a steady movement of customers. First time to this place in a couple years, usually when I drive past there's always big groups of people waiting inside & outside, so they seem pretty busy. I decided on takeout and for a buffet, they do have quite a lot of options especially on the sushi side of things. Plus by the time I got home, it was still good! There's a nice variety of foods and some you probably wouldn't expect to be there. I will say that they are a little slow on restocking some of the foods when it's obvious it'll be gone soon. While I was waiting for something to be restocked, I was asked by at least 3 employees why I was standing in the middle of the buffet to be told "it's coming out now".
