After a grind session at grouse mountain hunger strikes me and my friend. So we deiced to take a wondering adventure along central Lonsdale ave to find the perfect healthier meal choice, even though my friend wanted MacDonald. We pass many places that seen open but empty (my number one rule: if the places it empty don't go eat there I eat by that rule) Having stop at a two Mediterranean places to get some bake goods, we finally came across a place call Yuko Maki Japanese Restaurant. From the outside the place seem really busy but not too busy that you cant get a table. Upon entering we find this place to be really big, they have even have a sushi bar. We were seated right away (I though there was a bit of a wait, but those people standing there where just ordering take out). the waitress brought us the menus and the tea right away. After having a look at the colourful yet simple menu, I order there special combination C and a side of Gomae special combination C: -California roll & spicy tuna roll -chicken Teriyahki & Udon The food arrive in a timely manner. The first thing I notice was the Gomae was really rich in peanut butter. Second: The chicken Teriyahki being on sprouts instead of rice.(healthy) Third: The Udon was in a soup broth that had little to almost no sodium,but still had a little bit a flavor still(less sodium the better, most places load there broth up with salt). The California & spicy tuna roll was very flavorful. Overall the food was very good here and the price was really a bang for your buck, there is service was very prompt(no wonder there so busy). so weather your looking for a place to eat after a good workout or just happen to be in the area this places is a must. I used to come here for years until I saw some disguisting stuff going down. I got there, stood and walked around for a few minutes and nobody sat me, so I grabbed a menu and sat down and ordered when they finally came. Food was decent considering it was definitely budget conscious. Loved the Salmon Sashimi as the portion was amazing!! huge slabs which I shared with my partner. Overall would go back( ( parking can be tricky so we parked in the back alley). Chinese runned and owened if that makes a different. Their sushi was relatively fresh, and their other food's quality was good. Also their prices were fair. But out of all of the sushi places with similar prices, I would say this place is definitely not one of my most favorite place to go to in the entire neighborhood for a good Japanese experience. Huge shrimp tempura!!! I only vomited once (for 7 hours) after eating here ... The gyoza was bad.. Anyway... For the most part, this restaurant is great if good service isn't important to you or keeping your food down each and every time you dine out.. Prices are good, you don't have tip properly due to the lack of humanity displayed by staff at this place, and if you do suffer from a severe vomiting episode and have to get rehydrated at Lion's Gate hospital, you'll lose a few pounds.. This is my local sushi joint. There are a handful of other ones within walking distance of my apartment too, but this is always the one I head to. Seriously, I'm probably here 1-2 times a week. I have never been disappointed. Super friendly staff, prompt service, super cheap prices (a major plus), and a big, comfy booths! And did I mention the food is good too? For similar quality at other establishments, you're paying about a third of the price more. I love Yuko Maki. I'll definitely miss it when I move away from the Lonsdale area next month! read more

YUCK AND UPSET COME TO MIND FOR SEVERAL REASONS! Main issue: GREASY Food served lukewarm to cold, server did not check back or refill empty tea cup, when complaint was heard at front - no response (other than, that's the way its supposed to be) and no apology = NO TIP! 1. Got a BOX - chicken was very little in meat, mostly chunks of fat and thick skin and it was cool to lukewarm in temperature mostly on one side (see below for same complaint). Lots of soggy brussel sprouts in 1 inch of water under the chicken. 2, Three gyoza - cool temperature but tasty - except when I nearly broke my tooth on a very hard piece of white bone (chicken?) the size of a dime 3. Three tempura - 1/3 of an inch of oil beneath them. Worst tempura ever eaten!! bit into them and gushed with oil! Tempura should be light and crispy not soggy with oil - warm though 4. Salad - some pale but crunchy iceberg leaves with a 1/4 wedge of orange and vinegary sauce. None of the usual veggies - cukes, carrot etc. Watery and vinegary - diluted taste 5. California Roll 6 pieces- decent taste and look, but very little rice. One of the pieces was very chewy bc the sushi paper was not soaked enough - nearly choked on that! $7.25 plus tax (cheap price but not worth the lukewarm cool plate of food high in liquids and grease. I would have paid $20 to get proper service and given a respectful response or any response and maybe even an apology from the male cashier/host. The way she served us was just like we owe her something! Firs of all she said why do u order just one meal for each person (non of your business!), second of all she asked for tip! tip me! we were about to consider an amount for her but they way she behaved just changed my mine! I told her it is optional to the customers, you cannot force people to give you a tip! it's not appropriate. I told her I am not satisfied the way you treat us!
