Where do I start. New ownership is terrible. Food has declined dramatically, as have portion sizes. They don't even use rice vinegar on their sushi rice, it's so bland. Too bad, before Covid this place was Top. Owners now rely on pick up orders as the place is always empty. If you're brave and eat here do not order the pumpkin croquettes. You'll get two croquettes cut into 4 pieces for $10. With the old ownership you would get 6 large pieces for that same price. Such a disappointment. read more

Incredibly cheap sushi near Ubc, this place is a must for students. It's right at Sasamat and 10th and easily accessible via the 99. The inside Isn't very nice, and the menu is paper and flimsy, but there are plenty of affordable and yummy options. I ordered the crispy California rolls ($10) which was a filling 8 pieces lightly covered in tempura. The wasabi was dry, but the rolls were very tasty. Friends got the $8 12 piece special which looked like a great bang for your buck. Would recommend this to any student, but I wouldn't go here for a nice date haha. More of a hidden gem, to get a quick bite to eat on your way back to campus. read more

Affordable food, nothing spectacular. So I wandered into this sushi place given that nothing in the area is opened after 3pm and I was starving (so strange). I ordered a box combo with the teriyaki chicken and rice, udon, and also tempera with a side order of the spicy scallop maki. Tempera was fried well but possibly with oil that was repeatedly used because it gave off a weird flavour. The udon was your regular udon from packaging. Teriyaki chicken was a bit bland. The spicy scallop could have been the best part. It was big and nicely wrapped with dry, crunchy seaweed. I probably will return to this place because of how affordable and easy it is to access near UBC, but I would not be coming back for the food quality. It really was mediocre. read more

Ever since I started working in the area I'd always hear about this place so I finally found some time to go. Apparently it's really popular with UBC students and based on their prices I can understand why. Considering it's location, it's impressive that they've managed to keep their prices on par with similar restaurants out in Burnaby or Coquitlam. Interior: From the outside you'd expect this place to be tiny and kind of rundown, but it's the complete opposite. Service: It's shocking how quick they are here. I ordered a Bento box and received it probably 5 minutes after ordering. Based on from what I saw with other tables they seem to get orders out really fast, no matter what you get. Not sure if that is concerning or not. Food: All my sushi reviews are usually about Chicken Bento boxes and I'd say this one is a tad below some of the other places I've reviewed. The one part that kind of threw me off was the imitation crab stick in the California roll. Bento box California Rolls tend to look low in quality no matter where you go and using a crab stick does not help. Fortunately the chicken was crispy, flavourful, and not very dry. The prices are really good here. It is a value for money place. Just don't expect high quality sushi here. The portion is quite big and you get a wide selection of rolls and bento. Service is almost non-existent and you need to ask them a few times to top up the hot tea. It is a good place for a fast and filling meal if you live in the neighborhood. read more

This place has super fast service. I usually order take out and it's always just the imitation crab meat California roll for my kids. I have never eaten here or tried their food. But last week I decided to eat in before picking up my kid from school. It was around 1 pm and wasn't very busy. I was seated right away, ordered a teriyaki chicken bento and within 5 minutes the food arrived ! FAST ! The bento include chicken on rice, green salad , slice of orange, California roll, and tempura plus a miso soup. The tempura batter was GROSS! It was RANCID ! I couldn't eat it. I'm sure the chef re used the same frying oil too many times. I picked at my salad . Did not eat the orange slice. It was most likely sitting in a bucket full of other pre sliced oranges for some time. The wasabi was disgusting looking as well. It looked like a child's plastercine! GROSS! ( insert pewky face) I only ate my California roll. I never send food back or complain to the wait staff. I just don't eat it AND I will NEVER come back. Me and my coworker were craving sushi and the closest one we found was sun sushi. The place seems small from the outside but inside of the restaurant there is a big space for groups. I ordered Gomae and chicken teriyaki box. All of that in a range of $11! My coworker order Special Sushi roll and a salmon roll. He said his dish was pretty solid for the price (also somewhere $12 for everything). The server was very polite and the food came to us in less than 5 minutes. I highly recommend this place if you are on the West Side of town near UBC. They accept both debit and Visa and of course cash. I'm only giving 2 stars because if you are looking for cheap eats this place is good for that. But I can only give 1 star for their "sushi". This is a place where people who never had real sushi would say good. It was a long time ago that I went in, but the tuna they used was NOT albacore tuna...it was white tuna. (Not actually tuna, deep sea fish) I don't know if they changed that since then, but the real sushi restaurant would never use white tuna. It's a very cheap alternative to albacore tuna. So if do not know the difference between white tuna and local albacore tuna, then you might actually think this place is alright....? But if you are hoping to eat good sushi, don't go there. If you want cheap bento combo type of stuff then it might be ok, but that is if you don't know what authentic Japanese foods taste like. This place is not Japanese owned nor cooked by Japanese chefs. read more

I keep switching between 3 and 4 stars but after having been here over 4 times already, I think the 4 star rating is quite deserving. The pros: - it's cheap ($5.95 20 PC special) - it's easy to get to with lots of parking The cons: - Every time I have been there they have piles of dirty dishes, metal trays of ingredients and other dirty cookware stacked up on the floor. You can see it and smell it from a bunch of the tables. Dirty. Gross. - the staff aren't very friendly at all, nor are they attentive. I usually have to go find my waitress to get water, tea or more water. - it smells like fish when you walk in. At a cleanly, quality sushi place you won't smell the fish. read more

Lots of seating inside with enough space to work. I wanted to use the table space to paste some articles in my zine pages. I had a veggie roll. Prices were cheap and the roll was made in a timely manner. It wasn't busy, therefore, they were super awesome about me spending a tiny bit of extra time in there. Two words: DIRT CHEAP. We (2 people) had the spicy sushi combo (tuna, scallop and dynamite - 17 pcs) and the red dragon roll - 8 pcs. We were STUFFED and the bill came to a whopping $20 (tax in - no tip yet). We were running errands in the area and got hungry - we found sun sushi and decided to give it a try (after looking up the yelp reviews, of course!) There was ample seating in the restaurant, no wait at all. The food came out lickity split! The portions were really generous. The red dragon roll felt like two dishes in one - that's how much salmon there was. There's definitely tastier restaurants in Vancouver, but for the price, you really can't beat this place if you are in the point grey area! Will be returning :) read more

Like a lot of other reviewers have said, you really can't go wrong with the sushi special; Miso soup, yam tempura roll, california roll, and tuna roll for $5.95! Basically the best deal on 10th around sassamat street. Obviously there are better sushi restaurants in Vancouver, but overall Sun Sushi is very consistent and they serve bigger rolls than most places at a very affordable price. The quality of the food and service is in accordance with the price. It's not bad if you just crave some sushi and if don't mind thin, flimsy, and insubstantial nigiri, overstuffed with rice. Also, the server also just "drops" the food on to your table, while passing. But I don't really mind that, and it's expected from most Chinese restaurants anyway. The place is clean, the food is delicious, although they could use more waiters. They are a bit understaffed and when it gets busy you have to wait a long time to place an order or get your bill. my favourite things to order here: 1. Nabeyaki Udon (on cold days) - $6.95 2. Chicken Yakisoba (on hot days) - $5.95 3. Dynamite roll (any day) - $3.00 Both the noodle dishes are big in portions, so you would never leave on an empty stomach. As far as value goes, this is the best sushi joint I've every come across in Vancouver. Their sushi special (6 pcs each of Yam, California and Tuna with Miso Soup) for $5.95 is pretty standard for the city. However, the quality of the sushi is top notch; generous helpings of fresh ingredients are all I ever want and this is where I come to get it. Also go for the Sashimi special if you want a good value on sashimi. Because I'm always on a low budget and a large apetite I rarely venture out of the special. But I do know that their house specialty rolls (e.g. the Dragon Roll) always impress me, though they do run $5-$8 for 8 large pieces. Atmosphere is reminiscent of a quick lunch joint in any major city - clean, big windows and simple decor. Service is almost always quick, just don't expect a very friendly server (they're too busy to go the extra mile, but who cares?) If you're traveling to Van on a budget and want to have a great sushi experience that will keep you coming back, this is the spot for you! read more

Sun Sushi offers good prices, but anyone who knows their sushi will be disappointed if they want something above average. West Point Grey isn't exactly full of sushi restaurants, so I'm not surprised by the 4 and 5 star ratings given by other reviewers. In Vancouver though, this restaurant is a solid 2 or 2.5 star because their focus is on price and not quality. Students are probably going to love this place for the price and the short distance from the campus. One good thing is the speed of service. It took them less than five minutes to get the order to my table. In terms of food quality, it's merely a notch above supermarket sushi. I've been here a few times for lunch and the quality has been consistently on the low end. The few times I've been here, I ordered one of their teriyaki lunch bento boxes and it came with some dark colored tempura which was clearly fried in oil that was past its useful life. The three thin pieces of nigiri sushi was nothing to write home about. The teriyaki? Another 'meh' rating from me. Far too salty and the quality of the meat was questionable. This is a decent lunch place but for dinner, I would opt for something better. read more

Love this place, close to home for me and very good prices! The sushi is fresh and really good. My personal favourite is the gyoza (best I've ever had.) Solid sushi that's quick, cheap, filling and satisfying! Sun Sushi is nothing to write home about (I've definitely had better sushi and better service, especially in Vancouver!) but this is a great place to go if you're just looking for a quick sushi fix on a budget. I've been here 4 times in the last 3 months and it's been solid food every time. Their bento boxes come super quickly around lunch time and I can never finish the whole thing. My personal recommendation? Nabeyaki Udon: Great for rainy days, surprisingly large portion! You'll leave full for sure. I'm sad to say that my opinion of Sun Sushi has slowly degraded over time. I recently ordered a miso soup (aka a very hard dish to mess up) and it was completely watered down. It had barely any flavour and nothing inside :( Also, their prices have been slowly but surely increasing recently and, with that said, I no longer consider it a great "bang for your buck" restaurant. Sun sushi is the best sushi for your money in the area. They're not particularly fancy, but they serve good sushi at a good price. I am very picky about my tuna sashimi, and compared to the other 5 or 6 sushi places in the surrounding few blocks, this place is the best. Vancouver has so many good sushi restaurants, unfortunately Sun Sushi is not one of them. I ordered their teriyaki chicken and all I got was chicken. Seriously, there was not a bowl of rice or miso to go with it. Considering that it was $9.95, you get more from other restaurants. The sushi isn't very good either. The quality of the tuna is not good. The service is also horrible and the waitress won't come ask you if you need more tea. I've given this restaurant a few tries but haven't seen an improvement. I doubt I'll ever return back to Sun Sushi after my last experience. read more
