It's been awhile since I have come back to this restaurant. No particular reason I just have eaten in Gainesville for a bit. I forgot how awesome this restaurant is. The service was excellent and attentive. BUT the management of this venue has made significant changes to the ingredients and recipes. For example the small mushrooms are no longer used in any items. I've been trying to support this restaurant since they came to Gainesville and were first located on Newberry Road next to the Waffle House. I will no longer give them any business. Food: Inconsistant. When it's good, it's very good. Very, very good. But it's a crap shoot if you have a good crew working. When it's not good it's (at best) mediocre and sometimes absolutely bad (and inedible). Salt content is all over the place... some nights overly salted, others you're grabbing the soy sauce to make it edible. Management: Horrid. Example... tonight, asked for tea. I had a party of 5, including a 4 year old. They charged the 4 year old $3 for hot tea (she had none). I asked why, since there is no price for tea anywhere on the menu, and they said it's the house rule. So, since I wanted hot tea, and including the 4 year old we were a party of 5, we were charged $14.95 for a single pot of tea. They would not remove her charge from the bill. You MUST give tips! My friend and I went to this place for lunch and it's not bad. During the checkout, my friend decided not to sign tips because the experience is not as good as the last time we came. However, a middle-aged lady came back to our table with receipt, and she pointed out the tips section and literally ASK us to sign the tips. My friend was so embarrassed but still signed 18% tips to her. I think this is so ridiculous that a server return with the receipt and ASK customers to sign tips with a angry face. I have very mixed feelings about Yummy House. I ultimately rate this restaurant a 4/5 because it is incredibly economical, and you get very generous portions for the price. The quality is hit or miss. The attached photos I provided include Wonton Soup, their Duck, and mixed Lo Mein. Their duck is absolutely incredible, and their wonton soup is great in quality. Their food generally tends to be a bit more authentic, and higher in quality. A friend of mine introduced me to this place who is Chinese American, and encouraged me to try their more authentic dishes. We've also tried their dim sum, which is incredible...although not pictured. I have also had some bad experiences where I've ordered their sweet and sour chicken, or more "Americanized" dishes and the quality was incredibly poor. Giving this restaurant a benefit of a doubt, I'd rate it a solid 4. I think if you try to order the more authentic dishes, you'll be fine. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and service here! We stopped by on a weekday right after they opened at 11am, were seated right away (but I heard that the weekends here is usually packed). Decor is lovely and traditional. Service was prompt and we got our food from the cart the waitress pushed around. Shrimp balls were juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside, the flavors were spot on. Chicken feet were a bit saltier than I normally like, a bit soggy but great flavors. Fried pork taro balls were my favorite, so delicious and fresh!! I can't recall a bad experience at Yummy House. The service has always been quick and the same goes for their online orders. Everything I've tried has been delicious, my favorite menu item being their salt and pepper calamari. They also have a pretty good lunch special for $9-$11 that comes with a well-sized entree and drink. From the lunch special I usually get the garlic fish. Being Chinese, I've definitely had my fair share of authentic and 'american' chinese food, so I am for sure a harder judge of this. My friend and I ordered the sizzling beef plate with black pepper sauce, honey bbq pork, orange chicken, and beef ho fun + white rice. Looooved the black pepper sauce beef so much, 10/10 recommend with a bowl of white rice. The beef ho fun was good, but definitely lacked some flavor. The honey BBQ pork was tender but didn't taste exactly like the authentic kind i'm used to, but would still recommend! And the orange chicken...literally orange flavor, so depending on your vibe, heads up that this is not the traditional orange chicken you'd get from your local chinese takeout--do not recommend. Sorry. Didn't get the hype! Heard good things about this place with many locations, and decided to try for lunch while in town. I arrived a bit after opening, so ALL tables were open. I found myself seated in the service area next to the beverage station, bus pans and rest rooms. (see photo). This set a lackluster tone for a lackluster meal. As this was my first visit, my waitress was NOT helpful in guiding me through the menu options and became somewhat agitated I didn't place my order straight away. To be fair, I wish I had focused on ordering the dim sum, as this appears to be their specialty. But their cart system and ordering was confusing + OVERWHELMING. It wasn't clear what pieces were AND their prices. Only one cart out of two stopped by. Instead, I opted for one of the lunch specials: "Shrimp With Mixed Vegetable" As described: JUMBO Shrimp Stirred Fried with Mixed vegetables in Wine Sauce. (See photo) Um, as you can see, the shrimp were NOT jumbo as described, the food looked like a dog's dinner and the sauce was bland. I focused on the vegetables (which were nice) and rice, but only ate half the meal. Then left. The Buddha delight was so full of extravagant veggies that I had never seen before,the seafood udon and the egg drop soup make the most interesting and delicious combo. By the time 11AM rolls around, there were already other individuals like me, waiting at the door. Once inside, we were quickly seated and the server came over immediately. I'm definitely a fan of their large selection of traditional dimsum dishes especially in Gainesville. A few items I tried was the shrimp dumping, sticky rice, the egg custards, custard buns, shu mai, chicken feet and fried shrimp balls. Based off of what item you order, the foodrunner will mark a stamp on your table ticket to indicate the pricing of each item. Everything we ordered came out to be about $30. As the only dimsum place in Gainesville Florida, I would say that this place is mediocre. The good things about this place are the fresh baos and buns, which are supplied by Sweet Buns next door. The dimsum was super expensive and super small in portion and size. As a college student, I came out hungry expecting to enjoy some savory authentic cuisine. However, I could tell that a lot of the food served was previously frozen. The prices ranged from 4 to 9 dollars per dish in the dimsum. Aside from dimsum, the lunch special is what is worth.
