Yummy House took over the suite where an Asian gastropub used to be located in the Convoy District. It's part of a small cul de sac of five businesses which means the shared parking lot has extremely limited capacity. The inside wasn't changed much from its predecessor, but the menu was completely revamped. The Roast Duck was the signature item on the menu. The duck needs to be ordered in advance so planning is required if you are going to dine here and want to eat that product. The rest of the offerings was Chinese fare ranging from cold dishes, vegetables, meats, seafood, noodles, rice and soup. For my meal, I selected the Green Chives Turnover and Black Pepper Steak. The first choice was four fried dumplings that were each cut in half. They were the largest dumplings I had seen in awhile with lots of flavorful minced filling. It was a good value for the price. The second choice was a dish consisting of stir fried cube steak that was served with a bed of white onions. The marinade on the meat was a bit salty, otherwise there was not much to remark about. For the food quality, price and service, I gave my dining experience at Yummy House a three star rating.

It was pretty dead inside considering it's on Convoy Street. There is additional parking at the back. There was a good amount of take out orders. Servers did their job. It was clean inside. It looked like it used to be a bar before. The scallion pancakes were good but the Seafood noodles were too salty for us! Location is good if you like going to Happy Lemon lol we went there afterwards for dessert!

It's been ages since I last visited this restaurant! A friend raved about their Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs (Guobaorou), so I came back with some friends. The portion of Guobaorou is generous, and it's truly delicious--crispy and flavorful. We also ordered Jellyfish with Vinegar Dressing. The jellyfish here is quite thick and chunky, not the smooth, silky kind I'm used to, so I wouldn't recommend it. Then there's the Braised Local Chicken in Iron Pot. The picture looked super tempting, so I specifically asked if it came with the steamed rolls (huajuan) shown in the photo. The waiter told me they only have steamed buns (mantou) instead. When it arrived, turns out they're machine-made frozen buns bought from the supermarket. This dish is a letdown, so I don't suggest it either. On the bright side, the Sizzling Pork Kidneys were pretty good! We also wanted to order Peking Duck, but it requires advance reservation--make sure to call ahead if you want to try it.

When we came in for lunch it was pretty empty. We came for the Peking duck, but was tempted to try other things. The Peking duck: 2 course meal. Comes with the duck sliced for you and soup made with the bones & some of the duck meat. The family liked it, although I thought it could've used a little more salt. But the Peking duck itself was amazing, one of the best I've had. The skin crispy, & the meat moist. The best part is they separate & remove most of the fat off. So you're left with just yummy meat & crispy skin. I enjoyed the very thin crepe-like/thin tortilla-like wrap. The Peking duck alone deserves a perfect 5 stars. Beef onion: the fam really enjoyed this one. The beef was very tender & the sauce was good. Sweet & sour pork: very unique texture. Like one of the reviewers said, the coating is like mochi like. Kind of sticks to your gums & teeth when hot. I liked the texture, but we didn't like the sauce. It was over caramelized and was sort of solid. It was like over cooked caramel and stuck to our teeth. Even solidified onto the plate. Yang zhou fried rice: bland and was missing the sausage. It was basically shrimp bland fried rice. Baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk: it was ok. It was very sweet, really heavy, & greasy. It's probably an acquired taste. Service was meh, they basically just dropped off the food then went on the phone on speaker to call for their medical stuff. No one came by to refill our waters or take away empty plates till the very end when we asked for more water & the check. Would I come back here again? Yes for sure for the Peking duck, I will definitely come back for that. But call ahead (an hour minimum), since they say you have to make reservations for them to prepare that.

We came here for the Peking Duck. They suggest you order in advance so we made a reservation and placed the order. The duck was delicious - served with the duck soup, pancakes, scallions, cucumber and sauce. My friends really, really enjoyed the meal. The skin was crispy, just the way they like it. I enjoyed the vegetable dishes. The noodles, pumpkin and eggplant were good. Some of the flavors were new to me because this place serves northern Chinese food. Note: They do have dishes we are more familiar with like honey walnut shrimp, sweet and our, etc. The restaurant is dark could use freshening up. The server took our order but didn't really check in with us to see how we were doing.

Ran into this place by accident. Was trying to get to another restaurant across the street but couldn't find parking. I knew it was a good sign when there were Chinese patrons inside speaking and eating at Chinese restaurant. Loved the pics of popular dishes on wall and made it easy to order. Restaurant was busy but food came out pretty fast and was delicious! I will definitely be bringing back family and friends to this spot!

Duck is good really soft and crispy but other dishes like the pork ribs is gamey chewy and the pork intestines are good but could use a lil bit time to be tender. Love the boneless chicken feet.

Their duck is always the best I can find in San Diego! And they're the only place that will also prepare a duck soup! Make sure to call an hour in advance if you are planning to get duck! Every other dish I've had is really good too! ^__^

All the dishes we ordered were pretty authentic and tasty, but rather more oily than we'd prefer. We came on a quiet Sunday afternoon around 3pm and one server was working. Service was decent. Restaurant is clean with soothing Chinese music playing in the background. Overall a decent restaurant to enjoy authentic Chinese food.

Fellow Northeasterners/Manchurians, this is a place for you! I grew up in Harbin and they have extremely authentic food from my area! Besides, they also have items not currently on the menu e.g. "Oil" green beans and smoked pork knuckles (similar to Schweinshaxe) and trotters, which are my soul and comfort food. It's my to-go place even before I moved to SD. The manager Andy is very nice as well :)

Excellent experience! We came for lunch on a Friday and ordered the orange chicken, beef noodle and the mixed veggie plate. The portions were large and the food was tasty. We will be back for sure.

It was okay. Got the beef chow mein and broccoli beef. It was fine. Not too good not too bad.

Solid Chinese restaurant with Peking duck and requires advanced notice. Sweet and sour pork was crispy and has slight mochi-like breading. Different but delicious. Always a reliable choice for Chinese food.

Do I need to order Peking duck in advance?

I would. I think the restaurant said 2h prep time but they are a one man shop right now so more advance notice will probably be much appreciated and save you some frustration

    Is this restaurant still open?

Yes, it's open. Was in the area so went to check. It's open as of 7/2/2022.

Is it the best roast duck in SD?

For me, yes! No other place I have seen in San Diego uses the thin wraps for Peking Duck. The only place comparable would be restaurants all the way up in LA.

Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has been on my Yelp Want To Go list ever since my brother and SIL told me…read morethat they really enjoyed a Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas and were told that a similar restaurant existed in San Diego. After their experience in Vegas, they tried Shan Xi themselves and glowingly talked about the delish food there. Today, 3/4s of my fam ate here and we definitely concurred with my brother and SIL's favorable assessment. 4.5 stars because their grub was amazing, but it could be more customer friendly where one of the staff checks to see if we need help ordering instead of ordering from the QR code menu. Shan Xi Magic Kitchen is located in the ultra competitive Convoy Asian District specifically on Convoy Street within the Convoy Village shopping center. The restaurant is next to our fave Asian drink place called Yun Tea, it's next to Olleh KBBQ, next door to Szechuan Chef, and a short walk to BB.Q Chicken. This is a popular strip mall, so it could be challenging for you to find parking. Parking is free for 90 minutes, but you'll have to pay after that time ends. Shan Xi is nice inside with gray brick on their walls, decorative lighting surrounded by rattan, Chinese dolls on a shelf, Chinese inspired figurine art on another wall, and a beautiful curio/screen containing Chinese knick knacks. Seating consists of tables/chairs and a long leather bench. Our servers were friendly, but to me having to order from a QR code is impersonal. I'd rather talk to a person, so that I can ask what they recommend. Plus, if diners aren't familiar with this type of cuisine, I'm sure they would have a bunch of questions. From Shan Xi Magic Kitchen's website, "Bringing the bold flavors of Northwest China to San Diego, Shan'xi Magic Kitchen serves authentic regional specialties. Our restaurants specialize in hand-pulled noodles, savory bread-based dishes, and traditional Chinese comfort food prepared with time-honored techniques." After being told that Shan Xi was similar to their positive dining experience at a different Chinese restaurant in Vegas, my brother and SIL tried Shan Xi and they were impressed by what they ate here and told us that we needed to eat here ourselves. Since my wife and I were off midweek, we invited our son to join us for lunch. We ordered the following dishes and feel free to mimick what we ordered: spicy cumin lamb burger, hand pulled noodle with cumin beef, beef magic fried rice, dry fried green beans, and a side of white rice. My brother and SIL love the lamb burger as a appetizer and we really thought it was tasty too. If you're not a spicy fan, this might not be for you, but the lamb was tender. The pita bread needed to be softer. Their hand pulled noodle with cumin beef was stellar, chewy, and delectable. Loved their beef magic fried rice and it ate really well by itself. The fried green beans were addicting, garlicky, and just yummy. I'm a fan Shan Ci and can't wait to try their other entrees. My brother and SIL were spot on with their positive reviews about Shan Xi Magic Kitchen. It was a blessing to have a spontaneous meet up with 3/4s of my fam and grub on some memorable Chinese food.

Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has Good Potential, But Missing Some of the "Magic". 徒有其表,未得其神…read more My wife and I came here tonight for a date night, and overall, I'd say Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has a lot of potential, but the food still feels like it is missing some of the finer touches that would make it truly memorable. First, some positives: the staff were very courteous, attentive, and eager to help. The restaurant was completely full when we arrived, and there was a party of 12 ahead of us, but the staff communicated the seating situation clearly. Despite the restaurant being packed, my wife and I were seated right away, which I appreciated. We ordered: * Two bowls of cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles * Stir-fried string beans * Shrimp fried rice The hand-pulled noodles had a good chew and satisfying texture, which is important. The cumin and spice were also prominent. However, my bowl had noticeably more grease sitting at the bottom than my wife's, and the flavor didn't really build as I ate. After the initial cumin and spice, it eventually became mostly just spicy rather than developing more layers of flavor. The shrimp fried rice was probably where I noticed the biggest difference. It seemed to use relatively fresh rice rather than day-old rice, which isn't inherently bad, but the grains didn't have that ideal 「粒粒分明」 texture you normally look for in good fried rice. The rice was more starchy and tended to clump together, and the overall flavor wasn't particularly 鮮 or savory. The stir-fried string beans were enjoyable, but I felt they were missing that strong 鍋氣 you get from proper high-heat wok cooking. They were cooked, but they didn't have that slightly charred, smoky, caramelized quality that makes stir-fried vegetables really stand out. One interesting observation: the clientele tonight was predominantly younger and English-speaking. That's obviously not a measure of food quality, but when I'm looking for particularly authentic Chinese food, I often notice that the restaurants packed with mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, or other Asian diners tend to have a certain extra level of authenticity behind the food. Shan Xi Magic Kitchen definitely looks and feels like an authentic Chinese restaurant, but some of the food tonight left me feeling 「形似神不似」or it has the appearance, but not quite the soul. And that's ultimately how I felt about this visit. Compared with what I remember from visiting over a year ago, I think the restaurant has a high ceiling, but it consistently misses a few of the right notes. The food isn't bad in fact, there are several things here that I genuinely enjoyed but it doesn't quite reach the level where I finish a dish thinking, "Wow, I need to come back specifically for this." They may have around 2,000 reviews, and I can understand why people enjoy the restaurant. But having had quite a bit of Chinese food in LA, I've personally had better versions of these dishes there. Overall: good service, good atmosphere, solid potential, and enjoyable food but the execution needs a little more refinement before it becomes truly memorable.

According to the restaurant's posted hours, they close at 10:00 PM. My family and I arrived around 9:15 PM, expecting that we still had enough time to order dinner. As soon as we walked in, the server immediately told us they were already closed. My mother politely pointed out that the posted closing time was 10:00 PM and simply asked if the kitchen happened to close earlier than the dining room. Instead of explaining the situation professionally, the server responded in a very rude tone: "Well, you guys can eat and order, but at 10:00 PM you need to be gone and out the door." Another employee then stepped in to back him up, making the interaction feel even more uncomfortable. I completely understand how the restaurant business works. I've been around the industry long enough to know that kitchens often stop taking orders before closing or that staff are trying to finish cleaning at the end of the night. If they had simply said, "We're sorry, but our kitchen is already closed," or even, "We can still serve you, but we're finishing up for the night," we would have completely understood. There was no reason to speak to us disrespectfully. What made this experience frustrating is that we never came in with an attitude or demanded special treatment. We were polite from the moment we walked through the door. We simply asked a reasonable question based on the restaurant's posted business hours, and instead of receiving a courteous explanation, we were met with unnecessary hostility. Customer service is just as important as the food. A welcoming attitude can make guests want to return, while a rude interaction can overshadow everything else. Unfortunately, this experience left such a negative impression that I won't be returning. I also would not feel comfortable bringing my family or recommending this restaurant to friends because everyone deserves to be treated with basic respect. I hope management takes this review as constructive feedback and reminds their staff that even when it's close to closing time, a little kindness and professionalism go a long way.

Service is always super fast and friendly. Little whole in the wall and place is pretty small so might have to wait a little. Its feels very homey, like your walking it your mom house for dinner. I always get my usually wonton noodle soup dry with the soup on the side because I never finish and can bring home. You have to get the Chinese donut, fried pork fat, and pickled papaya!!! Lemonade is delicious, juat the right amount of sweet and sour. There shaken beef has good flavor but a bit on the sweet side for me. Their soy sauce fried chicken was flavorful, crispy, tender and juicy.

TL;DR It's really good. Go here…read more -------------- I came here after a friend recommended it when I told them I was coming down to San Diego for a day trip during my spring break from school in Orange County. I was born and raised in LA, so I've had a lot of Chinese food growing up, and I wasn't expecting to be this surprised--but I really was. I ordered the black bean eggplant and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are what they're known for, but I have to start with the eggplant because it completely caught me off guard. It wasn't mushy at all--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and coated in sauce without losing its texture. Every bite had depth and balance, not just saltiness. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Really glad I came here and the next time I have a chance to come back down to SD I definitely will come back here and that's not negotiable for me

It was empty coming in around 5:30pm on a Friday, but it soon filled to capacity in the next hour. So coming into it, we thought we would choose between Menu A and Menu B. Afterwards, we thought it was AYCE on the menu of your choice + the side buffet where there are limited selections of sides and refrigerated drinks. We ordered orange chicken, Chinese style fish and something else. Again, this was on the thought that we could order more than one item on our selected menu. So imagine our surprise when the bill was nearly $100 for two people? It was a misunderstanding. However, the initial staff gentlemen was completely rude about it and ignored us as we sought to understand. Finally, a second female server came and heard our concerns regarding the false advertisement and unclear messaging. She was able to provide us the price we thought this was for based on Menu selection. All in all - I don't recommend the AYCE option. I think it would be important to make a distinction that AYCE clearly on the menu and at the front - AYCE means each individual selects ONE entree (which is a one small portion) and the AYCE component of the deal is ONLY for the side buffet.

The menu said the family meals were meant for parties of 8, but let me tell you. We ate until we were hurting and there was still a ton of leftovers. Those meals can easily serve a dozen people in my opinion which makes them even more of a great deal. If you've got a large party, this is a fantastic option to make sure everyone eats their fill. With that said, all the food was delicious. Hot and fresh from the kitchen, each dish with its own unique flavor and textures. We ran the gamut of flavors over our meal and it's hard to really point to one singular dish that was my favorite. After having almost 10 different dishes, I can confidently say that they will have something you will really enjoy. The restaurant itself is a bit no frills. But that's fine. They're putting their time in to food, not ambiance and I am totally down with that. Service is great. We were in a back corner, but we never felt ignored nor overly watched over. We were able to sit down and enjoy our meal at our own speed. My only 'gripe' with the restaurant is that the restroom is actually outside and shared with the other businesses in the complex. And that bathroom isn't the best maintained. I'm assuming that's up to the property management and not the restaurant (or other businesses) so I'm not dinging my review, but just keep that in mind. Might be best to try & hold it if you can. Ultimately, Golden Chopsticks really knocked it out of the park and caught me so off guard. I am so glad we came here on a bit of a whim. It was fantastic and I can't wait to go back.

The menu is so long it's almost overwhelming in the best way. The Walnut Honey Shrimp was addictive and my favorite dish! The shrimp was huge, fried perfectly, and the sauce was sweet. The beef rib noodle soup had a broth that tasted like it could heal your soul. The orange chicken was the perfect sweet and spicy protein! The house seafood chow mien was not good because the basil was overpowering and the noodles needed more sauce. They were too chewy and bland. The soup dumplings were the second best thing we ordered and they were a close second. The dumpling filling was literally bursting with flavor and made me forget everything wrong with my life. The pan fried bao buns had too much sesame for my taste personally, so I wasn't a fan. I'm letting all the bad stuff slide because of how delicious the honey walnut shrimp was 5/5 fasho
