Don't bring your gold here! Brought a gold ring here to have him knock back into place as one row of diamonds were bent. Knocked the row 70% or so back into place and then proceeded to shave off so much gold that the edges on my finger are not longer sharp and defined. The band is considerably thinner. Gold being around $3500 an ounce can create this level of dishonesty. He didn't ask if I wanted it polished. Just proceeded to shave off gold. Don't go here. read more

I've been going to George for the past 20 years for my jewelry repairs, polish, or even had customized items made from him. I found George thought Macy's, since they take all their repairs to him. He is very reasonable in price, no one charges that kind of money, likes to have a good conversation, he is old school and yes he loves his dogs and guns, as much as he loves working with jewelry and he is really great at what he does. His place might not look a 5 star office jewelry place, but working with jewelry it is an art and polishing jewelry creates a lot of dust. His tools are antique since he has been in businesses for over 50 years. George will tell you if something can be repaired or not. He will tell you if it is worth repairing your piece or not. And if you have any Rolex watches he will take them to the authorized Rolex repair dealers around the town. Last month I left my Rolex with him for repair and the watch came back in great condition. He custom made me a Jade pendant, pearl earrings, necklace and all it was set in14k white gold. He make me few Sterling silver pieces as well, a disk pendant and a charm. He mounded a pair of diamonds earrings from scratch. George doesn't have social media nor fancy machines to get the job done, his hands are his machine. Also Macy's and EB Horn in Downtown and other prestigious jewelry stores from Situate, Newton and Hingham take all repairs to George and they charge triple of the amount that George does. George is the perfect example of an artisan. Visiting his small shop in The Diamond Building transports me back to a time where quality, honesty, and skilled craftsmanship were the pillars of entrepreneurship. George is reliable, quick, and very skilled. Just this week alone I needed a ring sized and gold plated, another ring needed to be re-pronged, and I had white gold diamond studs that also needed gold plating. George took on each project quickly and expertly, returning my most prized possessions to me as they were when I first got them. George took the ring, examined it, repaired, and polished it within half an hour. He charged me $15 to put the ring back together and also polished a silver bracelet of mine for free (it has been in my jewelry box for a while and was looking a little dull). I went to George's shop to get my watch fixed. My watch was my graduation present to myself after college and I had been wearing it almost constantly since May. However, even with all the adjustable watch links out of the band the watch was still very loose on my wrist. And, after a Christmas party, it stopped working completely. My dad attempted to fix it by replacing the battery with several new ones, and it still didn't work. I brought it to George, who stopped what he was doing to take a look at the watch. While he examined the watch band, he told my partner and I stories about his dogs, cooking, and some hobbies. During the interim, he micro-adjusted the watch band, replaced the watch battery, and got the watch up and running again. I learned some more cooking tips, and got my watch repaired for a very modest price. George's customer service is friendly, reliable, and fast. From the moment you walk into his small shop, located on the 7th floor of the Jewelry and Diamond building just a block from Macy's, George will invite you in with the most welcoming and professional demeanor. I was referred to him by Macy's to have a couple of Bulova watch batteries replaced. He does much of the jewelry repairs for Macy's, so that speaks to George's skills. We had a wonderful chat about everything under the sun. George is a very interesting man and his level of service is what I imagine things were like in the old days when things were simpler and we were less interested in what else is happening away from us, as viewed through our phones. I got to watch the entire process an he was kind enough to walk me through everything he was doing. The two watches are ticking beautifully once again and he even polished the silver. I had high expectations for this place based on the exclusively five-star reviews. But I'm sorry to say that this was one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I've had in years. I had a ring and an earring that I needed fixed. The ring had gotten bent and a prong had come detached, and a small ring that held a dangling element in place had broken off of the earring. I took these items to George on my lunch break, expecting to be there 15 or 20 minutes based on previous reviews and the amount of work that needed to be done. To be fair, the actual work he did probably only took 20 minutes... yet I was in his store for *almost an hour and a half.* Why? Because he would do about 20 seconds of work and then stop to talk -- not so much with me, but at me. At first it was friendly, and I enjoy a good chat, but it quickly took a turn into lectures on everything from gun ownership to conspiracy theories (humans are apparently ape-alien hybrids, and China is poisoning our children with fentanyl to weaken America for a takeover). I don't mind people sharing their opinions with me, even if I don't hold the same opinions myself. However, when you are keeping me, your paying customer, away from my own work because you feel the need to rhapsodize on things that have zero relation to the work I'm paying you to do, that's a problem. Moreover, when another customer came in around the 60-minute mark, he stopped what he was doing with my items and tended to her for 10 minutes. The second issue with this visit was the work itself. George managed to fix my ring fairly quickly, although he also polished it without asking me, to the point where what had been intentionally darker elements of it are no longer dark, so it's lost a lot of its original character. However, he completely screwed up my earring. I brought the other earring from the set to show him how the broken one should be fixed; basically, a little ring had become detached from a square dangling element, and it needed to be resoldered. Yet despite looking at the intact earring multiple times, he somehow put it back together incorrectly. He kept complaining that he "couldn't get [the dangling element] to hang right." What was his solution? He bent my earring out of shape and affixed the broken ring so that the dangling square (well, more like an oval now) piece kinda-sorta dangles, but not the way it's supposed to. I admit, I should have looked more closely at the earrings when he handed them back to me. But I had been there almost 90 minutes and needed to rush back to work, so I just grabbed them and paid him. When I Iater took them out, looked at them closely, and I realized what he had done, I swore out loud. These had been my favorite earrings since college, and this guy had totally warped one of them. As a professional, he should have admitted if he didn't know how to fix it properly. I thought about going back to demand a refund, but I don't have unlimited time to spend there, and it was only $25 for both the ring and the earrings -- I'll just eat the cost and hope someone else can fix what he did. I'm glad that so many people have had good experiences here, but I will never let him near another piece of my jewelry. read more

YELPERS--GO HERE FOR RING ADJUSTMENTS, this is an undiscovered find for anyone needing real HONEST jewelry repair. I wanted a ring resized from 7 to 6 and was done while I waited in 45 minutes for $35 (normally he charges $25 direct, but I was sent there by another jeweler who said they couldn't do it with the sidestone rings). Go to him directly since all the major jewelers contract out to him anyways. HONESTY: I was really worried that my ring may be damaged, diamond exchanged, all those horror stories you'll see. He did it while I waited, let me go to the back and see how he did it all, showed me the serial number, and rhodium plated it for me. He even gave me back my platinum scrap (huge if you make a mistake and need it upsized). This guy is awesome and he also sells wedding bands too. I would have never considered going to an independent guy, but he is a straight-shooter. I haven't done my research, but his prices are probably lower than most. read more

Went to get a spring-pin replaced in a watch band. Ended up waiting quite a long time (25 min) as there appeared to be a particular item he was struggling to fix. He ended up not having the right size pin for my watch, so to his credit he didn't try to fit one that didn't quite work and he also recommended another shop for me to visit. A bit tricky to find (Unit 709 in the Diamond and Jewelery Building), but worth a visit if you're looking to fix a low or mid-tier item. read more

Great value! For $60, George replaced two watch batteries and adjusted links on 3 different watches. If I had gone elsewhere, like to Fossil, it would have been easily much much more. FYI...a bit challenging to find. It's located in the Diamond Exchange building next to DSW. You have to go to the 7th floor (I believe) using the elevator, turn left down the hall, then go through the first door on your right. I discovered George Chapman's jewelry repair workshop 4 years ago and it's been the best discovery yet. I had given a major jewerly store a precious-stone ring to size, and after a week of anxious waiting I was in confidence told that if I wanted, I could pick the ring up directly from the repair shop that they used. Straight to 387 Washington St, Floor 7 I went. (This shares the DSW building, only use the door on the left, not the main escalator doors)I was greeted by the nicest man, George. He took a look at another ring I had on and offered to clean and polish it, right on the spot! We chatted while I waited, and he told me that if I ever needed a jewelry cleaning or repair, to just go straight to him! And I have been ever since. At his shop, I have gotten: weak prongs on a ring repaired (he replaced them on the spot for me in no time. A broken gold chain he has welded (melded? not sure the correct term, sorry!). I had a tarnished Tiffany silver necklace, cleaned, polished, shined. My engagement ring is again "sparkly new" again after a quick (and I mean QUICK) polishing! no waiting around for weeks to pick it up from your jeweler!) He told me he if I ever lost an earring, he can make a broach out of the lone earring stone for example, or a pin, etc. If you have random jewelry that you can't wear, go to George! He can figure out how to transform it into something new and beautiful. He also sells random military things that he has in a glass cabinet . First, let me say that I have never left a Yelp review because I haven't really had service that made me feel compelled to write one. But after working with George, I feel compelled to leave a positive review. I had 2 necklaces I needed to be repaired quickly (2 clasps added and some kinks worked out). This is a super busy time for him because it's after the holidays but George simply says, "Just give me $25." SO affordable and reasonable and really great craftsmanship. He was so friendly and kind- a great guy and an extremely knowledgable and capable craftsman. Another jeweler came in to pick up some of George's clients' pieces and George gave the other jeweler clear instructions of what needed to be repaired. I believe two other reviewers left poor reviews, maybe because they didn't have the patience to chat with George (he's a chatty guy, I imagine because of his personality and also that it can be very quiet, isolating work). One review was about how he allegedly said that China is poisoning whatever with fentanyl for a takeover or whatever. However, I'm Chinese and he was extremely respectful toward me and even spoke some Mandarin. Bottom line, if you're "too busy" to have a respectful chat with a great jeweler while your pieces are fixed, then don't go here whatever (P.S. if you're genuinely too busy, then just be like "I'm gonna drop these off and pick them up later" because he'll want to chat in between repairs). However, if you want your pieces fixed by a true craftsman and a genuinely good guy then absolutely take them to George! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. About two years ago I brought my grandmother's ring here to have it sized up. From the minute I walked in I was hesitant because the place was a mess but decided that if I could stay while he did the work I would feel safe. As soon as he finished and handed me the ring I commented that the color of the "gold" that he put in to enlarge the band didn't match the rest of the gold and he said it would turn with time. Now I fully admit that I should have known that wasn't true, but at that point I really just wanted to get out (he got frustrated when I held my ground when he tried to make me pay more than he originally quoted). Well, two years later a crack formed where the original gold and the piece he added met. I brought it to a respectable jeweler in Harvard Square, and they told me after taking the piece out, that it was a random piece of metal and not gold that he had put in. This guy is a crook. You will not find a better place to bring your jewelry for repair or cleaning. I bought my girlfriend a pearl ring from Macy's, and after a few months the pearl had come loose and detached from the setting. I took it back to Macy's hoping they could fix it, but they mentioned all they do is send it off elsewhere for repair. They in turn gave me the info for Mr. Chapman. I went there thinking it would be a timely and costly fix, but in just 30 minutes, Mr. Chapman was able to identify the issue (the manufacturer had used the wrong stem which was too short for the hole drilled into the pearl), fix the problem (he replaced the stem with a screw like backing you find on an earring and added adhesive, so it will never be coming off), and he even steam cleaned it. It honestly looks better than it did when I first purchased. And all of that for just $20! You're crazy if you don't go here for your next repair/cleaning. Mr. Chapman was extremely nice, and allowed for great conversation while waiting. He even dropped what he was doing to work on the ring. He is located in the diamond building on Washington street (7th floor, go left from the elevators and you'll see his name on the door). He only takes cash, but if that's an issue there's plenty of ATM's close by. He is literally a jeweler's jeweler (department and jewelry stores send their repairs to him) so you know he creates quality work.
