Tamales dinner plate. Green chicken tamales. Mole and rice
Jeremías C.

Me and my wife went here for a Valentine's day lunch. Their tamales are delicious. When I ordered the dinner plate I wasn't expecting this. The tamales are very big and full of meat. They're wrapped in banana leaf and you can really taste it in the masa. The rice mole and beans added a really nice touch. I ended up buying some to take home. I refrigerated them and was eating them for a few days after. I planning going back soon.

Fantastic food and service. When we came they only had chicken in salsa verde left so we tried that. My husband got his with rice, mole, and beans. The tamale is much larger than those I've had at other restaurants and they are wrapped in banana leaf. The tamale was very flavorful. I tried my husband's mole and beans and I wish I had ordered it with my tamale too! So delicious. They have a tasty hot sauce as well. I ended up taking some tamales to go as well. I'm definitely going back!

The way I would go here and eat everyday if I could... this place is delicious. Even though we only tried one green mole tamale, it was so flavorful. The service is very fast and there is so much seating. Would definitely come back!

Was cruising Chicago and got word of a legit tamale spot. Yvolina's Tamales is just the place for you. Homemade tamales and all the trimmings. We didn't have a lot of time to sit and enjoy but I can promise you Yvolina's delivers on an outstanding meal that can easily serve 2 people. Mole was out of this world, and side dishes were perfectly seasoned. Great experience and highly recommend, give them a try, you won't be sorry!!

I'm a sucker for leaf-based steam cooking from the zhongzi I would often eat for breakfast on the street in Taiwan to the tamales that run out early in the morning from popular vendors in CDMX. So I was naturally excited to try a tamale specialist operating just to the east of the main restaurant drag in Pilsen. The vegetarian variety stuffed with beans was a satisfying meal in itself, served topped with a delicious rich mole that may not have been brewing for thousands of days but for my purposes more than held its own.

The best Puerto Rican tamales! I keep coming back for more! They're always at the south loop farmers market and I've been getting them for years. The tamales are huge, fresh and so tasty. The green and red pork are my favorites. They also have the best and spiciest salsas that you can buy by the jar. You must try, you won't regret! I've moved a little more north but I still come back for these tamales. They're just that good.

Having gone to the tamale festival in Pilsen, I have tried every major tamale restaurant in Chicago. Yvolina's is by far my favorite. There's no skimping on the filling. The tamales are huge and so good I stuffed myself silly. They sell out of popular ones by the end of the day, so don't wait until just before close. They close early at 6pm (5pm on Sundays), so leave work early. Only street parking so you might have to walk a bit. -Pilsen gets congested like every Chicago neighborhood. Worth any walking. Besides, you can walk off that huge plate of food when you return to your car.

The interior looks clean and vibrant. The person serving me was friendly and he put the meal together quickly. I had the steak tamale with red mole with rice and beans on the side. The tamale was very tasty and came wrapped in banana leaf. I will say it had a good amount of heat. I like spicy things but this was getting to my limit where I was tasting more heat than other flavors. I still enjoyed it. The steak was hard to find in the tamale, though. It must have been chopped really small and slow cooked because I couldn't really tell it was there. The rice and beans were fairly standard. The star was the tamale. I also tried their kale lemonade. I'm still drinking it and it is delicious. However it's getting warm from being out of the fridge for half hour. I wish it were colder when I first got it. I can't wait to try other flavors of their tamales next!

I love the quality of the food and the customer service. As a vegetarian, it's hard to find authentic tamales, and I really appreciate the options they offer. I was able to buy an entire meal for my family of four, who have varying dietary preferences, thanks to their recent deal where you get 5 tamales for $35! One tamale alone is filling, and Yvolina's Green Mole Sauce really enhances the flavor. I always visit when I'm on that side of town.

It tastes like someone's grandma is cooking the food!! You can taste the quality ingredients and love that went into the food. I've eaten many tamales and this is the best so far and there so big. The plate was filling.

I have been craving this tamale since I had it at the farmers market a few weeks ago. so I went to get one. and it did not disappoint. I was able to get my order taken right away. The staff was nice and super efficient. I wasn't going to eat in, but I did. It was a little hot in there, but it didn't really bother me. Cute little small space I do wish they had more of the menu at the time but I believe they change it every so often and I got what I wanted so I'm not complaining

Delicious tamales. Mole is fantastic!! Had one chicken tamale with green and red mole, and one steak tamale with green and red mole, perfect size and very tender and flavorful. Friendly service.

These are photos of the Tamales, the awards they have won, and the mole that they sell.

Does she use lard or crisco? Meaning, does she have vegetarian options?

that have vegan options

Does anyone know why they don't have almond mole to go anymore? I have gone in 3 times and they only had red or green. Love that almond mole!

I would guess because it's less popular than standard red or green mole--but I am 100% with you! The almond mole is the best mole of all time. They still sell it in jars though!

Is there non-spicy options for savory tamales (excluding the sweet ones)?

Hello! ! I had a quinoa /lentils tamale today and it was delicious and not hot at all. The chili verde are very spicy. I think the chicken verde tamales are super spicy. Good luck!

Does anyone know if her tamales are gluten free or if there are gluten free options?

All of their tamales are gluten free, says so right on the menu!

For example with my mussels, rather than this large chunk of baguette, I wouldn't preferred it pre-sliced. We went on a busy Saturday night and it was popping in here for sure. However because it was so busy, my table ended up being neglected and our waitress was impossible to flag down. In terms of vibes, it seems like a pretty cool place to be. I liked the chairs and then the little booths seem like a fun time. I was also a big fan of the bathroom sink. Very unassuming, considering it's just your good ol' neighborhood butcher shop / market by day. Off the bat you can tell they carry clean, wholesome products. The shelves and fridges are stacked with the likes of fresh meat cuts, house-made sauces, cheese, jams, pickled goods... the list goes on. I can only imagine their deli sandwich are incredible. I'll have to return to order from their regular cafe next time I'm in town. The event however, wow very well done and the menu was stacked. Their sweet staff kept bringing out family-style dishes and I didn't have a single bite that wasn't delicious. From the butcher's steak to the mussels and everything in between. Oh and the night finished with some kind of apple/cranberry pot pie situation. Wow. Oh and plenty of wine and cocktail options here too! Like plentyyyy. Keeping this place on my radar for when I'm next in the city. Thanks for having us!

I'm currently on vacation in chicago and was exploring the Chicago French Market when I came across a big sign that said something about pastrami. It was a still a while before Clinton Street Smoked Meats opened, but the guy (I'm sad I never asked his name) was super helpful and just told me that the meat was already done and just to come back in a few minutes. So I did. I ordered a their half pastrami sandwich on rye with the potato salad. Oh my ever loving goodness! This was so good I actually started tearing up at the table. Since I got the first slice, they asked me if I wanted a fatty cut or lean cut of meat (I'm not sure if they ask everyone, so I just added this tidbit of information). I got a fatty cut of meat and added Dijon mustard. This meat was so soft and moist that it really didn't need anything else. It held together so well. The potato salad, I'm sure was made with some addictive substances because, holy cannoli, was this an amazing side to have. It stands up on its own but couple with the sandwich, was mind blowing. In the ingredients list, they add bits of the pastrami into the potato salad which was an amazing touch. I will absolutely need to come here again each time I'm in Chicago. Clinton Street Smoked Meats is where it's at!!

The tortillas are apparently handmade and fresh, but I was a bigger fan of the corn ones instead of the flour ones. Both still very good though! We also got the shrimp skewers, and it paired so well with the free chips and salsa they gave us. I'm not a huge fan of bell peppers, but they made them so flavorful and tasty here that I couldn't stop eating them. The service was great with the servers and busboys since they brought out the chips/salsa right away and made sure our waters and drinks were always full. The only flaw I have for the place was that we waited nearly 40 minutes even though we put our name and phone number down in the front. The host claims she called us but might of dialed the wrong number, so it was a little bit of a bummer to have to come back and check in when we could have been seated earlier. However, one of the managers stopped by our table to ask how our food was and packed up our food for us at the end. The ambiance was very packed and lively in there! There were so many people celebrating birthdays that they would have signs and cake and even sing to you for your special day. It's BYOB, so there was a lot of people making their own drinks. Additionally, I'd make sure you have cash since it's a cash only place. I definitely want to come back again and recommend it to others; however, you better be prepared for delicious food and an exciting environment!!

The chicken was not as good the shrimp but we wanted to try it. I recommend getting the shrimp as I feel like it's juicier naturally. This is the perfect size for making mohinga (Burmese catfish soup). They also have a fish service counter if you need them to cut it into smaller pieces. They have nice big sturdy plastic bags that can fit the whole fish. They have separate service counters for chicken, fish, and beef/pork which is helpful to reduce cross contamination. It's super cold so make sure you bring a down jacket and beanie! The service line sometimes takes a bit of time so just be aware of that. There are plenty of other meat offerings like whole chicken, pork, sausage, beef, etc. All of them look really fresh and very competitive pricing. There's also a grocery store section where you can buy fresh vegetables, spices, and even baked goods like paczkis. The Bavarian cream paczki was delicious and not too sweet. There's also bulk frozen foods like fries and jalapeno poppers (if I remember correctly). Finding a whole catfish in Chicago can be difficult and I'm glad I can always trust Peoria packing for my catfish needs. The whole 2 lb catfish was only $6, incredible deal! The parking lot is decently sized, on a busy day like Christmas or Thanksgiving you can drive further near where the trucks are parked and park along the fence. For special holiday hours they were responsive both through Instagram DM and phone calls to confirm their hours! Really great service. They recently moved to this new location in October 2025.
