I was in the area and had about 45 minutes to do something, decided to try this spot out. I'm beyond glad I did! It was a Tuesday, so they had a Taco Tuesday deal (3 for $15 TOTAL). Plus, (HUGE brownie points) they served a little bowl of chips & salsa, my favorite. Truly appreciated that. The other part I really liked is that I had a hard time choosing if I wanted Steak / Al Pastor / Chicken. So they offered me 1 of each, how nice! MIRNA took our order she was super nice and helpful and smiled the whole time I was thinking of my order. She helped me figure it out on what I wanted bc what I wanted wasn't on menu so she recommended I get two tacos with la salsa on the side. This is a great spot to get late night food...late night vegan food for sure! The plant-based chicken burrito I had hit the spot!

Chavas tacos has unbeatable steak (flour tortilla) quesadillas. They lay the 2 tortillas next to each other and fold them over to make the quesadillas. I don't think any where else really makes them like this but OMG do they absolutely smack with a little lime on top and the dark salsa (de arbol?) so good. The employees here are always sweet and helpful and they have a small back patio that I just discovered after years of eating in the front area. Chavas has been there for me on many a wayward night in my past always serving as a good choice when options for true late-night sustenance near Humboldt Park/Ukrainian Village dwindle down to just a few. So it was good to see that after so much time of not stumbling in that the place still holds up. Now I can't speak for all of their offerings but what I do know is that you can get decent steak and pastor tacos, sopes, and burritos at Chavas. Their salsas are a little thin but they have a good taste so I don't mind. There are a couple of bars with high chairs for eating inside but the place gets crowded quickly so you're probably better off just getting your food to go and inhaling it in your car. There's usually plenty of parking out front on Grand Ave but they also have a big parking lot if needed. The staff are quick and professional and friendly enough. They have a good system in place for keeping things moving along. Just make sure you keep an ear open for your order number. read more

Great late night delivery spot. Ordered 3 types of tacos all with onion and cilantro: steak, beef and chicken. Chicken was meh, texture questionable, needed seasoning...but solid portions. Also ordered a large side of beans (shockingly large) and rice. Both good, beans a little runny but solidified in the fridge for 3 more servings. This visit was on 7/13/2020. It was late and we were looking for a fast bite to eat.  The first restaurant that we went to was closed and the second restaurant that we went to was also closed. Then we remembered that el original used to be open 24 hours so we decided to give them a try. Yes! They were open! We ordered carne asada and chile relleno dinner plates.  Both come with rice,  beans, salad and tortillas. The chile relleno dinner is not on the menu,  but,  they will make it for you if you ask. We were finally able to satisfy our hunger. They opened a patio in the back but at the time of our visit, they did not have a bathroom available so that really was no point in dining n. My office had an old flyer and menu from when we ordered from them several years ago, and when we decided we wanted a Mexican buffet this past week for our team of 35 people, we decided to try them again. I ordered the fajitas package which came with chicken and steak fajitas which were cooked with sautéed vegetables, Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, tortillas, salsa and chips. They delivered right on time, at a very reasonable cost, and everything was excellent!! Really good guacamole and some of the best salsa I've ever had. I got the chorizo burrito with no frijoles. It was okay. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad either. It was just a burrito. This place is kind of pricey compared to other places I've been. Well, the tacos were really good my only talking point was she did not give me exactly what I wanted. Maybe it was because I was an African American. But I like cilantro and onions on my taco which is more the traditional Spanish way of eating them. I had the American way of tacos which is lettuce, tomato, and cheese. My wife is Spanish and when I gave her tacos to her she was not happy, it was because of her review that I even stopped here, that it was 4 am even more convenient. It was very busy so maybe the cashier did not hear me when she asked me did I want one or the other. The next time I will make sure she gets it right. The place was extremely busy for that time of the morning packed to the walls folks were rude and talking loudly not everyone was rude just a few folks. This time we ordered burritos instead of tacos, it just wasn't flavorful to me and the burrito wasn't put on the grill to harden the shell to keep it from opening. We come here every now and again simply because they're open when no one else is. What a great little 24 hr spot. This no frills, affordable for the city, Mexican joint was quite tasty. I really wanted tacos after my shift and found this place on yelp. Bonus points for being open 24/7 because....who wouldn't want tacos at 7:30am? Cute indoor area with limited seating. It's 24/7 for those w a penchant for late night drink, those w insomnia or just happen to work an off shift. All right yelp, I'll be real with you, I generally avoid soy. I'll spare you the nerdy details but in a nutshell that's what I do. However, once in a while as a mostly vegetarian, you crave a little something something. Chavas really delivers. I caved and had one of their soy chorizo tacos and it was well worth it. Warm, soft, delicious, flavorful, everything I'd hoped for. Also, their vegetarian chorizo substitute agrees with my stomach just fine (I've had it before on their nachos) whereas soy-based vegetarian meat substitutes from other more commercial places have been less harmonious with my digestive system.
