Unfortunately have to downgrade my rating after my last experience. The chicken wings are still bomb, but the service was very poor. The waitress dropped a chicken leg on the table and did not return with a new one. That's the least they could have done. We ventured out and took the sal sal chicken and the corn cheese this time. The portion of corn cheese was so little it was actually sad. And the sal sal chicken was mostly salad and definitely not worth its price. Will probably just take our wings from now on. read more

Really good Korean Fried Chicken! It's been on my to try list for a while but in the past years there's always been a line. This weekend... no line. We got a seat right away. I tried their original zabu chicken (whole). I wished they had the option to do half and half 'cause really, two persons can't finish two whole chickens and we really wanted to try more than just one flavour. Oh well, next time. We also got the beef tofu soup which was really good. I like their spice level. It's spicy but you can keep on eating without feeling you like throat is on fire. A few years ago I remember hanging out with some friends and we were eating this amazing chicken, which all I knew was from an Asian place. I was drunk so of course any food was good to me, but I remember having to refrain myself from eating more than my share..... Fast forward to recently, I got a take out order of the soy sticks. 5 drumsticks and an unexpected dish of pickled radish had me SO EXCITED. My first few bites were amazing..... the skin was crispy and cooked perfect, and although the flavour was minimal it was so satisfying. Craving for some Korean food, we went to Zabu chicken to try out some Korean style fried chicken. Would it possibly be the best fried chicken that I would ever have? We picked an original soy wings order. It took a while to arrive, given it was a weekday and the place wasn't that full. There were however, mosuitos flying all around, which worried me a bit. Finally, the 12 wings arrived. Medium sized wings, and it also came with a side cabbage salad. The wings were crispy on the outside, with a sweet tangy flavour, which reminds me of a mix between honey garlic and Thai chili. I liked the wings, but I've had better ones. I believe we paid around $1 per wing, which was quite expensive. Other items on the menu were also higher than normal: Seafood pancake for $18, bimbibap for $16? I don't think so. read more

So my friends and I actually wanted to go to Olé Chicken but it was full so we headed over to Zabu instead. We were lucky that a group was just leaving a spot in the outdoor enclosed area and we snagged up a table for four people. On a Friday night, this place must the pre-drink party place because there was a lot of rowdy people here, so much that someone even puked outside of the female washroom. Yuck. And it wasn't even that late - the night was just beginning! So keep in mind if you're looking for a chill place, this is not where you should go. In terms of service, it took a bit of effort to wave down someone's attention to order food - seems like people are in a daze here or something. Service here is mixed at best. I do understand that this place is pretty busy but if you are seating people outside there should be more of a conscious effort to serve us. This is especially true when you factor in all the prices. We ended up ordering a yogurt soju, a pitcher of Sapporo, the soy chicken and dukbokki. The drinks were pretty overpriced and the dukbokki was too chewy and in a pretty watery sauce. The soy chicken on the other hand was REALLY good. But again it was not cheap either. Being in a group the price shared by four people was about $20 with tax and tip so it was alright but the meal wasn't very filling. Overall, I think there's a lot of hype with Zabu. I've heard from Korean friends the mixed service from the establishment and the treatment of workers - and it clearly shows as the service from staff here is mixed as well. If it weren't others who wanted to go here, I'd probably not go to Zabu due to their inconsistency, but as a packed place on a Friday night I can't really argue with this model as something must be right... read more

KH and KC finally made our trip to Zabu Chicken after months of talking about fried chicken and beer. We headed over on a random weekday after work, and we were surprised that that it had a decent amount of diners. Zabu Chicken offers Korean fried chicken and beer, and most of their diners are Korean. By 7:00 pm, the place shut off their lights and had some night club music going on. Contrary to what many people had said about their poor service, I actually didn't find it a problem and the service was quite attentive. Food did take quite some time to come out, but since we had our drinks, it wasn't too much of a problem. After you place your order, you get some complimentary dishes. They served us Coleslaw as well as some Pickled Radish. At first, we thought the dishes were pretty underwhelming, but once you have some beer and chicken, you will appreciate it. The sourness of the pickled radish will help you cool down from the spicy chicken. With fried chicken, you have to get some beer. We ended up getting two pitchers of Sapporo for the night. Not the cheapest, but at $17, it was a reasonable price to share. I like how they provide you with beer mugs which have been put in the freezer so that your beer is kept cold. We decided to share a few dishes and started off with the Zabu Hot Combo. You can choose between medium and large size. We went with the medium, and you get a mix of wings and drumsticks. These were delicious! They are spicy, but a tolerable one and great with beer. The batter is so crispy! Something about it just tastes a lot different compared to American fried chicken. The sauce makes the chicken moist, but you still get the crispiness. The meat is also kept moist and tender. We also got their original Zabu Soy Combo, and we got this in large. These were also very delicious, and it had a nice sweet taste to it. A must order! It's funny because you can also order a whole chicken... When we asked the server about it, she said they literally chop up the whole chicken and fry it... Overall, we were extremely satisfied with Zabu Chicken. The fried chicken isn't the cheapest, but I've realized that fried chicken can be quite expensive. Here's what we ordered: - instant noodles - soft tofu soup - large chicken combo (soy sauce) - sullung tang - rabokki (ramen and rice cakes) We asked for the instant noodles and rice cakes to be mild but it was still a tad spicy. Surprisingly good K-chicken for Vancouver. While not the best (experienced in NYC), this poulet is pretty damn tasty. Somewhat still drunk, when handed the menu, all I saw was chicken so saved time by asking the server what were the #1 and #2 picks. Turns out those are Zabu Soy Original (whole chicken in soy garlic sauce) and Zabu Hot Sticks (spicy drumsticks). I started with the hot sticks. Great coating and crunch, not oily, juicy interior, decent kick sauce. I'm sold. Followed by the Soy Original. Bam, even better. Love the garlic/sweetness. Been here multiple times. Yes they have really good chicken. I mean good if you like sweet chicken. But also note if you are going to order, order the whole chicken. It is cheaper that way. As well, order their seafood pancake. This place can be quite busy but the good thing is that they are open late. Plus they have fruity sake. Pretty interesting. This is one of my favorite place to go in Vancouver. The spicy chicken wings isn't that spicy for me which I do eat the (spicy noodle, bul dak) for fun when I'm free at home. But the batter and everything is very good. The table can get packed in the evening around 5-8pm, try to avoid.. definitely would go again before going back to the US. read more

I've waited so long to get the chance to finally eat here. After finding the lineup at all the ramen places on Robson, my friends and I decided to eat here instead. We got our table immediately but we were forced to sit outside as the inside tables had a wait time of 20 mins. No biggie as there are heaters placed on the patio. We ordered the full zabu soy fried chicken and two bowls of tteok ramen. The ramen was good and it reminded me a lot of shin instant noodles as the spiciness was around that same level. There were rice cakes and an egg in the ramen as well. To be honest this wasn't the best ramen, it was more of an instant noodle flavour and wasn't anything special. The soy chicken was the best fried chicken i've ever had taste wise. The outer coating with their house sauce was so tasty and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Only issue is that I find that the pieces of the chicken were weirdly cut so the portion each person got wasn't the same. However the taste was amazing. Service was okay but only small inconvenience was that to pay with card you had to go inside to the counter. Came here on a Friday night and it was surprisingly not too busy and we were seated right away. We ordered the whole soy original chicken and a medium hot combo which was perfect for 2-3 people. We also ordered 2 yogurt soju cocktails and a pint of beer. The chicken was fried perfectly and it was soo goood. I really liked how the batter wasn't too thick and it was flavourful. Both the soy original and the hot were very good, but if you can't eat spicy the spicy might be too much. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was a good time. I didn't try the other korean dishes but they looked good, so I might get some of those next time. It was my first time here and I had a really good experience! I will definitely be back! read more

I am an absolute chicken FREAK and love everything to do with it ..especially when it's deep fried but I will admit that I put this place off for a long time before finally caving to try it. The reason why is because of the high prices and how small the amount of food was. After ordering I was actually pleasantly surprised at the portion that we got in the end. We shared a whole deep fried chicken that was half sweet chili cinnamon and half spicy. Knowing that it was a whole chicken it's obvious what you're going to get. A couple of wings, legs, thighs, breasts...so on and it was plenty enough for two people to share even on an empty stomach. This dish also came with a side of pallet cleansing pickled radishes and a small plate of cole slaw for $21.95, not a terrible price when spit between a couple people. The spicy chicken is actually very spicy but not overpowering. It has a delicious kick that made my eyes water a little but made my mouth water even more. The sweet chili cinnamon sauce was absolutely amazing to the both of us. Not spicy at all but tangy and sweet...the cinnamon is a perfect touch as we were both in fried chicken heaven! I have to say that the service isn't great..and the place can get crowded with really loud young kids that seem to think it's okay to clap their hands or snap or wave obnoxiously to flag down a waitress which might have something to do with it. Other than that the place is big and mostly clean but they did still have a few Halloween decorations up haha! I loved the chicken we tried and in the future it would be possible that we'd take out the same thing as a lot of people seem to do quite frequently. The food was good, but not everything for the chicken menu was available. We were left with no choice but to choose the regular wings. It was still good; crispy, flavorful, but I really wanted to try something else other than that. Also, it seemed that they don't cut the japchae noodles to an appropriate length; you try to take a little portion, but the whole thing goes up with the serving. Every Friday and Saturday (7pm-midnight), Zabu offers Jokbal for $1 if you order chicken (must be $20+) and a beer pitcher. It was a pretty good deal for four of us. Randomly walked in here as we were walking around Vancouver in search for food. We peeked in this restaurant and the vibe was very inviting -- the patrons seem to be enjoying their food and the place, so we thought, why not? Well, the food was just ok. I ordered so sal chicken, which by the description said it was breaded with rice crisp -- server said the photo does not match the actual dish, but the rice crisp intrigued me so I still ordered it. Seemed like just a regular breading to me. My husband ordered the hot combo (hot wings) and tofu soup. Their hot wings are really hot so if you're not into spicy food, don't get this. As far as service goes, I feel like they were understaffed. The restaurant was full when they seated us and the waitress sat us in the very back table next to a table full of glasses where other servers would pick up glasses from. It was so close to me that I feel like just one movement I'll knock it over. We waited for other patrons to leave to asked to be moved as I was just really uncomfortable there. Food was ok, they serve other things outside of chicken wings. The place was packed with younger crowd, maybe in their early to late 20s. Music blaring, line out the door, and quick turnaround service. The only downside, the server really aren't friendly, few may not even speak well English, but if you point out the picture menu you'll get what you ordered... hopefully! They try to make you feel rushed the moment you finished eating, and if you don't get to the point where you pull out your wallet, they'll make sure you do! Aside to that, I honestly think this place serves decent food, and they're surviving by their food and prime location. Absolutely BUMPIN' on a Wednesday night...if that isn't telling enough, I don't know what is. (Don't want to imagine what they're like on a Friday night.) For the price, you get MAJOR bang for your buck! We got a whole chicken's worth of fried chicken for a mere $21, most places would easily charge you $30 for the amount we got! Large, juicy, and expertly battered, the boy and I polished off the whole thing (and then some) between the two of us. We also order galbi, and a tofu soup, both were delish as well. Large portioned too. I will say I've had better elsewhere though...fried chicken is definitely their forte! When my friend and I arrived, the restaurant wasn't even that busy, but the waitresses chose to simply ignore us after we were seated - not bringing us water or coming to take our order after a significant amount of time. I remember looking around and trying to catch someone's attention, and noticing staff standing behind the counters just chatting with one another. We ordered the bibimbap, which was just standard, nothing to rave about, and also some Korean fried chicken. I was actually pretty disappointed with the chicken, mostly for its inconsistency. Some pieces didn't have enough sauce on them, and as a result seemed dry and underseasoned. Others, however, which were sauced enough were okay. The food is absolutely great. Especially the chicken with honey and cinnamon is amazing, but unfortunately the service is horrible. I've noticed that the severs do not treat the costumers equally and some of them are rude. Basically if you are not Korean chances are high that they tell you they ran out of chicken or other favorite items on their menu. I had to ask of three different severs for one item (FROM THEIR MENU) The first two refused to give us what we wanted and told me that they ran out. However, it was obvious that they were lying, until I asked the third waitress and she said that she would bring us the food. Unfairness and rudeness are not the only issues and you have to wait for the service a good amount of time. It is very sad because I really love the food. Great selection of chicken dishes. Ordered the chicken salad (sal-sal chicken) and was very pleased with the taste of the dressing. The deep fried chicken pop corn wasn't greasy and had the just right amount of seasoning. The spicy chicken stick is juicy! Place is pretty packed. Our group got there around 8:30pm on a Friday night and it was quite busy. We put our name down on the list, and waited about an hour before our table was ready. Between four people, we ordered 18 Zabu soy wings (x2), 12 Zabu hot wings, corn cheese, japchae, yogurt soju, chum churum (x2), and Sapporo pitcher (x3). The Zabu soy wings were amazing!! Super light and crispy, with just the right amount of soy and garlic. I would come back for these alone. However, the Zabu hot wings were another story. I can't really eat spicy food, but since someone else ordered them, I said YOLO and decided to try one. HUGE MISTAKE... it literally set my mouth on fire!! Luckily, the heat didn't linger for too long (and the yogurt soju really helped). Corn cheese was super disappointing. I thought they would at least broil the cheese a little so it'd be browned on top, but they literally just put mozzarella on top of the corn. The japchae, unfortunately, was nothing to phone home about either. That being said, I do have to give them props for the fun, "party" atmosphere. Since we went on a Friday night, the place was filled with happy, drunk people trying to get their drink on. It was fun playing Korean drinking games like Titanic (You place an empty shot glass in a pint of beer. Each person takes turns pouring soju into the shot glass, until it sinks into the beer. How do they stay in business? I ordered the zabu chicken sal sal, described on the menu as a healthier option because the chicken is fried in rice flour and it is "served with a salad." Um, "served with a salad" my ass--it IS a salad! The photo of the menu item is large chunks of boneless fried chicken sprinkled with sesame seeds and NO salad. What I *actually* got was a big bowl of shredded green onions and tiny little unrecognizable pieces of fried chicken scattered on top. I really wish I was more assertive and insisted upon a refund, because this was the biggest waste of $16 we have ever spent. Yes, you read that right--$16!! When I wanted to get the check, I called for our server (he was a man with wavy hair and glasses) 3x by saying "excuse me" when he was only about 10ft away. I raised my voice each subsequent time and it seemed he just hurriedly walked off and ignored/avoided me. Note - this was NOT during a busy time and the environment was not so loud that he couldn't hear me. When I went in to ask for the check, he was at the register. He said "ok" to my request, and I stayed standing there. He pretended as if I wasn't there and then I clarified that I wanted it here rather than wait for him to bring it outside, and then he finally printed it out for me. Other things that we saw were: several groups who got up from their tables and left because they were being completely ignored or they had to wait an excessively long time for their food, and people desperately trying to get one of the TWO employee's attention but ended up being avoided and ignored. Zabu, please take a class on Customer Service 101 and for goodness' sake, hire at least 1 or 2 more employees if you find yourself forgetting to bring out food and avoiding your own customers. read more

Pretty hard for me to give something one star, but when your food sucks and your staff is racist... well, that pretty much speaks for itself. It was late at night, my friend and I were very hungry. I'd eaten here before (but only takeout) and had mediocre experiences, but figured this time we'd eat in. That was when the racial discrimination occurred: we were waiting 10 minutes and were next in line for a table when the hostess picked a group that just arrived instead. This despite the fact that I was making eye contact with the hostess and made it clear that were next in line. At this point I was ready to leave, however, a guy who was part of another group behind us spoke to me. He told me he saw what happened, wasn't surprised because it happens all the time here, and that he would make sure that I got seated next. I thanked him and, because we were hungry, we decided to stay. Sure enough the hostess came and once again tried to ignore me; however, this time the guy behind me yelled at her in Chinese and pretty much forced her to seat us. I thanked the guy, and we sat down for our meal. Unfortunately things did not get better from here. Once we were seated, the service continued to suck and the food was pretty bad as well. The server took our order quickly, but I waited 20 minutes for some water. When we were finished our meal, nobody came to clear the plates and give us the bill. This place was a bit off-putting initially. Heard it was new and good, so we stroll in on a weekday night and the place is dead. Only a few tables were occupied and we ordered the 12 pieces of the original hot chicken... hmm... seems kinda pricey at ~$20. Sapporo on draft for ~$17 a pitcher. I notice a faint stench... I look around... the hell? There are like 3 or 4 uncleared tables. I know there's only one server, but the place look like it's been dead for hours... why can't she clean it up? I'm a bachelor... I'm used to random, uncleaned plates lying around... but when it starts stinking up, even I know I need to clean up... or leave the room like a biohazard zone. Have I found my soulmate? Standard banchan fare. Kinda of pricey. Quite a wait for the chicken. And I have already serious doubts about the cleanliness of this place. We're off to the wrong foot and this is not looking up. But the chicken won me over. Chicken was well cooked, crispy batter and a good deal of heat from the sauce. This is some solid chicken. And the pieces are huge. Good chicken at a decent value. The uncleaned tables were quickly bussed away and I was happily drinking my beer, eating delicious chicken and trying to understand what was happening in the KPop videos on TVs. For fuck's sake - with pitchers of beer, fried chicken and outdoor patio on Robson... I think I found my summer 'kick-it' spot. It's even open until 2AM (if I recall correctly). Random observation: There are tons of soju ads in the washroom room. It's kinda off-putting to do your business and sense the eyes of dozens of provocatively posed soju models on you... clutching your junk and looking at the posters made me feel like pervert and a piece of meat at the same time.
