The two stars here is really because their food was really good but man was the service horrible. I don't like to complain but this is one place I want to let others know not to expect good service at. I was here one Saturday night with some friends for their chicken. I've heard many great things about it. We were seated at the front of the restaurant right where the doorway was. Man, was it cold considering they left the door open for their own convenience of serving customers that were out in the patio. We noticed there was a lamp heater right at the doorway. We asked for it to be turned on and the server said it was broken. Half an hour later, this guy (I think he's the owner) moved the lamp heater out to the patio and turned it on. Seriously? We then asked for the door to be closed, they said they can't because they need to serve the customers out in the patio. Um... Ok... We then ask to be moved to another table that was a table away from the front door. They said it was reserved and the customer asked for that specific table. Those customers didn't even arrive until an hour later which we were close to finishing our night. When we ordered some alcohol, we were asked for ID but my boy friend recently renewed his license so he didn't have his picture ID with him. Therefore the server just said he can't have any and that she will only bring enough cups for the rest of us. We were like seriously.... After ordering our food, we noticed our utensils were dirty. So, we asked to have that exchanged. The servers did it but with some attitude. When we asked for the bill, the server came back and told us because our bill is over $100.00 they tacked on a 10% gratuity. What the heck? That made no sense to me considering we were only a table of 4. First off, with the service we got we didn't even want to give them the 10% and now it's tacked on. Ya, we were in no mood to bring it up to the manager or anything and was just forced to pay it. We really just wanted to go home after a long day. Overall, my experience here was just horrible. But I have to say their food was really good. The price of the food was worth it. Maybe next time I should just do like take out. Keep in mind that their chicken is on the pricier end. Nobody was on the patio on a nice hot Canada Day, so I asked if they were serving on the patio, the waitress replied that they were so I sat outside. It took two minutes for another waitress to bring me a menu and then she didn't return for at least 10 minutes, at which point I left and found another restaurant. I heard a lot of good things about Zabu so we decided to try them out. we entered and were seated pretty quickly. the atmosphere was okay. The music was a little loud but nothing to complain about. We looked at the menu and the chicken was pretty expensive so expectations were high. our waitress to our delight could not speak English. she did not understand what we wanted. We kept asking for sides and she kept saying medium and large. We tried to explain but didn't get anywhere. Our food arrived after 20 min. This is what we got: cold food, hair in 2 dishes, and the portions were tiny. So we spent over $200 and didn't even get a whole chicken. We asked to see the manager because of the hair in our foods. We were told before that their chicken was really good so we thought we'd give it a try. We got seated right away and ordered for their infamous chicken. I didn't just want to eat chicken so I asked the server if they have a rice bowl of some sort with pork or beef and she said, "yes, beef!" So, I asked if its like beef strips kinda like teriyaki style and she nodded so I said, ok I'll get one! Food arrived and I mixed my bowl. Guess what? It was a medium sized bowl with rice and literally a teaspoon or not even of ground beef mixed with veggies. ( it ended up to be the dish called bibimbap, don't get me wrong coz I had that dish a couple of times and it was good but keep in mind that I ordered for something else ) I was so hungry that I had a spoon or two but to my dismay, I stopped and asked the server why did she say beef strip when its all veggies mixed with a teaspoon of ground beef!? She took my spoon and mixed the bowl to check herself, in front of me, and took my bowl without saying a word! She took it to the counter and both her and the lady cashier were talking and looking at me. At this point by the way, our chicken was still nowhere. We stood up and asked both of them whats going on!? All of a sudden, their chef came out of the kitchen with one more teaspoon of ground beef and placed it on my then cold meal to hopefully make me feel better! LOL.. We were so shocked on how rude and unprofessional they were so right there and then, we just asked them to wrap the chicken to go and got the bill immediately. We played it safe and got the regular soy based chicken, the whole order. The suggested amount for two people. You can get a whole rotisserie chicken for under $8. So for over $20 we were expecting a lot more than they delivered. They also offer other selections at other prices, for different sizes and for different amounts. Where it gets fuzzy is there is no consistency in their classification of a portion. How are they determining the sizing? What is the difference between a medium or larger portion compared to 6, 12, or 18 pieces or 5 and 10? Asking the service staff did nothing for clarification. With all their hand gestures and the consultations with one another, nothing was made clearer. You are able to choose from a drum or wing, or a mix of both. No other fried chicken place allows the picking of parts at no extra cost. I liked how they called their all drum plates "Zabu sticks". Initially I thought they were bread sticks, by name alone. But it is sides you want, you have slim pickings. Your choices: pickles, steamed rice, a chicken or garden salad, and coleslaw. Clearly you come in for the fried chicken. As for the restaurant's environment, if you want authenticity you have it. Korean pop music playing over head, and Korean boy bands dancing on television screens, and Korean customers sitting and conversing in their native tongue. The servers communicate right back in the same fashion too. As for the chicken itself, I found nothing special in our bowl of mixed leg parts. The skin was crispy as promised, but the combinations of seasonings was nothing I haven't tried. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that I feel I did not come near to close to getting my money's worth. In fact we didn't leave any more satisfied or any less hungry. I had always wanted to try this place because of the hype. My friends and I ordered one plate of spicy chicken and one plate of regular. The chicken was pretty tasty... but that's not why I'm writing this review. It was 8 PM on a weekday, and this place was packed to the brim. So maybe 40-50 tables, give or take. There were 3 (!!!!) employees waiting all these tables. Absolutely no way service could be timely. I had also asked for some water (pretty simple request...) for the table, and after waiting 7 minutes, still no response. My friend asked about it again, and 5 minutes after that, still no response. I think after the 4th/5th iteration of my friend bugging the waiter about the water it finally came. All I wanted was some water... I also wanted to try their coleslaw because I'm a sucker for coleslaw. Again... I had to ask 4-5 times for my stupid coleslaw and it finally came after around 20 minutes... and that shit was terrible. I had two of my friends try it and they agreed it was totally bland, but also somewhat comparable to eating something like bad-tasting lettuce. The only redeeming quality was that although coleslaw is listed on their menu, apparently they're supposed to give it out for free (?) and thus I wasn't charged. All in all... hype is definitely not worth it. Chicken is pretty good...but service is absolutely atrocious to the point that it pretty much is not worth going to. I really enjoyed the chicken here. We ordered the hot chicken wings and drumsticks. When they say hot, they really are hot. None of that want-to-be spiciness you sometimes get at other places. I loved the combo of sweet, savoury and spicy in every bite. Not being a huge eater of heat, it was definitely tough, but with a bowl of rice, it was perfect. We also picked up a bibimbap which was decent. Kind of unusual that there is seaweed in it, but otherwise, a pretty normal bowl. For side dishes, you get a plate of cabbage (kind of like coleslaw) and some pickled daikon (which was way too vinegary). Service was kind of eh though. It was really slow and took forever to flag down someone and when we did, they would tell us that they'd come back only to not come back. This is particularly ridiculous because we were sitting right by the cash register! Continuing on my quest to find better wings than Tacofino I had a friend recommend this place. The soy wings are definitely on par with Tacofino as they are just as crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The hot wings were not very good as the sauce they used to generate the heat tasted very artificial. The beef short ribs were just ok. The beef miso soup was very good, especially on a wet stormy day outside. Summary. 5 stars for the soy wings. 2 stars for the hot wings. 3 stars for the short ribs. 4.5 stars for the soup. First and foremost, the service was mediocre. I ordered some chicken and a cheese ramen. The ramen came in a scolding hot mini wok WITH HANDLES on top of a stone plate. The server did NOT even bother telling me the whole wok INCLUDING the metal handles were boiling hot. The wok was tipping over slightly because they carelessly put the dish on the table. Regardless of the stone plate, the handles are there for a reason and this resulted in me trying to adjust the crooked wok and getting 2 fingers immediately burned. I informed the staff and told them their server should be telling their customers about the hot wok they serve the ramen in and instead of offering some bandaids (they must at least have a first aid kit right?) or maybe compensation for my meal, they just gave me a cup of ice and walked away. Not until I specifically asked for a bandaid did they give me one, and that took 30-40 minutes AND the restaurant was empty. This ruined the entire experience as the burns made my fingers bubble up and I couldn't eat comfortably. The staff should know the common practise of warning customers and shouldn't expect everyone to know how they serve their dishes. Regarding the food, the chicken was not bad but definitely overpriced for the portions they give you. I had to wait for another 30 minutes and there were no apologies whatsoever and the staff had made it out like it was my fault. My son has vowed that he doesn't want to return, simply because of the service. Oh, and delivery? Forget about it. Opened in the location of two previously Korean & Japanese eateries at the same location Zabu has only been opened a few weeks as this review is written. The West End is known for it's great abundance of very good Korean food and I was in the mood for bird so I checked it out. At first glance you can tell they just bought up the old (3 months old) establishment lock stock and ugly tree cutting tables surrounded by $15 red Ikea plastic chairs. I am sure you know the ones, and other ikea standards. Zabu does fried chicken plain and simple, wings or legs, Hot or Soy. I ordered the soy mix of what they said were wings and strips. But they were wings and legs. No problems for me as I love dark meat, but some may not. They say the are fresh and take some time to cook around 20 minutes they took 30 minutes. Ok so they are not frozen so they should cook faster right? The chicken is actually really, really good. Savory mixed with a little sweet is the main flavor and I must admit a nice change over typical buffalo hot wings. The order sizes are huge and should be a large is $18 bucks. regular $11 bucks. I will get some tasty bird from Zabu again, though I doubt I would eat in Zabu as there are not apps to dine on while waiting but they do sell beer. They do deliver so that is a good option or order ahead as not to suffer through the bad Korean pop music videos played very loud. Deep fried, battered in soy sauce, and then deep fried again. it makes the double down look like a feature recipe in Women's Health. Only eat this twice per year unless you are comfortable weighing 700 lbs. wash down with plenty of beer. My friend brought me here to try their chicken. They have a menu just for chicken: just wings or just drums or a mix, medium or large size, spicy, breaded or soy etc. Price is not cheapest, 20$ for a medium size (for 1-2 ppl) but it is quite tasty. I also tried a hot soup and their side dishes and quality was like the other Korean restaurants. Service was not the greatest; I asked for more side dishes and pointed at the dish and the server only brought me the one i pointed at but clearly the other dishes were empty as well. For Korean Fried Chicken it's great! they do the skin, texture, spices and the insides of the juicy chicken very well. Hands down. They japche was really balanced nothing overly salty or saucy it was just right , did not disappoint! The Cheese Corn on the other hand was kinda disappointing as the dish came Luke warm but the cheese was hard and difficult to scoop. Portion was very small too. Felt like they could have put more effort into this $14 dish. This is the only fault I can find. Been here several times. Always endured the awful music, decor, service, prices and wait times because I kept telling myself that the chicken here was worth all that crap. Yesterday, I decided it was not worth it. I convinced a couple of friends to go out for some chicken here. We go into the extremely dark room with a mix of Hallowe'en and Christmas decorations hanging from the walls and get a booth. We are promptly ignored for 15 minutes until I notice everyone else waving frantically for their server and then follow suit (I guess that's the norm here?). We have questions about one of the hot pots, which takes 3 different workers to answer. We order some fried rice dish, some soup dish, and a plate of the good ol' soy chicken - my fave. At this point I notice that they turn the lights down to barely visible (what is this, Dark Table?). The music is a terrible mix of blaring K-pop, EDM, trance, house, and... Christmas carols? Seriously, we heard Mariah singing All I Want for Christmas is You in between thuddy electro that was giving me a headache. Our drinks do not arrive. After 15 minutes we're presented with the typical sides of cabbage shreds with store-bought coleslaw dressing drizzled on and pickled mystery root (daikon? raddish?). Remind server about drinks. She says "ok", then I watch her go clean the table next to ours (the place is half empty, and there's already a server cleaning that table), go stand at the bar and talk with the other coworkers, then disappear in to the back. She returns with another table's food, seeming to have forgotten about our drinks. When our food finally arrives after a little over half an hour, I begin to realize that I should not have taken my friends here. Josh has a stone bowl filled with fried rice, meat, and a fried egg on top that tastes identical to my cooking back home (which I do for significantly less than $13). Next to him, Kai is choking down some sort of bland korean soup that looks and tastes like clay water. It literally tasted like nothing. The fried chicken arrived shortly after, and didn't have that "oomph" that I remembered it having. It was dry and almost seems like they barely put any sauce on it, and was closer to room temperature than fresh-from-the-fryer hot. And with that, we were ignored by the front of house team. No more check-ups - their job of carrying the food from kitchen to table had been fulfilled. We spent the time wondering if this place even had a management team or if the owner had just flown off to a vacation home somewhere, leaving behind these apathetic, pimply teens to run this place at its bare minimum. When we finally admitted defeat, we went to the bar to pay and got the hell out of there. Walking out on to Robson street felt like finally escaping from some rotting catacomb and feeling sunlight and cool air for the first time in ages. I guess I'm so frustrated because the chicken is normally so good that I constantly crave it, and every time I go to Zabu I am met with all these annoyances and frustrations and barriers to just getting my damn chicken. Considered just going with takeout, but judging by other reviewers here, they suck just as badly as take-out as they do dine-in. Oh well - they got enough of my money, and they can keep their chicken. I loved the moist chicken and very flavorful....this is not diet friendly food and sadly it was hard for me to just stop at 1 piece. I recommend a napkin for your greasy fingers. I'll make this review short and sweet..... The chicken wings are decent, comparable to BonChon in NYC. But $20 for 10 pieces is way too expensive for what you're getting. Decent food but way too expensive for what you're eating. My friend and I spend average $15 each for drinks and food and then left to another restaurant down the road because we were still hungry and didn't want to spend $10 for another half dozen wings that are extremely small. Needs a good spring cleaning and brightening up. The menu is a little all over the place, but I wanted to taste the fried chicken. Ordered the small order of the mixed spicy - three drumsticks and 6 wings. Have to say that the chicken itself is pretty good, its got a base of soy and sweet sauce/marinate and is sufficiently spicy to make it all kind of work. Wasn't too thrilled with the sides - cole slaw. All in all the lunch ran me $18 which is a little to steep for what it was. This place is money! Genius! Cute space - lipstick red chairs, tables hewn of great slabs of gnarled wood, pale in color and and highly laquered. TVs blare addictive pop - Japanese girl groups, Beyonce, etc. Loud, but not too loud. We did take-out two nights hand-running. A pint of Sapporo goes down nicely as you wait. Since orders are prepared when you order them, it can take a moment or two - in our case, 10 minutes the first night, and 20 minutes the second. Both times we just got the wings. Why wings two nights in a row? Because we could not NOT get them the second night! Not only are they worth the very slight wait, they are ADDICTIVE. The menu explains that the meat is steamed first, then breaded and crisped. Whatever they do, it is wonderful. The meat is perfectly cooked, not greasy, and a perfect foil for the slightly sweet, CRISPY, light and perfectly crunchy coating. Next time we plan to eat in, and get the entire chicken. The prices here are quite high especially when you consider what you're getting. If you all know of another place in Vancouver that does Korean fried chicken, please message me because $15 is definitely quite steep for a couple pieces of friend chicken. Food was regular. Price was high for small portions. My chap chae portion was small for that price on the menu. The part that I didn't like was that they never mentioned mandatory tipping on my bill before ordering. Tipping should always be based on the service that was provided and at the customer's satisfaction. 12% was added on my bill and I was only told at the end so that I was warned I didn't have to tip again just for incase I didn't see that it was added to the bill already. read more

Late night, it becomes almost like a club hang out with dozens of korean students. The chicken was decent. The Sapporo pitchers of beer were cold. The mixed soju cocktails were a pass. It seems like they diluted the soju a little too much, so you end up paying for expensive juice. They had a deal where if you bought a plate of chicken and a pitcher of beer, you paid a dollar more for another plate of sliced steamed pork trotter and edamame. Great deal. If you think Zabu is the best chicken in town, your are so mistaken. However, it's certainly not a bad place. Good atmosphere, mediocre service, OK chicken, etc. The chicken is not the best, but Zabu is located downtown which is really convenient. The drinks are SUPER expensive. Like way too overpriced. Serivce is OK. But since Zabu is always so busy I don't expect anything amazing. At Zabu, you pay more for the experience than the food. The best chicken I've had is at BoomBeer in Surrey, but yeah, it's in Surrey. I come here pretty often, and I really wish they would lower their prices on drinks.
