This barbershop is right down the street from my house and I finally popped in to give it a shot and I'm so glad I did... I've been having trouble finding a barber who will actually listen to my needs, and Zach was super attentive and not only asked the right questions but gave me the exact haircut I've been looking for unsuccessfully for a year. Really cool relaxed old-school barbershop vibes, Zack has a great story about his grandfather cutting there since 1955. Definitely get an appointment though because the word is out and walk-ins end up waiting around due to how in demand these guys are... Will definitely be back for Zach! read more

Great spot for local cuts. Very friendly staff owner and staff. Great prices! Only down sides for us was were it's CASH ONLY and we were made to wait for a long time with an appointment and was told "I'll be right with you," which wasn't the case. Other than that, everything else was good. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. read more

(Haircut 06/02/13 SU @ 10am): The earnest heir/hair apparent has been groomed to take over this magical kingdom of clippers, scissors, and shears! On this particular day, I found myself in the 1st Chair for the second time with Zach Lind @ Ernie's Barber Shop. It must be prefaced that my regular barber was Mark Kubitski who worked the 2nd Chair, but Zach has filled in nicely since his arrival a few years ago, each time in Mark's absence. In total, there were four chairs with local legend himself, Ernie, at the 3rd Chair, and Tom at the 4th Chair. And although these gentlemen are season barbers in relative age and experience, their youthfulness was like that "Twilight Zone" episode titled "Kick The Can". This traditional throwback barber shop has been around since 1955, founded and still looked over by Ernie Lind, and I dared say one of his crowning lifetime achievements, in addition to his lovely family, of course. Yes, in a couple years, Ernie's Barber Shop would celebrate its 60th anniversary as a pillar in the business community of this Jewel City. As the old-fashioned barber pole symbolized, haircuts, shampoos, and straight-edge razor shaves were on the menu of grooming one could had done. Although there were currently only men barbers (Yolanda was the lone female barber I remembered in recent years), each barber was skilled at cutting men, women, and children's hair. Now, please don't get this place confused with a salon or a stylist parlor, because it isn't. But if you needed a simple buzz, cut, fade, flat-top, or trim, this was the place to go. And for $17.00 (a couple bucks more for a flat-top), you got great conversation, two TVs (a huge widescreen in front of you and a standard one over the back entrance) to watch the latest sporting event (the French Open was on this day since Ernie was an avid tennis fan), and a slew of magazines to read. There was a nostalgic gumball machine for the kids...or the young at heart. If you came when it was cold, it was expected that the pot-belly stove would be warming-up the place. Yeah, each time I got "cleaned-up", I considered it hair therapy. As I got older (been a loyal customer for nearly thirty years!), I saw this place as a sort of "Cheers", but without the alcohol, and yes, everyone knew my name! Opened six days a week (closed on Saturday), each barber took appointments except on Sundays. Walk-ins were welcomed, but I didn't know Zach's day-off. Service - As with the barbers who came before him and the current crew, Zach's service is impeccable. Heck, he had a wonderful teacher and role model in his grandfather...Ernie himself! This apple may be a bit further extended out on that branch but he still came from the same soil and roots. He will do the 1st Chair proud! He was meticulous and offered a wealth of conversation like Mark. And once you looked in the mirror and still needed more off the top or sides, he was more than happy to continue. Parking - This can be a challenge since they didn't have their own lot. Rather, it's all street parking either directly in front of the shop on Chevy Chase Dr. (or all along this main thoroughfare), or any of the surrounding side streets. You're in luck, no metered parking...yet. I usually parked on Merrill Ave., the first street once you cut through the Canon Liquor and Glendale Adventist Hospital parking lot. Overall, Zach Lind @ Ernie's Barber Shop offered everything I've expected from him based on his lineage and this place. I'm a huge supporter of mom & pop businesses because of what they stood for such as the obvious pride of ownership and connection to a community for a story that had the ability to grown from generation to generation. In this particular case, I've seen the family story evolve which was heart-warming. I found absolute value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was $17 before tip), but the money and time spent was immeasurable. The atmosphere, décor, and ambience was pretty much covered earlier with the exception of the 8-or so bench-style cushiony seats where customers waited their turn as they faced the barbers' chairs and a wall-length mirror. The attire was totally casual so I'd be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. When I asked Zach, although he preferred cash or check as the others, he mentioned he had a mobile credit card reader if the situation warranted it, thus the potential of my card of choice accepted...AMEX! 4.5 stars read more

SORRY but I went there ONCE..... yeah ONCE ! nice guy, pleasant enough conversation but but when the barber completely ignores the style of cut you describe, doesn't ASK or confirm if he doesn't understand and just completely does what HE wants to do.... then I call HACK. my main beef is when a barber ignores you and cuts it way shorter than you ask because you CAN'T undo that !!! you can always cut less then take more off if not enough but when a barber BUTCHERS your head of hair and you are F**KED for the next few months re-growing it, I never return. read more

Before he chops me up, I always remind him that there's no way he can make me any uglier, but boy does he try his darnedest. It has been awhile since I had a straight razor shave but it's one of those guy-times you just have to make time for. I stopped in to get a hot towel shave in preparation to take the wife out for dinner. I accidentally picked a perfect time (mid-afternoon) and Zach was available. I've had other shaves from other barbers and this experience was well worth the time and experience ($25). I was very satisfied with Zach's skill and attention to the details (check-recheck). A couple of hot towels between the shaves provided a relaxing experience. The resulting shave was very clean and smooth. The after-shave balm left my skin smooth and not irritated. The only improvement could be warmer towels. I like scorching heat but maybe it's better I didn't get what I wished for. I was very satisfied and I'll be back for another shave. Next time, after another round of golf, I'll swing back for a shave. Just getting with the program and improving it read more

I've been here a few times, have had haircuts from three different barbers. I ask for a standard military fade with a couple inches on top and have only gotten one good haircut. The first barber "lined me up" on my forehead without asking. I'm not a hip hop fella, so was annoyed that it took three months for 8 hairs on my forehead to grow back out. Second barber (I think the owner) gave a good, standard military fade. Third barber jacked up my side burns, literal one inch height difference and left the top long on top at almost four inches when I asked to only have a couple left on top at the beginning of the haircut. I think the first and last guys were more interested in modern, LA trends then simple, old school military cuts. If I go to an old school barber, there is no excuse not to get this haircut in under 15 minutes. I'll be searching for a place with a nice older fella in his 50s or 60s for my next cut. read more

Ernie has been cutting my hair since 1964 (I was 5 years old). Zach has been cutting it for 3 years. He is an excellent barber and a very nice guy and I'm looking forward to being a loyal customer for 50 more years. Parking has improved with a couple of new spaces out front. If there is a Barbershop I would recommend its would be this one. Zach (Barber) knows how to cut hair and cuts it specifically how you would like your to be cut. I am picking when it comes to haircuts so when Zach cut my hair I was shocked because he cut it exactly how I wanted it. He also makes you feel at ease when he cuts hairs.
