This is such a great place for out of towners!towers!! My family and I came from Minnesota and wanted to bring the kids to the ocean for the first time and go in the water without freezing. Well we found the best place to rent wetsuits and boogieboards. This place basically had anything you need. We even got the kids some sand toys for playing at the beach. I went here about a week ago with my girlfriend. We are new to California and this is the first time we've rented bikes. Their employee, Ace, was awesome! We had a wonderful experience, and his laid-back casual attitude only made the experience better. I went back again by myself today while my girlfriend was at work. Ace recognized me immediately even though it had been nearly a week since we had been there. I rented a bike by myself this time, and again thoroughly enjoyed the experience. While I was biking around the bike got a flat tire. I had to walk about a quarter of a mile back to the store to switch bikes. Ace told me to remind him when I finally bring the bike back. I did and he gave me a substantial discount. I'm sure I'll be back again. Be sure to try the berry smoothies they're awesome!! read more

Though the guys renting us our bikes weren't the nicest people in the world (just way too chillax maybe), they had everything we needed! I mean, there are plenty of other bike rental places up and down Huntington State Beach (a little further down the pier toward the Santa Ana River), but my friend says this place has supposedly cheaper rentals? Some of the other places rented for maybe $15/hour, but this was $10/hour and we both rented beach cruisers (baskets are optional = yay for putting my purse in!). I loved it! This place also has food and surfing rentals, as well as those little carts that 2 or 4 people can pedal. The ride down towards the pier was quick and easy and even to the dog park just a little more further down. Awesome way to spend a summer day =) Just be mindful of the time you've spent out there on the bikes or else it might just be more worth it to pay for the whole day fee! =) read more

Finally! I've always wanted to rent a beach cruiser and go riding down the boardwalk! First we tried the tandem bike - this was a FAIL so we came back and just switched to a couple of beach cruisers. Baskets can be put on the bike to hold your stuff and theres little bells on them you can ring at people to get out of your way! You just fill out some quick paperwork and hand over your ID and they get the bike for you and you are on your merry way. You can rent by the hour or for a full day I believe. We rode all the way down to the end of the boardwalk and then back a bit and dragged the bikes out onto the sand and fell asleep under the beautiful California sun! We woke up and rode back to Zack's and dropped off the bikes and one of the guys there was so nice he gave us a little discount. Score! read more

I do not recommend surf lessons here. I am a strong swimmer and so is my daughter but they don't teach you they just push you into the waves and yell at you. You are very rushed and though Robert was nice it was stressful. We bought two lessons ( one for me and one for my daughter) it then is a group lesson. I wanted to learn how to surf but we were just pushed into the waves so I still don't know how. You get the board and suit for the day but instead of judging the roughness and telling us it wasn't a good day the guy selling them to us was just like you will have so much fun. When the hour was up I was pretty much scared to go out alone because he didn't teach me he just told me I would get in the impact zone. I understand nature is nature but we could have waited until the conditions were better. Whatever, I don't recommend. read more

My kids and I went to the NPPL Tournament this past weekend and Zack's had a burger stand out front we bought 3 burgers, fries, and a soda. Price it was around $10 a person a bit pricey but not bad considering I was at the beach slight up charge for that. The food was good you can't go to wrong with burgers. The older guy working the barbeque was a bit cantankerous and made the kids a bit nervous but after they were eating and sitting beach side they were cool. I rented a couple of bikes from Zack's Last week, one for me and the other for my 7 year old daughter. The children's bikes Zack's had available are all quite rusty, and in really bad shape, tires flat. The helmets available to chose from were in a large sandy bucket next to the bikes in the sand. Helmets filthy, cracked linings, and hard to fit. And they have balls to charge $10/hr for their bikes. I rented bikes the day before in Hermosa for brand new sparking bikes and helmets for $6 per hour at Hermosa Cyclery. read more

They surprisingly had a really great burger here. My brother and I rented surfboards from them, which were $35 each for the whole day (or $12/hr) and when we were hungry I got a burger from them as well. Nice guys, good gear...but just don't try anything out of their ordinary routine. I was planning a party for my wife, which was to include a bike ride on the beach for a group of 10. I stopped by a week in advance to make arrangements. "We have plenty of bikes, just give me an hour heads up," said the guy with cool confidence. So I showed up an hour before the party, paid in full for the 10 bikes (he gave me a 10% group discount- so far so good) and waited. When we hit the T-minus 5 minute mark, I walked up to the counter, just to confirm that all systems were go. It was a different guy at the counter, and he looked at me with puzzlement. The original guy came out, they exchanged a few words, and informed me that all of a sudden they had run out of bikes. What!!?! No worries, he said. He'd run down to their second location and grab more bikes. My guests had to wait around for an awkward half hour before they could get going. As jerry Seinfeld said to that airline worker, "clearly you don't understand the word 'reservation.'" read more

If i can give this place ZERO stars then I would. My wife and i walked in here inquiring on bike rentals; when my wife asked the clerk (older female) if they rented bikes - the clerk RUDELY AND ABRASIVELY responded with "what do you think?" Following this incident the clerk continued to give my wife an attitude. Perhaps the lady is going through a midlife crisis or was having a bad day, however, nothing justifies an attitude as my wife was pleasant and friendly to her. I have been to Zack's for years and ive never once had a bad experience. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. their rental gear is fairly inexpensive and in good shape. the last couple times we have been here we've brought some pretty large groups of teens to go surfing/boogie boarding. they are always kind enough to give us a group discount and even gave me a free necklace the last time I was there. Zack or one of the employees will show you how to put on a wet suit and give tips on how to use the board. Both surf instructors really know what they're doing. With surfing you have to be patient and realistic. One time is not enough, but your first time out you should be able to get up with the instructors help. The owner and employees appreciate your business and try their best to be fair; be fair back and realize they have a high overhead because of the pristine location. You can't always make solid plans when traveling; I showed up late today to see if I could get a surf lesson in on my last day in Cali. Luckily, the good people at this shop were so helpful. Mike decided that he would take me for an awesome surf lesson. He was a great instructor and very patient and supportive (I had a bunch of really bad wipeouts, I'm a heavy dude). Mike is a very good host too - he offered a chair for my friend who wasn't surfing and water for us. After wiping out a number of times and seeing my fatigue (and fear of going out further), he offered the boogie board and flippers for an extended time. He even brought the boards back and forth for me. I saw the bad reviews after patronizing this store, and I was shocked. Unfortunately on my end I was late returning because I didn't know what time they were closing up shop. But the other employees called us (his brother) and were very gracious and even gave time for a quick warm water shower rinse. Thanks for making my last day in Cali epic! read more

The staff/owner are incredibly rude and unprofessional, the equipment is expensive to rent, yet very sandy and dirty, and the unhelpful attitude they present to customers pretty much sucks the fun out of why you are trying to rent their equipment to begin with. Very big unhappy hassle. Go across the street- rentals are cheaper, newer, cleaner and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I'd avoid Zack's HB. On vacation and wanted to try something new, so my hotel recommended this place for me to learn how to surf. They were super mellow and very friendly. Fortunately I came in when a few other people were about to take a lesson (class rate). While I was in a "class," the teacher was sure to still take the time for each person to see how they were doing on the lesson. We started with proper mounting while still on the sand and after we got that set up, off to the water! While we did have a person who got it fairly quickly, someone who was steady at getting good at it, and someone who needed more help, our instructor was still able to help each and every one of us get better. After the lesson, they said we could use the board and outfit til closing and gave us some wax. This guy was great and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a refresher course or for someone who has never been on a board (like myself). Bonus: For guests at the Shore break, you can apparently charge it to your room. read more

My friends and I arrived at 9:30am to order our breakfast. Unfortunately it was closed, but your website says they're open 8-5. Awesome shop. Joe was great. He gave us the best prices on beach. Big business prices but small business attention. We bought boards, wetsuits, rented boards and bikes. They even loan you a sand wheelchair for free if you show them you are handicapped. My mother in-law had a hip replacement and would have had a hard time walking on the sandy beach. She said this is the most fun she's had in a long time. Talk about customer service. This place does not overcharge completely disagree with that review those prices aren't even real I rented the two seater bike for 25/hr and went over slightly and they had every right to charge me for the next hour but they didn't. My wetsuit also fits perfectly. If you want to go to a place where the people can look at you once and pick out the perfect size and know their stuff this is the place. my husband and i LOVE renting boards here. hes a huntington native, but we live in LA now, and we make the drive down just to rent from Zack's when we surf. They have a really good selection of boards usually and the staff is a bunch of super friendly younger surfer dudes. Ive never had an issue with customer service, everyone has been super chill in regard to helping us pick boards and taking our cards and IDs and whatnot. Ive even had them skim off the time when we barely crossed over into the next hour of a rental. bottom line, if im willing to make a 45 minute drive for a board rental, you should be willing to as well! read more

Stopped by Zacks because it was the first spot I saw. Teenage staff was friendly and too the point. I paid for an hour and they held onto my driver license until finished. I rented the double surrey bike for my nephew and I. Fits 2 people. Not as comfy cause the seats were ripped and had patches. Most of the surreys were in the same worn out condition. Rode for about 45 minutes, was pretty beat afterwords cause the kid was too short to help pedal. Such a cool place. We like the food here. Their burgers are pretty good. Not too pricey, if you compare to the other places in Huntington. They close relatively early though. Zack is a nice guy, the others were maybe a bit less friendly, but when you're dealing with a lot of people who ask you stupid questions, I would be less friendly too. We took a surfing lesson and it was great. The instruction on the sand seemed to be helpful for some in my group (we were a total of 4). The others stood up on the board, unexpectedly, pretty soon. I sort of took in the information, rationally, but I noticed I didn't really get it. I had to make mistakes first then I started to see what the instructor meant. I had 1 question, and after 7 employees passed me from one to the next, NO ONE could help me. I just wanted longer board shorts. They obviously are not there to provide customer service. The 1st employee said she didn't work in the kids store, so she couldn't help me, then when I turned around 3 minutes later, she was helping someone in the kids store. How rude is that!?!?!
