Decided to go to Zana to celebrate a birthday. There was 3 of us. The decoration and ambiance of the place are really nice. The colors are beautiful. The server did a decent job. Now... for the food. We ordered margaritas. They were ok, nothing impressive. We had the beet salad which was great, it was tasty even though the whipped feta to beet ratio was off. We also ordered the calamari, they were over breaded. Lastly, and perhaps most disappointing, was the Tomahawk. The birthday person wanted it and the server said it could feed up to 4 people. So we got it, asked for medium. After about 50 minutes (time which we were warned about) it came. The presentation is quite fancy. It comes with bourbon potatoes and onions. They light it on fire for show purposes. The potatoes were tasteless, and I mean tasteless. The steak was overcooked. Maybe two pieces in the middle were cooked medium and pretty much the rest was medium well to well done. It was also extremely fatty, and I mean chunks of fat around it which I guess it's how they get to say it's 48 oz. It definitely couldn't have fed 4 people. And what do you say at that point? We have been waiting for 50 minutes for this $150 steak and it's overcooked and extra fatty, give us another one? Try again? So we just went ahead, ate it and when we were asked how it was we said it was good because that's what you do when saying anything else than that would result in nothing but a "sorry". We were also called before we showed up to be told we only had the table for 2 hours and after that we had to go. I guess because we ordered the tomahawk they gave up another 24 minutes before they told us they had a 9 people reservation coming. Overall for a $300 dining experience in Birmingham, it was not what I expected. Farewell Zana, this will be it for us. read more

Long wait with reservations, we had a 9p resy - they were clearing tables, moving chairs, rushing us out, reminding us to leave, all so they could set up for bottle service in our area. If you want to use our table for bottle service, don't let us reserve it. It was my birthday and it felt like they were kicking us out. My friend's dirty martini was nasty. Unwelcoming overall and would not eat here again. read more

Came here as an impromptu venture for my partners birthday. The location is great, right in the heart of Birmingham. Doormen greeted us. We were seated promptly at our reservation time (booked less than a day in advance) and were just awed by the decor. It was so open and modern, yet still lush with greenery and glass. Very nice. It was a bit loud, but it was a saturday at 10pm downtown and the bar was in full swing, so thats just par for the course. Our waitress Lea, immediately brought us sparkling and still water with citrus wedges and was so excited to extol upon the cocktails and delicious dishes. I had the spiced margarita with citrus peel and spice salt garnish (very good and strong) , she had the lady something, it was a floral gin based drink. (I dont even like Gin or floral notes much, but even I enjoyed a sip or three!) One thing ill say is the cocktail menu needs less cutesy verbiage and instead needs to list the ingredients. Bare minimum I should know the liquor base of the house cocktail im consuming. Some drinks offer this on menu. Many dont. Please owners, make that consistent. Keep the cute descriptions if you must but let us all know what were ordering. Your drinks are great. Stand by them. Youll get more sales IMO. For appetizers we had the steak tartare and Brioche Garlic Bread. (The latter not being on the online menu) the Garlic bread was served as a pull apart loaf or monkey style as my little nieces call it, and it tasted great dipped in the oil on the plate. Reminded me of a the cheddar bay biscuits at red lobster I had as a kid, but much more refined and fresh. The steak tartare was pretty good, very serviceable, but we honestly felt the whole "smoked" aspect a bit gimmicky and detracted from what could be a really sublime dish. It just gave the plate an overcooked grey look with a hint of butane that just wasn't necessary. It was still quite serviceable and the marrow toast was great with it. Added a very nice, chewy texture that brought it all home. She had the Amish Chicken for a main. It was earthy and fresh with micro greens. The creamy polenta really brought its texture game to the chew of the meat while the truffles added the perfect savory touch to an already refined dish. I had the Rabbit Rigatoni with porcini mushrooms and housemade ricotta cheese. It was beyond my wildest expectations. The rabbit was stewed, shredded, earthy, hearty, with a just a savory hint of game to it. The pasta was fresh and had just the right texture for picking up everything with it. And the ricotta, well, it was the perfect amount. Not so much as to overpower the dish, but enough for nice clarity on every bite. Simply superb. We ordered a coffee and a cappuccino with a lemon cake for dessert. I was already so full and satisfied that I almost passed, but im so, SO glad I didnt because the coffee drinks were very well made, the lemon cake was so fluffy and light. It was the perfect pick me up we needed for the ride home. Our waitress Lea, mustve seen our reservation or heard me toast "Happy Birthday" to my partner and added a candle to the cake just to make it special. Very kind, and very appreciated human touch. It really meant the world to my partner. Very classy. The owner himself came over to check on us. Very polite and charming. I saw another yelper leave a 1 star experience at the same time we were dining, and I will note this. The acoustics in this place can be as bad as the food, service, and ambience are great. It was loud. It was somewhat crowded. But im half deaf and somehow managed. It was 10pm on a saturday, of course the bar is loud. It wasnt ideal for my table certainly, but thats life. If it was that loud on a tuesday at 7, then id be upset. Im just happy my partner had a good birthday and we both really enjoyed our meals and service. Will come again for sure. And from someone used to eating and working in NYC, this place is beautiful. A true open design with a particular aesthetic split between sterile modernism thats brought alive with greenspace and old school touches. The prices are also very reasonable. Wouldn't recommend. They sat us next to the door that kept opening when it was 5 degrees out. We froze. It was not enjoyable at all. We were reminded that we had a 2 hour limit as soon as we sat down, and the waitress seemed to rush us for our order. No mocktail list, it was "whatever the bar tender is feeling" ordered whatever that was, and it was gross. The food itself took 50 minutes to come out and it was cold when it did. Had the baked feta, it was basically baked garlic - disgusting. Ordered the scallops which were decent themselves but the orzo that came with it was super dry and not at all how it was described on the menu. It was just so so. The ambiance was stunning, trendy and clean decor, fun music, but service wasn't the friendliest or helpful, and the food wasn't as full of flavor as I expected. We got a charcuterie board, meatballs, and tartar to start. Charcuterie wasn't too exciting, meatballs were tasty, but the tartar was missing something. It tasted like olive oil and meat rather than a bold hit of flavor. Next round of food was the short ribs, whipped potatoes, broccolini, halibut, and spicy pig. The best was the halibut and short rib. Short rib was super delicious and sat on a yummy bed of mashed sweet potatoes! For dessert I would recommend the lemon cake. The red wine chocolate cake was dry!! Overall, if you're looking for more of appealing ambiance and fun music, come here! read more

Ambiance was visually appealing but food was significantly lacking. The Halibut was so dry you had to drink water to get it to go down. The Bass was fishy and crunchy. The Brussel sprouts were shredded and burnt. The only highlights were the meatballs and the broccolini. To make matters worse...the roach pictured was in the hall near the kitchen on the way to the restrooms. Our server was very attentive and good though so it made it tolerable. My wife and I went on a Friday night with reservations. Great food, I got the branzino with a coriander sauce and my wife got the filet (hers was better than mine with an onion-y sauce that was mind-blowing). Cocktails were good, but nothing to write home about. One of the real stars was the dessert, the gooey pecan tart with bourbon caramel ice cream. Incredible and made in house. The overall ambiance was good too, didn't have to listen to everyone else's conversations. Perfect for a date. We will definitely be back. Great service, amazing atmosphere, AWFUL STEAK SUACE. I started with the beat and goat cheese salad. The salad had beats, grapefruit and goat cheese. I love beets and goat cheese. However, I felt like the grapefruit didn't pair well with the other ingredients and was very overpowering. The people that I was with really liked it so this is just a personal preference. My main course was a steak frites. The steak was cooked, a perfect medium rare and the fries were good. However, the sauce on top of the steak was a tragedy. It reminded me of a sauce someone's mom would put on meatloaf. It was like A1 but worse. Why would you ruin an incredible, perfectly cooked cut of meat with such a terrible sauce? Two other people I was with got the filet mignon which was delicious and cooked perfectly but topped with the same terrible sauce! They didn't like it either. So I don't think it was such me. Overall I would come back but I would get a steak with no sauce. They have other menu items I would try that sounds good. I was just really disappointed with the steak sauce. read more

I hosted a birthday celebration recently in the private dining room. It was elegant and well managed by servers Mel and Lawrence. Their attention and willingness to accommodate was exceptional! I chose Zana's initially because of a few things: first the beauty of the restaurant is so well designed and furnished and the kindness of the entire staff. Our appetizer options were crispy shrimp; meatballs with marinara, parmesean, and basil. Our salad choice was the chopped wedge...all delicious! Our main courses were choices of Amish chicken, Faroe Island Salmon, and Bucatini Arrabiata pasta...all so good! I had the Salmon; served with mashed potatoes and green beans. I was most satisfied...and my guests raved about everything...to include the ambiance and background music! From planning, beginning to end, was exceptional -- beverages, food, and service! Zana has been on my list of places to try in Birmingham and I'm so glad I finally had a chance to stop in! It is located in downtown Birmingham surrounded by lots of shops and other bars and restaurants. To start, the ambiance is absolutely beautiful - high ceilings, gorgeous bar, warm lighting, and a glass wall opening to the kitchen. I had eaten before so only came for coffee and dessert but I was seated next to the kitchen and couldn't keep my eyes off the dishes they were preparing! We ended up going with the coconut malabi and carrot cake desserts. I'm a fan of all things custard so I really enjoyed the coconut malabi, but this may not be a choice for everyone. I thought the flavors were light, creamy, and had a wonderful balance of textures with the apple and toasted coconut toppings. The carrot cake was decadent, had a good amount of spice, and the goat cheese frosting was to die for! Service was good despite it being very busy at the time we went. I will definitely be back to try the food! read more

We visited Zana on Saturday night for a 6:15 reservation. We arrived on time. The ambiance was lively and festive. The restaurant was busy but not full for the holiday season. We were promptly seated at our table, which oddly was a table for 6 and not 4, which was the size of our party. While we had a nice evening and enjoyed our meals, the service was very rushed. It felt like the minute we were seated, the service staff was rushing us to order our dinner. We didn't even get our drink order in before they were asking if we were ready to order. We promptly ordered an appetizer and our server seemed unhappy that we had not yet decided on our main plate at the same time. And then they asked to take all of the menus except one. I completely understand the need to turn tables around but this was at a new level. What keeps me coming back to restaurants is the experience. This missed the mark for me. read more

The waiter took 45 minutes to even get our dinner order. My water glass was only filled once despite it being empty. The baked feta was underwhelming. Phenomenal redo of a space that has been several different restaurants over the years. Zane is bright, open and inviting. It was especially nice to be there on a night when the windows out front were open to the street. Service was attentive without being overbearing. The pacing was great for a date night. We had the octopus and split a salad. We each had a different fish (the halibut and black bass). The halibut was perfectly cooked and buttery in taste and texture. The bass was savory but with some fruity overtones - really delicious. The lemon cake for dessert was a surprise in its taste and textures. Came here with a group of friends on a Thursday night. We had reservations and were seated right away. The ambiance was nice, they had a DJ playing, and the bar was pretty packed for a Thursday night. Our server was very attentive and offered great drink recommendations. We ordered a few appetizers for the table including the steak tartare, octopus and a dozen oysters. I'm not a fan of steak tartare but everyone else seemed to enjoy it. The octopus was really flavorful but the oysters were terrible. They definitely weren't fresh, the mignonette that came with them wasn't even good, how do you mess that up? For my entree I ordered the shrimp reginette which was absolutely horrendous. On their menu they list the pastas as house-made, there was nothing house-made about this! Shrimp was definitely not fresh, and the pasta tasted as if it had been washed with soap. My husband had the halibut which was really delicious and flavorful, not sure what happened with my dish. I didn't try the branzino but our friends seemed to really like it. The drinks were good and they have an extensive wine list. I probably won't be back for dinner anytime soon, but it's a cute spot for drinks and appetizers. read more

Such great food and service! We were done eating in less than an hour. Appetizers came out almost immediately and the entrees were very quick as well. The atmosphere was very cute and a great place for a nice dinner. The brioche was good but a little too buttery in my opinion. It made it a little oily. The wagyu meatballs were also recommended to us and were nice. They came with perfectly soft toasted bread and pine nuts were inside. The short ribs were AMAZING!! So tender and juicy. Would definitely recommend ordering. The spicy pig was a black squid pasta with seafood and it was everyone at the tables favorite along with the short ribs. It was so flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The filet was also pretty good but not anything special. Very standard. The wedge salad was just ok. Probably would not order again. The flavors were alright at best. Overall all of the service, appetizers and entrees were great! read more

It is so very easy to criticize. But how many people take time to appreciate...I am so grateful for the capacity to dine out, spend money and receive the bounty of ZANA. I wouldn't change a thing. I made reservations here for my wife's birthday. We were excited to try a newer restaurant in Detroit. The hostess that greeted us was very kind and professional, however, our server was odd and awkward. It kicked the night off on a bad note. We primarily decided to come here because my wife loves oysters and we make a tradition of including oysters in the picture on her birthday. We started with a dozen oysters and were sorely disappointed. They came out lukewarm - instead of plating them on a bed of ice like any other place, they were plated on what we eventually realized was some type of rock salt. If the temperature alone wasn't gross enough, they were covered in this off-putting topping that tasted kind of like pickles. It totally detracted from the taste of the oyster. Between the gross appetizer and the odd service we decided not to risk the rest of the night and left for a restaurant that we knew would be a reliably good experience. We wanted to like this place and I feel bad writing a negative review, but I think they need to re-examine their menu and perhaps better train their servers. I think this place has potential but they need to perhaps consult some higher level talent when constructing their menu and ambience. Would love to see them do well- we need more high quality restaurants in Birmingham! read more

Doesn't live up to the hype. The "ambiance" was above average but nothing particularly special. It definitely doesn't justify the crazy high price. To start off, the service was below average, I couldn't tell you how long our table waited to see our waitress or even have our water glasses filled up, it just seemed like we were constantly waiting for her to come back at each step of the way. Food & Drink: The house bread was very good, but $9 for bread it is pretty wild. I wouldn't recommend ordering the Bernadette as a drink unless you love spicy, I myself enjoy spicy and liked it, but it was even spicy for me. Anyone else who ordered it was to the point of basically coughing upon the first sip. I'd give a warning to anyone about to order it to let them know that. I'd expect a better blended drink for $16. The summer truffle gemelli pasta was average, it lacked flavor but at the same time tasted very salty, so a bit of a turn off, but not bad by any means. For a meatless pasta, not worth the $34 price point. The wagyu meatballs were very good, tasty, and a decent sized portion for an appetizer. If anything I'd recommend ordering them as your meal. The truffle fries were amazing! 10/10 taste. But again, $18 for fries, is just crazy. I personally wouldn't go back but if you do go try it out, I'd just stick to the shareable portion of the menu, that seemed to be the better tasting option and better value. That was the consensus at our table anyway. The music was also very loud during the entirety of our dinner, hard to hear what anyone was saying trying to yell over it, then other tables were yelling over it, so you could clearly hear other tables. I'd probably give it a 2.5/5 overall. Not bad by any means but just so not worth the price and not really my scene. At this price point, I just expect the food, drinks, or the service to be exceptional, all 3 were just okay. I know it opened recently so hopefully there will be some changes for the better. read more

Fun and swanky place! I am SO sorry I didn't take photos! Check out their IG zana_bham. That is how I found them. Modern and inviting. Glass windows to the kitchen, great food and drinks. Chris was our server and guide throughout the night. He suggested the Birminghattan and had a recommendation for a smooth red wine after. That was exactly where I needed my palate to be on a cold winter evening. The east coast oysters were phenom! The steak tartar was smoked along with the bread they served which gave such great flavor. We also got the wedge and burrata salad which were exploding with flavor! read more

Beautiful place server was nice but a bit awkward. Food was overpriced too many specials. I think I almost fell asleep there were so many. We ordered a shrimp app and the sauce it came with was tasteless. We almost walked out but ended up eating salads that were just ok. My first glass of wine was not a full glass. Sorry we will only be back for drinks.... Maybe. My review may be tainted as I did not eat a full meal but nothing sounded great and some of the specials were quoted were $100+. Very beautiful atmosphere, great service. The highlight of the night for me was the Pommes Aligot, I cant explain it, but it was like elevated cheesy mash potatoes. It was amazing. I didn't have any of their signature drinks, but they made really great dirty martini's and had a great selection of gin. I had the whole black bass, it was amazing, watch for bones! The Geddes Farm Winter Squash was amazing also. My friend had the rigatoni and it was amazing too from what I tried. For dessert, we had the Valrhona Red Wine chocolate Cake and the Seasonal Croissant Bread Pudding. The bread pudding was my favorite of the 2. Overall really delicious place, sexy ambiance and great service. Would def recommend this place! read more

Food was awesome and vibe was awesome. I'm taking stars off because the waitress was visibly sick and she often to cough in her order station area between table serving. We sat right next to kitchen. I knew as soon as she greeted us she was sick you could tell in her face and voice. I hope we don't get sick. I get it people have to make a buck, but you never know when an a Epidemiologist in Infectious Disease is lurking around. We went to Zana a few days ago with a group of 7 for a birthday dinner. This was my second time going (first time was probably 3 stars due to overpriced items that were so-so). The place has a great ambiance and feels like an upscale restaurant for sure. Our server was lovely, drinks were great and appetizers were great. Then came the entree experience, I ordered a burger 'medium' while everyone else ordered other items. The group received their meals and about 5 minutes goes by and my burger has not been brought out. No big deal, the server grabbed me a cocktail in the meantime and apologized for the inconvenience. Everyone finishes their meal, per my request, as it was about 15 minutes after their food arrived. My burger finally arrives and it is completely RAW. I am not entirely sure if they forgot to put my order in, if they rushed it, if they mistake medium for raw, or if the chef doesn't know how to make a burger. I rarely send my food back, maybe 1/500 meals. They apologized and I requested nothing else but for them to take it off the bill as everyone else was finished eating and I didn't want to be the bottleneck holding the rest of the evening up. Well they brought me out a piece of RAW Halibut which I did not really want. I bite in to it and there was like a cold center. I didn't request it and I didn't want to eat as I was ready to leave by this time. Anyways, they comped all of our appetizers, which were great, and a lot of the drinks. That is a nice gesture, but I don't really care to go to dinner and not eat a meal. I don't believe I will be back. read more
