Then when walking down a bit further, there.was hardly any line at Zanes! Since we had limited time, why not? Actually IMHO, I kind of think a lot of the shrimp trucks taste all the same, or similar. Garlic shrimp ... yep ... sweet chili shrimp ... yep... so sometimes save the wait and get your food faster! But on the other hand, I totally understand and respect the following of Giovanni's. Great food! I was surprised that more people were not eating there versus the other truck a few yards away. I couldn't believe how great the food (see the pictures) and service was and couldn't help but talk to the cashier to ask why. Hands down the Northshore food truck winner after we tried both Zane's and Giovanni's! Zane's food truck sells Pineapple Coconut Shrimp and also Sweet Chili Thai Shrimp, two of the best dishes you could ask for ANYWHERE. Their garlic shrimp and fish and chips are also very good. And as opposed to their famous competition Giovanni's, the shrimp are peeled and with lots of garlic, which is a big deal to me, and the flavors are much more vibrant. Avoid the long lines and enjoy the much better facilities only yards away. But check for yourself. read more

Decided to walk over to Zanes because the pic of their shrimp looked awesome, and they were peeled so the sauce could actually stick to the shrimp! BEST SPICY SAUCE EVER! Guy lied to me about not accepting credit cards. After I pay in cash, I see another guy pay with a credit card 5 minutes later. Then when I ask the old guy, "I thought you didn't accept credit cards?" He lies again and said "I don't." Then when I tell him I saw you take that other guy's card, he says, "I don't take your card." I have no idea what the problem with this place is, but they just poach people who don't want to wait in line for Giovani's. Well the food is amazing. It's a shrimp truck so all their dishes are shrimp. Not the healthiest option around the N. Shore but it's damn sure one of the tastiest. The food was ok, but I would be sad for anyone that had this as their only Hawaii garlic shrimp truck experience, because it's not the real kahuku shrimp that you expect and the service was unfortunately very terrible. Got here and didn't want to stand in line for Giovanni's nor drive further into town to the other trucks, so we settled for Zane's since the pictures looked ok and there was only one other family in line. First sister got up to the front, and ordered quickly by saying "garlic shrimp!" excitedly. The guy said "What about it?" So she said, "oh, I'd like to order one?" The plate was $13, and she was charged $13.75 total, with tax. Second sister ordered a lemon butter shrimp ($13) and water bottle - came out to $16.75. She paid, then thought about it and realized $3.75 seemed like a lot for the water, so asked me to ask him how much a water was when I ordered my meal. I ordered the garlic shrimp ($13) and the hot and spicy ($13). I asked about the water, and he said $2. My sister next to me said she thought she was overcharged, and he said "well you gotta pay for tax." She said if the water bottle was $2, then she thought the tax was high at $1.75 when my other sister's meal was $0.75 tax. Then he said her plate was $14, so was a different price than the garlic shrimp, but the sign said $13 for both. He threw her the overcharged dollar out the window. My meal, without water, came out to $29. I paid also, and realized with tax, my meal should have come out to about $27, so I was also overcharged but didn't say anything. The person in line after us was an Asian tourist and was trying to decide on which Hawaiian Sun drink to get - and he said "oh just choose already!" The food did not come with a lemon like it does in the pictures and we wanted one, but didn't want to upset the guy again. Since he didn't yell at my husband when he asked for napkins to clean the table, we made him ask for it. The guy speared a lemon slice on a knife and jerked it away so quickly after offering it that the lemon fell on the table. Overall, the service was not good and the cost seemed arbitrary, even though the plate prices were printed and should not have been so questionable. It makes me sad for visitors who come to north shore excited and this guy puts a damper on their experience. The food was ok, although a little over cooked. It was like sautéed frozen Costco shrimp with tails on, not the large shrimp with shell that you come to think of with the shrimp trucks. Stopped by for Garlic Shrimp. The line at Giovanni's was long and there was no line at Zane's. My husband went to Giovanni's while I went to Zane's so we could compare. My husband got his food right away. There were 12 shrimp with 2 scoops of rice. The shrimp had the casing on them and deveined. Zane's plate took a little while longer to prepare (obviously made to order rather than premade) and also had 12 shrimp with a heaping scoop of rice, salad, and spicy dipping sauce. The shrimp was already peeled and deveined. Giovanni's shrimp was tough while Zane's was a lot more tender and perfectly cooked. The cost at Giovanni's was $16 and $15 at Zane's. The lady who took our order was very friendly. Would definitely recommend if wanting garlic shrimp. read more

I came up to the window, all by myself, and ordered two plates. While waiting, I asked for the name of the truck, so I could leave them a check in at facebook (cause that's what nice people do). When they called my name, they had two open plates, so I asked if I could get it to go. The guy (older, portly, bearded haole guy) said, "Too late now." "You should have asked for it to go!" I said, "You saw me come up here all by myself, and didn't think to ask me if I wanted it to go?" He told me, "You can go fuck yourself." I wanted to satisfy my shrimp cravings since I was staying in Haleiwa on the north shore. Some friends wanted to have a spontaneous lunch trip over to the food trucks in Haleiwa and per the usual, we had 8 orders for Giovanni's. I love shrimp but I dislike peeling it (Shocker! Since I'm Filipino and all right?!) so I wanted to check out other places in the vicinity. This led me to Zane's Simply Shrimp truck. What caught my eye was the breaded shrimp - none of the other trucks were really advertising this and it was the cliche order of garlic scampi. A huge plus was that there wasn't a long line so I knew I could count on a quicker order compared to Honu's, which was next door. When I finally got to order, the older lady was nice. I asked if they had the Thai chili shrimp a la carte because a friend wanted to try it without ordering the whole meal and guess what?! They did offer it for $10 compared to the full $15 meal, which I didn't mind. I also ordered the Hawaiian Coconut Shrimp as well which was $15, per a recommendation from a friend. The lady said it would be about a 20 minute wait which I didn't mind since my other friends were still waiting for their order at Honu's. But after sitting down, it only took about 10 minutes for them to get my order out. What was really nice was that the lady was kind enough to provide me the whole meal for the Thai Chili shrimp instead of a la carte, which greatly appreciated - don't mind the extra salad and rice included. The Hawaiian Coconut Shrimp had salad and fries. The salad was tasty with the dressing already provided and the fries were crunchy just how I liked them. The shrimp was okay - it had a lemon/pina colada sauce that you could dip the shrimp into, which really brought out that "Hawaiian" flavor aka tropical zest. But the stand-out was the Thai Chili Shrimp - combined with the spicy sauce, it delivered the flavor and taste I expected it to. The only reason this place is getting one star is because you can't give it no stars! The crusty old fart that was taking orders was the rudest person I have ever met in the food industry. It took 20 minutes for an order of fish and chips. When I picked my order up he dropped my plate down on the counter and I asked him if I could please have some ketchup so he grabs a little cup of ketchup and puts it on top of my food. Then I asked him if they had tarter sauce....he slams both hands on the counter and leans forward like he's trying to intimidate me, lets out a pissed off sigh and says CAN I GET YOU ANYTHING ELSE! as he threw the container on my plate. If I hadn't paid $13.61 for the food I would've picked it up and threw it back in his face. I went to sit down and there was an Asian family sitting at my table and I expressed how rude the guy was and they asked me where I went. It told them and they said they originally went there but he was so rude to them so they went to another wagon. He tried to charge them $95 and stood there yelling at them that they were adding wrong. The total only came to $75 (yes...$75 at a chip wagon for 2 adults and 2 children!) Another girl was walking by and heard us talking and she said he yelled at her too. To top off this bad experience the food was so disgusting. Been heading to the North Shore a lot lately, and I've made it a point to try NEW (to me) North shore grinds! Don't get me wrong, I love me some Giovanni's and Matsumoto's, but there's so much more food to be discovered than shrimp and shave ice, and I think I made my first discovery! Zane's Simply Shrimp is a truck parked in the same truck lot as the Giovanni's HALEIWA location. It's right at the beginning of Old Haleiwa town in a gravel lot, across from McDonald's. The thing that I discovered here was not the shrimp, but the FISH N CHIPS! I have become a FAN of fish n chips, having tasted some of the best in Canada, Austrailia, New Zealand, London and Boston, but never finding anything quite as good here in Hawaii. That is....until I tried Zane's! This is the best I've ever had here on Oahu, and if you know of any other, PLEASE inform me because I have been missing out on good fish n chips until I met Zane's! The fish used here is a local Basa and it was juicy, flakey, tender and battered just right! It was also HUGE - huge enough for my husband and I to share one fillet. Sprinkled with a little bit of lemon juice, I didn't even need the tartar sauce that came with it. It was steaming hot and delicious. The only down side was that the fries were "over fried" and a little dry, but it's ok, I can get fries anywhere. It's the fish that had me salivating. Yes, I know, "North Shore" + "Shrimp" go together in a sentence just like "Boston" + "Clam Chowder" are peas in a pod. But, if you're tired of shrimp while on the North Shore, and are feeling a bit outside of the box, why not try fish instead? Zane's fish n chips to be exact. The fact that they have a sign in their window "no refunds" I should have walked away. We ordered their coconut shrimp and onion rings. The coconut shrimp was good but not great. The sauce it came with was gross. Came with frozen fries...I think 6 fries total and a little gross mixed salad. Onion rings were ok. Spent $23 and what a waist of money. We usually hit up Giovanni's but this truck shared the same name as my sons and we had to try something different! I do not recommend Zanes to anyone. My family and I decided to go here because Hono's was closed (we probably would've been better off driving all the way to Kahuku instead). Hono's is by far the best truck over there, even compared to Giovanni's. Giovanni's is ok if you're a tourist and want to eat there just because it's popular, but I'm telling you Hono's is the way to go. But anyway, Zanes on the other hand is way over priced with bad customer service. The plates are super flimsy, drinking from the actual can of soda is unthinkable because it's so filthy, and good luck asking for an extra napkin or fork. Just like alllll the other reviews on here (none of us are exaggerating) the man there is rude, unhappy with his job, and doesn't hesitate to yell at paying customers.
