My friends and I started our island food tour in Kahuku. We were at another truck, and after, Jeri suggested here. Jeri: We'll take Da Fun Guy burger, and can you add a slice of taro in it. He: Ummmm, excuse me...what? Jeri: We want Da Fun Guy, and add a slice of taro. Also an order of taro fries. Da Fun Guy is a great burger! The worker grilled a slice of taro, and it was on the side. We stopped at the Sugar Mill for lunch and I went straight to the Tarot Hut truck. Their menu did not disappoint! There were so many good-looking options, it took me a while to decide what I wanted. We have been amazed by the amount of food truck options the island has to offer. For every meal, he didn't want to search for a really good food truck that offered unique and local flavors. During a drive on Kamehameha highway we came across multiple food truck parks. One that caught our eye was the park with this food truck - simply because of the uniqueness that they had to offer. Everything on their menu was customizable and great when you have a further travel that has dietary restrictions. I ended up tasting their taro burger with chicken and taro fries. The bunnies unique they make it in house fresh every day. In all the experience was just amazing. They were packed over the weekend but we managed to get some grub in. Burger and fries goes well all around. We got just that but to our surprise no taro burger bun. I guess they ran out. Taro aka kalo is a special food. It's nutritious from the root to the leaf. The taro hut brings taro to the main stage and the dance on your tastebuds is memorable. The food truck had no line and the food came out hot and fast. There are taro buns and taro slices, but the star for me is the palusami plate (vegetarians, vegan, and gluten free). The taro is cooked soft and then topped with melt in your mouth taro leaves. This is all saturated in the best coconut milk in your life. There's no canned stuff here. I was told that this is a Samoan preparation and I'm ready for more! The plate looks small but it is very filling. This is not to be missed. I happened to be in the area and I found this place on Yelp looking for a place to eat that has vegetarian options. This place is in an area with other food trucks which was a bit tricky to find since navigation led us elsewhere but I called and they were able to direct me to the right place. The burger and fries were quite tasty, the meal was around $15 and definitely cheaper than your average meal in Hawaii. Such a great burger - make a stop at the Taro Hut when you're on the North Shore at the old sugar mill. The ube bun is epic - so soft with a bit of sweetness. Food truck we were planning to visit was out of most items and we hadn't seen this one before so decided to give it a try. The plate was quite confusing. It felt a mix of different ethnicities and the only thing that was done well was the coconut milk taro slice. For starters, there was very little curry lamb and what was there was mostly bone. What little I had was tasty, but salty. The rice was al dente jasmine, the clear noodles were way too salty and couldn't figure out what the Mac/potato salad let alone explain it. If your looking for something g a little different and Polynesian, This is the place for you. I got the Palusami plate. It came with 3 pieces of taro in coconut milk, some palusami, rice and chicken curry with this red sauce on top, the red sauce was a really good addition to the curry. The plate cost $15 and I was worth the money. The food was delicious, I do wish they had the chop suey instead of curry, Hopefully next time I eat there they have it. Taro Hut is situated in the same food truck park as Mike's Huli Chicken - they were only one of two outfits open past 7:00pm on a weekday and the reviews were great. We wanted Hawaiian fare on our last evening, so we stopped by and were glad we did... THE HUT SPECIAL Delicious curry sauce that reminds me a lot of Burmese cuisine with deep flavors and gritty textures. Lamb fat is a little excessive and there's also potato and carrot chunks. It's wonderful to mix with the white rice. There's also chop suey - flimsy, dark yet translucent spaghetti noodles with beef and green onions, slightly salty, which is probably why you have the three taro slices (looks like bread) with coconut cream. If you know taro, the flavor is pretty much neutral so it's a good combo with any strong flavors. They don't stop there, there's also a scoop of loose scrambled eggs, ham cubes and peas. Sort of an add on out of left field but much appreciated nevertheless. The entire plate is large and heavy so don't worry about leaving hungry. I love the effort and the unique and diverse display of flavors all in one menu item. LAULAU PLATE The feature item here is pork wrapped in a steamed taro leaf that you eat along with the meat. Don't fear the leaf - it's a tad seaweed-ish, but I think it pairs very well with the heary shredded pork. Other than the foil-wrapped protein item, the rest of the plate is the same as the Hut Special - chop suey, taro slices and scoop of white rice. The proprietor guy was super nice even though we might have been his last customers of the day and the food came out right away to feed our hungry souls. 4+ stars but I'm rounding up for the uniqueness, service and value! read more

Taro Hut was a fair place. We went to Ry's earlier in the day and made a point to return for dinner to try Taro Hut's burgers. We are big on smash burgers and one with a purple taro bun, sign me up! Unfortunately, no purple taro bun for us (didn't know until we picked up the burger and opened the container) and no taro fries to try (opted for fries at Seven Brother so I can't compare but the Seven Brothers fries are amazing and pair nicely with the burger). Service was fine. Knocked off one star for no purple bun and one for no taro fries. Smash burger itself was good (not the best but good) and the bun was soft and paired nicely with the burger (we ordered the double patty to share). Ambiance was nice - typical food park energy.
