I went right when they opened on a Saturday morning. No line and plenty of seating. They were quick with the order and tasted fresh with a punch of garlic. If you love garlic, their garlic butter Shrimp is your dream. For myself I wish there was more butter and less garlic. I kind of just tasted garlic on garlic and then more garlic. I was surprised I could finish my food in one sitting since that almost never happens. I left still feeling a bit hungry and wishing for more buttery garlic shrimp. I love garlic shrimp, and I'm a sucker for spicy garlic shrimp! Big Wave just did NOT deliver on flavor. The spicy garlic sauce was bad and did not have butter garlic flavor...it ruined the taste and I didn't finish my plate. The regular butter garlic shrimp tasted better. I usually ALWAYS go to Jenny's Shrimp truck right across the street, but I had visitors who insisted on eating at Giovanni's (they were closed today due to short staff, and I don't care for their shrimp either) so they picked Big Wave despite me advocating for Jenny's. By far the best garlic shrimp truck on the north shore!!! It comes with a mini Cesar salad and the shrimp are perfectly garlicky over a bed of rice with the option to get the hot sauce on the side. I've tried several tricks over the years and Big Wave shrimp is by far the best. It's located in a small lot across from some local stores with picnic tables that make it a great stop on your each to the beach. My family has been visiting lots of garlic shrimp trucks to see who really makes the best shrimp. Big wave is definitely one of my new favorites. The garlic shrimp seemed like it had very light breading which made it easier to sometimes eat the shell if you're too lazy. There was a lot of garlic and a lot of butter so there was a lot of flavor! The plate comes with rice, salad, and a slice of pineapple. Went to get the famous garlic shrimp and this place did not disappoint. There was barely a line here and the place was quick. I think I spent about $25 overall, but it was well worth it. The salad was simple and delicious, the shrimp were perfectly made and I loved the garlic and oil sauce. Combined great with the white rice. The tables were simple picnic tables and there were plenty in the front and back. We ended up sitting next to a sweet couple who we spoke with and said this was one of their favorite spots. After learning about this truck from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I knew I had to check it out -- and it was absolutely worth it! The shrimp is incredibly fresh, and all the flavors are delicious. Remember when a certain shrimp truck that starts a "G" actually tried and wasn't coasting purely on their name? Yeah, that's what Big Wave Shrimp is like, when G still cared about making a good product. I don't visit shrimp trucks normally, only when out of town friends and family come to visit and it's never a complete Oahu trip without a shrimp truck visit. That said, I have had enough shrimp over the past few years of built up COVID pandemic travel to fill a shrimp pond and some of these trucks are seriously doing nothing but riding on their history. So it's a delight when I actually try a shrimp truck that reminds me of the yesteryears of when shrimp mongers cared. We got two plates, the garlic butter and the lemon pepper and both were delicious. The shrimp were decent size (unlike a place that starts with an "R"), number, firm, and tasty. The seasoning wasn't overpowering, aka swimming in butter, and complimented the shrimp flavor nicely. The rice wasn't mushy (you know which shrimp truck I'm talking about) and we even got slices of pineapple with salad. Salad dressing was defaulted to ranch, so you may want to ask if there are other options as not everyone is a fan of that. We did order a little before 11:00 am, so the polite staff were able to fill our order very quickly and going during peak lunch hours will likely result in slower service. There are about eight tables under umbrellas for patrons to enjoy their shrimp on site. Parking is shared with a number of other food trucks, the nearby smoke shop, and the always worth going to except on Sundays when it is closed, Kaimana shave ice shop. Prices are in line with their competition, but they just have better tasting, better quality, and larger shrimp. So why bother with the other shrimp trucks when you can ride the big wave to Flavortown just like Guy Fieri? read more

Randomly stumbled upon Big Wave Shrimp while getting to Jenny's Shrimp Truck (across the street). Opted to try a couple dishes here since they had the spicy version of the garlic shrimp which sounded very appealing. Spicy Shrimp (~$15.99): Two scoops of rice, simple side salad, small slice of pineapple, and about a dozen shrimps topped with garlic and spicy sauce. I do wish the sauce and garlic was pre-mixed into the shrimps instead of just topped as it wasn't evenly distributed for every bite and hard to mix on your own little plate. The spicy sauce tasted somewhat similar to sriracha though a bit watered down. Nothing special. Rib Plate (~$21): Two scoops of rice, simple side salad, small slice of pineapple and a decent portion of ribs. Rib was unevenly flavored as there were some pieces which were great in flavor and some which was almost nonexistent. Flavor is somewhat similar to a Korean bbq sauce. Texture of the meat was decent - not overly chewy, but not tender either. Small sink available to wash hands after eating in front of the truck! We ordered the spicy garlic shrimp and received our order really quick. I'm not the biggest garlic fan especially if it's chunky so I was pretty overwhelmed by all the garlic covering the top of the rice but to my surprise, it wasn't that bad and the garlic flavor wasn't super overpowering either.
