I need cataract surgery, which is a routine operation, and he seemed to be annoyed that I wanted a second opinion on something so routine. I've never had an operation before, and my eyesight is important to me, so I felt the need to talk to a second doctor. (Isn't that what a good patient is supposed to do?) Zangari was impatient, condescending and abrupt. He showed little interest in answering my questions. In fact, I suspect it irritated him that I arrived with a list of questions, and we only covered a few of them. At one point, for no cause that I could figure out, he commented that I seemed to want to be the doctor. All I wanted was his feedback on some of the things I had read -- e.g., on the three different types of replacement lenses -- but he cut that conversation short. Indeed, he cut the entire visit short, and I spent the remainder of the day (and most of the week) feeling humiliated. Since I won't be going back to him, my money was wasted. My sense of the man is that he is egotistical and wants to feel like the only intelligent person in the room. He may behave this way with only certain types of patients, such as patients who strike him as intelligent or knowledgeable (perhaps because they make him feel threatened), or patients who want specific answers. However, these are just speculations on my part. If I am speculating, it is only because the way he treated me was so puzzling. Most doctors like patients who are well informed and have good comprehension. If he had treated me nicely, I might have bought glasses from him (my eye doctor doesn't dispense glasses). We could have had a business relationship for years to come. In addition to all that, his assistant used a machine on me that Medicare does not cover, and they now expect me to pay $49 for that. I'm not even sure they have a right to charge me for that. On the phone, I had asked them if they "accept assignment" (meaning, do they charge only the fees that Medicare has approved?), and I was told "yes". I think they should have told me that I would have to pay for that procedure.

I questioned him about this questionable and seemingly unorthodox billing methods. He called his insurance company who then, on his behalf, fired me on voice mail. Nice. Fast forward to these past few days. My new provider has left multiple unanswered voice mails. Having had gone to the same doctor since 5th grade when squinting was no longer an option, I was sad and nervous about having to find someone new. After putting it off for a while, I decided it was time for the world to come into focus and made an appointment. My old office was located in a small, quaint building. . . so when I pulled up to this oversized, renovated, historic mill in Fall River, I was intimated and lost. After finding the parking lot located in back of the mill and walking up one flight of stairs near an old smoke stack, I walked into a transformed floor of the mill and felt much more at ease. There are several MDs and ODs located in this office. I see Cristina M. Lopes, O.D. and recommend her with much enthusiasm. I have had two appointments with her over the past 2 years and am very satisfied with the care I received. She takes time to review your health and social history, your vision concerns and needs, and does a great job explaining everything throughout the whole examination. She's very sociable and puts you at ease. I'm usually concerned about overcorrection with my eyesight. . . I'm not a fan of feeling queasy while adjusting to a new prescription. I'm always provided with a sample script of my contacts to trial prior to ordering a year's supply online, which is something I was not provided with at my old place. This past visit, I decided to order a new pair of frames along with my new prescription. The staff on duty to help with this process are fantastic. Without the support of a friend or family member to help choose a new adornment for my face, they provided a much needed helping hand. They listened to what I was looking for, didn't get frustrated when I decided what I wanted was really not what I was originally looking for, and were as excited as I was when I finally found a pair I liked. They were well versed in explaining what my insurance would cover and were very flexible with downpayment options and pricing. And, whether they meant it or not, their praise over how good the glasses looked on when I received my final pair, gave me a huge boost of self esteem and the confidence to wear them more often than I do. Only 4 stars due to location and difficulty parking/finding the actual office. 5 stars for the staff and services they provide!

First, most of his equipment looked out of date and very old. Instead of using the equipment he decided to look at my eyes with a tiny handheld tool and got way too close for comfort. Second, when I was asked to look at the letter chart with my contacts still in I voiced my concern stating "I can barely see anything" meaning, I needed a new prescription. After he was done with the exam, he bumped one of my eyes down from -3.75 to -3.50, the same as the other eye. I know both of my eyes needed a stronger prescription before I even walked into his office and he handed me the wrong prescription. After he told me what my prescription was he told me "YOUR EYES WILL NOT CHANGE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE" meaning my eyesight, that has been worsening since I was 12 years old, will not get worse from here on out. Lastly, I went right after the election for the president and in the most unprofessional manner decided to ask me if I voted. I am extremely upset and uncomfortable with the way my experience went with this doctor. The only good experience I got out of going into his office was having a nice chat with the secretary who helped me figure out my insurance.

Homegirl is....what one would call...perturbed. Her aura has been laden with fog. It clouds homegirls thought and ironically, her vision....you see Homegirl has not been to an eye doctor in some time. Homegirl had one single contact lense left in her bathroom closet but she got two sparkling hazels! She called around frantically for the soonest opening, which happened to be here. (Now we know why they was so available when everyone else was booked out on the lookout!) Mhmmm. Homegirl can't help but be swayed by first impressions. And upon walking in, Homegirl sniffed the unmistakable smell of shrimp jambalaya. She turns left-shrimp. She turns right-shrimp. She takes a seat-shrimpy shrimp! It was like a haunted house for homegirls nose. It was not lunch time, it was not snack time, it was not dinner time, yet the stank was real. Homegirl searched for a civilian on break. A misplaced fork on the reception desk, a take out container, a dirty napkin-anything to reveal food ,would have relieved Homegirl. But nay, the scent is embedded in the carpets and woven into the walls. This was an old smell left brewing in the fibers of any absorbable material. All this before her exam! Homegirl needs you to stay with her for a minute. Her vision was at stake. Without this appointment Homegirl would be the the blind beggar in the book of Mark waitin for Jesus, to touch her eyes. She had to continue with an exam. Now Homegirl sat in the exam chair, doctor seemed friendly. She needed contacts so he asked for homegirls prescription. Homegirl is very busy this Holiday season and doesn't have the strength to recall these numbers. If she don't make time for her Tae Bo tapes, that Christmas fudge will refuse to budge! Now this optometrist was a bit frustrated that homegirls memory could not provide him the information he wished for. Homegirl quickly replied "Cant you just figure it out?" He then asked if there was any way she could find out her OLD prescription first....Homegirl phoned home but her man was making the cashh for homegirls stasshh. No answer. He asked if I had records on my phone or any ideas...at this point Homegirl is annoyed. When she goes to the eye doctor she expects him to be knowledgeable enough to correctly formulate her prescription without the need of an old contact box. Plainer than a bagel, it seemed like it should have been simple. Homegirl would not recommend this establishment, and how she was made to feel because she couldn't do the doctors job. The two stars are for the receptionists, who was kind and helpful and one for Optometrist Lisa Smith who Homegirl had at a previous establishment years ago. She can't dock points from Miss Smith when she had no experience with her. Homegirl is both Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. She gonna tell you how it is but she's also gonna tell you "I love your dress sweetheart". Homegirl is winded. The emotional pain of experiencing it all in real time, and then writing about it, makes Homegirl pine for Lasik. But then Homegirl would be perfect in every way, so maybe she'll stick to contacts so she can still be relatable.

Over the years, my opinions on this matter have changed completely. What I wouldn't give to have 20/20 vision and see the world with crystal clear clarity, without the help of my industrial strength contact lenses (when I take them out, the world becomes one big Monet painting). Luckily, I have the very best ophthalmologist, Iman Ali, in whom I've placed complete trust to keep my peepers healthy and bright since 2005. At that time, I traveled the 45 minutes from my apartment in Quincy, MA to see her in Fall River. Eight years later, I still travel to see her, forsaking many other qualified ophthalmologists in Providence. For my first appointment, she had her work cut out for her: I was fresh from a major car accident during which I'd suffered eye injuries that made wearing my traditional contacts extremely uncomfortable. She was patient, caring, and so confident that I could keep wearing contacts (by the time I reached my twenties vanity had sunken in, and I no longer agreed with my seven year old self that glasses were a badge of honor). She knew instinctively how to care for a young woman who'd suffered a physical and emotional trauma, and with her help, my eyes - and my overall well being - improved. Today, there's barely any remnant of the original injury, and my prescription has, against all odds, grown lighter in strength. Other fantastic details that make Dr. Ali's practice, Total Eye Care, an excellent choice include: a friendly front desk staff (who in all these years have remained intact - I mean, no discernible turnover. This speaks volumes!); a charming little coffee shop in the main lobby before you enter the office; and for those who DO still think that glasses are a true fashion statement, a huge range of high end designer eyewear, including gorgeous prescription sunglasses. If I still liked wearing specs, I'd have no shortage of luxe and lovely options. Dr. Ali is - to coin a well worn phrase - the very best in the business. She's so smart, so sophisticated, and so easy to talk to. She's Brown University educated, NYC trained (where she gained incredible experience working on patients suffering from eye issues in the wake of 9/11), and superbly suited to a practice in an area like The Riv, where folks really appreciate a doctor who remembers all sorts of things about you: little facts that might date back years. While she's thoroughly modern, hers is the type of practice that hearkens back to the physician practices of old, which were built on a strong sense of family, where all generations went to the same doctor -- and that doctor inquired after one's parents, as the pediatric patients matured into adulthood. This makes my annual eye appointment feel like coming home, in the best way!
