I have had this on my list of places to go for quite a while. It's a rooftop bar in downtown Austin. I would recommend making reservations online if you have more than two people in your group but you can also go sit at the walk up bar section. The restaurant is split into two sections, the reserved and the walk up. Right next to the bar is the rooftop pool of the connected hotel and you can get a day pass for the pool if you wanted to try out Zanzibar in a different way. I got Feels Like Summer, which is tequila, pineapple and guava juice, and some chili powder. It was $16. This drink is a 2/5 but the venue is a 4/5 so I settled on 3/5. The chili powder tasted out of place and I'm someone who likes spicy drinks. The drink was disappointing and expensive. Two or three out of four people in our group were disappointed by our drinks. I didn't get any food here but the group next to me left half their food on the table so I feel that says most of what I need to know. However, the view? Very cool. And comfortable furniture to just sit and hang out with your friends. They do tell you that you have a time limit of 2 hours, just FYI. So ultimately: maybe a good place to take friends from out of town, but not that great of a "night out" kind of place. read more

Ever since the first time coming to Zanzibar it has been an Austin favorite for a good time with good drinks. I will definitely be coming back again and again! We had a party of 5 and had made reservations for about 10:30 on a Friday night. We ended up wrapping up dinner early and made our way to Zanzibar to see how long the wait was. The hostess was super nice and able to get us an earlier table which was very accommodating. In my experience a reservation isn't always needed, but if you're wanting to go on a weekend night at a popular time, expect a wait. The whole experience is very fun, riding the elevator to the seventh floor and the whole tiki outdoor style is very nice and feels very classy. They have fans and heaters all around the roof so it's enjoyable on hot sunny days or on colder windy nights. The specialty cocktails fit the theme very well featuring a lot of rum and tequila cocktails in fun glasses which is all very on brand. Most of them tend to be a bit sweet but they have a full bar so you can always order what you like. The waitresses were very attentive and accommodating to any request. Their snack bites are also pretty delicious. It can be a bit pricey for the portions so I wouldn't expect a full dinner, but the taste is there if you're in need of a mid-drink snack. It's right next to the Marriott and there is a big Z sign. In front, there will be someone next to an elevator and you check in there. The rooftop has a great view of the city. It's open and has a great breeze and feel. I got a great rum cocktail with passion fruit and it was delicious. Everything was going great until I ordered the food. I ordered a spicy poke bowl with salmon. Unfortunately, they got my order wrong two times but they were very busy, which is understandable. After 30 eating the salmon poke, I started feeling very nauseous and I needed to sick. I have never felt that way ever after eating a meal. Let's start out with the ambience from the pictures you see here on yelp they kinda do match up well when you get there it's a great place to just meet up to discuss where y'all gonna go next. The second thing the service here is horrible took about maybe 25 to 35 minutes to get our drinks order in and another 20 minutes for the drinks to come out same issue with the food as well and it wasn't even packed. Food was below mid. The third thing is the drinks here are disgustingly strong, and not the type of strong that you're getting your moneys worth but the type of strong that you just can't even enjoy the drinks. He totally shut me down over the phone and simply said NO can't do, don't care your stuck in traffic. I got to location at 8:20 only 5 min past their 15 min grace period and he totally rejected me. I ended up talking to the manager who said oh we have 3 private party today so things are a bit different. Told them if they had 3 private party and one bartender then they should have maybe let others know ahead of time that their policy is not in effect for Sat night. Needles to say we finally got seated and we ordered the following: Pulled pork sliders - it's nothing wow and for sure on the saltier side Burger - a very typical burger if anything it's more on the dry side Duck egg rolls - way too salty Pineapple Salsa - this was actually really refreshing and good Overall their drinks are alright I think other places in Austin for sure have way better drinks and appetizers. Zanzibar is located within the Marriott but it doesn't have the feel of a hotel bar. It's a tiki themed bar that is more upbeat with upbeat music than a typical slow hotel bar. To get to the bar take the elevator to the 7th floor. We made reservations on Open Table and I recommend doing that too especially during busier times and days. The space is big and is outdoors but has heaters to help with the breeze of the cold January night. If you check in on Yelp you get free chips and pineapple salsa. To be honest we weren't huge fans of it because they used plantain chips which didn't really go well with the salsa. My first drink was the duke's pearl ($15) which was refreshing and definitely reminiscent of tiki. My second drink was the devil and the deep blue sea ($15) which was also refreshing and sweet but strong from the bourbon. It's bourbon heavy and strongly bourbon flavored so be careful! This is a place with good vibes and a cool environment with good views of downtown Austin. I'd definitely recommend coming here during a night out for drinks. read more

Very expensive for the quality and amount of things you get. Not very high up so not great views unless you're standing near the rails or get one of the few high-top tables. Better seating options for large groups (6 or more). Attentive and friendly service helped save this experience. Fine place for a short date or drinks before you go spend more time somewhere else. Everything looked great, but taste was just fine and not reflective of the price or plating, but since it's in a hotel and downtown it's more pricey. Going into the hotel itself is not the move ~ you cannot access the bar from their internal elevators unless you're staying there; however, there's an exclusive, exterior elevator that goes to the bar on the left side of the hotel (if you're facing the entryway). Anyone working in the hotel at the lobby desk will direct you where to go if you can't find it. It's kinda hidden. II. SERVICE Hit or miss. Some bartenders don't deck out your beverage with green garnish or fruit. Ours didn't. And our cocktails were very weak. It's disappointing as the customer to see someone order a drink, you get excited seeing it, order it expecting the same, and it comes out clearly half-efforted. I suppose not everyone takes pride in what they do, but I don't want to pay the same price for a lesser experience. III. QUALITY The atmosphere is refreshing and well thought out. At a place that clearly wants to position itself as upscale, this kind of service is inexcusable. It's a shame because the setting and quality of the food and drinks could make Zanzibar a standout.
