I've been taking my car here for years, never a problem... and the price is right. This year it took 3 VISITS!!!!! to Zap smog to get the job done correctly. Ineptitude doesn't go well with EGO. Last year my catalytic converter was stolen, and replaced... I also added a cover. After waiting an hour, Mr. Zavvin was about to finish my smog when he noticed the cover... and said he couldn't see the catalytic converter and I would need to have a shop take the cover off. Instead of just not smogging me and letting me go to a shop with an actual lift so they could SEE the catalytic coverter... he "tampered" my car so I would have to come back to him ( no shop will touch your car once it's tampered)... I took it to another shop with a lift and he was able to tell me the part number in 5 mins...But wouldn't do the smog due to the "tamper". Long story, I had to return to the catalytic converter shop and have the cover taken off. After bringing it back to Mr Zavvin the second time, he told me the part was incorrect and I was being failed... welp he was wrong, AGAIN... he was not reading the part number correctly. An honest human mistake, but i showed him the correct part number the 2nd shop gave me.... Instead of double checking he said NO and that it wasn't correct. My muffler mechanic had to drive the car over to ZAP himself with pictures of the part and proof that the part was correct. He finally passed me, without even an apology. Avoid! read more

I went here for a standard smog test, which I failed. It happens. The man who worked on my car said I failed due to a computer issue and said to fix it I needed to drive the car 200 miles and cold restart it 15 times. He also was adamant not to see a mechanic about it. I tried to explain to the man that I just did a 750 mile road trip and got back a few days before, so I didn't understand what 200 more miles would do, but he refused to acknowledge my concern. I looked online and talked to a lot of people who know more about cars than I do (including the people at the autozone across the street) and everyone agreed these numbers were extremely inflated. By the end of the day my check engine light turned on. I started to become uneasy, especially because he told me to avoid a mechanic. So I took my car to my mechanic. He looked through everything and found that a number of caps and other things had been undone or purposely disconnected, he said that it looked like someone wanted me to fail a smog test (my mechanic did not know about the recent failure). The only people who had access to my car before my mechanic was this smog check place. I tried to call them to ask what happened, but when I asked for a manager or owner, I was hung up on. I get the feeling that because my car has some body damage they thought if I failed a smog check twice they could offer to buy my car for far less than it's worth, but I do not know. I was willing to hear them out and figure out what happened, but by hanging up on me they made me feel that they are definitely shady enough to try this. Also, though it's not my first concern, the coupon they offer does not work. If you don't print it out and bring the paper copy, they won't accept it. Also if you get the coupon emailed to you, it won't be attached. When I tried to ask about it, the man simply repeated "no, you have to print it" a few times. I just gave up. read more

I didn't plan on leaving a review at all, until the owner responded to my private SquareUp comments in just as insulting and combative a manner as he had in person. Hopefully this review saves other people from having to deal with this person. I went for a smog check yesterday. A quick search showed solid reviews, and I came across a coupon on the website. I go in, get my smog. It's a one-man operation; he's gruff, but cordial. He's very busy at the time, so I leave and come back later. After a short wait, he gets started on my smog. He gets it done relatively quickly and informs me he's finished. When I approach his desk, I pull out my phone and inform him that I have a coupon from his website. The man shakes his head and says "No." I asked, "You really aren't going to honor the coupon?" He laughed at me and again said "No." I asked him why not, and he said "You have to print and show it before." I pulled up the website and showed him that all it says is "Must Present smog coupon in Mobile or Print format." So phone should be fine, and nowhere does it mention that I must show it before the smog. He argued with me, talked over me, was rude and aggressive. I've never been so angry with the way someone treated me in my entire life -- I couldn't even get a word in and had to ask him multiple times to let me finish my thought. He told me he was going to give me $5 off; I told him I DIDN'T EVEN CARE ABOUT THE MONEY. The coupon was the least of my issues at this point; it was how rude he was to me and the fact that he didn't even offer up an explanation for why he wasn't going to honor the coupon displayed prominently on his website. After looking through some reviews, I now see that the coupon is effectively a scam he uses to get people in the door, and then he finds different ways to not honor it. He told me no one ever presents the coupon after he does the smog (which was still before I had paid, generally the time I have always presented coupons); if you read through the negative reviews, it's obvious he's a liar. He tried to lecture me about business, constantly repeating the same things over and over. At one point, he stopped me and tried to explain to me how to buy cable TV and internet. It was an unbelievable interaction. All I wanted was to be treated with some modicum of politeness; when I told him as much, he told me he wasn't being rude. I repeated back to him, verbatim, what he said, and he said "Sorry about that but I'm not rude. Some people come in and they say I talk too fast, or I don't listen," and so on. "Do you really think that's an apology?" I asked. He literally explained to me all the rude things he does and how people think they're rude, but that they're not. It was insulting. Apparently everyone who interacts with him is wrong, and he's the correct one. I told him multiple times that I'm not an argumentative, angry person, and that I didn't want to leave him a poor review, I just wanted to be treated with respect. After him interrupting and talking over me some more, I just begged with him to take my money so I could leave this interaction. I'm sure you can guess how many more times he proceeded to interrupt and attack me. I spent well over a decade working in restaurants, and if I ever spoke to a customer the way he spoke to me, I would have been fired on the spot. He was aggressive and obnoxious. I told him multiple times that it wasn't about the money and I don't care if I have to pay full price. If he had been kinder and explained from the get-go how things normally worked, I would have been more understanding. Instead, he was insulting. I received a text from his business asking me about the interaction; I responded with how I felt. I did not plan on making this public. ASSHOLE! Do not give this guy your business. I took my car in and he started the smog process and then after he charged me he told me the car sensors was not ready. He could've done that prior to the entire Check, but he wanted the quick money first. Then he tells me to come back after I drive 50-60 miles... I drove 200. I came back and then again he said the system was not ready. I have no check engine light and the car drives fine. I then asked him if he would allow us to come back after his 14 day retest policy so I could put the 1000 miles he suggested on the car and we would probably be eating the 14 days and he said "it's not my problem". Overall this guy is a typical shady ass automotive industry type.
