Was very excited to try this place after looking everywhere for a pastel de nata as a Celiac, and was disappointed after seeing the hours listed online as "open" that they were permanently closed! A few days later, found that they'd been renamed/located as Bali do Cais, which we did go to and the pastel's were sold out for the day but had some good cookies! Mostly wanted to leave the review here as I'd found this spot on Yelp and don't see an update here of this change so was surprised they were closed - definitely still recommend checking out Bali do Cais next door! read more

We were so grateful to have found a place where we could try the pasteis de nata where there is both a gluten free and a gluten free/vegan option. I wish we would've had time to come more than once! We also saw they serve regular food that is gluten free like pizza and hamburgers. I believe there is also croissant options. read more

I'm SO glad I found this little cafe while on my trip in Lisbon. I really wanted to try pastels de nata, but unfortunately it's made with non gluten free ingredients. When I saw that I could get them here, I made sure to stop on my very first day in Lisbon. I was not disappointed at all. I also ended up getting pizza too! I appreciate that they exist and make GF bakery goodies, but probably some of the worst GF baked goods I have had. I got a plain croissant and a pastel de nata. The croissant was basically just a dry roll and the pastel was flavorless with no real custard texture. Neither taste anywhere near the "real thing." Gluten free people with celiac: go here. You will be...so astounded and grateful! The pasteis de nata were everything I could ask for and gave me an option to not be left out while my fiancé and friends were enjoying their amazing Portuguese desserts. The staff speak English and they are pretty straightforward. Uber will not be able to find this place and drops you off a little past it and around the corner so don't be disheartened just get out and walk around the block. The five stars are for the quality and selection of the food. The ambience is not fancy: it's almost like an NYC deli bakery feel with an option to eat at cafeteria style tables inside or street facing tables outside. But who cares, since it serves delicious, freshly baked gluten free desserts that would otherwise be lost on a traveler experiencing Portugal for the first time! I mean I had to try the nata even tho I'm now GF so I searched for this place and left the hotel early to have it while my fam was still sleeping. It was was pretty good for GF and the egg part was also dairy free so it covers all allergies. Yeah... I may be gluten free, but I'm not willing to sacrifice flavor to eat something. The day we came in there was no bread at all. My choices were very small. I did try their Pastel de Nata. I couldn't understand what the big deal was. My partner said it didn't taste at all like a regular one. It was soggy and oily, with the crust being gummy. The counter service was very nice. My Portuguese is ok, but there was some pointing at menu items, and pulling out google translate. :) We ordered a pizza and ate a couple of pieces. It had basically the same flavor and texture of a decent gf frozen pizza. I wouldn't go back. read more

There are so many beautiful and delicious looking pastries in Portugal that it kind of makes you want to cry when you realize you can't eat any of them because you're allergic like me. Luckily, after reading many celiac blogs, I found this place! They offer many gluten free options for celiac diners and clearly mark what is gluten free and what's not in their display case. They also have some savory options if you want to have a meal there as well! I got an almond croissant, a chocolate croissant, some pasteis de nata and this pastry with cream on the inside that reminded me of malasadas that you get in Hawaii. How I wish I had a Zarzuela in Oakland. I know we have Mariposa, but, Zarzuela makes Mariposa look sooo pedestrian next to it. Gluten free pastries I have dreamed about for 14 years! I had just landed, and made a B-line for Zarzuela. I had their Pastel da Nata and a cafe' largo. I killed it in about two minutes. So, I had to wash it down with an eclair and a cafe'. Granted, I was over caffeinated, and full on gluten free pastries, but oh so happy. I mean, isn't eating a big part of what you go to Portugal for? ;) Celiacs and those with gluten intolerance will be happy here. read more

Found this place on yelp and wanted to give it a go. The waiters/owner were not really friendly. They didn't look you in the eye and didn't say a word, just some nodding. That was kind of off-putting. The place itself is not cozy, typical white lightening and iron chairs. I had a gluten free tosta which was nice and a gluten free pasteis de Belém. The pasteis was very sweet but quiet okay. It's nice they give attention to people with allergies but a smile and some kind words would do miracles. read more

Unbelievable assortment of delicious gluten-free pastries. Some are even vegan. The pastel de nata is to die for. Go early otherwise they may run out of most things - my wife made me go there at the end of the afternoon and there was very few items left, which attest to the freshness of the pastries. For only take-away is Zarzuela a great place to buy food, when you're on a certain diet. Unfortunately is the restaurant part or Zarzuela a bit disappointing. The toilets were disgusting and the seats were not confortable for example. After all the staff was very friendly. read more

These guys have gone above and beyond to offer healthy and allergy-conscious offerings in addition to traditional pastries. If it's a hot day and it's your first time in Lisbon it's worth a stop for a solid coffee and fresh juice made with organic fruits and veggies. Amazing! The best gluten free I have had in Europe! All pastries, pizza, waffles, everything you could want gluten free they have!

I stumbled upon Zarzuela on my walk down to the train station. Being gluten and lactose intolerant I hadn't had any breakfast yet as I hadn't found anything I would be able to safely eat. I was just going to eat a protein bar on the train out to the beach... however then I walked past Zarzuela. Right in the window it has signs for gluten free and lactose free. It looked like a cake shop, but then I saw they also have an incredible menu. I went in and had a lactose free chocolate and banana milkshake as well as gluten free muesli with lactose free yoghurt an fresh fruit. I also bought a loaf of bread to take away. I was so impressed with the place I went back that evening for a late lunch/early dinner with my family. I had a gluten free turkey burger, which was delicious and a freshly squeezed juice, also delicious. My family had omelets and toasted sandwiches. They have lots of gluten free, lactose free and sugar free treats. The staff are lovely and I got the impression it's a family run business. Very impressed. I would've gone back again and again if I'd stayed longer in Lisbon! read more
