Service was terrible by the owner/manager. I bought a pair of sunglasses the day prior, put them on and they were crooked on my face. Normally I don't care, but I hate when glasses are crooked, especially new- and they were a 70 dollar pair. I thought a simple exchange wouldn't be too big of a challenge, and stood corrected. I went to exchange them and the owners proceeded to tell me they were not crooked and that they were scratched now so they can't exchange. They had no visible scratches and the store manager was extremely condescending in front of her staff and other customers, placing them on the counter for a demonstration I didn't ask for. I politely expressed I would walk out of the store with my crooked glasses to avoid such a silly situation. The manager or owner even preceded to laugh in my face as I explained the issue, and made it extremely difficult to even get the pair of sunglasses back from them after I said it was no problem. I have shopped here for years for gifts and jewelry for myself and my family/ friends. The store has beautiful products, and friendly counter staff. God please forbid anyone has to deal with the store owner/manager. Truly the worst customer service experience. read more

I want to support local Business but I suggest you spend your money elsewhere. With $250 in merchandise in hand to purchase and the need to quickly try a shirt on I was told the dressing rooms were closed. There was literally a girl sitting and doing nothing in the dressing room section with little item counters to hand out like I was at Marshall's. My daughter was crushed. The store wasn't even closing for 15min. Super judgmental staff that was more concerned with getting out early than with making money. Not a local feel. This shop and tie attitude should be in a strip mall in Downtown LA and not on 41st in Santa Cruz county . I hope they close so a better, local vibe place can open. Zen Island is a bummer. Their window displays are cute and they have a lot of cute stuff BUT it's insanely overpriced. They *do* have a decent clearance section so I'd suggest waiting on that if you want something. They clothing is stuff you'd find at a site like Lulus, except it way more expensive. The home goods are the same....one time I did a basic google of a few items and there were other boutiques with the same stuff for cheaper. I dunno, maybe their rent is expensive here? I've had similar service experiences as others. When I come in alone, dressed cute I get better service. I've come in in sweats and a hat with my kids and I don't get spoken to at all. It does seem very much like they treat trendy young girls better and they treat people who look like they have money better. One time I was in and I found a really cute matching sweats outfit I wanted my husband to get me for my birthday. However, I knew I'd have to be VERY specific when telling him what to get, so I called to store to ask the brand and make sure my size was still in stock. They refused to tell me the brand over the the phone and were SUPER weird and rude about it. There was no way I was going to risk sending my hubs in without specific info so....they lost that sale. I don't mind going in and looking around when my boys are shopping in the board shop next door, but I don't buy things here anymore. I don't like giving money for crappy service. read more

Love it! It was my first time here with my teenage daughter and the two ladies working were very kind and helpful!! My daughter was able to find gifts for her friends and have them gift wrapped as well. I found a REALLY COOL pair of cheetah print pants and they fit amazing! Cute little beach themed boutique in Capitola. I stopped by here today and was impressed with the selection of cute clothes and fun gifts they sell. They have a little something for everyone. Clothes, toys and home decor items to name a few. The clothes section was well stocked with cute jackets, dresses, sweaters, t shirts and accessories. Everything looked like it was very good quality, however it was all pretty pricey. Zen used to be the place to go, but it has turned into a cheap, teen ran shop with overly priced and poorly made clothing. I went in to purchase a gift with my two young children when four of the teens were working, blasting music that said the F word and N word every other sentence. I am local and have been coming here for years not only for myself, but for gifts as well. Today was my last day supporting this shop. read more

Today I had someone help me named genie or something and had the absolute worst customer service I came in last year and the experience was great. genie was disgustingly rude and now will never come back. The clothes are so cheap looking and overpriced. The style is so not in. Employees are very rude and know absolutely nothing about the store. Jewelry is cheap and breaks easily, I've had many local friends complain about the quality of zen. I'm really disappointed with a local shop being this unprofessional. As you suggested, I guess the woman who "helped" me yesterday was one of your great managers. So you are basically saying I was being locked by accident. Fine, I believe you. But this does not change the fact that the manager was very unfriendly. If they were not unfriendly and rude in the beginning, I would not assume that the manager locked me in. I would indeed assume it's an accident. Also, if you look over the reviews. I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO EXPERIENCED RACISM IN THIS STORE. Please go to Yelp and you can see there are many reviews complaining about how unprofessional, rude the staff are towards the people of color. And I was stuck, at first I thought it's just the door got stuck, but I realized that THE STORE OWNER LOCKED ME IN THE FITTING ROOM. I found it so humiliating. I mean seriously??? I know it's a lot of clothes to try on at once for a small shop, but try them separately and lock me in the fitting room??? They could have told me the maximum try amount is 3 and I would totally understand. She gave me a feeling that I would not buy the clothes and maybe would even steal them. I'm a petite Asian so most of the clothes there don't fit me well. (The style of the store is totally for the tall white girls, the shop owner is a tall white women). I dressed super casual and wore my glasses so it's not the type of customer they wanted to have. The store just gives me a vibe that if you are not a tall white skinny girl then don't come in. It's BITCHY & RACIST. I ended up buying 4 clothes from them (because I'm leaving today and didn't have time to shop at other places) and I can see the store owner's attitude got a bit better. Before she was super cold, unfriendly and mean (her face almost was telling me I don't you want in my store). Maybe the shop owner should take some time to reflect on the name of the the store. Does it really deserve to be called ZEN island? Or maybe just an island for all the tall white snooty girls. read more

I didn't want to write this review but feel compelled to warn others about Zen's draconian return/exchange policy. I'm a senior with 6 granddaughters and 3 daughter-in-laws. I live in Capitola and the girls (who live out of the area) are always thrilled to receive a gift from Zen. I shopped early (you know how we seniors are!) for my oldest granddaughter's graduation gift. Girl behind the counter was friendly and helped me select a necklace ($58) and matching bracelet ($50). Unfortunately, my granddaughter didn't really like the choice I made but I told her I'd return for a store credit so that she could visit Zen and choose what she liked. I was shocked and appalled, Zen would not allow the return (it was after the two-week return period) even though the pieces were obviously never worn with original tags in place. I didn't ask for a refund, only a store credit. I have spent many hundreds of dollars in that store and was truly disappointed by this hostile treatment. I'm stuck with $108 worth of tween jewelry because Zen would not accommodate a reasonable request from a faithful customer. Enough said; I am chagrined that Zen can no longer be my go-to store for gifting the girls. Up-date to this review: Zen management immediately reached out to resolve this experience. I should, and do, apologize to the store for my cranky review. It really is an awesome store with amazing coastal inventory. Shop there for the best beach gifts - I will continue to do so. read more
