The Spicy Shrimp broth had that perfect kick without completely torching your face (I got it "medium" spicy and it was spot-on). Tons of plump shrimp, soft-boiled egg cooked perfectly, and the noodles had great texture. My partner stole half my bowl, so that tells you everything. The Rock and Roll roll was a total highlight--crispy shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy mayo, and that sweet eel sauce drizzle on top... it's basically disappeared in 60 seconds. So disappointing but I imagine it depends what you get. The Spicy Gyoza was pretty good...in fact almost too spicy for even me. The bulgogi ramen was so the huge disappointment. Broth was decent. Noodles were decent...but how can you call this Bulgogi? Just because it is a similar cut, they put unmarinated beef that wasn't even very thin on top....absolutely no flavor and bland as dirt. If you can't do marinating of bulgogi to place on top, don't do Korean style and stick to just the Japanese options. The marinated boiled egg also sucked with very little pickling flavor and almost over cooked like this supposed to be. By the way, I am from Hawaii and know my Ramen and how Japanese, Korean, or Asian fusion styles should be...and this was very mediocre. read more

The boba is standard, not as good as my usual place, the taste of the sushi, according to my boyfriend, got old very fast and it was hard to finish a roll because of it. I ordered a bulgogi poke bowl and compared to my usual order somewhere else it was lacking. It had big portions but everything else about it got old after a few bites just like the sushi. The crab salad is like... riced and it's unpleasant, the bulgogi was so bland and grey. The sauces tasted bad too. The only thing we liked was the pork buns, but even they were only a 7 out of ten to me. One of my favorite spots in the Gainesville area! Our waitress Sunny, was wonderful. Very professional and attentive. She knew what she was talking about on the menu and took so good care of us. Came in for lunch. Honestly a quite disappointing experience from my two prior visits. My options here are already limited because of the lack of available vegan options. I was super excited about getting the veg sushi burrito, deep fried. Just like I've had it twice before. Upon ordering, I'm told that they can't deep fry it. I asked why, waitress doesn't know. No problem, I ask her to have the manager come over. I was told that they can't make the veg burrito fried because it messes up the oil? Huh? What about it messes with the oil? It has the same ingredients as the burritos with meat in them. Simply annoyed. Meanwhile, another person on my party ordered the 985 sushi. She said that it was soggy and tasted really fishy. She returned it and asked for it to be removed from her check since she had only taken a bite out of it. This is coming from a person who never returns anything. The waitress had the audacity to guilt trip her and tell her that if she returned it she would have to pay for it out of her pocket. WHAT? I really feel like we're being pranked at this point. This was kind of a disappointment to us unfortunately. I had bulgogi ramen which was decent but the bulgogi was thick and chewy not thinly shaved. My husband had the bulgogi sushi burrito but he said the seaweed wrap made it smell fishy. Combined with the meat just did not mix right. They only have sake and beer right now. The server was nice but my ramen came out way after everyone else's food so I felt like I was eating alone and I hate feeling like everyone is waiting on me to finish so I couldn't enjoy my food. We were excited to try this ramen shop and loved the sushi burrito concept! The menu had 3 variations of ramen (tonkotsu, shoyu, vampire), sushi burritos and sushi poke bowls with different proteins - there were helpful photos of most of the dishes in the menu. The portions are huge, the prices are reasonable and the waitstaff is attentive. We really appreciated the huge glasses of ice water - we never understand when a restaurant provides teeny glasses of water because it will just mean more work for the waitstaff to keep refilling them. We ordered appetizers: the seaweed salad, edamame and fried pork gyoza to start - all were good. We realized only later it would have been a little cheaper to order the gyoza as an add on to our ramen $4.50 for 5pcs vs. $6 for 6pcs. We also ordered bulgogi beef poke bowl, shoyu ramen atomic bomb chicken, shoyu ramen bulgogi, shoyu ramen (fried) shrimp and a firecracker spicy tuna sushi burrito without cream cheese. Unfortunately, the ramen and poke bowl were average tasting - mostly the protein wasn't very flavorful. I like Zen Ramen's sushi burritos the most at this point. I like their ramen, but it's not the best I've had and I feel like it slipped a little since the beginning. Slight changes in their broth. Milder, maybe? I do like their spicy broths the best. The chasu pork isn't very tender. It's good, but a truly tender melt-in-your-mouth piece will stick with you... Probably literally as well as figuratively. But the sushi burritos are really good and unexpected. I like the variety of things you can get in them, the Wasabi mayo, the subtle warmth. Had a nice kick. The nachos were tasty, however not layered. Once you made it through the toppings, you're just left with un-warmed tortilla chips. The salmon was in some smaller and some larger chunks, and my husband wished they had all been of similar size and had a little lemon or lime juice added to them. Hubby ordered bulgogi ramen. He didn't love the broth and the meat had a lot of connective tissues, which was unappealing. He also said the broth smelled a bit like dog food. Every menu item here is good, including of course their sushi burrito. They recently added new menu items which I think will do VERY well. Their Ramen, sushi and appetizers always hit the spot and every time I bring someone here to try it out, they are impressed. Peak hours can get busy so be smart about when you atop by so you're not left waiting long for a table. Their staff is friendly and have never mixed any of our orders, always on point which I appreciate. May be tough for larger groups as the area is semi small and tables may be tough for a group of more than 4. Gainesville parking is tough around the square BUT they have the new decks all around now so you should he able to park with no issue followed by a short walk. Honestly I came Zen Ramen & Sushi Burrito with pretty tempered expectations considering this was a chain restaurant in a smaller town. I ended up ordering the white truffle chicken shoyu ramen. Ramen had a nice hint of truffle flavor, not too overpowering. Although broth was a little on the salty end. The chicken karaage was more flaky than crunchy, but cooked perfectly. Overall these are fairly minor critiques and I thoroughly enjoyed my bowl of ramen. I'd definitely come back here to try their other items. In terms of COVID precautions, they have a barely functioning thermometer that's supposed to read your wrist. Although honestly I don't put much faith in any of the door thermometers. Was surprised how crowded it was and it stayed crowded the whole time we were there. There were so many options I wanted to try but had to start with what grabbed my attention to start with, a sushi burrito. I ordered the OMG burrito that has shrimp, scallops and spicy tuna in it and it was amazing. They also have a pretty good drink deal where you can mix and match saki, draft Sapporo or any other draft beer, three of those and it's only 12 bucks. Pretty hard to beat that drink deal.
