This place used to be pretty good but after this last trip I will not be back. If you order off the menu odds are the sushi will be good, I absolutely do not recommend taking anything off the conveyor belt like we did. First off they don't label what is on the belt so you have to guess what it is you are eating. There isn't any kind of time stamp on any of the items on the belt which should have been my first clue not to take anything. The first roll I tried the fish was warm like it had been out for awhile. So like a dummy I tried a few more items because I was really hungry and everything I tried was underwhelming and warm! Warm raw fish is just not tasty! :( The prices are pretty high as well for the quality you are getting. The only redeeming quality of my visit this last time was the server. Great service, delicious food. Came in on a Sunday about 12 noon, and it looked like we were the first ones in there. Immediately greeted by the sushi chefs. And then the host brought us to a big booth with a nice window view. Server then promptly greeted us and took our drink order--nothing fancy: coffee and water. I could tell all the sushi that was going by the conveyor belt was fresh. The hot items were still hot and gathering steam under the lids. Unfortunately I can't comment on the quality of the sushi. But it all looked so amazing! I was with a hardcore vegan who shamed me into ordering the teriyaki dish, but with no chicken--just veg. Delicious! And they were incredibly accommodating to our strict vegan requests. I do wonder one thing: We warned that the miso soup wasn't vegan because there's a fish paste or sauce or something in it, and yet it's marked on the menu as being vegetarian...? Sushi, conveyer belt, and happy hour is what you would likely expect going to Zen sushi bar. A fun and great place to hang out witn friends and a fun way to experience Japanese cuisine. The idea of choosing what sushi to try and just randomly picking one is fun, but Zen recently removed all the labels they put alongside their sushi, so you will find yourself asking your server what it is your picking up with your chopsticks. Happy hour is also a plus, but having to wait until 9 is a little tedious especially if you have no intention of staying long, but with happy hour they knock off $1 for every plate you pick up from the conveyer belt. They also have a seperate bar area if you want something a little stronger to drink. They also gove the customers the option to order items not on the conveyer belt. If you ever visit, try ordering a bottle of Ramune (japanese soda) and have fun figuring out how to open it :) read more

Bellingham is not the best place to go out for Sushi in general, especially being a vegetarian. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Zen Sushi. They have a full vegetarian menu, with unique veggie rolls and not just the same old avacado roll and such. Their Zen Roll is amazing. The service was fine, they aren't too attentive, but being that it's a sushi belt you tend not to need the servers as much. I do not recommend this place. None of the food was very good quality. I ordered a spicy tempura roll because there wasn't any on the conveyer belt and it was the grossest sushi i've ever had. I'm not exaggerating. It tasted like expired salsa. My mom tried it and she is not a picky eater and she almost gagged. The other food (not sushi) was fine but definitely not the best quality. I also wish they put the item name on the container. Bellingham has some much better sushi places that i recommend you read the reviews for on yelp. I visited Zen Sushi for lunch with some coworkers. We each had 4 plates of sushi, which at first might sound like a lot, but that is about the equivalent of 1 and a half to 2 regular sized sushi rolls at the non-conveyor type sushi restaurants. As far as conveyor belt sushi goes, this sushi is about average. Very similar to the other conveyor belt sushi in town (Kuru Kuru), in fact if you were to just watch the conveyor belt, at least 80% of what you see would be identical between the two conveyor belt sushi restaurants. They do have a menu that you can order other items however I only had food off the conveyor belt. If I return I will have to try some of their "off the menu" food to see if it is better. The giant Buddha is really cool, and certainly adds to the atmosphere. One thing that was really odd was the tea. With three of us having lunch on a cold and windy day we all ordered tea. Most places would have given us a tea pot with 3 cups, however at Zen they gave us 3 tea pots and 3 cups, we each had a charge of $3.50 on our separate checks for tea, which was a surprise. This style seems very wasteful of tea pots, and of our lunch budget. If you are ordering tea you might want to ask how much it costs, and how many tea pots you are getting. read more

A a couple friends and myself went there the other night to have dinner before seeing a movie next door. The service and food was good. The staff was friendly, as well as the sushi cook. He had a sense of humor and made me laugh. That's always a plus for me. The house sake was very good, and served at the perfect temperature (~100 F). Between the three of us, it was a very reasonable price (especially including the alcohol). Even though I love RAW Sushi, Sashimi, and Nigiri, I have to recommend that you try their Dragon rolls. They were very tasty. Of course everything else was excellent as well, but that's the one that caught my taste buds, even though I'm usually fond of spicy tuna. OMG... Why would I expect really fresh tasting sushi on Tuesday December 26th when their last shipment would have been Friday if Lucky? I threw out the Hamachi hand roll and the caterpillar roll. I rarely go out for sushi so I'm not the person to ask about quality of ingredients or comparable businesses in the area, but I was very happy when I walked away from this restaurant. The prices were reasonable, the sake selection was quality, and you walked away feeling like you received more than what you paid for, or more than what you would get at a typical hole-in-the-wall sushi place. The flow of the restaurant was peaceful and relaxed, the atmosphere was simple yet modern, and the staff was very helpful. There could have been more variation in the plates and artistic vision within the maki. However, we were the last patrons in the establishment at the time, so the better quality rolls were probably nabbed a few hours earlier. The restaurant was clean and the waitress was really helpful. I was overwhelmed by the plate system on the conveyor belt, but to each his own. Some sushi was really good and some was lack luster. I recommend ordering something special off the menu because it will cost the same as picking up a plate. The only difference is that you have it wait (sometimes a while) rather than instant gratification. It's a good place to go with someone you already know, but I found it really overwhelming for meeting up with people I wanted to chat with. The sushi is ok, with the print so tiny on the identification menu that you kind of just pick something that looks good and hope for the best. It may just have been a bad night when we went (it was a Saturday), but we ordered something off the menu about halfway through our meal and it took nearly forty minutes to arrive.
