I wanted to try the place before I took anyone there. Friends said it was good. I was impressed with the interior decor. That's about all. I wanted to buy both a roll of choice and an entree to go. The only way to do that at a reasonable price is the Bento box. I've never ordered one. The first drawback is that I was limited to four pieces of only a California roll with a choice of entre. Four pieces is fine but I wish I could have a choice of roll. They need to do something to keep the roll from getting hot when packaged in a to-go order. I had to put it in the freezer to get it cold. I may be wrong, but I think the California Rolls for the Bento must be premade since that is what goes into the Bento and who know when The rice was really dry. The box also comes with rice, two gyoza, tempura shrimp and vegetables, miso soup and a salad. Quite a bit of food. I don't like miso, so I told them not to pack it. The gyoza was fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think tempura batter should be seasoned for flavor. This was totally without flavor. Dipping sauce is needed and I guess that is what the soy sauce if for. I'm not a fan of soy sauce so I also guess I shouldn't be ordering tempura. But seems like I have experienced good tasing tempura. I ordered pork teriyaki as my entree. There was plenty, but it was very dry. Again, I may be wrong, but shouldn't teriyaki have enough sauce to dampen your rice, of which there was not enough to go with the dry pork. It's nice to see the downtown Blaine area grow, and we were excited to try this spot. It hasn't been open for very long, so I'm sure there are some growing pains, and I do think it's quite the step up from the sister restaurant in Ferndale. It's big, clean, and bright with lovely views over the water, and parking is pretty easy. We started with some appetizers of gyoza, crab rangoon, and edamame. You can't go wrong! Everything was nice and hot, and crispy when needed. Miso soup came out and it was a bit different, but still solid. I am a sushi addict and have no self control around it, so while my friends ordered one roll each, I opted for the Umi Box with a tuna roll, and a specialty unagi roll. We did a share share that's fair, and it was all pretty decent. Some of the tops of my nigiri were a little stringy, but that's usually due to chance. It's hard to compare with some of the best (and super cheap) sushi 20 min from the door, over in BC, but for places in Whatcom, I think it has a lot of potential and is a lot nicer than others in the area. That being said, you definitely pay for it. Sushi, in general, is just SO expensive in the states compared to Canada, so be prepared. I am ending with service because that can truly make or break a meal, and it definitely makes it. Our server was Amara, with Jordan and "Boss Man" making stops to drop food or to check on us. It wasn't super crowded, but it made the experience really pleasant and personal. I'm glad to support a small business. read more

I am changing my 3 star to a 5 star review! I took my daughter in and we tried lots of food. We also sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chef Jay was amazing and super friendly. All the food was amazing. The bento box is impressive and plentiful.. I liked the flavor of everything! My daughter was extremely impressed.. She even ordered fried rice to take home.. Not sure why there appear to be 2 instances of this business and location on Yelp with split reviews. The other has a.much lower rating. Anyways, this restaurant is a disappointment. While the food is quite pricey, too many dishes are non traditional style Japanese dishes not well prepared, and made with low quality and/ or lower priced ingredients. While it would be great to have excellent or even just good Japanese food on the US side of the border near the border, it may be better to have nothing than this. read more

The wife was there for lunch and got me a takeout teriyaki meal. She ordered a beef/chicken combo, and beef was all that was in the clamshell when opened. The best teriyaki I've had was at a Seattle Japanese place in Chinatown. There, the beef was sliced near paper-thin, and cooked in or with the sauce. This was not that. The beef here was sliced rather thickly and kind of granular, and with a fair amount of gristle. Several bites could not be chewed up and ended up in the dog dish. Even if gristly, slicing it very thin makes the chewing manageable. As seems to be the general situation, in restaurants, there was enough meat there to reasonably feed two or three people. It would be so much better if they would reduce the meat portion and reduce the price accordingly. They could maintain the same profit by doing so. The "salad" was only iceberg lettuce with some kind of white dressing that tasted off and was not used. In Japan, I was never served a side salad of iceberg; it was always cabbage, and with a vinegar-based dressing, never white goop. This is another standard problem with most stateside "Japanese" restaurants. Cabbage is more nutritious, authentic, toothsome and does not cost any more than iceberg lettuce. Ditto for the dressing choice. Unfortunate choices. Today I went to eat my wife's leftover "orange chicken" for dinner. Now, I'm a thrifty guy, waste not and all that. She brought it home because she could not chew it at the restaurant. This is now just a day later with a night in the refrigerator, so no real time for the chicken to become mummified, but the little chunks of breaded chicken were closer to visibly grainy leather than what one would expect from meat represented as chicken. I mean, gnarly hard to chew, and only then in little bites. Now that I did my duty, I've got chicken fibers stuck in my teeth to deal with. Seriously, almost inedible. As to the "orange" part, there was no trace of that flavor or saucing that I could detect. My wife's friend had phờ, which was allegedly pretty good. These issues seem to be a part of Asian-Fusion restaurants in general. They may cover their menu reasonably well, but are outstanding at nothing, and are frequently run by someone of a different cultural background than the nationality of the food they offer. I loved going out in Japan, where little shops with only a dozen counter seats or so would specialize in one or a very limited scope of dishes, all related, and would be an outstanding experience, usually at a reasonable price. read more

It's not mind-blowingly epic sushi but I'm glad to welcome them to our sleep little town. It's clean, fast, friendly and good sushi. They have a large menu. Since we've only eaten here twice we have a lot of items left to try but both visits have had tasty premium rolls. Tonight's Dancing Albacore and Killer Salmon were quite good. Love the thinly sliced lemon on top! Normally we would like to eat out on the sidewalk under the umbrella, but the road construction isn't finished yet. read more

First time trying this new sushi restaurant in Blaine and, except for lack of ambiance, it was an excellent meal! We had a yellowtail sushi roll, miso soup, a nigiri bento box and saki. Large menu selection from sushi to teriyaki and pho. I had unagi roll and shrimp pho -- both were presented well and tasted good. My friends had sushi and pho as well, they too were pleased with the flavors. We ate everything and had to take half the pho to go due to the ample portions. Service was good, sweet people working there. Ambiance, well the windows give and excellent view of Drayton Harbor and B.C.. That said, the flooring and chairs could be better. There is an electronic ordering system, which wasn't as intuitive as it could be but we managed to place our orders just fine. Final thoughts, while it wasn't an outstanding experience, I'll definitely return for dine in or take out. Prices are a little higher than I had expected but I would recommend to locals. read more

Wife and I stopped in for lunch on Saturday, I had the beef Pho, she has the poke bowl. Both were awesome but the poke bowl has exemplary. So much seafood and delicious. Our server was friendly and efficient, the owner behind the counter came out and greeted us. Nicest guy! I highly recommend Ttowa, will be back very soon. I tried the beef teriyaki bento box. The presentation was very appealing and all of the various items were very tasty. Having lived and worked in Japan, I am somewhat used to the Japanese way that they prepare specific items. The bento box comes with gyoza(pot stickers) which are deep fried, I prefer pan fried as prepared that way they are sticky. Hence the American description pot stickers. The prawn and vegetable tempura was nice as was the sushi. I was provided a small cup of soy sauce for dipping the sushi, gyoza and tempura. But in Japan, three different dipping sauces are provided, one different for each item. So that could improve if you're looking for authenticity. Although most people haven't had my experience so none of this may matter. My wife had the shrimp teriyaki, but only because she prefers her chicken teriyaki to be white breast meat. But only dark thigh meat is available. I will go again, as everything we had was fresh and very delicious. I would like it even more if my suggestions were implemented. we were very happy to see a new sushi restaurant come to Blaine our first time in, my wife ordered a california roll which she said was ok, I felt it was bland and boring, i had an eel roll which again was rather tasteless, so that was a few days ago, so we thought we would give them another shot and went back tonight, this time we thought we might order the wok dishes, the pictures looked very good, my wife being gluten free ordered the almond chicken and for myself i ordered Kung pow chicken which also looked pretty good on the menu and then to share we had the chicken fried rice well the chicken fried rice came first the rice was ok but chicken looked and tasted like it was precooked and then cooked again with the rice it was hard and dry then our main dishes came out and we thought there was a mistake our dishes looked exactly alike except my so called kung pow had some chopped peanuts on the to and my wife's almond chicken had a few slices of almonds on top we questioned the order and were told the pictures and the food do not they are there just go reference and we told them they tasted the we were told they use the same brown sauce on both of them now we travel a lot and have never heard of anything like this it looked like they get these breaded chicken chunks some food service vendor like sisco are some thing similar through them otto a deep fryer and pour the same sauce on them and then sprinkle a few crushed peanuts on top and walla we have kung pow or the same dish and sprinkle a few sliced almonds on top now through the magic of bull sh@@ we almond chicken now the place was packed probably with first timers are people on holiday but if they want to stay here for any time they may want to change their ways the tourists are only here for a couple of months then winter sets it and you have to relay on local return business and the Blaine and Birch Bay people what the real thing and we all know there are several good asia restaurant right across the bay i white rock now i'd rather spend my money here locally but i do insist on quality i probably won't be back for a third disappointment read more

Staff, friendly and well-intentioned. The food? I don't want to say it is the worst attempt at serving food ever since I might remember something worse if I try. Also, compared to sushi bars across the border in Canada---more expensive and considerably inferior. Awesome sushi! We got the Red Dragon roll and the Waikiki roll and both were very fresh and delicious. We all agreed the Waikiki was the better tasting of the two and would get it again along with trying some other options. Ordered the bento box and their sashimi was on point. So delicious, chilled, and fresh! Salmon sashimi is usually my favorite but the hamachi sashimi won out for sure. So soft and buttery. The tempura shrimp and veggies tasted phenomenal, it was all so good! Honestly better than anything we've had in Whatcom County (and we've been to seven different restaurants). I'd say it's on par with some really good Canadian sushi places we like to go to. Glad to have a local option for some amazing sushi to dine in. I honestly can't wait to go back! We also got the crab rangoon, gyoza, and miso soup which came with the bento box. All were good and tasted like what you would get at any sushi place. Wish I took some photos the dishes all came out plated so nicely and everything was super fast. We'll be back for sure! read more
