Zen is a place I have been wanting to try for a while. I stopped because I did not want to get started on a traffic filled commute. I tried what i would call a sampler platter. I was surprised the sushi was good. The salmon was super fresh. I spent over $40.00 and left pretty hungry. LOL. I would guess that a "foodie" like me would have to spend at least 75.00 to have the meal that i would want. Its a super casual place and for a local sushi I guess in order to survive all these type places have hiked their prices so they can pay their rent. Just had take out from here for the first time. For the price paid, the food was awful. I've never had grilled salmon that was this greasy before. The teriyaki sauce wouldn't even stick to the fish as it was just saturated with some canola oil. Ffs even the rice was stale & tasted at least day old. Fruit that came with the bento was abysmal; pineapple and melon was just bits of rinds & orange was spoiled. I could go on, about the other items, but it is the same story. Don't like leaving bad reviews, but for the price I paid, I feel ripped off. I think if you're charging ~$20 for a bento, it should be edible- this was not. read more

My first time here on a Saturday! I guess it was remodeled but it looks great on the inside. It's very big and seems like a great place to hold big groups and family gatherings. We ordered quite a few dishes for dinner: - Chicken wings - they were surprisingly good since I don't usually order wings at an Asian restaurant, but they were crispy, seasoned well w/ garlic and spices, and not scrawny. Plenty of protein leftover. - Ordered a few seafood items, that really just blew me out of the water: a. Oysters on the half shell - MY GOD these were so meaty and tasty! They honestly reminded me of Half Moon Bay quality which is really saying something (Barbara's Fishtrap if you bay area folks know!) b. 24 piece Sashimi plate - fish was amazing. Didn't taste frozen at all - just fresh! I really recommend this dish if you're feeling raw fish!! c. We ordered one of their specialty tuna rolls that I cannot recall the name of.... But it's pictured here w/ tobiko (flying fish roe) on it. It's quite bomb. Parking - not a problem. It's in the back and seems plenty. Overall, I love the food here. Haven't been here since they closed down years ago. It was okay back then. Today, it did not disappoint. It's far from fancy, but I love that they have foods from several Asian countries. It's taken on a "hole in the wall atmosphere" which is kind of a bummer. The food was very flavorful, better than the average Asian restaurant. I've ordered takeout from Zen Sushi on two separate occasions and boy am I pleased! Not only is the sushi of great quality (for a rather affordable price) but customer service is definitely up to par. I'm always greeted politely on the phone and when I pick-up my order (which is always ready at the estimated time) they treat me with a lot of respect and hospitality. I usually order the Crazy Lunch Combo A, which comes with Chef's choice of 5 piece sushi and a specialty roll. I've tried the heart attack and blackjack. I'd opt for the heart attack because it has more of a fresh feel to it (spicy tuna inside and albacore on the outside with ponzu(?) sauce). The salmon sushi is delightful, albacore and tuna tying in at second place. The rice to sushi ratio is also very much appreciated. They are not holding back with their cuts. There just isn't anything actually memorable about this place that would ever make me go back again, unless MAYBE if I wanted to try their jja jjang myun. Food (from best to worst): 1. Spicy Tuna sushi: it's decent, but has sort of an aftertaste that's slightly bitter. 2. Sushi combo plate($22): half of the sushi were good, and the other half was terrible. Good ones included albacore, octopus and salmon. The bad ones were the unagi, uni and shrimp- simply not fresh at all and that's the basic necessity for sashimi! :( 3. House special beef($13.95): this is the sizzling hot plate dish that usually never goes wrong... But it definitely went sadly wrong here. The moment I took the first bite I knew it was the sauce that messed up the dish; too sweet. This is not genuine Chinese food- completely Americanized. The meat was cooked to have a rubbery consistency. Too expensive for Chinese food that's worse than Panda Express. And the sushi wouldn't keep me coming back. To top it off, service was incredibly slow for an empty night at the restaurant. Well it's my fourth time eating here in 18 months. I'm thinking management has changed. My first visit was great. The second was tarnished by the restaurant refusing to honor a coupon that I just gotten THAT day on my grocery receipt. The reason I was there w others. The shared items were much better than individual dinners. Third time I got an very expensive soft shell crab roll that was nothing but rice and a tiny bit of flaked crab. The fourth time I went during lunch and chose a combo of tempura shrimp roll and squid roll. Reasonably priced but Both were mushy and mostly tasteless. We needed a meal on the later side last night, as we were coming from the Enchanted event at Descanso Gardens, which was really lovely. We had a party of 9. I am writing this review based on my personal opinion and experience. The menu situation was very confusing as the prices were all blocked out and their "scan to order" system didn't work. So, basically, you had no idea how much anything was. The waiter was trying to be very helpful with suggestions and he helped me decide on the Mongolian Beef dish. It arrived very quickly, like in 3 minutes... which I don't know how that happened. It was a little light on actual meat, but did taste good. When I was into the last 3rd of the dish, I pulled a large hair, like a foot long, out of the remaining amount, which obviously is pretty unpleasant. I am not a person who is shy about stating my displeasure with something or asking for something to be made right. But due to the company I was with, I didn't want to make a scene in this particular group. If I had just been with my wife, it would have been another story. So, I didn't say anything, but this literally left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Now, back to the menu pricing... since I had no idea what I was spending. I ordered delivery from Zen Sushi & Seafood Restaurant. I ordered a Hawaiian Roll, Orange Chicken, War Wonton Soup, and Garlic Edemame. That came to about $55, not counting tip. The tuna was old and tasteless and a bit mushy. The Orange Chicken seemed to be a day old, chewy, and a bit dry. Wonton Soup was ok. They included napkins, soy sauce, and chop sticks.
