Recently a company connected with Dominion contacted my husband and me to offer a home energy…read morereview and estimate on weatherizing our house in time to take advantage of the tax credits available until the end of the year. Since we did not know enough to evaluate the proposal he provided after his review, we talked with someone we knew who was volunteering with a climate advocacy group in this area. He suggested we contact Mohammed at Home Energy Solutions for an energy audit. We did so and were able to schedule it very quickly with Mohammed spending a great deal of time doing a thorough inspection of our three attics and our many windows and doors. We were surprised at just how bad the situation was in general air leakage, in the ductwork, and in the insulation over one part of our house where, from the pictures Mohammed took, it looked like a raccoon had gotten into the attic and torn up the insulation. When Mohammed sent us a contract to fully insulate our three attics, removing the insulation in parts, sealing the edges and around lights, and more, and we had a ton of questions, he promptly responded with clarifying information and willingness to adjust the work and add on caulking our windows and weatherstripping a door and more. Also, the price was most reasonable -- significantly less than the other company with more items included. He then scheduled the work at our convenience and his team of three, led by Eric, arrived promptly at 8 AM and worked hard until 5:30 pm. In the 53 years we have been in the house we have done about five major remodeling jobs/additions, and a whole bunch more of minor improvements. We have been very happy with most of the firms and workers, and a couple less so. Of all the crews that have worked in our home, Eric and his team were outstanding in every way -- so helpful, courteous, hardworking, quiet, neat, patient in answering questions, and so much more!!! They cleaned up afterwards and it was great to wake up this morning and feel the notable difference in the especially leaky part of the house. We cannot say enough good things about HESS -- Mohammed, Eric and the other technicians!!! And, we are looking forward to significantly lower energy costs. If you want a great job, at a reasonable price, HESS is the place to go!

We had the provide insulation in the attic of our house and were told afterwards that they would follow up with us to make sure the other rooms in the house were taken care of. Once they completed the larger more expensive project in the attic they stopped answering my calls, texts, and emails. They had someone come over to the house to check the other rooms had them pull up our floor boards to take a look then never followed up to actually provide the service. I have called both my point of contact and the office multiple times with no response. As a result I am having to go with another company to have the rest of our work done which is extremely unfortunate. I really dont post reviews that often but I just wanted to relay my experience as I use yelp for a lot of my home service projects and rely on honest feedback not just artificially generated positive reviews.

The project was delivered on time and exactly as we had discussed with them. Where we were most impressed though was in the level of customer service they provided. After removing the insulation in our basement, we found a few surprises that were covered up by the old insulation. Founders was extremely accommodating as we worked with other contractors to get those issues (unexpected and unrelated to insulation) squared away. I realize having the other contractors come in was probably pretty disruptive to their workflow, and Brian and his team said he understood our situation and did everything he could to help us out. Every time they showed up at my house to conduct my annual HVAC inspection/maintenance in the Spring and the Furnace inspection/maintenance in the Autumn - they were more interested in trying to sell me thousands of dollars of new equipment and systems - rather than do the work they were contracted to do per the terms of the pre-paid maintenance agreement. After checking with some friends, based on their recommendations - I decided to try out Wesley Brooks of Green Home Energy Solutions. He is a small, local HVAC business. Wesley showed up, checked everything out, found the problem and quickly addressed it. He told me whomever had been doing the previous maintenance had been doing a poor job. He showed me what he cleaned out of the HVAC service panel outside by the compressor. It clearly had not been cleaned out for years. The situation following this is why I rated with 1 Star. Numerous delays led to 6 months of waiting to schedule and complete work. Once work was scheduled, issues that I wished to have addressed were not addressed in the work that was done. Work that was promised was not completed with some being credited back. However, other work that I wanted to be done I was told would be at additional charge after they were done. Be very careful to get everything in writing clearly and have them walk thru what work they will perform. I had an energy audit done at my old home with another company and never ran into any of the issues I did this time.

The owner/estimator told me he could not even give an rough estimate for a semi-finished attic without removing all existing insulation and drywall. I told him I knew drywall, fiberglass, etc. would need to come down before doing the job, but he should be able to give an estimate. Two other reputable, long-standing companies could - why not him? When I expressed disbelief, he said "winning or losing one job won't make or break me". I went with Creative Conservation instead and was very happy with the end result.
