We were driving back from Bar Harbor and wanted something cheap, casual, and fast for dinner. I saw the reviews for Zeppa's, which were unbelievably high (which made me feel somewhat skeptical), and pizza sounded good after a road trip, so we decided to swing by. We called to place an order for dine-in, which in retrospect was a bit of a weird request, but we were in a rush, and they accommodated that. We knew we were in for a treat the minute we walked in. The cozy ambiance, the board games, and the smell of fresh dough made me quickly understand what made Zeppa's special. It's basically a third place, a community spot. Our pizza was ready, and we accompanied it with a local beer (they had quite the variety). We ordered a large white pizza and added spicy Italian sausage. Although my husband and I are not the biggest fans of NY-style pizza (we prefer thicker ones), that was hands down the best pizza we've had in Maine. The dough was absolutely insane, it had the perfect amount of cheese and oil, and they didn't skimp on the spicy sausage! The staff was also lovely, checking on us throughout our meal. We devoured the whole pie, but I'm blaming that on the hike we had done earlier in the day. I think we just found the perfect casual dinner spot for our Acadia getaways. read more

Visiting Maine from NY, I was excited to try "NY" pizza ... in Maine. I was a little shook-ith on the first attempt they were sold out of pies! Cray cray. So we had to dine another day. In person this place was packed, a smaller dining room but it's a pizza joint not a full blown restaurant so we took our stuff to go. The dining room was fun, wooden, and had lots of games a nice touch. It also told a little history of the place and how it came to be. So we were entertained as we waited. Only 20 min which was nice and there's some vegan options. We tried the meatball garlic knots, definitely a good choice and a margharita pie. Not to shabby, I would come back. Slightly disgruntled an item when ordering was left off but that's sort of our own fault for not noticing on the receipt. read more

There were plenty of toppings on all, lots of buttery lobstah on the white pizza, with the right amount of soft crust. The house pilz was a good accompaniment to the pizza, but an icy mug would have kept it cool longer. We ordered a cannoli to go for desert and it was the real deal -- creamy with the right amount of sweetness, not that stale, frozen crap lots of places try to pass off. This is the best NY style pizza I have had in over three years. Hands down. These folks make the thinnest, crispiest, foldable slice I have had in Maine. The ratio of cheese and toppings is fantastic. Did I mention the friendliness of the folks who make the pizza? They were fun, attentive and extremely kid friendly. The crust was neither here nor there, somewhat thin with a crunch at the bottom, but by no means actually "thin." So, it's been a minute since I've done a review (having twins will do that to you)...but, I had to get off the bench and do a review for Zeppa's. This place is stellar. We were staying at Under Canvas Acadia and wanted dinner (and something that wasn't Lobster related) that was close by, we had driven by Zeppa's a few times on our way back to Under Canvas and it just had that vibe of a place you wanted to stop in. So, we went. From the moment we walked in until the very end it was an amazing experience. We were greeted by one of the owners, who sat us promptly and brought over some games/coloring sheets for our kids. She was chatty and there were dog photos everywhere (we soon learned the place was named after their dog, Zeppa) - which the SO and I loved (as well as our kids) since were a dog family. We had the Lobster Garlic Knot, the kids ordered pizza by the slice (one cheese, one pepperoni) because we weren't sure they would be able to finish a whole pizza, even if we split it. Needless to say, my daughter went back for 2 additional slices and so did my son...my daughter even declared "This is the best pizza I've ever had", and she wasn't wrong. My wife and I did a pizza with spicy sausage and banana peppers, the pizza, crust, everything was stellar...we polished off a whole pizza (which we probably shouldn't have, but it was that good!). Both the owners (husband and wife) were awesome; super accommodating, chatty and funny. Plus, the music was on point (Outkast, Citizen Cope). Ellsworth is a charming (very small) town, but Zeppa's is the star....if you're heading to Acadia/Bar Harbor, it's a quick 5 minute detour to get to Zeppa's if you're heading in or out of town.
