I have been wanting to try Zhi Wei Cafe for some time now & finally found myself in the area to grab dinner here. It was pretty busy the day we visited but did not have trouble getting a table ~7pm. Once seated, the server provides a tablet to order food! All the ordering is done through the tablet. They have A LOT on their menu, a bunch of the dishes piqued our interest & seemed right up our alley! We ordered the following: -crispy tofu -pork belly skewers -chicken hearts -braised lamb noodle soup -golden fish fillet noodle soup -popcorn chicken -soup dumplings I wished the noodle soups could've been spicier. I added 5 scoops of chili oil but I didn't find the chili oil to be spicy at all. It did help to make the soup more enjoyable though. The chili oil for the pork belly and chicken skewers were great. Has a slightly sweet note to it & in terms of spiciness, not spicy at all either. I think this is perfect for anyone who likes a little kick but not fully on board with spice. The skewers were great. We liked the seasoning they used; it was slightly spicy with a hint of sweetness. Note: we came here for lunch a week after this visit & we didn't enjoy the pork belly skewers as much. The pork belly was too fatty & was not grilled long enough to be rendered, so we found it hard to enjoy. The crispy tofu was our favorite appetizer! It's nice and crispy on the outside & soft on the inside, and came with a sauce to dip that complimented the tofu well. The popcorn chicken was okay. It was crispy and light but we believed that it could benefit from having more of the dry seasoning. There was a light dusting of the dry seasoning that only covered the top five chicken pieces, however, all of the other pieces remained bland. I think if they added more of the seasoning & tried tossing the chicken while it's still hot in the seasoning, it would be much better. Lastly, the soup dumplings were solid. They came with thicker skin than other spots around but we liked that the filling was pretty generous. Very soupy & had good flavor. Overall, Zhi Wei Cafe is not too shabby. It gets the job done if you're looking for Lanzhou noodles and fried appetizers. Service is very meh & food could be more flavorful.
For a quick work lunch I stopped by Zhi Wei. On a blustery spring Tuesday, the establishment was almost completely full. I did manage to get seated without a wait at 12:30. I ordered the lunch combo of lanzhou noodle & lamb skewers. Not much has changed flavor wise. The broth was clear but flavorful. The noodles had decent texture and springiness. The skewers were adequately seasoned. It still remains a staple in the area. The wait for food was a bit long (for the standards of Chinese restaurants, so 15-20 min) because I happened to arrive at the tail end of a wave of customers.
great meal! service was incredible as well. my friend and i ordered a decent amount of food for just the two of us, and a server had checked in to confirm we didn't accidentally over-order but we really appreciated them looking out for us haha the lanzhou beef noodle soup is super flavorful, particularly loved the texture of the noodles. meat was a bit chewier than i would've liked but still good overall the soup dumplings were also yummy, loveddd the broth. no notes! the stir fried house special noodle was only decent, it didn't really stand out despite its name. i found that it was lacking in flavor. not sure if it was just the bite i had or something specific, but it was salty.=
I have wanted to try this place after they were on the Michelin Guide. I don't like the smell when you enter. You can smell lamb, which I am not a fan of. Came during lunchtime, so it was busy, especially with a group of 10+ people. We ordered Lanzhou beef noodle soup, pan-fried buns, and soup dumplings. The Lanzhou beef noodle soup tasted way better than the one in the restaurant in Seaport. My favorite was the soup dumplings, and the skin was thin. It is a little pricey, 2 appetizers with 1 bowl of noodle soup, including tips, it costs over $45.
This spot is michelin recommended for a reason! Their traditional beef soup is out of this world, with springy hand pulled noodles, tender melt in your mouth beef, and a delicious complexly flavored soup base. I could crave it over and over again. Not to mention the other dishes their menu has to offer which are all just as amazing and perfectly crafted. My personal favorites were the soup dumplings which had lots of broth, a soft tender filling, and a satisfying delicate flavor--they were simple made perfect. As for the restaurant itself, it cozy but fills up fast. Despite being busy, it still never felt rushed or too chaotic. The energy was vibrant, fun, and welcoming. Plus, the service was super friendly and accommodating making the whole experience perfectly satisfying and making you want to come back for more. Overall, this spot is a great hidden gem and I'm glad their being put on the map!
Small noodle-focused eatery a half story up from ground level on South Street, a bit away from the heart of Chinatown, so be careful not to miss it. A late 2025 Michelin recognition will get more careful eyes on it. Very clean, casual, and friendly without being dumpy. Refined enough without being stuffy. Ordering is via tablet, but servers assist. -- Pork Belly Skewers: I ordered them spicy (via tablet button, and server confirmed), but they weren't spicy at all. A little pale and chickeny-looking, with a chicken feel and a chicken-meets-bacon taste. Tender. Slightly seasoned, with a shallow pool of soy-based condiment and shavings on seasoning underneath. -- House Special Stir Fried Noodles: Firm, thin, wide, long, and slightly dry, with a very good portion of beef, lamb, and shrimp added. All of the proteins were tender and perfectly cooked, but no real additional flavor. A little chili oil spooned on from the table supply remedied the lack of both moistness and flavor, making for a pleasant entree. When the check came, I put down my cash but had to wait exactly 15 minutes (time was on the printout) before the server came back to take it and provide change. Not the end of the world, but a) that's significant for someone who might be paid by the hour and on a lunch break, and b) I expect better of a Michelin-blessed business. Definitely a good lunch, but closer to good than great.
Had such a pleasant experience at Zhi Wei Cafe! Came around 7PM on a Saturday and were seated immediately. They're on the Michelin Guide so of course we had to try some of their staple dishes. Our favorite dish was definitely their hand pulled lanzhou noodles. The broth had a deep heartiness to it, and the noodle texture was absolutely perfect. I think their appetizers (skewers & crispy fish filets) were good, but nothing standout. The service though. Wow, that was some amazing service. All of them were very sweet and quick to assist. Would definitely recommend giving them a try.
I stumbled on Zhi Wei cafe on a Sunday when I was in the area and really wanted some noodles. It did not disappoint! The scallion noodles were fire. So much flavor. I also got some soup dumplings. Based on how good the food was, I was surprised it was not more packed. My waitress was so great, and I loved the space inside. The prices were not bad, and for the quality, it's somewhere I plan to stop by again for lunch.
Food was excellent we got the noodle soups ( we had the traditional beef and fish kinds) which were specialties. We had the soup dumplings too. It took a long time for them to bring some of the food (that is the reason I don't give 5 stars) but otherwise service was fine. The place is conveniently located near train station so it is perfect
Zhi Wei Cafe is truly one of my favorite spots in Boston and I recommend it to everyone. The space itself is super spacious and I've never had to wait anytime I've been there. You order your food on a iPad but the staff is always open to answering any questions that you might have. If you go, the Lanzhou beef noodle soup is a MUST. The lamb skewers are also insane. Highly highly recommend!
This place is so good, my girlfriend started asking me "do you know Zhi Wei to my heart?" This place has my favorite crispy popcorn chicken, I recommend eating in for these, they are so good while hot and crispy. If you don't know what to get for lunch, do the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup and Lamb Skewer combo. The noods are plenty, the broth has great aromatics, beef slices are tender and the lamb skewers are perfectly seasoned, even my friends who don't eat lamb because of its gaminess approved of it. If you are dining with friends who can eat lamb, try it and if you don't like it, you can give it to them, or you might catch yourself ordering extra. We also had their Mala Beef Slices as an appetizer, and it couldn't pair anymore perfectly with the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup. If you wanna cool down after the hot soup, I'd recommend Osmanthus Iced Jelly. I gave this a try over the summer and it's surprisingly refreshing and was something I find myself ordering as a dessert everytime I dine-in. Great customer services, we were seated by the window and they would often check if we needed water. I came in with a dying OM-1 and she asked if I needed a wall outlet to charge it when she overheard us.
I almost never mention customer service in my reviews because, frankly, as long as the food tastes good I don't really care. But it's hard to ignore at Zhi Wei Cafe. There was only 1 waitress serving the entire restaurant, and she did an amazing job. I'm not sure why it stuck with me, but when she brought out the food and said "慢慢吃" it made me feel at home. As for the food, it was pretty solid. I tried the Lanzhou beef noodle soup and the crunchy fried chicken steak. The Lanzhou noodle's flavor was on point, but the noodles didn't taste freshly made. The chicken pleasantly surprised me, as it was really crispy and juicy. The portion was also larger than I expected since it's listed as an appetizer. I'd definitely come back, and I see why it's Michelin recommended.

I stopped by Zhi Wei Cafe and tried their Lanzhou beef noodles and popcorn chicken. Both dishes were solid, fresh, comforting, and satisfying. They could've used a bit more seasoning to really bring out the flavors. The broth was clean and the noodles had a nice chew. The popcorn chicken was crispy and light. The interior of the cafe was surprisingly spacious and cute definitely a nice spot to sit down and hang out for a while. read more
Stopped by after a 5 hour train ride in south station. It's in the heart of the leather district, so parking is a little better than Chinatown. Inside the decor is nice, their branding/packaging are really nice. Their disposable chopsticks are elaborate for disposable cutlery. Food wise, the texture of their noodles are spot on. It's bouncy and has the right chewiness. The Lanzhou noodle was good, a clear broth with hints of schezuan peppercorns. I would order it again. The stir fried house noodle was ok. The noodle and ingredients were good but I didn't care for the stir fry flavor. The hand made pork bun was excellent. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to have soup, but nonetheless something I'd get again. The kumquat tea is something you don't see often so a must get. read more

Taking Amtrak home from Maine to NY and had a 2+ hour layover in Boston. It was bitterly cold so I didn't want to venture too far. This is just a couple blocks away and the menu looked good. Got the braised lamb Lanzhou noodle soup. Nice portion and very tasty. Would have liked a little more spice but still very good. Water was served in a teapot which was unique. Service was also good. If I'm ever back in the area I'd go back. read more

Warm and cozy! The beef noodle soup was spicy, but it wasn't overly spicy where your tongue goes numb~ the chicken heart skewers were a bit dry but flavorful with its spices. The soup dumplings were the main reason I wanted to try this place! They were my favorite part of my meal! Wish the order had more than 4 because I was ready to get more servings! The stir fried shrimp noodles were flavorful and delicious. It was filling and you leave this place satisfied. Decided to try this place for lunch since we were near boston area and was looking for Chinese restaurant. The place is quite unnoticeable as it's camouflaged along with other building in the area and would probably not notice unless you specifically come to this restaurant or look closely at the sign in front of the restaurant. Inside is very open space with high roofing. There are only few seatings as everything is spaced out and it does have few second floor seatings. I ordered their Lanzhou beef noodle soup, chicken skewers, and soup dumplings. As the place was not too busy at the time orders came quickly. I had never tried Lanzhou beef noodle soup but it was very good. It's a delicate dish consisting of slightly spicy and flavorful broth combined with fatty beef, white radish slices and smooth noodles. Chicken skewers and soup dumplings were also good but was not anything out of the ordinary. Overall I liked the place. Food and service were solid. Lanzhou beef noodle soup was definitely the highlight. Personally I like a bit more punch and flavor in my noodles but it was certainly a delightful dish and hand made noodles were very good. Order take out. POPCORN CHICKEN - good and tender but a bit salty for me. BBQ LAMB SKEWERS - good, fatty & tender also a bit salty on 1st bite. COLD PRESERVED EGG SALAD - really good. HAND PULLED LAMB CHOPS NOODLE SOUP W/ BOK CHOY - really good. Lamb - 3 thick slices and tender. Bok Choy was really sweet. Trust me. Just GO! House/handmade noodles - soft & chewy as they should be. Soup broths. DELICIOUS. Not salty. Don't be fooled by the fish noodle soup - it's not red but it has quite a kick with its spiciness and I can eat spicier than average. Pan fried bun & soup dumpling seem to have the same meatball filling. Bun has nice fluffy dough. Dumpling has nice thin wrapper. It didn't tear when gently lifted with our chopsticks. Grilled chicken hearts. So tasty. Fluffy fried dough you can dip into condensed milk. Need I say more? Such nice decor! Love the wall mural with the history of Lan Zhou noodles. Servers are nice & helpful. There are 3 different types of seating areas. Up front at the window so anyone walking by can see you; countertop at bar stool so you don't need to look at anyone; and standard table seating in a large area. Can't wait to go back! read more

Came back here because it's Michelin recommended. Tried their Hand Pulled Lamb Chops Noodle Soup. It's ordinary. Nothing special. The noodle doesn't taste like hand pulled though. The lamb chop is very fatty and not too tender. The barbecue beef skewer is bad. It's chewy and flavor is ok. Service is good. They tried to interact with customers and ordering is from an iPad. It's convenient. They still have a big lamb smell inside mainly because of the lamb hot pot. read more

I was so grateful and impressed by the customer service here! They didn't have too many employees working when I visited on a weekday evening, but the servers were all very attentive and kind to me. I arrived a bit earlier than my dining partner but got seated immediately because the restaurant was fairly empty at the time. Since my dining partner was on the way, we decided that I would order for us first. The employee who took my order offered to keep a menu for my dining partner to review. It was a super small gesture but I really appreciated it. I ordered a noodle soup which came out within 5-10 minutes of ordering. Without me needing to ask, another employee came by my table with a set of small bowls and spoons to ask me if I ordered the noodle soup to share. These small gestures made me feel that the staff genuinely care about their customers! On top of the excellent customer service, I really enjoyed the food here. I tried the mala lamb ($19.99), the soup dumplings ($8.99), and the Lanzhou beef noodle soup ($14.99). The mala lamb came with very tender pieces of lamb soaked in a smoky chili oil. The lamb sat on a soy sauce and vinegar-based cucumber salad. While the lamb pieces were warm, the salad was cold and refreshing. I liked how the lamb was on the fattier side which made it even more tender. The soup dumplings here are packed with soup! The pork filling was light, flavorful, and tasted fresh. Sadly, one of the four dumplings ripped while we were removing them from the steaming paper, but they were still very enjoyable. The skin on these soup dumplings are a bit thicker than what you'd get at Din Tai Fung or Nanxiang but I personally prefer thicker dumpling wrappers anyway. If you are coming here for the first time, their Lanzhou beef noodle soup is a must try! You can even get thick noodles with an added price but I decided to try their regular noodles. They were very long and chewy. The broth was light and comforting. I look forward to trying their lamb noodle soup. All in all, I found the food here to be very homey and comforting. What a nice hidden gem in downtown Boston! We came on a weeknight and were promptly seated by the friendly staff. The interior decor is simple, clean, and zen. Ordering is made easy via tablet. We got the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, Mala Beef Tender, and Hand Pulled Lamb Chops Noodle Soup. Everything was delicious! The beef noodle soup was not too spicy and flavorful, and the hand pulled lamb chops were savory and tender. The noodles in both dishes were chewy and al dente. Stir fry noodle - That's a 2-3 stars dish. I would order the soup noodle, much better. My stir fry noodle was a bit salty. The cabbage was bitter. I would rather use well cooked onion instead. But that's just me. Beef soup noodle - Very tasty. The noodle texture is good too. Shrimp ball - I like salty egg yolk so I like this fish. The skewers were also good. But the beef we ordered was a bit tough. Soy milk is good as well. Good soy flavor. All in all, pretty good. read more

Family and I went to Zhiwei cafe for dinner. We ordered Ice lamb hotpot, mala cucumber, mala tofu. It was delicious, especially with their spicy sauce on tofu. The spicy oil must be homemade. I never taste a spicy oil this favorable and smell amazing. I highly recommended! Next time I will stop by again to try their lan zhou beef noodle soup! Can't wait!! read more

Went with my family, excited after the Michelin recommendation, and the one thing we all agreed on is that it was the WORST Chinese food any of us have ever had. A family of vegetarians, we ordered white rice, French fries, Shanghai baby bok choy, mala tofu, and stir fried vegetable noodles. The rice was undercooked; the noodles were salty (only flavor) and greasy (much like food court food); the fries were pure salt; the bok choy was plain; and the tofu was cold, which was not stated in the menu. The only positive was the mala sauce. Although it was not spicy, at least it had a pleasant flavor. read more

Had a cute double dinner date here & ordered family style so we tried quite a few different dishes. Overall, would say that the service was really quick and this is a pretty solid place for various Chinese cuisines. A few items we tried: Golden Fried Buns w. Condensed Milk, BBQ Lam Skewers, BBQ Pork Belly Skewers, Stir Fried House Special Noodle, Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, Homemade Soup Dumplings & Popcorn Chicken. Out of everything we tried, the noodle plates, especially the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, are really worth trying! They have a secret menu 'iced cooked lamb' it comes w lamb hot pot, skewers, veggie, noodle/rice and dessert. The lamb came out pretty quickly along with other dishes, but the veggie and noodles that goes with it took forever to come out. We asked them 4 times before they brought it out and at that point we finished the meat and don't have much broth left. read more

In town for lunch, stumbled upon a place advertising Lanzhou Niu Rio Mian!! Had to try it out! 8/10 not bad for something outside Lanzhou. Noodles were good had some chew and not overcooked, broth was on point! Chilli oil wasn't bad but the beef could be improved, should be drier and a brisket type cut, this was more chewy consistency like beef tongue. Skewers were great and their home made soup dumplings were on point! Best Lanzhou Nio Riu Mian in and around Boston. read more

Pretty good spot for noodles! We visited Zhi Wei Cafe after hearing about their Lanzhou noodle soups and had a great time! We tried a few items from their menu, including the Homemade Soup Dumplings, Homemade Hot Soy Milk, Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, Stir Fried Lamb Noodles, and the Osmanthus Flavor Iced Jelly. Their specialty, the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, was absolutely the star of the show. It had a flavorful clear broth and was fragrant from the cilantro that the dish was topped with. The noodles were easy to slurp and held the flavor of the broth really well. The dish is originally spicy but I requested the chili oil to be added on the side. The spice from the chili oil definitely adds to the dish! I also really enjoyed their soy milk and soup dumplings, which were both advertised to be homemade. I wasn't the biggest fan of their stir fried noodles, the dish had a slightly sour taste profile which I wasn't used to in my noodle dishes. I did really enjoy the jelly and the osmanthus aroma from our jelly dessert but did not like the toppings, which were raisins and haw flakes that got really soggy after a while. In terms of service, we had a really great server that gave us great recommendations with their menu. It wasn't super busy when we went during a Saturday evening so we got seated right away and received our food pretty fast. They have a good number of tables for a restaurant in the Chinatown area and the interior decor is very clean and cute. There was also a wall explaining the history of Lanzhou beef noodle soups so you can learn something while you wait! I would definitely come back again to try some more items on their menu, especially the appetizers, which all sound delicious. read more

This place has some pretty good noodle soup, especially their Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup. The bowl was very flavorful and easy to consume. We also ordered some lamb skewers and soup dumplings. The soup dumplings were pretty good in size and had great flavors but lacked soup inside of it. The lamb skewers were good and not too gamey. The interior of the shop was well decorated and has a modern feel to it. read more
We love Zhi Wei Cafe! It is tucked away in the leather district, which by the way, has some incredible shops/finds. We were created by a very welcoming hostess, who sat us by away on the balcony platform of the restaurant. The menu had all the essentials, including appetizers, diverse, entrées, and a small dessert section. We opted to order the Lan Zhou Beef noodle soup, pan fried dumplings, barbecue and chicken wings. For dessert we ordered a small fried pastry made of pumpkin and red bean. Overall the meal was excellent and surprisingly affordable. Definitely check them out! read more
Stopped by to try their spicy Lanzhou beef noodle soup after they landed in Eater's new places to try out. I didn't find their noodles as springy as other reviews, but did enjoy the flavor of their broth. The "spicy" version was definitely on the milder side, so if you're looking for a kick, definitely ask for extra chili oil. Service was fast and noodles came out in less than 10 minutes. I enjoyed the upper seating area by the windows because it was a bit quieter. read more
