I visited three Zia locations this week and have been shopping Zia for decades. This was my first time at this location. The store was good size and honestly the only one with decent customer service skills. Unfortunately I left feeling the way I have at all the others. My go to location is usually the one in Mesa but since I was in the area I decided to check this one out. This location is pretty big and has a variety of items for sale. Prices are usually reasonable for these one of a kind trinkets and the store was organized. No employee interacted with us while shopping or when we walked in even though there were several standing behind the counter. The cashier was friendly when we approached her though and checked us out quick. Spent $60 on a Baggu and a Snoopy air freshener. Was so tempted to purchase the last standing Sonny Angel but did not want to buy it for $20 when I bought mine for $15 at a different store... :( read more

Been a fan of Zia Records for years... When I walk into the store, I swear it's like a time machine for me as I get flashbacks as a kid or when I went to Berkeley for music years later. The record selection is better than expected, but man it's pricey!!!! I still have in my mind the old cost!!! You can easily spend an hour in here going through music and movies. An extensive amount of pop culture & collectibles that align with just about any nerd like me!!! What's great is that they do carry some limited edition stuff and if they don't have it on hand they can order. I was able to grab several records on the last trip along with 2 video games that were reasonably priced for my kid. We got quite a few things to bring in for trade so hoping that goes well to offset the cost of records these days. Very nice selection! Don't live in the area but we stopped in to see how this location differs from some of the others closer to us. My boyfriend found some pretty good horror movies to add to his collection and I found some new music to try out by stopping by their metal vinyl section. I've been going to Zia records for decades. Usually happier with them than I am now for two reasons. First I got feedback cards from a long time ago. 20% off with no expiration date. I complained to the manager when they tried to say they wouldn't honor it. I got told they'd honor it by the manager and I was happy. Haven't seen that manager again and keep being told it's 10% or nothing. Total crap imho. The second thing is I got shot down for very minor and superficial scratches on my DVDs that are barely noticeable and don't impact play. I was told to take them to Bookman's or to another Zia who would take em. It's also bull as I know they have a solution/equipment combo that will fix scratches. Also I'd think that they'd want to buy a hard to find item. It is a PAL format which plays on newer computers with DVD drives or with a $20-30 region free DVD player from Walmart. I was told "I didn't know that" but no offer still. Weak. read more

I've been going to Zia Records since they had the small location on the corner of 7th Avenue and Indian School (back when I was spending my lunch money on CDs). When Zia Record moved from their Chandler Blvd location I was like, bummed! Like totally, dude! So here is my updated three year old Review of their new location. All I kept thinking about when I stepped into Zia Records was, like Wow... they've taken a 60's head shop and mixed it with a record store and POOF! "Let's Do The Time Warp Again!" The Zia chain is a used Record/ CD/ DVD/ Book/ Speaker shop that has incense burning to set the mood. I would imagine, though I didn't ask, that you could purchase rolling paper here, too. So I began to wonder where are they hiding Bill and Ted, as I walked around the store? LOL Don't get me wrong, I really like the concept and the prices seemed pretty good. If I was going off to college again, besides IKEA this would definitely make my list. This is a Geeks, Geek place. They have dorm posters and lots of cool toys from TV's past and present. Everything from the robot from "Lost in Space"(photos), to a fairly large statues of Leonard Nimoy's Spock, both Matt Smith's and David Tennant's "Dr Who", as well as bendable toy figures from CBS's "Big Bang Theory". And yes, they have both Penny and Leonard. But let's not go there okay! LOL So yes, I'm a Fan of Zia Records, and yes I'll be back, now that I know where they moved. Don't come here to trade stuff in here, total waste of money and time, I has went there to trade some stuff in so I could get some extra money, to buy a baby conure parrot, and they offered me a very unreasonable offer, they tried to give me only $78 for a life size Pokémon plush ((Jolteon)) and a keyboard that has light up keys to look cool and help beginners learn to play.. they tried to rip me off big time.. the life size Jolteon is worth over $2,000+ ((look up the Jolteon on eBay for proof)) so I was hoping to get at least $550 and around $50 for the keyboard.. and the other things as well.. don't trade your stuff here because they will try to rip you off.. so look up the value of your stuff before going to sell anything, I'm going to try bookmans a little later today. this store is huge and has an amazing selection of dvd's and music! i specifically went in to look at the kpop section and i thought that they had a lot of selection there as well! they had a lot of albums that were on sale if they were missing any photo cards or posters. they also have a bunch of new albums at reasonable prices and an album full of photo cards sorted by band that you could buy! i thought that all of the collectables there were so cute and unique and at great profit as well! the only thing i didnt like was the gentleman that checked us out. my friends didnt have a phone number with them so they asked to use mine and he rolled his eyes at us when my friends asked for my phone number. very poor customer service on his end. i would only come back for the nice merchandise that they have. read more

This Zia is HUUUUGE! They have tons of stuff beyond records and CDs including games, clothing, DVDs, and other merchandise like mugs and figurines. I went here to sell some of my stuff, hoping for a decent payout. When you sell stuff here, expect to wait 45 min to an hour for them to give you a price. Aaaaand, don't expect to break the bank. Some of the stuff I sold they only gave me 5 cents lol. I sold a Michael Jackson record and a bunch of DVDs and got $11 cash. The second time I went I sold a t-shirt and some DVD games, and some comic books and got a whopping $1! So, definitely think before you sell here because you might end up wasting gas and time as was the case for me. The employees are super nice though and regularly check in on you to make sure you're doing ok and whatnot. read more

This Zia Records has become a regular stop for me lately. I was such a music junkie back in college. Every night after an evening working in the kitchens, I would go to the old Zia Records location in Tempe and dig for rare CD's and other forms of music. These days I find myself trading back old stuff from my collection for newer gems. Lately I have been getting back into vinyl. Zia Records opened in 1980 in Phoenix and has been the leading retailer of independent music in the Valley ever since. They have locations all over the Valley, Tuscon, and Nevada. They sell new and pre-owned music, movies, books, video games and more. They also have pop culture collectables, accessories, toys, comics, incense sticks, and used stereos. On occasions Zia will host in-store performances by local and national acts. Zia was once known for its garbage customer service back in the day. Especially if you purchased music that was deemed too "trendy". The cashier dude would eat you alive for your purchase and then take your money. But Zia has really cleaned up their act and the service lately has been great. Record Store Day is one of my favorite days. Zia Records joins in with several other independent record stores across the world to sell exclusive vinyl and CDs. i went to a listening party this location was hosting and was really excited to get a flexi disc. i was told i could get a free flexi disc after pre ordering the album on either vinyl or cd. so after i found 2 other cd's i wanted to buy i went to check out and asked to pre order the album on cd so the price could just be added with my other purchases. the cashier asked for my email (and only my email), so i could be contacted when the cd was available for me to pick up. i was charged $46.31 for 2 cd's + the preorder on cd and i was told the cd should be ready in a week (cd 1: $8.99 , cd 2: $13.99 + preorder). 2-3 weeks had already past and i hadn't recieved an email so i decided to go in person to see if they had my cd ready. the cashier said my name or email wasn't in the system and that they don't use customers emails to notify them when an order is ready, only phone numbers. however, i was never asked for a phone number. the cashier said since it was over a week since the cd's were ready, they already put them on the shelves. i was also told they don't charge customers for pre orders until they are picked up, but that's not what happens apparently! the cashier even asked to show me where they were located in the store so i could give them money for something i already bought ya'll are funny! in the end, i was charged for the cd i never received because they couldn't put my information in the system correctly. i went to buy it for less at barnes & noble ‍ never going here for another listening party to lose money. read more

Bought a audio-technica and had some problems with the sound I just could not figure out. When explaining my problems to the employees they told me to come in and they could help me out. Once I did they were all so kind and definitely saved me time and money trying to fix the record machine on my own or replacing it. Another Zia, but it's definitely on point with other locations. Bigger space than some stores and great selection. It's a breath of fresh air coming down here sometimes, I can find stuff that hasn't turned up at the other stores and explore more bargain DVD bins. Friendly staff that lets you browse. This Zia is lacking a bit. Every time I go lately I leave with nothing. They don't take house music compilations so I don't find much when I go and they won't buy my stuff if it's house music. The CDs are also not organized in the best way and should be changed soon. They do have a great hip hop record selection though. read more

Amazing Movie Selection! Friendly Staff! Starting out the staff here is friendly and helpful for sure. I went in with a movie list and have been looking quite a while for some of them. I left with about 40 movies and a half dozen CDs to boot! I've never seen such an impressive collection of movies in my life! Everything is alphabetical too which makes it easy to find things! I now have almost every James Bond movie ever made! Lots of DVDs are $2.99 which is fair, but a lot of pawn shops are only $1 each now. Growing up in Phoenix, Zia Record Exchange has for a long time been one of my go-to record stores to give my business to. With a large selection and multiple locations, they were an easy choice of where to spend my money. Unfortunately, Zia will no longer be on my list of record shops I frequent because they continually try to cheat their customers. Yesterday, I purchased three vinyl albums that cost me just shy of $100. Being a recurring customer, I had a feedback coupon to receive 20% off a single item which I presented to the cashier. Unfortunately, I noticed on my receipt that I only received a $5 off despite one of my albums costing $55. I walked back into the store and asked the cashier why I didn't receive the full 20% off and was informed that the fine-print says that the maximum discount applied can be only be up to $10 so she took the discount off a cheaper album since 20% off $55 is $11. I replied that the discount should have just been the max of $10 then and not the $5 I had received from the cheaper album. The cashier seemed confused with my logical response so I nicely asked to talk to a manager which ended up being a huge mistake and waste of my time. The manager's explanation for not receiving the full $10 was because in his words, he was "not good at math" so he could not figure out the amount I was supposed to get and that they are phasing out the discount cards in favor of a new feedback system so this won't be a problem in the future. Neither of those explanations justify why I didn't receive the correct amount so I left with the realization that I am an unappreciated customer. I hate the fact that a disagreement over $5 would lead me to part ways with a local business, but this was just another negative experience of many I have had with Zia in recent years. If I was just wanting to be cheap, I could purchase albums for less online but I prefer to support local businesses. It looks like more appreciative shops like Stinkweeds, Revolver and Eastside Records will now get even more of my business from this day forward. read more

The items for sell are awesome and customer service is pretty great. Although they lack serious integrity when it comes to buying product from sellers. Yesterday we walked around for about 45 minutes+ just to be told that due to water damage(barely any on the outside and none on the inside) they would be able to offer nothing more than a dollar for one of our 5 movies. The following day, my fiancée, went in desperate to help with rent money and brought two of his prized WWE replica belts, which are normally $300-$500 a piece in the website. These belts had MINIMAL wear in the back so we were expecting at LEAST $180 to be offered, instead, what my fiancée got was the employees walking around the store playing with the belts and making him wait almost 2 hours, and then telling him he could probably only get up to $40-$50 each! What an incredible way of disrespecting the customers personal property and wasting their time! Never coming here for resale again. read more

I have just returned to vinyl after a long break (since the eighties). So, when I heard the new Mega Zia was happening, I had to check it out. I found tons of vinyl, new and used. I left with 10 albums for less than $50. Since the grand opening happened on a Friday, and I didn't make it until Sunday evening, I thought I'd be disappointed in the selection. This was not the case. While I had to sift through the piles of Cream, Rod Stewart and Cat Stevens, (all of which are fine, if that's what you're into) I still found some of my favorites. Discovering those tucked away treasures is what I had hoped would happen. They have a lot of great boxed sets, and hard to find albums on display and mixed throughout. I'll be heading back and focusing on the new arrival section from now on; all genres mixed in together before being filtered to their respective sections. A great sampling of what you might find if you paw through all of the cases. While I was there, I noted what seemed to be a great selection of used video games, (someone else will have to confirm this as the last video game I played was Tomb Raider in the nineties) books, cds, and TV shows/movies on dvd. IF you do gifts in December, this would be a good place to fill up for Christmas Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or Festivus. Whatever. That stuff's all here. All of it. Go get some! read more

I believe this Zia location recently moved from Chandler & Dobson to Alma & Elliott. The space is much bigger and more spread out now. Staff is hands-off mostly but are there to help when you need (you just gotta go ask for it). Store is bright, clean, and full of awesomeness. I recently made the decision to begin expanding the (lackluster) vinyl collection and Zia is THE SPOT to help kickstart the inventory. They have a really nice selection of new and used records at really competitive prices. I will gladly give my money to a Zia over a dot com store any day. Zia carries some collectibles and harder to find options, even beyond vinyl. Just check behind the counter and you will see a smorgasbord of weird and unusual collectibles. I caught glimpse of an old 1950's era halloween decoration on one end of the counter- super cool! Zia also has also amassed a healthy collection of new/used CD's, movies and cassette tapes (cassettes are making a come back?) for you to look through. There are also t-shirts, toys, bags, magnets, coffee mugs, video games, stickers, incense, and just about any other oddity you can dream up. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to spend some time looking around to see what Zia has to offer. Pro tip: If you can't find what you're looking for, ask. If this location doesn't have it they can look up inventory at the other valley Zia's to see if it's available- they will ship to this location for free. I had a miserable experience at Zia Records Chandler today. I came in at 4:15 pm with movies to sell and I was told it will take 45 minutes to an hour since there were a couple of people ahead of me. I said that was okay, and I ended up opting to have them call me when it's done as last time I was here they gave me a 30-45 minute timeframe that ended up taking over an hour. I didn't want to stand around doing nothing forever (for a second time). I get a call 30-45 minutes after 4:15 pm telling me they're getting started on my stack and asking if it's okay to open up the sealed movies I had. I gave them the okay, though I was a little frustrated they weren't calling to tell me my bag of movies were done. To kill some more time, I got food, some Starbucks, and then I decided to swing back by. It was already about 5:30 pm by this point. I decided to go inside to check on it, only for them to tell me that apparently someone started my stack but they changed shifts and the person left so my stack hadn't been even close to finished. The guy told me it would STILL be another 15-20 minutes on top of the hour and 15 minutes I had already waited. I was extremely irritated. I conveyed this message to my mother as she had a small bag of TV shows in with my stuff and had come with me. My mother was irate and came in to ask what the hold up was and why this wasn't completed over an hour later. They made excuses and a woman claiming to somewhat be the manager had a very condescending bad attitude. She claimed they were "busy" when in fact they were all standing around chatting instead of doing anything. She continued to catch an attitude with my mother and ended up giving my mom a new timeframe! She said it would be another 45 minutes to an hour before it was complete. So over 2 hours (probably bordering on 3 hours) for something that was supposed to only be 45 minutes to an hour to begin with??? Total BS. We decided enough was enough and took our stuff and left. Their pay for movies and TV shows is garbage anyway, I was just trying to offload a few more before our move next week and thought they'd be quick. This is the second time they've given a time frame and have taken well over an hour to get through things. Albeit, this time they got through absolutely none of my stuff over an hour later. This was the last straw for me and I'm just gonna pack the stuff I wanted to sell and sell it at the FYE in my new location when I move. Throw on top of that their items are EXTREMELY overpriced nowadays and I wonder how the store still operates. I saw a Saw Billy funko pop I wanted and was told that it was $300. I went onto eBay and found the same exact funko pop as low as $55 brand new BIN on eBay, with several other BIN listings similarly priced. I think I'll pass on the ridiculous prices, slow as a sloth employees that go through stuff being sold, inaccurate timeframes given, and standing around forever in their store. Sad that a place I used to love so much has become this. Kind of glad I'm moving. read more
