Zia is usually pretty good with selection (I think). This Zia is better than the Oracle one (I went there recently and I couldn't find very much). I really like their selection of vinyl, and sometimes it's pretty cheap. Their used CDs are pretty cheap, too, and their regular CDs aren't very expensive, either. The main complaint I have about Zia is their staff. Sometimes their staff can be like Jack Black in "High Fidelity". One time I was buying a Tom Waits CD and the checkout guy didn't put it in my bag. I literally had to walk back in the store and beg him to let me have it. The staff sometimes will also convince you to try something new, and when you complain to your friend or whoever is with you about a band that you don't like but the staff does, well, it can get difficult. But people are like that in every record store. I just feel like in Zia it's with every employee, and not just a few. I would give this store a go. PDQ isn't open anymore, and sometimes you can't find any other music besides what's on the radio in any other stores, besides this one and Bookmans. There is an awesome selection of brand new albums, and there is a lot to browse through as far as used vinyl, CDs, and DVDs. The staff was really friendly and approachable. And you get a "token" in lieu of a plastic bag (if you choose -- and please do!) which you can put into the bin of your choice to go towards charity. Awesome idea. read more

Pros: Good prices on used Blu-ray discs, especially when they are "on sale." Excellent prices on used DVD movies. But, they are becoming obsolete compared to the newer Blu-ray discs. Long hours. Nice atmosphere inside store. Makes shopping more fun. Sometimes one can find a "rare" used DVD movie. Will order used Blu-ray from their other Zia stores. Friendly and helpful clerks. Cons: High prices on new DVD/Blu-ray movies. Taking DVD movies there to trade, is usually a waste time and energy. I give my older DVD moves and CD's to the library. Calling them on the phone to see if they want my used DVD movies is a waste of time. They may tell you to bring them in, and when you do, they will tell you that they cannot use them. (Just like Bookman's). Selection of classical and jazz music is limited, and hard to find certain music in those sections. All CD's are stacked vertically. Almost impossible to find music using that way to organize merchandise. If one of the clerks has his nose stuck to the computer screen, do not bother him. read more

Dirty store & rudest employee ever!!! The store is completely unorganized and filthy!! Obviously the broom and mop are locked in storage and are probably in their original packages. Was waiting in line to check out for a good 5 minutes and the guy in front of me was taking FOREVER, he was trying to identify a song on an album of which he did not know the artist, he was even going as far as to sing the song to the cashier. I noticed that the trade counter had a register with 3 employees socializing, I proceeded to walk over to the counter and ask if I could purchase my items here, the associate rudely informed me "the cashier is over there" and pointed to his right, I explained that I had been waiting in that line, but a customer was taking a very long time, the associates reply was "Well if I rang you up I'd have to take the guy in front of you first." The guy he was referring to came up after I had moved to the other counter. At this point I gave the CDs back to the associate and informed I'd take my business elsewhere! I can usually find what I'm looking for... Okay that was a lie... And the prices tend to be cheaper (used) than me purchasing the CD at my work (including the employee discount... I'm not talking about new releases for the most part). The used CDs are generally in perfect conditon. The vinyl selection is iffy, but I did score a DEVO one... First found out about this place years ago, and was very happy. I could find movies and video game stuff somewhat affordable prices; and I found a place to do trade-ins that couldn't be worse than Gamestop. Well, that was back in 2012. I moved away and returned; and now this place sucks. Their game prices are inflated; and though they have reduced rates for select DVDs, their standard prices are more than you would expect for used DVDs when Blu Rays are taking over. If you look at their gaming selection, it almost makes Gamestop look cheap by comparison. And forget about their trade-in. From my own experience; they'll tell you something is worthless, buy it from you, and sell it for an inflated price. They're gotten quite popular, and I think that's the problem: They were a small place, and now that they've gained some new business over the years I guess they feel that they can afford to lose some angry customers. Only one of the four counter associates I asked questions of about Record Store Day items today was personable. Which is grounds to say that most of the staff here, except the one, were not very customer service friendly nor inviting. They acted very annoyed and snobby. I had a good handful of RSD items I was excited to buy, yet after my questions regarding my Zia's rewards, etc., I declined giving this store my business. Will definitely not be revisiting this store because of these particular, 3 associates. Really, if they despised their positions there as much as they acted like they did today, they simply should just quit. read more

I've been buying/selling at Zia since the early 90s and I feel like the experience has gone downhill. It could be my perspective, change in musical taste, or me becoming older and grumpier but they rarely have used selections for what I'm looking for and the new CD prices are often high. If you are trading in your old CDs prepare to be lowballed. Their selection blows Bookman's out of the water but that's mostly because they sell a lot of new merch. I would rather buy local than online but paying triple price for a CD that is available at many other locations on the web is tough. Also, their website will say they have something in stock but that only means it's in stock somewhere in one of the Zia stores throughout the SW. No single store inventory search renders it useless. I still like Zia for purchases of new releases and the occasional gem of a used disc. Apparently they offer digital music downloads as well but their prices are not competitive. read more

Awesome Store....havent been in Zia since I was a kid in Jr High school. It was awesome after many years not being home my fience' took me to the record store. It was nostalgic and it took me back! The staff and the prices are great! I'll defiantly be returning...often! Everyone was helpful,friendly and courteous. read more

The reason record stores are a dying breed is because when you walk into ZIA Records the music they're blasting is annoying, or extremely noisy. Their selection of music, other than being covered in dust, lacks in good music. They buy this hillbilly stuff no one wants to hear. They over charge, and I know for a fact the one on Speedway near Country Club has had some rude ass workers. They follow you around sometimes like your going to steal their crap ass collection, or when you call to have them find a CD they get all bent out of shape. I stopped buying from Zia, and started downloading from itunes. Forget supporting your local record store, well in Tucson. Besides they can never find, order, and locate anything good. I love zia and am happy about the things I have gotten here, although I have had a very weird visit lately. I was walking down an aisle of cds and I saw a herion or drug needle on the floor, blood on it, USED. Totally grossed me out so I kept walking. Right as I got to the end of the row an employee says to another one quietly " bro I just found a used needle on the floor by the bathroom." So either some worker or people hanging around here are doing more than just hanging around. read more

Music fans can be separated into two groups: snobs and enthusiasts. Snobs are the type of people who walk into a record store and work themselves into a frenzy, mocking all of the CDs sitting in the "best sellers" rack. These are the people who refuse to accept or even acknowledge that other opinions/tastes might exist. They claim Sonic Youth "sold out" with Daydream Nation and argue with fellow customers who simply want to browse in peace. Enthusiasts, on the other hand, have a much more pleasant disposition. They have defined tastes, but recognize the rights of other tastes to exist. Zia's is a place for the enthusiast. Most of the people that work the counter are in a generally good mood and they're more than willing to help you find what you're looking for. Nobody here tries to to condescend. You ever meet that frustrated record store employee who won't ring you up because the CD you picked isn't "hip" enough? I have, and it's infuriating. Frustrated music snobs, you can find solace in the pages of Pitchfork and through various Internet-based CD shops. For the rest of us, we'll head to Zia's and see what they've got to offer. They don't always have what I'm looking for (seriously, no New Pornographers CDs??), but it's no big deal. I might find something else hidden in the shelves I had no intention of buying, but turns out to be brilliant, nonetheless (like that used copy of "Fun Trick Noisemaker" by the Apples in Stereo). Zia's does have something for everyone, and the prices are fairly reasonable, so I give it a strong thumbs-up. And snobs? There's still time for you to join the party. Just relax, take a deep breath, and smile once in a while. Life's too short to let music get you angry. read more
