I'm stunned by the lack of knowledge and customer service skills your employees have at this store. My wife stopped in to get some keys cut as we decided we should have some extra before we leave on our trip. Needless to say, as we're waiting for her to get home so we can leave, I tried both keys and neither of them worked. Holding the copies next to the original, you could see that the shoulder was visibly shorter (approx 1/8") on the original than the copies. In other words, not even close! If I could see this, why didn't Kevin (who cut the keys) do a quick visual inspection before she left? Strike 1. So now I have to go back to the store to see if he can do it correctly. Never mind the extra time this is taking (when I should be on the road) AND the cost of gas (which cost me as much as the keys). But there's nobody at the counter, and I went up and down a few aisles but couldn't find anyone. So I went to the cashier and explained I just want a refund because I can't spend time chasing down people to help me. She processes the refund, then tells me I need my wife's debit card, which I don't have. After some discussion, she calls a supervisor over who tells me I can use any card. Why wouldn't a cashier know this? Strike 2. Being quite upset at this point, I ask to speak to the manager. He's not there. The supervisor doesn't want to listen to me, so I ask for an email to share my concerns. They give me a store phone number. Really? Is it that difficult? Strike 3. This may seem petty to some, but this simple task took an hour of my time, $20 in gas for 2 round trips, and in the end I walked in and out of Home Depot in less than 10 minutes with 2 perfectly working keys. I see ACE as a hardware store for convenience and help. Big Box stores are sometimes too big just to run in and get 1 item. I don't think anyone would confuse ACE as a place for more selection or cheaper prices -- it's about service. Isn't that the motto, "ACE is the place with the helpful hardware man." Well, not at this ACE. You have an employee who can't do all the necessary jobs, a cashier who doesn't understand how to issue refunds, and a supervisor who doesn't want to field a complaint. And for the record, this is not the first time I've been surprised by poor service in this store. At least the last time, the manager was present to step in and solve a problem before it escalated. Wow, the day that Home Depot or Lowes offers better customer service than ACE is the day that ACE will begin to fade into the sunset. Not to worry, though, since you have 1 less customer to worry about. read more

I went to Ace with my friend in search of a fire pit and to exchange a propane tank. The employee directed us to the fire pits and said that the single fire pit was the only one they had, when we looked around we found that in fact there was a whole isle of them. After choosing a fire pit my friend and I carried it to the front desk when the same employee offered to take it from us we kindly declined as it was very light and we didn't need help, but kept asking and went to the back to grab a dolly after we had already told him we didn't need help. He also tried to come to the car to grab the propane after we had said we could grab it ourselves. Although I understand this could be common courtesy, the fact that we declined and obviously didn't need assistance made it demeaning and left us women with a bad taste in our mouth. read more

Bought my Traeger from this location and couldn't be happier. Great and knowledgeable service when I was picking out my grill but followed up with me with a hand written letter (old school ). There's no one in this area who ever went above and beyond. Highly recommended read more

Went there on a Saturday because all I needed was a shovel And a few small things. This place lost its touch. the staff is actually rude For a change. I wasn't even greeted by any employee but rather by the Anderson window guy. All the employees basically blew you off because they are to busy watching Youtube in the paint department and act like you don't even exist. can't wait till they bump min wage to 15/hr. corporate might as well pay them to stay home to Netflix and chill. oh, and no one was wearing a mask. the cashier was knowledgeable though. read more

I always go to Ace because they are so helpful and knowledgeable. I really don't have the patience to wander around Home Depot. On my most recent visit the high schooler at the paint counter used his awesome algebra skills to determine how much paint I would need for my living room. He was very helpful. read more

Just moved to the area, was recommended by neighbors to go to Ace for lawn bags and stickers. I went there on the way home from a friend's place on a Sunday afternoon. It was dead, probably 7 cars out front (don't know how many were staff). I found out that this Ace is the not so friendly neighborhood place quickly. I walked around the Lawn & Garden department with no luck of finding lawn bags. As I was going to look elsewhere an employee was walking by. I asked if I could ask him a question, I could tell he was busy yet I just needed help directing wehre to go. His response was "I'm busy on a call right now". I told him I just had a quick question and I'll just have to find my way. Once I said that he stopped and asked what I needed help finding. As I headed that direction I found them on the floor in another area. There should be a big sign above them since I'm tall I don't look down. Went to the counter to pay for the lawn bags and get some stickers for pickup. At the counter as I paid for stickers and bags I asked the cashier what day the pickup was. He said it depended on my neighborhood and that he didn't know if it was the same day as my garbage pickup. He told me "maybe it's online somewhere". Not so helpful. Before going to Ace I've been to Home Depot on Randall and employees there actually have walked up to me asking for help (that has never happened to me before in any Home Depot)...So due to this Ace experience and my Home Depot experiences I feel like I will find a way to avoid Ace. read more

Gail....Gail, first thing I learned at my first job many years ago was the most important thing is customer service! I'm new to the area and when I found out there was an Ace near me like it was in my other town I was excited! I love ace small, clean, organized almost anything you need that comes to mind when it's something you need right away as far as hardware. Id rather shop here but when I feel unwanted or not welcomed I'd rather either just stop at Menards down the road or head back into elgin Ace hardware that by the way has excellent customer service. I do have a rewards card and for some reason it was not showing up or the number was input incorrectly your quickness to get rid of me was very rude to me. Being that I was the only person In line taking a few min to either figure it out with me or set me up with a new card would have easily have been a friendlier gesture than saying have a great day after you basically shut me out and closed my attempt to use my rewards card. One more thing this is the third time I get you at the register and every single time your have a nice day has me thinking other wise. read more

The best thing about Ace Hardware they have so many items you cannot get at Home Depot or other big box stores. They have a great selection of hardware meaning stainless steel, chrome and metric bolts and hardware for windows, garage doors and patio doors. They also have a great selection of automotive cleaners that sometimes you can't find the other stores unless you go to automotive specialty store so the point is you can come to Ace Hardware and get a great selection of various items without having to make three or four different stops.They're very helpful with finding the items and suggestions as to alternatives how you can fix something without being an expert. The key is don't be that guy that doesn't ask directions go in and ask questions and ask for the items right away so you don't waste time looking around when they know where everything is. read more

Stopped in this location for a few items and looked up the price on the internet to make sure I am getting the best deal. It is 2018 and the cashier refused to price match a near by store for the same exact item. Why should I pay more for the same thing? It sure didn't matter to me as I went to Menards on the way home and they happily priced matched. Also what happened to cashiers with manners, the woman did not even say hello. Well I guess if you can't compete with other stores, customers will not be back just like me. Oh well, guess I'll take my business some place else! read more

I walked in looking for glue for a few tiles, the associate helped me by showing me the best price adhesive for laminate glue. In the end we got to chatting and I found out they will match paint colors from other places. I walked out more than happy with what I came in for plus a few more items. I love this place. Took a screen door in for new screen and a couple of track wheels a few weeks back. I was charged , in advance, $60+. Waited 10(TEN!!) days for the work to be done. When I got it home the screen was extremely loose. Flopped in the breeze loose. Now the screen is coming out of the spline holding it! I contacted Ziegler and spoke to a pleasant young man who looked up my information. I told him of my plight. He put me on hold to speak to his manager ,then said I can bring it back in to be fixed but it would probably take another 5-7 days! Since the weather is nice I don't want to be without my screen door for that long. I told them I can fix it myself if they could give me new screen and spline they said they could give me spline. I suggested a refund but heard manager say "no". Do not leave your screens for repair at Ziegler Ace Hardware! There work is shoddy with poor turn-around time. And they wouldn't back up their work! Boooo! Bad customer service Ace. Two thumbs down! read more

the lady on the register named gail was very rude, she asked 2 of the customers in front of me about their rewards account but when it came to me she didnt ask me if i had a rewards account, so i brought it up to her that i have an account and she was like well it doesnt count that you bought the stickers for the elgin garbage but i told her i have bought another item. she did not want to look up my account and i had to insist for her to look it up. i will never go back there again. it might be because i wasnt white and the other two customers ahead of me were. thats why she treated me differently. i mean if you are racist, keep it to yourself its 2016 nobody wants to be treated like this. read more

This store was the most organized hardware store I have ever seen.I am a contractor and work all over Chicago and suburbs.I usually avoid Ace and True Values unless I need something small and simple like lube.Usually these stores are frequented by seniors needing way too much time and assistance or way too chatty maintenance men looking to waste time somewhere away from the job such as your city workers etc..Usually the stock is mixed up often many items out of stock and alot of shoddy stuff nobody should use very hard .This store was an exception.Everything was well organized and if you are doing a small project this place will probably be faster to shop at than the big boxes I always use.They have most basic small scale needs much easier and faster to find than a big box.I see some probably seniors complain on here that they dont get enough help.The fact is that the big boxes usually have employees that hope youll ask somebody else and they usually slow me down by asking me what I want and they really slow me down because they dont know their stores as well as I do as most of them havent been there long . read more
