Zigu is a beautiful spot with a really strong setting, especially if you're into dining somewhere that feels a little special. The patio is gorgeous, and the historic building gives the whole place a lot of character and charm. It has that kind of ambiance that makes the meal feel more elevated right away. The food was also solid. The mochiko chicken was a standout, the ahi sushi roll was fresh and well put together, and the miso was really good. We also had the Russell Reserve Select, which was delicious and paired nicely with the meal. This is definitely on the pricier side, but between the setting, the patio, and the quality of the food and drinks, it feels worth it for a nice night out. I'd come back again for the vibe alone, and the food makes it even easier to return.

We had reservations for 7pm arrived at 6:36 and they sat us right away. Our server Candice was awesome!!! We ordered the watercress salad, mushroom tempura, ahi cutlet, Zigu roll, A5 wagyu yakiniku and dessert. Everything came out pretty quick and tasted really good. Loved the outdoor vibe and place gets pretty busy, they can accommodate big parties too, there were 2 parties of about 12 people each. When I ordered the dessert I asked Candice if they could write happy anniversary she said they couldn't do that but she could do better and comp it, so nice of them! The haupia anmitsu was really light and refreshing. Thank you Zigu for a wonderful anniversary dinner! Would definitely come back!

We came here for our wedding anniversary dinner and went during happy hour. They make the food so fast! We got the edamame, pickled onion, mochiko chicken with smoked mayo, spicy salmon roll, blue fin tuna trio & A5 Wagyu & uni roll. We didn't read the menu and the spicy salmon roll had Mac nuts and cilantro which I did not care for. Also for the rolls they are on top of the roll not inside. But everything was delicious. And our server David was top tier! He showed us pictures of the specials which my husband is a big picture person so he loved that and David even had a light and offered to take our picture. David went above and beyond and even gave us hot tea at the end of the meal. His service is top notch! My only negative comment is the hostess. When we walked up she was on her phone and didn't even say hi or welcome. And then she asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and I asked if you had to sit at the bar to do happy hour and she said no, so I asked for a table and she tells us oh ok one moment. And then when we left she didn't say bye or have a good night, but a different server did. Then I forgot to get validation and I said sorry I forgot to ask for validation and she goes "I'm sorry?" And so I asked her again if I could get validation. Maybe you shouldn't be a hostess if you're gonna be so rude.

I had a craving for Soba Noodles and searched for a spot suitable for a single diner... up popped Zigu! Walking into the restaurant, it had a certain sense of coziness to it. I elected to sit at the bar where I was attended to by Candace (sp?). She was very friendly and personable. She started me off with a glass of water and a nice glass of Sake (which I ordered). I selected the Chilled Soba with Tempura. As I checked emails waiting for my dish, I felt this sense of calm due to the setting. It really is a beautiful, homey kind of space. The noodles arrived and the dish was fantastic! Perfectly cooked and presented, I dug into the dish. I'd probably rate it in my personal Top 3 soba's outside of Japan. If you're in the Waikiki area and want a traditional/non-traditional Japanese spot. Zigu is the place!

Zigu was fantastic! Went for happy hour--the items on the HH menu are generally $2-3 less than regular price, so you save more on the cheaper items. Everything was delicious. - spicy edamame: good balance of spicy and sweet, had a nice kick - cucumber salad: nothing special, but refreshing and tasty. Generous portion - spicy chilled soba was fun--it was not spicy to me, but I liked the taste. It has multiple components to mud together: nicely seasoned ground pork, tempura, fried garlic, seaweed, and topped with raw egg yolk - mochiko fried chicken--big pieces of dark meat (my preference), hot and crispy, dipping sauce was smoky and I liked the pickled radish in it - kampachi nigiri--on the specials board, $10/2 pieces. Delicious with good amount of fish, from the kampachi farm in Kona Service was attentive and informative. The waiter even has a light to help you take better photos, it makes a big difference! The covered patio was very comfortable and a nice place for a chill, delicious dinner.

Food was delicious and came out super fast! We ordered the soba noodles, fried ahi, eggplant, and toro nigiri. All the meat was super high quality and tender. It is izakaya style so on the more expensive style but portions were great and the food quality and presentation makes it worth it! Our server David was almost amazing (give him a raise :P)

Zigu is a great spot for an early dinner. They open at 4pm and you can get a table right away if you're doing a walk in. Their food is mainly Japanese but they use local (Hawaii) ingredients when can. The portions are a reasonable size but it's meant for sharing with the table. My favorites are the ginger pork and the ahi poke. The watercress salad is a popular item and I've had it a few times but I'm not a fan of raw watercress and I prefer it in soup. The prices are high but the quality and the taste of their food is very good. The service from the staff is excellent and Candice, our waitress, checked on us often to make sure we were okay throughout the night. If you take pics of your food, the waiters all have a light so they'll shine it and you'll get amazing food pics. They are located in Waikiki, on Kuhio Ave and Seaside Ave. If you park at the Hyatt Centric (hotel), it's a short walk across the street. If you have a large group of 4 or more, I recommend making a reservation in advance on the opentable app; same day if fine. The restaurant gets busy between 6pm - 8pm. I had the patio seating which was spacious and there was a breeze.

It's not often these days that you get a great restaurant experience with all the elements working in place. Zigu succeeds with amazing food, great service, and a cool vibe in its semi outdoor atmosphere with foliage under a tent. The place is extensive with a bar, indoor and lots of outdoor tables that can seat big and small groups . It was hopping on a Sunday night. Like its menu, the decor and feel of Zigu is rooted in traditional Japanese Izakaya but with a contemporary flair. Food and drinks are creative without overdoing it to create amazing flavors and textures. My favorites of the evening are marked with a *. *Aka Collins : shochu, shiso, strawberry, yuzu, bubbles -great balanced flavors with gentle notes of sweet and sour, beautifully presented with a giant leaf and an extra long ice "cube". We started with 3 different salads: *Local Farm Sweet potato salad-just as good if not better than I remembered. It's really a regular potato salad but sprinkled with thin crispy bits of purple sweet potato. The savory smoked mayo flavor that reminded me of bacon but not was ahmazing! *Sumida Farm Watercress Mini Salad with crispy soba noodles and tossed in a delicious light soy based dressing was refreshing and delish. *Local fresh cucumber salad- better than I expected, seasoned and cut just the right width for a nice crunch, also refreshing *Seared Salmon Belly Sushi ~served with 2 kinds of wasabi, pricey but delish ! *Cold Spicy Tantan Kale Noodle incredible taste and texture, the noodles cooked to perfection covered with a silky sesame sauce dressing that my cousin ate alone after the noodles were gone. Unlike the vegan version, this one came with braised beef on top. Local Vegetable Tempura - good, fresh ingredients but not unique or creative like the other dishes Mapo Eggplant - eggplant was soft and covered with a dark sauce, mixed with a few chunks of pork that came with a bit too much fat for my liking. For my birthday they gave a scoop of vanilla ice cream served with a flaming sparkler, a shot of sake, and a song. So fun and different !! Can't wait to come back and revisit my faves as well as try the soba noodle dish we eyed on the next table.

We went for happy hour, which has a pretty limited menu. I would love to see more options on there. I liked the smoked mayo that came with the mochiko chicken, but without it the chicken was a bit bland. I enjoyed the mini tuna roll. Service was good and accommodating. I was most impressed by presentation. Beautiful servingware and real chopsticks! Attention to those types of details can really elevate the dining experience. FYI: They do offer kama'aina discount on non-happy hour items.

It was our first time here with family. We were running a little late due to traffic, but they were understanding and seated our party of 10! Our server was great at explaining about Zigu restaurant and their food. When they began to bring our orders to the table, one of the staff members accidentally dropped the soba sauce dish onto the table and it spilled on my leg! She was very apologetic, helped me clean up, and replaced the sauce that was spilled. My soba noodles were good, but I was still hungry, so we ordered more food! When we were all done, the servers came back to take a group picture of everyone, that was fun!

They have shared parking lot with the surrounding establishments which was fairly open since it was so late (I think they were the only one open by that time). We were able to get seated fairly quickly (bar seating style, not individual tables, although they have a few of those as well). This spot is decently small but they seem to fit everyone in fairly efficiently. Upon seating we were given menus and waters after. The waiters are decently attentive since we were seated right by their kitchen/back of house opening. We got: * Chicken Karaage: 10/10, I would heavily recommend this. The chicken was juicy and lightly crispy. What MADE this dish was actually the egg sauce on top. It acts as the aioli but clearly much more homemade and heathier, with egg white pieces and the sauce made of egg yolk etc. We ordered this twice bc it smacked. * Taco Rice: 7/10, okay so... I'm not even going to lie when I say that I was a bit tipsy already when I agreed on ordering this. I THOUGHT this was a TAKO (octopus) rice. NOT a TACO (Mexican) rice. It tasted like I was eating taco bell, which wasn't bad per se but just felt weird being in an izakaya. * Beef Tongue: 9/10. I would recommend this as well. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful. They didn't go overboard with the sauce on top to let the meat shine through. * Seared Aburi: 8/10. The person I was with order it. It was good, no strong feelings about it. It was cool to watch them sear it though. It was on the fishy-er side tho, compared to other forms of sashimi (likely due to the skin still present). * Hot Sake: I would recommend this if you don't enjoy drinking. While its hot/warm, it helps it go down a lot more! Honestly I enjoyed the fried chicken so much I would actually come back just to eat that and maybe try some of their other dishes. Plus the izakaya experience definitely felt really authentic as it was bustling when we visited.

The kitchen is clearly talented. But everything else? A real disappointment. The server was cold and unfriendly the entire visit. The larger tables of four around us were getting great, attentive service -- smiles, check-ins, the works. But when she dropped food at our table? Not even a word. It felt pretty obvious that since the bigger tables had an automatic 20% tip guaranteed, our table just wasn't worth the effort to her. And that's exactly the problem with sneaking an auto-gratuity in fine print at the bottom of the menu -- it creates exactly this kind of situation. If the service had been genuinely good, I would have happily tipped 20% on my own. But to have it quietly tacked on after being largely ignored? That feels sneaky and disrespectful. This place used to be a go-to for me. Today really dropped the ball. Be upfront about the tip policy and treat every table like it matters -- because to the customer, it always does.

It was so sad this business is closing down by Oct 31st. With rising food costs, inflation and…read morestaffing, it's understandable but I wish best endeavors for Chef Jason Peel and his staff. My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.

The staff were friendly and very helpful with giving us recommendations. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 entrees, and honestly it was too much food for us. We had leftovers for breakfast the next day! - For appetizers we got: Ulu Tots, Japanese Eggplant, and Corn Beignets. The Corn Beignets was the best. - For entree we got: Tomato Miso Black Cod and the Short Rib. Both were delicious and worth a try. Sad to see that this restaurant appears to be closing.

"Jenny I've got your number...I need to make you mine...eight, six, seven, five, three oh nine..."…read morealthough this song and lyrics have nothing to do with 855 Aloha, that was the only thing upon my entry into this mysterious yet somehow still welcoming restaurant that kept playing over and over in my head. 855 Aloha is hip and trendy restaurant in the Waikīkī area of Honolulu that serves both the local community and tourists alike thanks to their buzzworthy mashup of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and European influenced cuisine that represents the Hawaiian islands rich cultural melting pot. Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. This cozy and beautiful restaurant is located inside the Romer House. They offer valet parking. Everything was fresh and delicious! I can't recommend the food enough. Portions are tapas style and a bit pricey, like most places in Honolulu, I guess.
