Wow! What a great dinner we had here. We were with a group of 11 and had a table in the back of the restaurant mostly to ourselves. From the outside the place does not look like much, and its not fancy on the inside, but we all enjoyed our meals. I got the chicken terriyaki dinner ($35). This came with a variety of items - miso soup, salad, an egg custard dish, dessert, etc. Others in the group had a variety of sushi and sashimi. At the end of the meal they brought out a special ice cream dessert for the birthday guy. We had 2 kids with us and the cook ended up coming out and let them pick a toy from a box. Called in a reservation several days prior to going to Yoshitsune. The restaurant is located in the Park Shore Waikiki on the Makai end of Kapahulu Avenue. There is validated valet parking or you can park across the street at the zoo. The restaurant is located towards the rear of the hotel lobby. You enter through a noren (fabric curtain), and the first thing you see is the sushi bar. The sushi chef yells out "irasshaimase". There was no host, one of the servers greeted and escorted us to our reserved table. There were about 4 other tables with guests seated (with more tables near entrance in front of the sushi bar). The menu and dining utensils were already on the table. Our server came over and asked if we wanted anything to drink, so we requested water, green tea and BIL ordered a Coke. We ordered the sweet miso eggplant and edamame for starters. I ordered the Yoshitsune Bento with broiled Atlantic Salmon. Wifey ordered the Shizuka Gozen Bento with misoyaki butterfish and my son got the 8 piece Maguro Nigiri sushi. Our server brought us a complimentary house-made tofu appetizer. It was very unique, soft and like threads of noodles. The sweet miso eggplant was delicious! Our server said that the house-made tofu, sweet miso eggplant and the misoyaki butterfish are their specialties. Our server brought pickled vegetables and miso soup, followed by our entrees. My lunch was beautifully plated in a black lacquered partitioned bento box with Maguro sashimi, assorted tempura, vegetable nimono, broiled salmon and white rice. The entire bento was very flavorful and delicious! Both servers spoke with a Japanese accent were so friendly. In fact, besides the mainland tourists sitting adjacent to us, the diners at the other tables all spoke Japanese. They must be regulars, because the two servers appeared to know them. Our meals came with ice cream, so I ordered green tea ice cream. A little bitter, a little sweet, it was a perfect way to end our meal. The same server that escorted us to our table walked us to the restaurant's entry and held open the noren and thanked us for dining with them. We paid for our valet ticket ($5) at the hotel's front desk and gave the valet our ticket. It was a very enjoyable lunch, probably one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants on Oahu. We will definitely be back to try their Kamameshi dishes and their tiered Chirashi plate. Highly recommend that you try this restaurant and be sure to call in a reservation. read more

After a very long day of traveling we needed food and wanted fresh sushi so we asked at the hotel for a recommendation. Yoshitsune was the. Lowest so off we went. It is inside a building so maps wanted us to go into a parking lot but I finally just asked someone and he took us to their front door. As soon as we walked in I knew it was going to be good. We were greeted by the sushi chefs and taken to a table with lots of welcomes and thank yous. We ordered several pieces of nigiri and they were all so fresh and amazingly delicious. I mean fabulous. Of course we don't don't get fish this fresh in Colorado so I'm always excited about fresh fish! The Toro was my favorite and the red snapper was a close second. This spot is tucked inside the hotel lobby so I had not actually heard of it before. Seated immediately and pointed towards the lunch special, which looked amazing, however I was with my daughter and she does not eat mushrooms and likes to share so we looked over the menu and picked out a couple of items. Everything was fresh and delicious. The tempura was some of the best I had ever had. The sashimi was also a really nice assortment and plentiful. I love this place. It's super traditional, affordable/wide range of prices from "cheap" to "overly expensive" and there's something for every one. They have an extensive menu with everything Japanese! We've tried their nigiri's, chirashi bowl, sukiyaki, miso glazed fish, tempura, udon, omakase. Everything is authentically Japanese. I LOVE their sukiyaki course. It's so good and not too sweet. They used such good beef too. I also go the chirashi bowl. It was so generous! Fresh raw fish, so plentiful. Their miso glazed butterfish is a must if you don't want to go the raw route. And their udon for our toddler was so good. He loved it. The tempura was fried to perfection, my FIL loved it. I love how extensive the menu is, but it's hard to pick bc everything is made so well here! Even the servers are Japanese and barely speaks English. The chefs are super nice too. We had a 1.5 year old toddler who couldn't hold still, so we took turns taking him to the lobby. The chef ran out with a box of hot wheels and let my son choose one. So thoughtful!! We called ahead to make a reservation for a table of 8. When we arrived around 6, the restaurant was half full. I ordered the two tier chirashi and it was so so so good. The fish was fresh and paired so great with the sushi rice. The sushi rice had the perfect amount of rice vinegar and overall seasoning. Staff is friendly and attentive. What a cute, traditional Japanese restaurant tucked away in the Park Shore hotel! Honestly, if I had not looked on yelp I would never have found this place. The restaurant is staffed by cute Japanese grandmas and grandpas who were so gracious and so thoughtful with their service. We came right at opening and they gave us a seat in the corner so that we would have space for our stroller, and even though our son slept through our entire meal, they still brought miso soup and a serving of the housemade tofu because 'all kids love this'! And when we asked to pack it to go, our waitress actually made us a new batch and said she separated the spring onions and ginger because she didn't think my son would like it. Of the food, we loved the sake steamed clams, the miso butterfish, and of course the tiered chirashi bowl with uni. Everything tasted super fresh and they were so generous with the portions. Our favorite meal of the trip! This restaurant is hidden in the lobby of a hotel, so you will have to park on the streets. Upon entering, you're greeted by friendly waiters who take you to your seat in an intimate restaurant. We opted to get the coursed meals, so we got the miso butterfish (36), salmon (33), and sashimi combo (50). Each course has little bites that come before the entree. First come the cold apps, and I couldn't even tell you what they were but each had a burst of flavor. Then we got the japanese steamed egg, which was what I came here for. And lastly, our entrees came with miso soup and white rice. We were even surprised they gave complimentary matcha ice cream at the end! The salmon was simple, seasoned with salt. The sashimi typically comes with 12 pieces with a variety of cuts. However, we only wanted salmon and tuna, so the wait accommodated for the request (free of charge), and let us know it would come with only 10 pieces though. It was more than enough and the fish was very fresh. And lastly, the miso butterfish (aka black cod) was our tables favorite! So flavorful, juicy, and fatty. We were the only English speaking guests in the restaurant which I took as a good sign. The menu was in Japanese with English subtitles. No sushi rolls but the FRESHEST toro I have ever had! Love how it transport you to Japan... Yoshitsune is a super cute Japanese Restaurant found right in the lobby of the Park Shore Hotel that's located right on the corner where Kalakaua meets Kapahulu and you'd never expect to find such a hidden gem but it's here and is something worth a peek. Love the classic noren versus a door and signifies that they're open as we walked in we're instantly greeted "irasshai!" and seating immediately in the back area where the main dining has the sushi bar we later found out that they have a larger dining room in the back as well that would be wonderful for larger gathering but is a great separation in dining area is interesting. Looking over their lunch menu there is an impressive selection sushi rolls to Japanese A5 Wagyu courses though we came hungry "Shokado Bento" is what I was craving as the variety is always fun. The "Soba Gozen Bento" was it as sit consists of some yummy items but tempura is something that I do get especially if they have shrimp and the cross contamination is something that I don't take the risk so I asked about subbing it for something like chicken and was told that changes are not possible and was offered to select something in the Soba section...what!? Pushing forward and refused I decided on the "Ushiwaka Bento" with Pork Shogayaki and they was told it comes with tempura...to which I told her that I'll just give it to my friend and put it to the side (then says I can eat just the veggie tempura) getting upset then as she's completely clueless with allergies only then hearing her put the order in to have been told by the chef that I could get chicken teriyaki instead...aiiiiyahhhh! Long story short she asked if I wanted Salmon or Saba and confused I just said Salmon which is a completely different bento "Yoshitsune Bento"...nevertheless it was delicious even though she brough just one miso soup instead of two it seems that she was confused in more ways than one. Fresh sashimi, salmon, chicken teriyaki...didn't get any rice but simply just loooooved the tofu as it's cut like noodles soaked in a light shoyu sauce was the best refreshing version of tofu I've ever had. If you want legit Japanese food, where everyone is speaking Japanese (the staff and all the guests), go to Japan. Or you could go to Yoshitsune in Honolulu, and you wouldn't know the difference. I have a friend who visits from Australia regularly and over the years we've hunted down ALL the sukiyaki dishes on this island. I thought we'd found them all, but then I saw Yoshitsune. I initially scoffed at the $52 price (per person) for the Wagyu beef sukiyaki, but after the meat came out and the server arranged the vegetables and cooked the whole thing for us (&told us when to eat it!), I understood why. The side dishes (miso soup, the homemade tofu, and greens, pickled cabbage) were all amazing in their own way, and the meal comes with matcha or vanilla ice cream too.
