I searched for a waterproof zipper repair place near Boston and this place popped up. With the review below stating of a ski jacket zipper needing repair. I unknowlingly purchased a left-handed ski jacket from Montec for my wife. I found out from Zipper Hospital that if you use right hand to zip close it can result in damaging zipper. As most people are right handed this was probably my wife's issue. The Zipper Hospital was able to replace my Montec zipper slider (not full zipper assembly as this was still good after only wearing jacket 4 times) in less than 30 minutes for $25. It's so hard to find a place that repairs broken zippers in the Boston area. I recently had a ski jacket that had a zipper that broke off - I took this to the Zipper Hospital the following day. The man who own this shop with his wife is one of the nastiest people I have ever met. I took a gym bag in to have a zipper looked at that was not closing properly. It appeared to be off the runner He told me I would need a new zipper and said he could not guarantee that it would hold up. When I asked him the price, he quoted me $65.00! I knew that he just did not want to be bothered doing it. I walked down to Alton Shoe Repair further down on Harvard Street near Stop and Shop and the gentleman that works there could not have been any nicer, He said I did NOT NEED A NEW ZIPPER! Peace of mind with speed and affordability. I broke a zipper on my snow pants and am going on a backcountry ski trip far from civilization in a few days. I'd be in legitimate trouble if snow got in my pants: cold, wet, miserable. It was past warranty, tech material, and mailing it for repair would've taken too long. Michael fixed the zipper: 1) he fastened it at the broken juncture and sealed it off so no snow would get in, and 2) then switched the direction of the zipper, so it's still functional! Even at $42 for a new zipper (it's a long coat), I paid about a quarter of what the coat would have cost new. I dropped it off before the holidays so I had to wait a few weeks before it was ready, but the work looks great--you'd never know it's not the original zipper. I dropped by to see if I can get a leather shoulder strap for my Ferragamo bag shortened. I wasn't expecting a lot. The gentleman at the shop took a look and immediately pointed out that the strap was sealed with special treatment, thus I will lose the look if I have it shortened. I let him know that I am OK with that. He asked me to return in 20min. When I returned, I was really surprised by how beautiful the shortened strap looked. While it wasn't exactly the same as the original with special sealing, the shortened strap looks so good it almost looked like as the original. The quality really exceeded my expectation. Amazing service! I came in with a pair of boots, one of which had a broken zipper. I didn't have the original zipper and thought they would just replace it with a generic one, making the two boots look different. I took the boot to 3 cobblers in Boston, all told me that I would need a full zipper replacement at around $120 per boot and possibly the same for the other one as the zippers might not properly match. All three suggested that it might be time to let these boots go and buy new ones. I found the Zipper Hospital online, emailed, they asked to email some photos and I got a very quick reply stating that based on the photos it is likely they can fix it for $25. And that is exactly what happened. I dropped off, took a walk and then picked them up within 45 minutes. Truly a great experience and that was well worth the 25 bucks to me. I had a zipper on a back-pack which was important and needed to be repaired. I had taken it to others but didn't feel comfortable at the approach and response. I finally came to Brookline and to their store at the arcade. It isn't elegant but the approach and expertise was phenomenal. They replaced the zipper with a more durable one and kept the pulls keeping it as "new" as possible. It was very much appreciated. They were also punctual and I can't believe the quality. My footfalls echo in the empty corridor. Please let them be able to do something. I'm not ready to put you in a box. To be forgotten with time. I stumble into the entryway. 'Help! Please! That happened in my head. But I did really badly want to come into the Zipper Hospital going 'Help! Help! My dress is broken-injured-dead! Please say you can do something!' But once I saw a cute, quiet Russian (or Polish... European. Lets go with that.) couple bent over on sewing machines, surrounded by garments, I reconsidered and kept my trap shut. $15 to fix a zipper on one of my Anthropologie dresses that ran off the tracks when I was dumb enough not to unzip it before taking it off. When I picked the garment up two days later, not only had the zipper been fixed, but the seams and threads around the zipper had been trimmed up and reinforced. A+ in my book. They're don't have a storefront on the street. 318 Harvard Street is called The Arcade Building. It looks like the typical office building, but the first floor is all storefronts. ZH is all the way in the back on the right. I have a guitar gigbag whose stitching holding one of the straps to the bag was coming apart. $30 and 40 minutes later, it was as good as new. It wasn't just a matter of running an industrial sewing machine for a few seconds. They had to add an additional small piece of webbing for reasons I understand but can't easily put into words. If I didn't know the bag had been repaired, I couldn't tell from looking at it. read more

The slider had fallen off the zipper of my favorite winter coat so I went in to get a replacement. I knew what I needed and how to replace it and just needed to get the right size slider. Rather than sell me the 50 cent slider, they wanted to charge me $15 to replace it. I'm sorry, but that's a bit too hefty a markup for what would take less than a minute of work on their part. I took the coat to Joann Fabrics, found a 6" zipper with the same tooth profile and bought it for $2. Cut off the zipper stop and put the slider on my coat before leaving the parking lot. I'm all for supporting small local businesses, but that support stops when they want to bend you over the table to make a quick buck. Sorry Zipper Hospital, but you just flat lined. read more

I had a much loved backpack, fixed here and there across the decade, but the net pocket gave out on the back. I looked at getting a new one, but nothing had "just the right pockets" as the "old familiar one". Zipper Hospital was recommended (they do all kinds of repairs normal tailors do't do, luggage, boat covers, is what I've read to give you an idea). The couple that work there are VERY nice, helpful and they did a PERFECT repair on something I thought would not be possible. They replaced the net part (I thought it would need to be material) so it looks great and explained that to do material would weigh the remaining net part down and it would need repair again. They do good work, but prices are quite high & the people are incredibly rude. They outright scolded me for having had my coat zipper get broken (the one they replaced). It's also inconvenient that they don't take cards and have a policy that after Feb. 1, you have to pay the ENTIRE AMOUNT up front, as opposed to leaving a deposit. (Because, she said, people are less likely to pick up their coats after Feb. 1, like we don't wear jackets up into May in Boaton.) I just called them and when the woman told me that, I was like, "wow." She got all attitudinal and went, "what?? why you say that?" I told her that it was just pretty unbelievable that you have to pay for it all up front, coupled with not accepting credit cards. I sighed and she sounded puzzled and said, "is not just you. other people say same." I told her she might want to take that into consideration. Won't be going back. read more

If you want to dry clean something for special occasions, like a wedding do your research and go somewhere else! I have been here twice for different occasions. The first time was to fix the straps on an old purse. They actually did a decent job and I left with new straps on the purse. The second time, I came here to dry clean my lacy wedding dress because I figured they use organic dry cleaning, which is what is preferred for wedding dresses. After a week when I came to pick up my wedding dress, there was a noticeable blue tint at the bottom of my dress. At first, the owner said it might be the lighting of the store, then when I lifted up the train of that dress against the top half, it was a BLUE HUE. So he said he will try dry clean it again. When I picked it up again, the blue tint stayed. He asked me numerous times whether it was ME that tinted the dress before coming to the store. What would I be doing to make it blue? Not only did he not apologize or give me any explanations, solutions, ANYTHING, but he questioned the customer as if it was my fault? I guess his apology was "This is discounted price as you can see other wedding dresses are $250". He didn't seem to care at all that this was somebody's WEDDING DRESS. So please do your self a favor and take your wedding dress elsewhere where they offer insurance, don't use chemicals and know how to properly identify delicate fabrics, and better customer service. read more

Rude and obnoxious; did not fix my item; actually damaged the item. I left a small irreplaceable multi-zippered bag I love that needed its second new zipper (the first of which they replaced for me several years ago, competently but with much rudeness); I returned with trepidation, but I didn't know of anyone else who could fix the zipper, and they had done a great job the first time, so I brought it in, paying for the work in advance. Because I live far away, someone else picked up the bag for me; when I got it back, I could see that no work had been done on the broken zipper, which was still broken. When I brought the bag back to the zipper hospital, saying the bag had not yet been fixed, the man working there first accused me of lying, pointing to the first zipper (which was obviously old, not shiny, having been replaced by them several years ago). Then, he said the amount of money I had paid was not enough to change a zipper, only to repair it. OK, that might be true, I know what it cost the first time. But the receipt did not have anything legible on it. Finally, he tore out some stitching (I think it was the original stitching) on the broken zipper (worsening the problem), and then angrily returned the money I had paid and physically threw my bag back at me (and there is simply no excuse for that!). After returning home, I brought the bag to a local seamstress to see whether she could do the work, and she showed me some machine stitching I had not previously noticed, that had been done on the third zipper (which had been working fine before I brought it to the ZH, but which is now not working at all). I'm so disgusted! Now the bag needs TWO new zippers. I wish I had never gone back to the ZH Both the man and the woman who work there are mean and rude. I bet you can find someone kind, polite, and reasonable to fix your items. read more

I had a zipper repaired here several years ago, and they did an excellent job, at a reasonable price and completed very quickly. I went there today for another broken zipper, and the man barely looked up from the newspaper he was reading and quoted me $70 to replace the zipper!! When I asked why it couldn't just be repaired, he didn't even answer me. Not only was that way overpriced, but so rude to barely acknowledge a customer! I had a winter coat which needed zipper repair. Owner showed me treads are badly broken beyond feasibility of repair and offer replacement for $60. I agreed. I was offered a choice of couple different colors and styles, after picking one, week later I picked my coat. Done perfectly. It's really solid, plastic zipper, fits perfectly to coat with color and style, you cannot tell it's a replacement. By looking the lines I can tell job must been not easy and I'm sure time consuming. Was so happy I wanted to leave $10 tip, but the owner refused taking it. Found about place originally on Yelp and traveled all the way from South Boston, as it had high ratings. If you look for professional job I would definitely recommend the place. read more

They refused to sell me a $2.00 zipper slider so I could fix a jacket, with no explanation given other than that "they don't sell parts". However, they were more than willing to charge me $20.00 to install the same $2.00 part, a repair that takes less than a minute to do (you just slip the slider onto the zipper and crimp a new stop at the top).
