Free cave tours, free tastings of really well-balanced and smooth wines! The Barbera was my…read morefavorite. It was smooth and mildly fruity, but not heavy. I liked all five wines on the tasting menu, including the rosé, which is new for me because I don't usually love rosés. I ended up getting another glass of the Barbera after we finished the tasting. Beautiful view from their deck. We caught the tail end of their cave tour, which always fun. Overall a really lovely wine experience.

Let me preface this with this - I rarely write reviews, and never have had to write a bad one…read moresadly. I believe sometimes companies have off days, and employees may have a bad day, which can affect one's experience, thus I dont let one bad experience ruin a company's review. But when it comes to my CHILD, you best believe i will never forgive and forget or let our experience be forgotten. We visited this winery expecting a relaxing, family-friendly experience and instead left with our daughter crying after being scratched in the face near her eye by the owner's off-leash dog. What makes this especially frustrating is that the winery's own rules state dogs must be leashed, yet the owners' dogs were roaming the property freely. Our daughter was calmly petting one of the dogs with me standing directly beside her when the dog suddenly growled and scratched her across the face. This was completely unprovoked and witnessed by the owner himself, who said absolutely nothing afterward. No apology, no concern, no accountability. An employee later approached us and said, "Sorry, he's old and maybe didn't like that she was the same height as him, which made him react".....which felt less like accountability and more like an absurd attempt to excuse why a reactive dog was allowed to roam off leash around guests and children. We also observed the dogs behaving territorially toward other leashed dogs on the property, making it even more inappropriate that they were allowed off leash in a public setting. My father-in-law is a VERY well known, well respected, and prominent winemaker in Virginia and across the United States, if you know anything about wine, you know him. So lets say, we understand winery culture and hospitality, fairly well. Had something like this happened on his property, it would have been handled immediately and professionally with genuine concern for the injured guest.....especially a child. Watching the owner casually continue on in his conversation with whomever, and pet the dog like nothing happened while our daughter screamed and cried was honestly unbelievable. In my opinion, not worth the visit for the subpar wine, if you want to take your children/dog somewhere. The poodles were friendly to me, and other adults, until we saw their behavior to other dogs & then my child....The complete lack of concern from ownership after a child was injured was shocking. Frankly, they are fortunate we chose not to escalate the situation further. Parents should absolutely be cautious visiting here with children or pets. An off-leash dog with territorial behavior has no place interacting freely with guests. Absolutely shocked and the owner should be ashamed of his actions & response (or lack there of) to the situation.

The tasting room is intimate, comfortable, and tastefully decorated, creating a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great wine. What really makes this place stand out is the people. The staff and owners are wonderful friendly, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable, making the entire experience feel warm and engaging. LXV is especially known for pairing wine with custom spice and flavor experiences that complement the tasting. They traditional wine tasting and a wine-and-cheese pairing experience (which I highly recommend). The cheeses are coated with the different blends of LXV's own herbs and spices, adding a unique layer of flavor to each tasting. If you enjoy cooking or simply appreciate bold, and well balanced flavors, chances are you'll leave with a few spice blends to take home along with a bottle or two of wine. Our first stop when we arrived in Paso. We've been to so many wineries, this would be one of our top 10. The spice pairing is unique but pairs so well with the wine. Buy 3 bottles to waive the fee. Since it's more of boutique, the bottles are quite pricey, mostly ranging near the 100s. But it was our favorite the whole weekend we went there. And we bought 6 bottles. We loved the spell and got 3 bottles of that! It's a Syrah cab blend. Has the Paso flavor that we love. It's not a vineyard, just a tasting room but worth a visit. We met the wine maker too. Friendly and attentive service. Can't wait to pop open a bottle at home soon!

The lovely Popie provided us with exemplary service for our tasting! She walked us through the different varietals and clearly knew her stuff when it comes to wine and quality of the vintages. Her humor and conversation really made the time fly by. For tastings, I loved that you get to select your choice of 5 wines from their large selection. They have a big tv behind the bar area that you can request sports games on - we watched the World Cup game! The best part of our experience was engaging with the locals. The wonderful people we met - both working here and returning customers are clearly so connected as a community and were very welcoming to us out-of-towners. The wines were all excellent. Left purchasing several bottles and glasses. Unlike most tasting rooms in Paso, including many of the downtown ones, they are open nice and late - 8pm most nights and 9pm on Friday and Saturday. They primarily serve reds (with a rosé available for tasting while we were in, and a white available by the bottle only) and specialize in Spanish varietals. I really liked the educational sheets they had about the Paso Robles AVA, and the map of the different districts. Wines weren't our absolute favorite, but we did end up getting a bottle of one of their garnacha's to bring home! Hope to come back and try their Albariño sometime and maybe do a glass/bottle over a tasting.

What we didn't expect was to be completely blown away. The facility is on the smaller side without a lot of frills, but honestly that's part of the charm. The staff are warm and genuine, and you can feel their pride in both the winery and the wines they produce. The focus here is on GSM blends and other Rhône varietals, along with Bordeaux blends and varietals -- big, bold, and fruit-forward, but balanced enough to keep things interesting glass after glass. We had such a great experience that we joined the wine club before we left. We don't live locally, but the Ecluse Enthusiast membership is absolutely worth it -- especially with only a 6-bottle annual commitment. It's given us a great reason to make Paso an annual trip, and Ecluse is always one of our must-stop favorites. Since joining, the winery has gone through some exciting changes. They've built out a beautiful terrace overlooking the vineyard, and they were acquired by Thibido Winery. We were a little nervous about what that might mean for the brand we loved, but they've stayed true to keeping both labels separate and distinct -- and we've only benefited from it, since we now get to taste wines from both when we come for our annual pickup. We can't wait to spend more time on that terrace during our next visit. If you're putting together a Paso Robles wine itinerary, Ecluse deserves a spot on it.

But the experience on the ground was bad enough that none of that mattered by the time we left. We didn't have a reservation, that's on us. But the website says reservations are recommended, not required, so we figured we'd try anyway. From the moment we walked in, it was clear we weren't wanted. The hostess hustled us into a side room, then walked off, at which point a server immediately told me -- not pleasantly -- that I was standing in the wrong place. When I asked about a few wines I was interested in, I was met with a clear lack of interest, capped off by being rudely told to just get a glass of muscat, like the suggestion was as much about getting rid of me as it was a recommendation. So that's what we did, and then we left. We tasted at several other wineries in Paso Robles that day and had wonderful experiences at every one of them. Staff who were warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to have us, reservation or not. Sculpterra was the only stop where we walked away having spent next to nothing, and it's the only place on the entire trip we'll never go back to, no matter how nice the grounds are. Beautiful property, but the people working the floor that day made it clear they didn't want our business, so we obliged.

Came here with a friend who's a member after dinner and had never even heard of this place before…read more-- total hidden gem. Small tasting room with a couple tables outside, very cozy and chill. The woman pouring was really nice and knowledgeable. I don't know much about wine, so this is more about the experience, but my friend loves The Philanthropist so we stuck with that. Someone at the bar told us to try the 2023 Pinot and I'm so glad they did -- smooth, no weird aftertaste. I ended up buying a bottle. Fun, welcoming, dog-friendly, and small enough that you can actually chat with people. Would definitely come back.
