This is the second time we've made a visit in less than a month and it's always bustling with a line and wait for food. We tried the chicken tikka masal both times and the first time was good, but the second time it was made even better. We had a croissant that was decent and a tuna avocado that was also okay. I've had this place bookmarked for the longest time since everyone raved about it on social media. I wanted to see what the hype was all about so decided to stop by on a Sunday morning around 9 AM. I was puzzle surprised when I saw that there wasn't a line. They had a good variety of selection so it was a little hard for me to decide what to get. I ordered three pastries. Ube Moon - way too much ube inside, so I had to toss some out. Almond Croissant - flaky on the outside, but it wasn't warm enough even after they warmed it up. Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Croissant - had high hopes for this one, but it was a bit disappointed. The chicken wasn't warm and I couldn't taste the lemongrass. Glad I was able to check this off my list. They do have unique pastries with great presentation, which I thought was pretty cool. But prices are a bit steep in my opinion. I've been wanting to come here for a while, so I was excited when I finally had to be in CV and had the chance to drop by. The pastries all looked delicious, so I got the fruit croissant danish. While it (and all the others) looked gorgeous, the taste was meh and honestly, it barely had any taste of the fruit - I can't remember if it was supposed to be guava or passionfruit, but I tasted neither. I also got the sea salt cream latte, which was a lot of cream and very minimal coffee. Just overall, the entire experience missed the mark. read more

Ones is a very cute and solid neighborhood cafe. It's on a a corner of the boulevard with its own parking lot which is convenient. It's small with some outdoor seating available. The pastries are beautiful and well made. My favorites were the sesame filled and pistachio filled ones. Overall they were tasty but I wish they had more filling to them. They were tasty and flaky, but honestly I've had croissants from other places that were flakier and I like mine with made with a little more butter. What I really liked that I was pleasantly surprised with was the iced sesame latte. It had a nice roasted, earthy taste with some sweetness to it. I wish I ordered the bigger size of it! Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. However, it's a one-way road. In order to get out, you'll have to back your car out of the lot and into the main street.. Ones Cafe is truly an East Bay gem. You can stretch the definition of "hole in the wall" with this place because 2/3 of the bake shop is the kitchen and 1/3 is the display/ordering area. Making it a bit cramp when you're trying to stand in line, look at what's available, and order at the same time. Parking here is hard to get to as well, the lot is super small and fits only one car at a time. If you happen to land a spot here your best bet is to reverse all the way out because a three point turn will turn into a multipoint turn quickly. My suggestion is to park in the lot in the plaza next door and walk over. As for the baked goods the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Croissant is phenomenal and the Strawberry Moon is a classic. The flavor profiles here lean Asian with many call backs to flavors such as ube and passionfruit. They also seem to change their menu often too so keep an eye out on the newer items as you visit. In terms of aesthetics of the pastries you can see the love in the folds of each one. The strawberry moon croissant is a good example of this because the amount of ridges in the croissant shows how many times it was folded while making it. That alone is back breaking work and truly a labor of love for something that gets consumed in minutes. Last but not least the staff, we love a good mom and pop shop. The entire family is in on this, from the cashier, baristas, and pastry chef. If you're looking for a AAPI business to support, this is the one to go to. They're kind, diligent, and when a pastry sells out you can always count on them to make more. Disappointment does not run in this family! This place specializes in croissants and I ordered 8 different ones with an even split with savory and sweet to take home to my family and we were all able to try a bite of everything. I wish I wrote down what I ordered but luckily, I did take a picture. I ordered: Ham and Cheese, Almond, French Custard, Black Sesame, Passion Fruit Ganache, Cheese and Mushroom, Shrimp, and lastly, a kouign-amann. They also had a pastrami one that I wanted to try but they were sold out. Everything was delicious and buttery, as a croissant should be. Nothing was too sweet nor too salty however, I would recommend pairing it with either a nice cup of coffee or tea. My favorite so far was the cheese and mushroom and the kuign-amann but honestly, you cant go wrong with anything. Price wise, they started around $6 each which, for the quality you are getting, I believe is fairly priced. The staff were all very lively and super friendly. I found this bakery/café within walkable distance from the Castro Valley Bart station so walked over to meet my friends before our holiday weekend hike. Altogether, I spent around $40 on two rounds of pastries for our early morning carb brekkie. Honestly the spread of pastries they have is impressive; though the selection is not as vast as some bigger bakeries, the appearance is very professional and the size is big. I bought ube moon, ham/cheese croissant, choco croissant, lemongrass chicken croissant, pineapple kouign amann, and strawberry croffle; and drinks I got ube latte, black sesame latte, and chai latte. I know that's a lot but I have 3 kids lol. I liked all the pastries especially the lemongrass chicken and ube moon. The pastries have nice crunchy exteriors and I enjoyed it! As for drinks, the black sesame latter is my favorite as it has a bold flavor and a nice balance of coffee and sesame. My least favorite is the ube latte cuz it lacks depth and not worth the price. Saw this viral bakery on Instagram and got to check it out. The location is in prime downtown area of Castro valley. We got there 30 mins before closing and was surprised that they still had a lot of options left. There were a lot that I was curious about, but we ended up going with the lemongrass chicken croissant and pistachio croissant. Lemon grass was very delicious. It was chicken thigh and seasoned very well. I wish the chicken was shredded because there were bites that didn't have chicken in it. Pistachio croissant is filled with pistachio cream. This time, I came around 9am and was glad there were still some options left! This is a small cafe located in downtown Castro valley. Parking is a little weird- there's a small lot that only goes one way, but there's no outlet. There was a small line when I went and a few people seated outside enjoying their coffee and pastries. I got the almond croissant, strawberry and ube moon croissants and a passion fruit muffin danish. Everything was delicious! The moon croissants seemed to be the lost popular because I was able to snag the last three! The croissants were crispy and flaky on the outside with a good amount of filling inside. My review is middle of the road. I dropped by this Friday morning, 8:30am. Parking is wonky. My three point turnaround skills came in handy. I walked into the bakery and did a once-over of what was available. Instantly spotted some options. The bakery display is really tall. I am not tall. One of the servers warmly greeted the Spanish speaking patrons that walked in after me-She probably knew them? We were all meandering our picks. I finally stepped in front of the register and asked if we were supposed to place our orders behind the thick plexiglass or order at the front. There were two young persons in the front that said either way would work. I was not greeted or welcomed, so I was confused. I placed my order for three pastries, it came out to be over $23. I did not add a tip, as I don't feel like placing three pastries in a box is warranted a tip. The pastries were good. I got the egg and potato croissant, pastrami and cheese, and a ham and cheese croissant. I felt like being greeted and acknowledged was a very basic thing to do in creating a great experience. Niche businesses need to realize this. Why did the donut business down the street become an icon in this town for decades? Because the people behind the counter loved the people coming in. Wow, this place exceeded my expectations! We drove by this little corner shop in Castro Valley so many times and we finally decided to give it a shot. Yes, the parking lot next to it is a little bit too small but there are so many big lots nearby you can just walk over. The pictures of their bakery goods look so good, and they actually taste just as good as they look. We got the Macha Croffle and it was probably the best thing we've ever had. Located between the Boulevard Pet hospital next to Chevron, and Rowell's Saddlery, taking over pampas old spot -- is a new asian-style woman owned bakery. They've got a dedicated parking lot, but to me, the parking lot isn't really usable unless you've got a scooter or a very small vehicle -- very narrow and difficult/impossible to turn around easily. The bakery itself has a handful of outdoor seating spaces, usually occupied. It's a very small and cozy corner shop, so I assume most of business will be grab-and-go foot traffic. The bakery consists of a small counter of assorted pastries, a small fridge of bottles and cans, and a counter where you can order from a selection of teas, lattes, cocoas. Most of the selection of pastries revolve around laminated dough -- like a croissant in a variety of different shapes and fillings, from moon, onigiri, croissant, bows, etc. Seeing that they specialize in this type of pastry, I tried a few including an almond croissant, ube moon, and black sesame onigiri. Almond croissant is unmatched, absolutely the best I've ever had. Definitely on the pricier side, but worth it to me -- it's fluffy, sweet inside, and super flaky and crisp outside. I was lucky to catch them right as they were just finished baking, and I gotta say I've never had an almond croissant nearly as good as this. For the ube & black sesame filling -- they're both a bit too sour for my taste, but the croissant/moon is absolutely perfect, otherwise. Black sesame latte - not a fan personally, it's a bit gritty with the black sesame, I was hoping it would be closer to a tang yuan filling in flavor, but it just doesn't work for me. I would highly recommend trying their butter croissant and almond croissant. Definitely get there early, as they tend to sell out before noon. Their hours may show from 8AM-3PM, but they often times sell out well before 3PM. read more

Selections include danishes, croissants, croffles, and egg tarts to name a few. So far, I've tried their egg tart, the black sesame onigiri, spicy lemongrass chicken croissant, and the fruit croffle. The black sesame onigiri is not an "onigiri" in the traditional sense. It's really a pastry filled with black sesame shaped like an onigiri and they don't skimp on the filling. If you love black sesame like myself, highly recommend! The spicy lemongrass croissant was a nice savory option and had a good amount of heat and flavor to it. As far as egg tarts go, it's pricier than I'm used to, but they do a beautiful job with the layering of the tart. No indoor seating, but outdoor seating available when weather permits. Would recommend parking across the street in the plaza with the Safeway since there's more parking available and it's easier to get in and out of. This was my third or more visit but have never posted a review. I finally have a moment after savoring the most delicious baked goods with my coffee today. I had gone for a fasting blood test and brought my coffee for afterwards in the car, but stopped as treat to myself to breakfast at Ones. As always the presentation is fantastic and the taste can't be surpassed. They know their craft as the croissant is perfect including the quality of the ingredients in the ham and cheese croissant and the Caramel something or other pastry was also delicious. I have never found anything that compares to the handmade baked items at this bakery. I'm proud I was able to restrain myself and only eat half of each and save some for my husband!! I've lived in castro valley for a couple of years but never knew this bakery existed until someone mentioned on an Asian app. We live nearby so during one of our grocery runs, we stopped by to try out their pastries. Their croissants are perfect. They have an amazing crunch and softness! Personally, I wasn't the biggest fan of the sesame croissant just because it was a little too much sesame for me. The Ube moon croissant is delicious but it tastes a little bit like a mix of jasmine or floral with Ube. The strawberry moon croissant is my favorite. It's not too overpowering of strawberry, and the cream is delicious! The chai drink taste like milk with cinnamon. It doesn't really taste like chai. The Ube drink. Wasn't strong of Ube flavor so I feel like it could've tasted better. The service there is pretty quick you just order and get your stuff in less than five minutes.
