More rice and beans and onions in this "protein" burrito

3.7/5 I ordered the protein burrito and was very disappointed. If you're ordering a PROTEIN burrito you'd expect it to be primarily protein, but instead this was more like a RBCOP rice bean cheese onion burrito to my disappointment. There was some meat in the first few bites, but it was downhill from there. For the price point especially, I expected a lot better. I fairly rounded up my rating because this place looks like good stuff, I guess I just ordered the wrong thing unfortunately.

One of the best breakfast burritos I had, small place, they allowed us on the patio with the dogs. Everything was made to order, e got there around 10 AM when they opened. A must if you are in the area.

Definitely one of the best places you can eat in IV! Zocalo is a reliable spot you can get tasty Mexican food and sit with friends! Super affordable and portions are HUGE! You will never leave feeling hungry. If anything, you'll leave with a to go box in hand! My boyfriend and I stopped in here the other night to get a quick late night meal. We wanted something super filling, and burritos always come to mind. We got there about 45 minutes before close, so it wasn't busy! The staff were super helpful and our food was done within 10 minutes! I got the choriqueso burrito and my boyfriend got the protein burrito. The choriqueso was so good! For starters, it was massive and weighed a ton. The flavor was there, not too salty and they did not skimp on the protein. The chorizo was super flavorful and I love that they crisped the cheese inside. Super melty but had texture at the same time! I also added guacamole to the burrito which was fantastic too. My boyfriend enjoyed his burrito as well! He got asada and birria as the protein options. I had a bite and it was super tasty!! Overall, one of the only spots in IV with good quality food that's tasty and filling! Definitely a must visit spot :)

Cheese so unmelted, I can still see the strands of cheese. I can almost tell which brand you used. How can enchiladas have unmelted cheese? Update: they kindly offered a refund and a change of dish, I was just disappointed when I brought the plate to gf but she's happier now ! Thanks.

I ordered a breakfast burrito to go, and I was worried it might turn soggy. Surprisingly, it held its shape perfectly, even after being refrigerated for 24 hours. When I reheated it in the microwave the next day, it was still firm and not soggy at all, pretty impressive!

I'm so glad I tried this place before I graduated!! Eating here was such a pleasant experience and if I ever visited the area again, I would make a stop here. I came by with a friend for lunch and I ordered the quesabirria and a strawberry mint agua fresca. The quesabirria came out piping hot and with more than enough consome and was delectable!! The agua fresca was also delicious and refreshing. To make the whole experience better, the workers are super sweet, friendly, and easy to talk to. There's a good amount of seating indoors and outdoors! The place is cute and I would totally recommend to others :))

Stopped by to get a breakfast burrito. Really friendly staff and there was plenty of seating. I enjoyed their breakfast burrito even though it didn't bring everything I usually like in one. However, the downfall was they didn't wrap the burrito good enough and it fell apart. So I didn't get to fully enjoy it as a burrito, more like a burrito bowl. Overall though pretty good.

I had the opportunity to finally visit Zocalo for breakfast after hearing amazing things about this place and boy was I not disappointed! First off my son and I love our salsa and merengue music and as we were walking into the restaurant we gravitated by the fun salsa music that was playing inside. It gave it such a warm welcome right off the bat. The restaurant was very clean and a good amount of room to sit. The staff was patient and friendly allowing us time to ask questions on our selections and asking for recommendations. We finally decided on the horchata latte, queso birria, huevos rancheros and chilaquiles. Although my fiancé was not a big fan of the chilaquiles, but my son and I absolutely loved our selections. The consume accompanied the queso birria so perfectly that it was easily sipped all on its own. My huevos rancheros had that perfect crunch and I loved that it was not soggy due to the sauce. I am not ashamed to say that I devoured the entire plate. We will definitely be coming back for some delicious breakfast. I will even stop by just for that horchata latte alone. I am really picky with my coffee and the problem I've had with other horchata lattes is that it is too milky and no taste of coffee. This one was made just right and not overpowered with milk at all.

The Al Pastor and Chicken burrito is to DIE for. Very refried-bean-forward which is just how I like it. Quesabirria was a hit as well. Throw in a horchata latte on top and you're breaking into some rarified Mexican food ground. Service is always super friendly as well. YUMBO read more

i love zocalo. food in IV is typically only good when you're drunk but that's not the case for zocalo. everything i've tried has been delicious. pricing for some items is a little steep (quesaburria is 2 tacos and consume for $10) but worth it at the end of the day. staff is always very friendly and they have loteria for you to play as well. read more

this place always hits. u could blindly order anything off the menu and it would be good! i'm surprised more people are not in here at all times because it's THAT good!! highly highly recommend, food is obvs amazing, service is quick and great gotta be one of my fav restaurants in iv by far!! if u r visiting the area, or if u just haven't gotten the chance to try zocalo go for literally any meal and u will not be disappointed! read more

Since they opened last year Zocalo has been by far my favorite restaurant in IV. Their prices are reasonable, everyone is super friendly, and all of the food is high quality and delicious . I recommend anything with the Al Pastor or Birria, both are super good options. Also, they regularly make specials that are really tasty and keep things fresh. In town for the weekend and stopped in here for a quick dinner. The space is bright and minimalistic, Latin Music playing on the speakers. We were greeted by a young girl with a great big smile. You order your food at the register and seat yourself. They bring your food when It's ready. I had the special for the day, chicken pazole and my husband had the carne asada street taco combo. The pazole was accompanied with a choice of tortillas or chips, as well as the usual garnishes. The pazole was slightly spicy but definitely authentic and fresh. I tried some of my husbands carne asada and it was very flavorful. He loved the food and ate everything! We will definitely come back again when we are in the area! read more

This was an outstanding find. We love Birria and Birria tacos. This small shop had excellent choices and some of the best tasting Mexican food we have found (should have expected something good because it's north of LA which seems to help food). The portions are huge and the service was what I would characterize as kind and appreciative. Expect it to be busy as it's close to UCSB and full of college age kids. read more

I've been recommending this place to everyone! It is exactly what IV needed, and I love that they have breakfast options too, including breakfast burritos. They have some of the best chips and guacamole in town...the chips are always hot and crispy, and they give you a lot. I am a huge fan of their tacos as well. The people who work here are so friendly. Definitely do not hesitate to pay them a visit! read more

It is so nice to have a place with high quality Mexican food! I have been here several times now and the food is so delicious. I like to get the carnitas because it's tender, flavorful, and has the crispy edges. The green salsa (I think tomatillo?) has a bright, fresh flavor. Also, the beans and rice are properly seasoned and soft--definitely worth eating. It's nice when a Mexican restaurant puts effort into their rice and beans. I see that they have a coffee and breakfast menu which I will have to try. Today, the server gave me a sample of espresso flan which has a perfect texture and nice coffee flavor so I would ask for that if you are wanting dessert. read more

We were out at Homedepot and saw that Zocalo had a five star rating... it's not often that you see a restaurant with five star ratings. We decided to pick up some food to go for the fam. We ordered carne asada nachos and several orders of Quesabirria with costume . Must try this food, it was really tasty, great flavors, friendly service. We are defiantly coming back to try other things on the menu. read more

The food at this restaurant is the best!!! The service as equally good! The food is so authentic. Celebrated my 62nd bday with a delicious breakfast!! In Texas we have a lot of Mexican restaurants but none come close to how tasty this food is. We will be back before we go back home. Highly recommend this restaurant & you will be greeted by a wonderful owner. I had the huevos rancheros & to complete my meal the espresso flan for dessert. Sooo great! read more

A new Mexican restaurant in Isla Vista, next door to Pokeceviche. The concept has a unique fusion twist to the menu, particularly with the breakfast items. The creative breakfast bagels ingredients and espresso coffee drinks in a Mexican restaurant, set them apart from the others. I tried the breakfast burrito with avocado and a macchiato. I like how they grill the burrito for texture. I'm definitely going for a Zocalo bagel on my next visit, jalapeño cilantro cream cheese sounds epic. My experience was extremely pleasant overall. The staff has excellent service, the food was fresh and flavorful, and the coffee was high quality. There is indoor and outdoor seating areas, free wifi, and I noticed they offer vegan options. The quesobirria tacos with consommé was hands down the best I've ever tasted!!! The birria was flavorful and seasoned perfectly! The green and red salsas were so tasty that I kept dipping the tacos into the consommé and then the salsa! The flan was homemade and was excellent!! I can't wait to try their breakfast bagels with homemade chipotle cream cheese and homemade jalapeño cilantro cream cheese! I can keep raving but also their horchata latte and strawberry juice was also worth mentioning!! Definitely will be a regular here!! read more

God, I miss Mexico...this place reminds me so much of the cafes I used to go to in the town I was stay in. I got the Chilequiles, which have always been a favorite of mine. They had a hearty helping of egg beautifully tangy salsa verde, and everything was super fresh. The coffee was good, also recently brewed. They put it in a mug for me instead of a to-go cup, and I'm excited to come back soon and just chill with snacks and food. read more

They have such an incredible birria taco! We also got the UCSB bagel which was delicious. The service was reasonably quick and the man at the counter was very friendly. It's a little bit tight of a space but there's tables inside and outside. As well, one of the tables has a power strip to charge devices at. The price is incredibly fair for Santa Barbara and the food is awesome. Definitely feels like a hidden gem in IV. read more

The Quesabirria is incredible. Served super hot so although you want to take a big bite because it looks so good, let it cool down a bit before diving in. The corn quesadillas have a nice cheesy crust on the outside and are stuffed with birria, cheese, cilantro and onions and served with a consommé. You will need some napkins as they are a bit messy, but so worth it as they are sooo good! Delicious! read more

Customer service is excellent and that's about it. Got a birria burrito and man it was really disappointing. It was 90% beans and rice and had very little birria. All I could taste was refried beans ‍. Birria quesadilla had way more meat than the burrito but costs less? I don't understand. Tried the birria by itself and its pretty bland. Yona redz birria is flavorful, juicy and delicious. This is dry and bland unfortunately. The quesadilla was small too compared to everywhere else Ive been. I feel like I got got and paid a lot of money to just get rice and beans ‍ overall, I don't understand the hype and good reviews. This is subpar Mexican cuisine. I really don't like to put a bad review and I had high expectations for this place. Sadly I was let down and I'm just being honest in this review. It doesn't feel nice to leave such a bad review. read more

This place is so yummy. My favorite spot to eat in IV. The quesabirria is heavenly; it is my special treat to myself after a particularly hard week. The staff is also gives great recommendations. One of them recommended the breakfast tamales which changed my life and made me feel warm on the inside. I was also recommended the cooler drinks that they have, also heavenly. The minty one is 10/10 as is the horchata. One of my favorite things to do in IV is to sit on their patio with my food and watch the drunk frat bros on a Saturday. There is truly nothing like it. read more

The quesabirria special is my go to dish here, the meat is so tender and flavorful!

Overall a decent meal, it wasn't much food. His rice and beans were OK, I got Mexican food elsewhere for cheaper and the rice/beans tasted much better.

The Quesabirria was so good! The crispy shell perfectly complemented the well-seasoned meat, and the generous amount of cheese and onions added the perfect touch of flavor.
