We've been excited to go back to Zooroona when the restaurants were allowed to reopen in Michigan. It actually was the first indoor reservation we made this year. The owner greeted us at our table and made pleasant small talk, while our server was very friendly and took her time with us, despite the restaurant being obviously busy. The tables were spaced out appropriately and I felt safe given the circumstances. We got our usual Moroccan soup to start. We love to dip the naan into it. So, when we decided to try Zooroona's, we weren't walking into it with the best attitudes...but that all changed - fast! A Pride flag greeted us at the door, which made my whole night (THANK YOU, owners and employees of Zooroona, for outwardly displaying your support for the LGBTQ+ community. As staunch Allies, we really appreciate it). The atmosphere is awesome: cozy, soft lighting, and our seating was comfortable and private. The food was AMAZING. If you don't try the brussel sprouts, you aren't living. Plenty of vegan options, like the falafel burger I had (add garlic sauce - you won't be disappointed). The watermelon cooler I had was delicious and my husband loved his locally brewed beer. Prices were beyond reasonable and we'll be back again and again in the future. Excellent lunch buffet for $12.99 on Sundays from noon to 14:30. I ate here with my daughter when returning her to WMU after Thanksgiving. We were planning on eating at an Indian restaurant in the same strip, but it was closed. The buffet was well-stocked and clean with salad, pita, hummus, baba ganoush, garlic paste, falafel, one lamb, two chicken, one beef, two vegetarian dishes, lentil soup, rice pudding and baklava. I love a nice, smoky baba ganoush, and this one was great, no overpowering flavors, silky texture. We both loved the falafel with garlic paste, and the vegetarian dishes as well. One contained potatoes with feta; the other was perhaps a deconstructed moussaka. The atmosphere of this restaurant is lovely. It has a nice bar with a good wine list. 8 of us from work decided on Zooroona to celebrate holidays together before our little break. What an enjoyable lunch! It's decorated so nicely-I was impressed before we even sat down. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with the menu. The food was beautiful and delish. We shared a giant tray of lots of different meats, rice, veggies, etc. some appetizers, soups and salads. We basically had a buffet on our table-so fun. The garlic sauce and falafel is the best I've ever had, ever. After lunch we shared some Moroccan tea, Turkish coffee and date cake. I had to stay in a family member's home, as work was being done in my apartment. They are good at traveling, so they make sure they don't have a grocery aisle or two in their fridge, unlike me. So it gave me the perfect opportunity to try some food in the area I had been meaning to, but for whatever reason did not get the chance. I had a hankering for Middle Eastern food, if I am honest with myself, it is probably one of my favorite cuisines. My boss had recently brought up Zooroona, so I thought why not? It's close to home, it's got great ratings and with any luck,​ it'll be nice and cool and maybe, just MAYBE, someone is watching the World Cup. I called in what my stomach felt. Shish Tawook, chicken over rice, with some roasted veggies and that garlic sauce that is to die for. Kanafeh, a dessert made with cheese pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup AND a small Al-Dar salad, which included romaine, tomato, cucumber & with a kind of Syrian cheese​ (a bit salty, and reminded me of feta) tossed with Zooroona's signature dressing and topped with almond flakes. For a beverage,​ I got the Zooroona Smoothie Strawberries, orange juice, ​ and mango juice. It made for a perfect, hot weather treat. This all came out to about $26. It was about already​ when I arrived in about 20 minutes after I had called. The barkeep lady made my smoothie as I arrived to ensure peak freshness, which I so appreciated. I wandered over to a seat as she did so, and took in Portugal trying to hold it's own against Uruguay. For the price, I wish I had just decided to dine-in, it always feels weird to me to do so alone, but I might just if I find myself desiring the cuisine again. The chicken over rice was absolutely delicious, the textures and variety of tastes were​ awesome. I think I might've preferred a larger portion, particularly with the rice. Probably cause I found it all so delicious. The kanafeh is a favorite of mine, and the sweet, crunchy, syrupy dessert hit the spot after such a savory meal. The salad was okay, but I prefer sweeter EVERYTHING nowadays, though it was still good. I look forward to returning not before long, maybe with my perma-date, hubs, or alone, the environment is perfect for it as it reminds me of my favorite haunts back home. All in all, this was an enjoyable meal and I love that Kalamazoo continues to pleasantly surprise me. read more

I was hesitant to go to Zooroona's at first because I'd never had middle eastern food before. Now its the restaurant I miss the most in kzoo. Atmosphere is great and wait staff are wonderful. The chicken shawarma and the garlic sauce and the rice... oh the rice... I didn't know rice could be that good. I miss this so much and I'm writing this review so you can go now since I can't. I bought many friends here for the first time and they all enjoyed it, including those very familiar with middle eastern cuisine, vegetarians, and one friend who was lactose intollerant. Portions have gotten smaller over time as other reviews mention, but the quality still kept me coming back. I just wish they gave a litttttle more garlic sauce and raisins in the rice. read more

Zooroona is a good choice if you're in the mood for Middle Eastern food, and you're looking for someplace a little fancier, where you can have drinks with dinner. They have a nicely varied menu -- good options for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores. Their babaghannouj is the best I've ever had. The Zooroona wrap (spicy felafel, babaghannouj, hommous) is a real winner, too. They also have some interesting dishes that make them stand out from the crowd, like a couple of Moroccan-inspired plates. There are cheaper options for equal quality Middle Eastern food in town, and for me personally it's usually not worth it to pay the premium for ambiance (unless I've got someone to impress). read more

I love this place! Was seated at a table next to the fountain. Ordered Chicken Fesenjoon and Vegetable Biryani. Awesome and complex flavors. A side of Tabbouleh salad was large enough to share with 2 or 3 people. We also ordered a pot of tea. It was served on an elegant tea tray which added to the ambience. Also had a piece of warm date cake with whipped cream on top. It was also nice that the owner stopped by our table to thank us for coming, to check how our meal tasted, and to shoot the breeze a bit. Our server quickly brought us the pita, olive oil and zataar and let us know appetizers were half off for another 15 minutes, so my friend and I started off with the Baba Ghannouj which was terrific (as always!). A friend introduced me to this restaurant when I first moved to Kalamazoo four years ago and this still remains one of my top go-to spots. The food is top-notch so you can opt for take-out too, but if you decide to dine in instead - boy, are you in for a treat. Ambience is incredible with beautiful decor and private booths if you so choose, transporting you to a different realm. My favorites here are the spicy potato appetizer, chicken shawarma wrap, chicken cream chops, and of course the lamb shank. I didn't think I liked lamb till I tried the succulent, juicy lamb shank here. Must try! You will not be disappointed. So this place is ok. Very slow even though it wasn't too busy. We stopped in on a visit to the area. We had a Iraqi tea- which was good. The Moroccan Soup was great. Wife had the whitefish which she enjoyed. So why three stars? Well it all had to do with the chicken curry. I love a good curry and the spice was ok but this is supposed to be one of their signature dishes. Here is the thing: they take half a Cornish hen, literally, and throw it in the curry. What a freaking mess. How the hell are you supposed to eat this train wreck? It would be a lot easier for the chef to de-bone before he throws it in the sauce. I don't know whether to try and cut off small slices of chicken skin, which is near impossible anyway or pick the thing up KFC style and sling curry sauce all over the place. The décor here is very nice. I stopped in for the weekend buffet, about an hour before they closed. The only entrée I liked a lot was the chicken chili fry, a chicken veggie with red sauce dish. Chicken wings were ok too. The lentil soup was pretty good. The baklava is spectacular, just the right amount of syrup and perfectly crispy. Rice pudding was just ok, fluffy texture but bland and lacking enough nuts and raisins. There was only a tablespoon of hummus left and it tasted ok but they never brought out more. The falafel was hard and dry after sitting in the heater for so long. There was a lot left so they should bring it out in smaller batches. I did not like the moujahdra here, odd spice to it. I also didn't get why I couldn't get tea for one, instead of a pot for 4. Tea for one is easily made, either with a tea bag or a holder for loose leaf tea even. That they should work out. I wasn't overly impressed with the entrée options and only found one I liked. It is different from the Schwarma king buffet I like so I guess it will depend what I am in the mood for. I would come to this one again closer to the start time of the buffet I think. The staff is nice. The bathroom needs a renovation asap. I am guessing the regular lunch and dinner service is better here and will give it another try. I was here another day for lunch, on a weekend. I ordered the shish tawook/schwarma combo with potatoes, lentil soup, al dar salad, moroccan tea, pistachio gelato, and date cake. All of the food was good, though the tawook had a slightly spicy seasoning or marinade and did not have the char that most do. The flavor of the schwarma was very good and was tender and well cooked. The garlic sauce is extra garlicy, fyi. It has a bite to it. The date cake was surprisingly very good and came out warm with whipped cream. The pita and seasoning they give you is good. Service was friendly, though my entrée was not correct when it arrived and had to be fixed. They were slow when I was there. It was a rainy day and I had some time so I did not mind being there for awhile, but if I had needed to be somewhere, the almost 2 hours I was there would have annoyed me. What a hidden gem! Hands down the best experience I've had at a restaurant in a long time. I came in at sort of an odd time, about 4pm, and there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. I thought maybe this wouldn't be well-received, but it was completely the opposite. The owner happily welcomed me in and I had a seat at the bar. I ordered the Hummus as an appetizer and the Sultan Shawermah Wrap for my meal. It came out very quickly and it was all very, very good. Also, for $16, this was a ton of food! I'm what my mom would call a "growing boy" and after eating a little over half of my food (I got the rest in a box to-go), I was full for the rest of the day. The service was absolutely incredible. The owner waited on me himself. He was friendly, he didn't charge me for my drink, and he gave me extra pita bread to take home with the hummus without me even asking for it! And to top it all off, when he gave me the bill, he penned an "X" on the tip line and said, "don't tip me, you came in and that's enough for me." I was amazed and I told him I would certainly be coming back. The hummus had a weird aftertaste and was definitely missing some flavor. I've had better hummus at middle eastern fast food places. The food took a long time to come out despite us being one of three parties there. The lentil soup had an okay taste but was watery. The warm bread with the zatar as the only saving grace. We checked this place out with no expectations, and walked out blown away. My husband and I love the place! I am a PICKY eater and I loved my meal, a wrap. My husband is more adventurous and selected a few things he hadn't had before and was really impressed. Our infant son dined with us and it was very kid friendly. This is the only middle-eastern restaurant in Kalamazoo, as far as I am aware... The food is quite excellent, and their version of babaganoush (chunky, not pureed), is amazing. They have meal samplers for specific numbers of guests, and these are quite delicious. Their smoothies are exotic and particularly flavorful, but a bit on the expensive side. Their pita bread leaves a bit to be desired... I'd give it a 3 out of 10 as far as pita goes. They say they'll be baking their own in the near future.
