This is the only German restaurant I know of in the entire Phoenix metro region that serves Schweinshaxe, and only on the first weekend of every month. Unfortunately, they don't take the time to crisp up the skin, but its otherwise very close to what I could get in Germany. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. They have very limited hours, and the Schweinshaxe sells out by about 5 PM. Their entire menu is excellent, and very fairly priced.

I first tried German food when I was a kid and visited a German town in the mountains of northern Georgia (I know I know people will say true German food comes from Germany). I recall enjoying it so much so when I discovered Zur Kate, I was excited to try it. I have been hoping to try it for years and finally made it happen recently. My daughter (who is a foodie like myself), was down for this food adventure with her Momma! We went on a Friday, early evening. Its a very small restaurant. There is a small bar, and every seat was full. Nearly every table was full when we arrived but hey cleaned one for us rather quickly and we sat down. The staff is wearing what appeared to be authentic German clothing. There was an older gentleman playing an accordion which was neat. We were greeted by a friendly lady named Blondie. She took our order and while we waited for our food we just took in the atmosphere and people watched. Based on seeing other people's plates and portions we shared the Rham. It was schnitzel, topped with a brown sour cream gravy. You get two sides. One from list one, and one from list two. We weren't aware of this until we tried to order two sides from list one. The second list contains red cabbage or sauerkraut, which neither of us wanted. List one offers, German potato salad, potato dumpling, spätzle, French fries, or home fries. We ordered German potato salad and spätzle. I have had both, but my daughter had not. All meals are served with a basket of rye bread and butter. The wait for the food wasn't excessive at all, then again, we had one entree. The portion was plentiful for one person though it was enough for my daughter and I to share. The sides were smaller than expected. Especially because they charged and extra $3.90 since we ordered two sides from list one. Yes, that is correct. If your two sides come from list one, they charge an extra $3.90 for the second side. Seeing the portion size of the sides I feel that is a hefty fee. The food was delicious though we did end up salting everything. I have read other reviews that had the same experience (needing to salt their food). The entree was $18.20 + $3.90 for second side (since we didn't have a side from list two) + 4% fee for not using cash + tax + tip =$33 for one entree and one beverage. That is a hefty bill in my opinion for what we got. The ambiance is neat. The German restaurant experience (in the desert) was cool, the food was good, and I am happy we tried it but this may be a one and done for us.

I love German food so much that I once ate a frankfurter in Hamburg and had a hamburger in Frankfurt. But this is more authentic than either of those experiences! Having grown up in a part of the country with German restaurants that had oom pah bands and Gestapo Alumni Stammtisch, I know a thing or zwei about the cuisine of Deutschland. Zur Kate is a great representation of German food, albeit with a small menu. Not a huge selection but what they have is authentic and tasty. I had the Jager Schnitzel, with spatzle and cabbage, plus a side of bratwurst. It was all on point and reminded me "Ich bin ein Berliner," which I think means that I like jelly donuts. (Hey, I just grew up in a German neighborhood and made a few trips across the pond, it's not like I bothered to learn any more German than I got from Hogan's Heroes.) Anyhow, this was good stuff. Add a few giant mugs of good German beer on tap and a little polka music and you got yourself a rousing Friday night trip to Munich in Mesa.

Delicious like always! Will always come here to satisfy my schnitzel, goulash, and potato dumpling cravings. Don't forget cash to tip the accordion player!!!

I found this place so charming with all the decor and outfits the servers wear! I've never been to Germany but I would expect it to feel like this. Overall the food is simple but delicious and as long as you eat pork you cannot go wrong with any of the options on the menu!

I've been coming here for years, this is the best and most authentic German food I've had outside of Germany, even the decor and atmosphere is authentic. The owner, Horus, is great, knows us by name and always has a joke to tell! The accordion player is super friendly and is very talented. The hours are very limited, so the trick is to arrive early because they get busy! I wish they had appetizers (pretzels), but the bread they give you is actually really good and fresh. I come here more often than I should and at the same time, not enough!

I've been dying to try this place as I love German food. Tonight I finally talked my husband into going. It is not open for lunch, or I'd have gone alone. We got there at 4:14. It opened at 4. Most tables and booths were taken. I thought that was a great sign. The servers were dressed in kitschy Bavarian attire. The decor was fun. It's in a strip mall--so sort of a hole in the wall. We sat at the one remaining booth. He ordered a beer(large) which was served in a Hoffbrau Haus mug. I actually own one that I got in Germany. I got the iced tea which was bitter and had about 3 ice cubes. We both ordered the jager schnitzel. The menu is very small. Other German places (not in AZ) typically offer chicken, veal or pork. No choice here. They give you a choice of a starch. I love spaetzle and ordered that. Then you have a choice of sauerkraut or red cabbage. I chose red cabbage. My husband despises cabbage so ordered 2 spaetzle for his 2 sides but we were informed that would be a $3+ up charge. While we waited cold rye bread and plastic individual butter packs were delivered. I also need to add that they have very odd feeling napkins . They are paper but are crunchy and felt almost plastic? Very odd -- not soft nor absorbent. Our food was delivered very quickly. The mushrooms appeared and tasted canned! Meat was hot and good... The spaetzle was cold and had the gravy covering it??!!! What??? The red cabbage was so vinegary that I couldn't eat much. Not sure why , but we ordered dessert. Choices were Black Forest cake or apple strudel. We chose apple. It came immediately and piping hot but smothered with a vanilla sauce. I'd have preferred ice cream. It was ok. Bottom layer wouldn't cut with my fork. It was all ok. We won't go back though. Sorry. It just meh. Our bill came $80 something. If we had paid cash $60 something.

We have been here once before years ago and decided to try it again. The ambiance is very German. It's like you are in a restaurant in Germany. Live German music. I really like the German outfit the waitresses wear I might add. Rye bread for the table was delicious. Food was very good. You can taste the tender loving care the cook put into it in every bite. We all traded bites. I preferred the red cabbage and German potato salad as opposed to the sauerkraut and potato dumpling that I got. Next time. Service was awesome. I think her name Nikki. She created us warmly and was very accommodating. She gave the kind of service that you hope they're working the next time you go. I highly recommend ZK.

We were taken here by or Daughter who lives in Mesa and wanted to try the Cornish Game hen on the menu. I like German food so I was up to that. The Hen takes 20 mins to cook according to the menu, so clearly it was made to order. I ordered the Schnitzel Harold and the spaetzle. My wife ordered the goulash special. I did not have a beer, but they had several German beers, my daughter ordered a very nice tasting Riesling wine. Over all I like the food, the Hen was nicely seasoned and great , mine was very good and I loved the red cabbage, and my wife's goulash was very good the meat was very tender. I would come back here. its a very small place, so you need to get there early. Next time I'll try the bratwurst. read more

My wife has been looking for a good Zigeuner Schnitzel since we left Germany. We were pleasantly surprised to find a really good German restaurant in a Mesa, AZ strip mall. We were greeted by live accordion music as we entered. Service was prompt and very friendly. We had really good breaded schnitzels, authentic side dishes and outstanding German biers all at a very reasonable price. We will definitely be returning! read more

This is the second time we've come here & each time has been phenominal! Friendly service, amazing food & both times we had live acordian music! So authentic & delicious. The staff couldn't be nicer. The only thing I wish I could change (besides the distance from my house!) is the size of the restaurant. If you go during dinner on Fridays & Saturdays, you may need to wait, but it's WAY worth it. I found out tonight, they make their own mustard...I am loyal to Guldens brown mustard & I described it as "a bit better than Guldens" if that gives you an idea ;) . I just love the atmosphere, long tables, music & food! Please please please!!! If you ever have the chance, go HERE. Pretty easy to find, pleanty of parking & a great deal (prices are great too!). read more

Ordered some food for take out and was told it was going to be 20 minutes. The person that took my order went to check on my food at the 30 minute mark. He then came to tell me it was going to be another 10 minutes before my food was done. Was not a happy customer at that moment. Plus the food wasn't even that good. read more

Love this restaurant. Great service and authentic German food tastes sooooo good. Recommend that you order the Zigeuner snitchel.Finish dinner with some Apfelkorn. Yummy! Summer hours are a little weird so you may want to check ahead of time to see if they are open but trust me the food is totally worth it.This place has been around for a zillion years and for good reason. read more

After reading all the reviews I am wondering if we were in the same place. Usually when I go to a restaurant I can say the food tastes (good or bad), but going tonight we had food that had no taste. My boys had the brats and they tasted like water, no spices AT ALL! While the cabbage was good ( and also the service), I think the gravy, rye bread and cheese were bought off the rack from across the street....nothing German about it! Considering that two adults and two young boys had dinner and drinks ( soda and two very small beers) we had a $50 bill. It is not enough any more to just put out tasteless food, even if it was an off night. read more

This restaurant is amazing! The staff is extremely friendly & hard working. When I wasn't sure if I would like spaetzle they brought me some to try (and didn't charge me). They have an accordion player there at night. It's not the typical Americanized German restaurant. The owner is actually from Germany and the food seems authentic. The food is amazing and big servings! It's a little pricey, but well worth it. read more

I spent 6 years of my life in Germany as a US Soldier. I was thrilled to find this restaurant and consider the food completely authentic and excellent. It is like stepping directly into an authentic German Gasthaus. I read a review that criticized the authenticity of the decor but I consider that to be an uninformed opinion. As you may expect, each gasthaus owner will decorate his business to his liking and I have been in many that looked very much like this one. I also ate schnitzels in many small towns as our unit maneuvered across Germany and know that it is made many different ways according to the family traditions of the gasthaus owner. I consider Zur Kate's Jager Schnitzel to be a great one. I highly recommend this restaurant and believe you will find this an foreign adventure as well as a great meal. read more

After reading the glowing reviews I had to try this place. It quickly became obvious the people rating this place seem to be more interested in saving a buck than quality food . Nothing seemed fresh, the spaetzle tasted like Kraft macaroni and the gravy came out of a can. German cafeteria food is the best description. I'll bet the same people that rated this place four or five stars,think filibertos is great Mexican food too! read more

Food is fine if you don't mind reheated stuff. Pork Schnitzel was OK and the pepper sauce was quite tasty. Music like in Germany. Red cabbage Kraut was pretty decent as was the spetzle. read more

My wife and I go to Zur Kate whenever we want fun night out at a great price. Atmosphere is wonderful and the authentic German food is EXCELLENT! We have met some very nice, friendly people sitting at the "family style" tables. Service is always great, even when they are very busy. Worst food in the world my mother was German and this did not resemble any thing like her German potato salad this was pure vinegar the Sauerbraten was close 2nd for awful it is suppose to be sweet and sour not just vinegar.. I ask for a cheese hamburger and french-fries the woman said that they don't put anything on the burger well it was so bad that the dog wouldn't eat it... read more

Zur Kate is an excellent German Restaurant. We went on a Saturday when they opened at 4 PM. Within a few minutes all the booths in the restaurant were full. The wait staff hustled to make sure everyone had menus and drinks. A few minutes later we had our drinks and a basket of marble rye bread that was delicious. We placed our orders after asking a few questions about the menu of German specialties. Our food came a short time later delivered by the owner. Each table in the restaurant received their food quickly as well. The food was excellent. Two of us had the Jager schnitzel, one had the goulash and one had the schnitzel with onions. Each dinner came with a starch side (spetzel or German potato salad at our table) and your choice of sauerkraut or red cabbage. The sides were as good as the entrees. Zur Kate also has German beer on tap which was served in the appropriate glasses. Overall we had a fantastic experience and meal. read more

It's so hard to find good German food but this place does it right!! German owned and you can tell. The place is small but I enjoyed that. They handle the traffic (full on a Tuesday evening) well considering the space. You won't regret a visit. The food is worth any short wait you may experience. read more

Had a great meal here prior to a show at the Mesa Arts Center. We arrived at about 4:30pm and the place was really hopping! It was obvious that a fair share of the patrons were regulars because there were a lot of orders for the night's special, pork shank. I ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. My wife had Wiener Schnitzel with potato dumpling and sauerkraut, and we shared the ZK Hausmacher wurst. We both were extremely satisfied with our meal and would recommend it to any of our friends or family with a hankering for good German food. The portions were large, the food tasted great, the price certainly was affordable, the staff was very friendly and the ambiance was fun. When the music played, I could almost picture myself back in Germany...except for the palm trees outside. The only problem to speak of is that Zur Kate is 17 miles from our house! read more

My husband is first-generation German American. We LOVE this place. Schnitzels are perfect, wursts are like my husband's grandmom's - so is the red cabbage and spatzle! Authentic!! Service is first rate and very friendly. The waitress was more than accommodated my brother (who has special needs) by changing his menu options. We had read that this place closed and were devastated. SO happy that they are here to stay. read more

It's a different kind of spicy, not the kind that you have to down a gallon of milk for, more like a hot heatwave to your face!! It was actually kind of addicting, I kept trying it for the experience haha. The brats were good and the pancake was "on point". Not like moms, but next in line. The red cabbage was better than moms! I really wanted a slice of Black Forest cake, but I was stuffed and had a long drive. For sure coming back. The inside is very homey and calm.

It is definitely a "seasoned" vibe, having immediately taken over the space by a former western bar/beer hall that had been in existence for 50+ years. Their menu says "German and Hungarian" but all I read was German. They have a solid European beer selection, including taps and bottles and some cocktails with a German twist. The one that threw me for a loop (in the best way) was Kriek! So ofc I got a pint. We shared a (fairly large) pretzel to start, which comes with beer cheese. Tasty, but I was genuinely shocked there was no mustard. I ordered the jagerschnitzel (pork) and just overall the meal was as expected as if I was in the Midwest - amazing, delicious, insert chef's kiss. I wish I could have joined the clean plate club. The cucumber salad was flavorful and not too sour/pickley. My friend and I both noted how umami the savory sauce was- not too bacon, not too mushroom. The potatoes were not too salty or under-seasoned. Literally willing to drive up again if/when someone tells me to go. It wasn't horribly busy so it didn't take forever to order and get everything we needed. Our server was super nice and patient. She even gave a bar suggestion that ended up being a nice cherry for the top of the evening.

My friend got the smoked kielbasa dill pickle soup w/sour cream and I got the solyanka (beef, smoked kielbasa, veggies). We were intrigued by the dill in the first soup and that was mild but still tasty. The solyanka was delicious as well. For pierogis, we got the 12 plate to share three different kinds: farmer's cheese & chives, potato & cheese & jalapeño, and potato & bacon & onions. I think my favorite was the chives one followed by the bacon one. The jalapeño one was pretty mild. I wish that they had told us how the flavors were arranged on the plate. The honey cake was really delicious and the layers looked amazing. Even as full as I was, I ate the whole slice. The restaurant is attached to their little market. It's cozy inside and quite cute/quaint. I do agree that the service can be a bit slow in a way that was noticeable but didn't leave me feeling neglected. I would definitely return to try more of the menu.

They also have a large variety of appetizers and other tasty dishes meals. These dishes are made from scratch and much of the cuisine is European inspired. We could have easily have spent many more hours there but there was more of Scottsdale to see Some tips: We went in the spring and it was absolutely gorgeous outside. It's now summer hours and it looks like they're adjusting their schedule accordingly. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The rest of the days they're open 12-9pm (they open an hour earlier Saturday and Sunday, and they close an hour early on Sunday) Our server was incredible gracious, attentive, and professional. She gave us recommendations for the area and also food/drink to try You can make reservations, but we just did a walk-in. I think this more applies to larger groups as they're able to accommodate that. They also accommodate private parties (see their website) There appears to be a trivia night every Wednesday at 7pm. There's Girls Night Out Friday specials from 3pm-close. Join the Stein Club (rewards program). Ask your server how to join Explore Old Town Scottsdale either before or after. Of course, had to wait for the hype to die down before checking it out. Once there, the server explained the process - basically you just place all your orders through the iPad that's on the table. Very convenient to scroll through the different categories and everything has pics to help you decide what to order. Once you have your selections in your cart, you just send your order to the kitchen. You can do this for multiple rounds, basically just small to medium sized orders until you feel like you're at a good stopping point. The first thing to select is the broths. You can choose 2 broths or 4 broths. For our group size, the server recommended 2 broths so everything can heat up and cook quickly. We got the tom yum soup and the three delicacies soup base (seafood, mushrooms, jujubes). We also got an assortment of meats, veggies, etc. The tom yum soup was by far our favorite. The other one was too bland. Honestly I didn't know what all meats we ordered, just that they were delicious. Some other highlights were: pork dumplings, potato noodles, etc. We also got the signature dancing noodle, which I thought was purely for show, but the noodle itself was really great - super chewy. Haidilao is great for groups, especially so you can try a little bit of everything. It's not exactly cheap, but it's for the experience and meats are naturally on the more expensive end. Our total per person ended up being around $50. If your group orders more high end option, it could easily skew closer to $75. Had a great time here, would come back!!

The restaurant definitely leans heavily into the entertainment side of dining. The dancing noodle performance is genuinely fun, especially if you have kids, and the service is attentive. That said, I'm super disappointeed. The biggest issue is the value. By the time you order your broth, proteins, vegetables, noodles, and extras, you're spending the same amount you could spend at a James Beard award-winning restaurant, yet the quality of the food isn't even anywhere near equal. What Haidilao is really selling is the experience, not the flavor. As an Asian woman who regularly makes hot pot at home with family, I came in excited and left sooooo underwhelmed. The ingredients were fine, but nothing stood out as exceptional. The broths lacked the depth and richness I was hoping for, and overall the meal felt more focused on presentation and service than creating memorable flavors. And even then, the service wasn't great. I frequently had to flag down the waitress for a refill or help. If you're looking for a first hot pot experience, celebrating with kids, or want the novelty of the noodle show, you may enjoy it. But if you're already familiar with hot pot and are coming primarily for the food, you may find it hard to justify the price. For us, the experience was memorable (and only because it was our first time trying this place). The meal itself definitely wasn't.

As someone married to a Bavarian, finding authentic German food in Phoenix has always been a challenge. Over the years, most German restaurants have disappeared, but Zur Kate in Mesa has remained one of our family's favorites. The Bavarian owners serve up generous plates that taste just like "back home." From perfectly crispy Schnitzel to tender Sauerbraten with Potato Dumplings and Rote Kohl, everything is smothered in traditional sauces that make each dish feel authentic and satisfying. On certain nights, you may even catch an accordion player, which instantly transports my wife back to her roots. Even our daughter, who has never been to Germany, lights up at the music and devours the food like she's grown up with it. For me, the liter-sized Pilsners (Maß beers) are a highlight, and no visit is complete without finishing with a warm, flaky Apfelstrudel. Zur Kate is not just a restaurant, it is a little slice of Bavaria in the desert, and one of the rare spots that makes us feel right at home. read more

The ambiance and decor are exactly what you'd hope for - all the charming fixtures and trinkets that create that classic German feel. And yes, our server was even sporting lederhosen, which only added to the overall charm! Trust me, it's got a unique and welcoming vibe. Our server was absolutely jolly, engaging in friendly small talk and providing perfectly fine service throughout our meal. I was really pleased with my bratwursts; they genuinely tasted homemade, which is always a great sign. The mustard served alongside was fantastic, and the sauerkraut was equally impressive, clearly homemade as well. The Owner is from Germany and is very friendly, chatting and drinking with guests if things slow down enough near closing.
