Went here last month because my son love to see the Holiday lights on Fourth street. We're a vaccinated family but we still love to enjoy outdoor seating and we were happy they offered patio and street seating. We sat street-side next to outdoor heaters that kept us very cozy! The service was fast and friendly. They allow their outdoor servers to wear dressy/casual clothes with blazers to keep warm but still look very nice! The food was really good! We have their warm cabbage salad, brussel sprouts, fish and chips, pork chop and steak dinner. All were cooked to perfection and tasted really good. The mashed potatoes was a little too whipped for my liking, but my son recently had braces so they were perfect for him. We'll definitely return here! read more

Excellent service! Great food! Had our 2nd gathering of dear friends. Our waiter was attentive and conscientious. Food was so tasty. We splurged with apps, main courses, dessert and drinks! The atmosphere of Zut is wonderful, however the service has taken a turn over the last few years and the food is overpriced. This restaurant was incredible a few years ago with welcoming service and good food but the last few times i've gone, I wouldn't recommend based on service alone. There are definitely some nice waiters but most look annoyed if you even ask for water. The happy hour is okay but there are better places in Berkeley if you want a drink. read more

For customer service. We were shopping in the area and walking looking for a place to lunch today. The person greeting us asked if we had reservations. We did not there was a couple ahead of us seated directly inside. Told us she only had the bar or table top tables. We would have to wait 30 minutes. My friend is handicapped and can't sit in either of those chairs. What was upsetting is there were lots of seats inside and out. We asked about a certain table she said oh those are all reserved. Terrible service for mediocre food. Waitress forget an entree and had to be reminded to bring it out (30minutes later) then she forgot drinks (basically 30 minute interval). My boyfriend and I decided to eat here for nye and luckily we were able to get a table without reservations because the server said that it would be packed tonight. They had their regular menu and their nye menu. The person who sat us down said that the two popular items tonight was the roasted rack of lamb and the dunce was crab potato gnocchi. The service here was good even though they were pretty packed. We were seated quickly, and they took our order quickly too. Grapefruit soda:: My boyfriend liked his drink. I on the other hand thought it was a little too sour or bitter for me; however this is personal preference. Basil ginger lemon kombucha spritzer:: Kombucha taste was strong, but had a good balance with the ginger. The spritzer adds a nice addition to the combo. The mint also makes the drink taste perfect. Caesar salad:: Light but tasteful dressing, had a good equal balance of salad and the dressing, big lettuce pieces so you have to cut it apart, croutons were delicious. I wish the salad had some pepper on it. Winter truffle fettuccine:: You can definitely see the truffle loaded on this dish! Pasta tasted like it was made fresh. Overall the seasoning on this dish and all the ingredients balanced out to make it delicious. Dungeness crab potato gnocchi:: Presentation was beautiful! Little bits of crab makes the dish look really good. The gnocchi had a light, soft and delicate taste and the crab was cooked perfectly. Zut is a restaurant/bar at which you want to have plenty of time to relax and hang out! It is as chill as the City of Berkeley. But unlike Berkeley, it has the sophistication, class and hipster factors...all in a really good way. Located on the vibrant, popular and people-watching corridor, Fourth Street, it is one of the many restaurants nestled between boutique and main stream shops, performing musicians, and artsy coffee establishments. Unlike the "hurried" feel of so many bay area places, Fourth Street is a mecca for those who want to stroll, nosh and have fun on a lazy day. Zut totally lends itself to enjoying every aspect of the Fourth Street stroll! Two outdoor patios for the up close and personal goings on of the Street. Plenty of big glass windows all through out the restaurant/bar. So it doesn't matter where you are sitting, a grand view awaits. Trying to escape the hellish, hot weather of Davis, Zut never looked so welcoming! Arriving near 3 p.m., the outdoor patios were filled! Nary a seat. But inside near the bar a couple of high top tables for two or three were open. Each table had a pull apart, wide open window allowing in the cool breeze and a perfect view of the patio and street. It was heaven. The Bar is a large open area with plenty of seating. There are also two other separate areas for larger groups or even intimate tables for two. So many seating options! Especially love the high ceilings and grand chandilers! Magical at dark! A podium of sorts is the first thing a patron encounters as he/she enters. Today we were greeted by Jerahn (J-air-in), who as it were turns out to be the General Manager. So welcoming and easy going. "Sit where ever you want"...he says! So to the high tops we went! The Afternoon Menu, 2:30 to 5 p.m. was just the ticket. A great selection of items (menu photo attached). And an equally wonderful Cocktail, Beer on Tap and Wine listing too ! (Zut does not offer a HH.) Today was going to be a sparkling glass of wine with which to begin and I was happy to see N/V Brut Rose, cremant d'alsace, france available by the glass. Finally I can breath...LOL! Enjoyed that glass for at least 30 minutes while quietly taking in the people watching. As the hunger pangs developed, GF and I checked out the limited but varied menu. Settled on the Bianca pizza with castelvetrano olives, fior di latte, blistered cherry tomatoes, garlic, grand padano and basil! It was fabulous!!! I am craving it now:). Extremely reasonable price...$20 for an exotic, good size pizza! So thinking a glass of red is in order with this beautiful pizza, I walked up to the Bar...just steps away to ask for some tasting notes and such. Brianna, beautiful and knowledgeable about everything wine, didn't waste a moment. She inquired as to the pizza type and then brought out three glasses and two bottles of wine. The third glass she filled with Pinot Grigio, giocato, slovenia...wine on tap! How sweet was that. Did not expect! Another reason I love this place!!! She was so much fun. I could have hung out with her for hours! Alas, this was her last day:(. She and her BF were off to tour the world. Sigh! Take me with you, please! So if you are still with me here:)...you may see why I love Zut! All my visits have included different types of food and alcohol. Food fabulous. Service slow and not engaged. A slow Friday night. Half a dozen patrons are in the main dining room. Seated. No drink order. Water service was fine. The server came to take our orders and we asked for our drinks with the entrees. We had to ask if starters were possible. The rest of event was fine. Still, the attention lacked was surprising. Tried ZT again today, with the same lack luster service. With the exception of the welcoming hostess, my experience as a one at the bar was fairly bland. We are just here cause one of our motorbike is in the shop to get a new tire and we had to kill some time. So we went for my glass of ice tea and a glass of wine. When we looked at the "afternoon" menu this interesting item just said "you have to try me": coal roasted grapes. Really? Somebody left grapes on a hot grill and burned them and they made it to a menu item. What a great chef lol. No really it is an interesting item. So you get these smoked n burned fresh grapes, on a bed of home made ricotta (tasty!) and some slinkier of an aged balsamic vinegar and some mint leaves. It s a dish you will hate or love it. Or - as it is in my case - find it interesting. The used grapes are in the natural state really delicious, and when I tried the ones on top that have a little smoke this is a really good afternoon nibble or even a snack for the night. But most of them that had directly contact to the coals and are really smoky that's not to my taste. So overall I would suggest everyone's has to try it (if you like grapes) and make up your own opinion. The wine and the ice tea was good. So since we did not tried more this time, and I like the concept of an afternoon menu and they are so creative to come up with new items I think there is no way for today that they don't deserve five stars. read more

Go for the smoke! The wood fired oven imparts a smoky taste to the dishes. The steak was laced with this wooden smokey taste. The crostini as well; and the buratta and olives were high quality. One time we had burgers and the burgers (Impossible burger in my case, g/f got beef) had the smoke and a great crusty exterior. I am not a big drinker but I drink Zut Palmers when I am there. I popped in for lunch on a Sunday and got a table outside immediately. They were much friendlier than the Japanese place next door which I had originally planned on going to. I went with the Sea Bass Fish & Chips. I had never seen Sea Bass used in Fish & Chips before and couldn't resist. It was so good! Not overly breaded and perfectly crisp. The garlic fries were also crispy and well cooked. It was pricey, but I knew I was getting a high quality fish so I was okay with it.
